BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I am the CEO & Creative Director of a branding agency located in Gdansk but operating in all major cities of Poland.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Devopsbay?

We hired Devopsbay to develop a tool which is helping us aggregate and monitor all marketing-related data in real-time.

What were your goals for this project?

Our main objective was to increase efficiency of our efforts. The thing which triggered us into starting this project was the situation in which we were wasting tons of time for "jumping" from one tool to another in order to gather insight which is essential in making the best possible decisions for our clients.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

Devopsbay felt our vibe from the very beginning and simply understood my needs within seconds. Their ability to connect the dots impressed me and my business partner. We were confident they were the right fit for our company and they prove again and again that we were right.

Describe the project in detail.

Marketing Data Aggregation System is simply a tool for evaluating and comparing analysis options. It's a tool capable of generating aggregate-level time series data related to marketing measurement (e.g., channel-level marketing spend, website visits, competitor's spending, pricing, sales volume, etc.).

It is used to model a wide variety of marketing situations that include different mixes of advertising spending, levels of ad effectiveness, types of ad targeting, sales seasonality, competitor's activity, and much more.

Key features are marketing performance metrics, including return on ad spending and final return on ad spend. System was built on Kubernetes using microservices written in Python and Go.

What was the team composition?

We worked directly with a Team Leader who was not only managing the project but also writing the code himself. Apart from the coding and PM part he conducted workshops in order to collect full information about our actual needs. The cooperation was smooth and if there was any trouble then we had full access to the founder. Who was responsive and helpful.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We managed to optimize the flow of information in our organization. Which led to better and quicker decision-making.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Thanks to how well they communicate we understood our needs better. Our initial expectations were a little different than the final ones and it's thanks to their input that we could make a well-informed decision to customize the soft better to our KPIs.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The speed and clarity of communication impressed us. All the teammates involved in the process were to the point and sincere at the same time. Company's culture is one of their strengths, no doubt about that.

Are there any areas for improvement?

You can always get a better price but it would be hard to get a better quality than these guys provide

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m an executive for a Cloud computing company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Devopsbay?

We needed some custom platform development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We provided specifications. They were heavily integrated into our engineering organization; involved in product planning and software development.
We collaboratively designed a sprint and they worked with our engineers to build the software. It went through QA, and then was shipped to production.
Kubernetes was the world of the software. They used Python and Node.js, as well as SQL for database. They did a lot of networking, using libraries such as RabbitMQ.

What is the team composition?

We have a main point of contact, but there are about six people working on the team.

How did you come to work with Devopsbay?

We reached out to them. They were working on a similar product, and we connected to see about working together. They have a lot of expertise in Kubernetes.

How much have you invested with them?

We roughly spent $2 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in October 2018, and it’s ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They produce quality code and collaborate well with our internal team. Measuring them purely on their speed and productivity as an engineering team, they have been successful.

How did Devopsbay perform from a project management standpoint?

We use several tools, including Jira and Quip. They are communicative if they’re behind schedule, and they’re generally good at coming through when we need them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Kubernetes is a new, rapidly evolving space. It has been beneficial working with a team that understands it in detail and has worked with it in production. They possess a lot of expertise.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Set up tools in a way to minimize the friction of working remotely.

I used to be CEO of an enterprise machine learning platform.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Devopsbay?

We needed a partner to help build our software.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Devopsbay developed most of our software orchestration using Kubernetes, cloud deployment and automation. The platform's hosted on-premise and on AWS. Their team deployed the software for a few customers. They also built the frontend and backend of our end-user application. Their team used a huge stack of technologies including Kubernetes, AWS, Python, and GO.

What is the team composition?

We worked with around 12 people. We had our product manager direct the project, so their team consisted of engineers mostly.

How did you come to work with Devopsbay?

I found them online. I interviewed between 20–30 different freelancers or companies. We looked for technical experience and cost but not location. The cost of Devopsbay’s services was good.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $1,000,000 with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the collaboration in January 2017 and finished working together at the end of 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The quality of their work was good. They built the software and delivered it to a few customers before other tech companies did. The product has worked relatively well. It was a leading software in the industry.

How did Devopsbay perform from a project management standpoint?

We used Jira and Github.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were good with Kubernetes and DevOps. Devopsbay was a strong team.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Communication and raising risks could be improved. Their team likes to do everything perfectly. Engineers tend to do that naturally. Sometimes for management, it’s better to know the risks.
