Full Stack Developer

My name is Conor Leary and I'm a Full Stack Web and Mobile developer based in Boston, MA. Prior to freelancing, I spent a number of years as an in-house developer. Most noteworthy working at DraftKings designing and developing REST micro-services for handling real-time traffic for millions of concurrent users. I've worked as a senior contributor at a number of enterprise companies, lead projects, assisted with hiring, and filled in as the de facto CTO at a number of smaller startups.

In my free time, I work on various projects involving blockchain and voice applications. I graduated from the ConsenSys developer academy in 2018 and currently operate my own Tezo’s baker node. In 2017-18, I was accepted into the Amazon Alexa Developer Rewards program and averaged over 75k MAU’s on my various Alexa Skills.

I’m available for one-off projects or to come in and work alongside an existing team. For larger projects, I have a team of additional contractors and graphic designers.

The project is on pause, but the client is more than impressed with Conor Leary Development’s thorough designs. The team helped flesh out the client’s business case and define best practices in mobile app development. Timeliness, reliability, and clear communication add to this smooth workflow.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a VP at Sports Info Solutions. We’re a data analytics provider for sports teams and other B2B customers in the sports industry.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Conor Leary Development?

This project was our first mobile app development project and the first time we were getting to the B2C space.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’re through the design phase of creating the mobile app. Conor (Freelance Developer) oversaw the technical design. We put him in charge of finding a graphic designer because we were having trouble finding one. He tracked someone down who had the exact skill set we were looking for. Between the two of them, they put together a robust plan for the app within four weeks.

What is the team composition?

I just worked with Conor.

How did you come to work with Conor Leary Development?

I was on a Buffalo Bills podcast for some draft analysis that Conor listens to. He reached out to me to offer his services as a developer. We were two days into our search for a developer to help us through the design phase, so it was serendipitous. He then blew us away in his presentation.

However, Conor was concerned at first that our scope wasn’t clear enough. He was very clear about what his skill set included and didn’t include. he wanted us to give him a better idea of what he needed and that he had some confirmation that he could get graphic design help. We came back to him with a narrower RFP that he could commit to. It was clear he was the best equipped to handle our project.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $21,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in May 2020. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has disrupted the sports calendar and our business, so we paused the development of the final product in June. But we still feel great about the design and business case, and Conor is our preferred developer once we get the go-ahead.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Conor has well-rounded expertise that lets him play a key role in our technical design, business case, and best practices for this project. The aspect he brought to the table that was most valuable to us is his understanding of how to teach us the newer aspects of what we’re doing.

How did Conor Leary Development perform from a project management standpoint?

He’s easy to work with. I like to let people know on day one what I’m looking for and how to communicate with me on how to get there. Conor fit into that right away. We laid out on the first day what we needed at the end of four weeks. He was able to deliver it to me, asking questions along the way and staying engaged without being overbearing on my time. He got everything done we asked of him and exceeded our expectations.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We asked Conor to lead us in a short time through how to put together our mobile app. He personally delivered a through tech design document that includes all the necessary parameters to begin development as soon as we get the green light. Without Conor’s work, our business case would not be what it is today, and the moving parts would be unaccounted or.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I’ve been very pleased with Conor.

Any advice for potential customers?

Be open and honest about what you need from Conor, and then let him do the work. He doesn’t need to be micromanaged. His expertise goes beyond his programming skills.

The service and deliverables provided by Conor Leary Development exceeded project requirements and thoroughly pleased the client company, following through on everything promised at the beginning of the project. Their team was organized and professional throughout all of their work.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a technical project manager at a company called Nutrafol. We’re a health and wellness e-commerce company that sells subscription-based products to our customers.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Conor Leary Development?

We don’t have any in-house developers, so we utilized their team to build out a web application for us.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Our in-house design team designed the app with Conor’s help, including basic guidelines and a tentative page layout. From there, they built the app from the ground up. They leveraged SQL and its suite of technologies for the backend of the app and made use of Flutter for the frontend.

What is the team composition?

I worked with Conor (Co-Founder) and Dylan (Co-Founder) on the project.

How did you come to work with Conor Leary Development?

I believe we first came across them online, and they had glowing reviews, so we decided to reach out. We liked what they had to say when we spoke to them, so we moved forward from there.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $50,000–$100,000 in total.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project ran from about to January–March 2020.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We kept track of how much work was being completed in any given stage of the project using a ticketing system in JIRA. They went above and beyond what they needed to do to complete the milestones that we gave them and were always just great partners to work with.

How did Conor Leary Development perform from a project management standpoint?

Everything was completed in a timely fashion and delivered exactly when we needed it. Their competence made the project incredibly easy to manage from my end. I would touch base with their team 1–2 times a week to go over the progress that we had made and what things he needed to move forward with the next steps of the project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The work itself was definitely the highlight of the project. When we came to them with the designs, we thought it was going to be much more significant than it really turned out to be.

Most of the time with third-party companies you really don’t know what you’re getting until you actually start, but they delivered everything that they promised from the beginning.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There isn’t really anything that comes to mind that they could do differently, to be honest.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you’re looking to build a web app, they are absolutely the company for you.

The client submitted this review online.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

Founder and CEO of WeatherOptics, we uniquely combine advanced weather models with granular, non-weather data, and machine learning to create business impact indices down to the local level. Our impact indices provide weather insight to several industries including finance, transportation, utilities and emergency management.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Conor Leary Development?

We needed a developer to take the impact indices we created and scale them down to a highly granular level that covered the entire United States. We needed this done in a short period of time so we could visually display these ratings and have clients access them through an interactive web portal. Conor was a key player in creating the granular ratings and helping us use them in our portal.

What were your goals for this project?

The main goal for this project was to have ratings that covered zip codes as well as a 3km grid throughout the United States. This was needed in order to display our ratings visually in our interactive web portal. We needed a very strong developer who could not only accomplish this but could also do so in under 2 months.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

When searching for a strong developer/data engineer we interviewed 6 candidates using sites like Upwork and Indeed. Conor stood out in the interview as someone who would be a very quick learner and could understand our code, the structure we already had in place, and the need to move fast. The other developers we were interviewing did not come close to Conors capability and astounding skills in communication and teamwork.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

Conor built a granular impact index rating system that allowed us to use multiple numerical weather forecasting models to directly predict how different types of weather would lead to real on the ground impacts. This was the initial project we gave to Conor, but once he completed it in a timely manner, he moved on to help out with multiple data engineering projects that other team members were working on.

He helped with brainstorming how to complete new projects, improving team efficiency when testing code and data, and most importantly how to continue advancing our startup to operate more like an established business.

What was the team composition?

Our team was composed of between 8 and 12 individuals that ranged from data scientists to meteorologists to UI/UX developers. Numbers would fluctuate depending on the projects we needed to complete. Conor joined a small team of about 4 developers/engineers.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We would not have been able to build and deploy our interactive web portal without the speedy and diligent help of Conor. The web portal allows us to give corporations a visual representation of our weather data so that they can make appropriate decisions when it comes to weather impact.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Even now Conor remains at the top of people we've hired over the last 18 months. The most important thing for our team is the ability to communicate projects effectively to the rest of the team that has a wide range of skillsets, along with being able to think critically, creatively and get work done on time. Conor was able to accomplish all of those things.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Beyond the actual data engineering and development skills that Conor has, what struck me as highly impressive was his eagerness to grow and advance our company. Many vendors would work to complete the minimum that was required of them, but they always went the extra mile.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There is very little Conor could improve.

CryptoTrader.Tax is the leading tax reporting software for cryptocurrency investors and traders. The platform is used by tens of thousands of cryptocurrency users to accurately and easily report their taxes. I am the Co-Founder and CEO.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Conor Leary Development?

We hired Conor to work alongside of our development team to help bring specific features to market.

What were your goals for this project?

The goal of this project was to implement the infrastructure necessary for allowing our web application to scale seamlessly to thousands of concurrent users. In addition, Conor worked on a project to upgrade our billing system to a completely new model.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We selected Conor through interacting with him on Angel list and having a "test" period where we could assess his skills and readiness to contribute to our fast-paced development team.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

Conor provided full web development services and was in charge of designing and implementing a full application monitoring system. Based on his system, he was then in charge of identifying scalability flaws in the applications architecture and address them with the team.

What was the team composition?

Our development team consists of four other software engineers. In addition the team has three other people in marketing and customer support.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Based on Conor's work in developing and deploying a full application monitoring system for CryptoTrader.Tax, our team was able to address and fix a number of scalability issues within the architecture of the application. This has a significant impact on our business as during the busy tax season, scalability and being able to seamlessly support concurrent sessions is of great importance.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Conor was given full control over this project. He reported directly to our technical lead on his design and implementation of the project. He was also tasked on reporting his finding and suggestions directly to our CTO. Conor is extremely bright and was a great person to work with.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Not only does Conor have fantastic technical knowledge and experience, but he also has the more underrated skills of being able to succinctly convey his ideas in a customer-facing way. Conor has the ability to get on the phone with any customer or potential partner and speak to his work or vision of the company. This is a tremendously valuable skill that isn't always present with engineers.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Conor went above and beyond on all projects that he worked with our team on. He was a great asset to our team.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm the co-founder of Willow the Senior Placement Platform. I run both product development and product marketing.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Conor Leary Development?

We hired Conor to re-factor our data model to improve the usability of our services.

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted our database re-done quickly to make the product easier to use and to get to market faster.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

I went to high school with Conor so he popped up on my Linkedin network. However, I did not know if he had the credentials to complete the project so I had a few of Willow's technical advisors vet his background to make sure that he was the appropriate contractor for the planned work.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

So we have a senior living platform that connects families to local Assisted Living options. We ran into an issue where our intake form was too technical for the average person and we had to make some changes so that it was easier to use. To do this, we had to change the structure of our data model which presented some challenges. First, we had to change the intake form information, we also had to create new user roles and permissions for these new formats.

What was the team composition?

The team consisted of four people. I hired and found three developers to work on this project: a back-end dev, a full-stack dev, and someone to QA the work.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

It's too early to tell what the business impact is of this project but we were very pleased by the work that Conor completed.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Conor effectively managed his work and the work of the full-stack developer on this project. It was very effective as Conor completed his work quickly and he completely explained the work that he had completed to our full stack developer so that he was able to get started.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I was most impressed by the speed of Conor's development. He got his part of the project done in less than 7 days. That was a huge benefit because other developers were waiting on him to complete his work so that they could complete their portion of the work.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Nothing comes to mind. He was clear and communicative. He got his work done faster than I expected. We had a great experience.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the founder of, and a software engineer for, an agriculture technology company that helps farmers improve the health of their soil.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Conor Leary Development?

Conor (Founder, Conor Leary Development) built our app. We had developed an algorithm from an agronomist’s perspective. We were giving it out from a spreadsheet in which we did calculations. He translated this to a user-facing application and did some e-commerce work for us as well.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I walked Conor through the algorithm, and then we talked about the architecture behind the app, like what database fields were needed and how the app was able to grow going forward. We made decisions off of the future-leaning possibilities for our business, and then I sent Conor in to build the app.

The app is a web application, built with Python. We had a good deal of back-and-forth, I provided the ideas, and he made them a technological reality.

What is the team composition?

Conor did everything. After he finished, I did some additional web development on the product myself.

How did you come to work with Conor Leary Development?

I received a referral from a friend. I got in touch with him and ultimately moved forward because he seemed to have a good command of technology and was easy to communicate with.

How much have you invested with them?

I invested around $40,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked on this from May–July 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The app has never gone down, and the servers have always stayed up. The site hasn’t broken, and we haven’t had any complaints. We’ve sold a good deal of products already despite only having a soft launch so far.

How did Conor Leary Developmentperform from a project management standpoint?

I was very happy with his communication. He was always quick to respond and met all deadlines. Working with Conor was a pleasant and seamless experience.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I really appreciated the fact that he took the time to explain things to me and teach me the technology. He always explained why he was implementing everything in a certain way. I felt like he was a part of my team who cared about us and our product.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can think of nothing.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Utilize the weekly calls early in the process, there’s a lot of value in them.
