Platform Design and Development for Tech Startup
"Inkoniq thinks outside the box and isn’t afraid to push back on our bad design ideas."
the reviewer
the review
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
Precept Labs is a startup based in Bangalore mainly focused on consumer internet products. I’m a co-founder of the company.
What challenge were you trying to address with Inkoniq?
As a tech company, most of our employees come from a technology background. When we started building a platform to manage housework transactions, the first challenge was having a really good design. However, we lacked the expertise in-house.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We brought Inkoniq on board for UI/UX help. We have a mobile platform that’s a kind of private marketplace where we bring in local vendors and households. We wanted to make sure that all its functionalities could be performed in a couple of clicks. The users are not necessarily that tech-savvy, so the challenge was designing the app in such a way that a first-timer user could navigate it without guidance or tutorials. Inkoniq provided design for both the Android and the iOS version.
From the beginning of the design process, we wanted the app to be easy to understand even for users with no English-speaking skills. That required localized content and communication for our target market, India. We wanted to make sure that we could easily deploy localized versions of the platform without needing many changes.
We gave this brief to Inkoniq, and they undertook a process to tackle these problems that impressed us. The team first conducted user interviews. They spoke with actual users in order to understand how to go about it from their perspective—what kinds of problems they were facing and what solutions they were expecting. I was impressed by the kinds of questions they asked and the preparation they did for the user interviews.
What is the team composition?
We initially had a project manager as the main point of contact. They then assigned three UX designers, including one senior person. There were 3–4 people in the team altogether.
How did you come to work with Inkoniq?
We chose them based on their track record and previous work. I started interacting with their team and actually called them to our office for a face-to-face meeting. I was very impressed with their description of the things they were going to do and decided to bring them on board.
I met and interviewed 6–7 design studios, looking at the work they’d completed, the backgrounds or profiles of their teams, and their cost. Across all of these, it made sense to go with Inkoniq.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with Inkoniq around April 2019, and it’s ongoing. We’re planning to give them more work on the app’s design.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We came up with a set of requirements, and Inkoniq brought solutions we hadn’t even thought of. That was very productive and helpful from our perspective—they went beyond the brief to contribute to the success of the product.
We’ve shown the product to people, and they were very interested in it. The first thing they say is that the design is very good. That’s the first impression we want to have, and I’m glad that Inkoniq was able to deliver on it.
How did Inkoniq perform from a project management standpoint?
They are very professional and update us on a biweekly basis. Whenever they finish something, they share wireframes or anything they come up with right away so that we can give immediate feedback. Having that continuous feedback loop is very impressive.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Inkoniq thinks outside the box and isn’t afraid to push back on our bad design ideas. Not only that, they come back with better solutions, which we agree to.
Design is an iterative process. With some of the other experiences I’ve had, there were one or two iterations and then we were done. Any further changes would cost us. Inkoniq is actually very flexible in incorporating our feedback if it would help make the product better, even if it was beyond their scope. They go to the next level, and we’re very impressed with that.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I’ve been happy so far. They’ve been great.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
I recommend trying Inkoniq out. We took a chance with them, even though they’re not a big name in Bangalore, and, boy, was it worth it. They’re more than worth the money.
