• Communication Clarity: While Codyua's communication was generally good, there were instances where clearer and more detailed updates on the progress of specific tasks would have been beneficial. • Timeline Estimations: Although Codyua was effective in delivering items on time, there were occasions where more accurate timeline estimations for certain deliverables could have helped in better planning and resource allocation on our end.

I was the former director of product management for an AR SaaS startup. 

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Cody?
We hired Cody to provide us with AR development services. Our team had a couple of in-house engineers and wanted to complete a couple of small projects with Cody. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?
Cody helped us build the integration between our platform and the Adobe Creative Suite in time for the Adobe Max conference. They initially did a technical de-composition of our product and what it would take to implement the integration. They also worked on creating designs to build out what the integration would look like inside our product and the Adobe project.
From there, we moved forward with the implementation phase. We had standup meetings 2–3 days per week to check in on them and understand where they were in the process. During this time, their engineers partnered with our engineers to work on the project and worked on everything from front- and backend development to architecture.
For technologies, Cody primarily used Three.js alongside computer vision algorithms. Some were open-source technologies; we also used Google’s computer vision algorithms toward the end to build our own renderer. The key deliverable was a web app that could build AR experiences across Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.
What is the team composition?
We originally brought in two engineers from Cody, but we ultimately expanded to 14–15 teammates toward the end of the project. Our in-house head of design guided and managed the two designers from Cody. Apart from them, our technical project manager managed the engineering timeline and scope.
How did you come to work with Cody?
We found Cody through a referral. Our CPO at the time worked with a number of engineers in Ukraine, and that was where he met the teammates from Cody.
How much have you invested with them?
Our budget was around $20,000–$30,000 per week.
What is the status of this engagement?
The engagement started in February 2019, and I left the company in February 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The integration was super successful. Our team launched and demonstrated it at Adobe; their CPO was a personal investor in our company, so he was excited to see the integration come together. Our customer growth was at 106%, while the monthly active users grew by 124% over a year — the number of customers we acquired because of the solution we built more than doubled.
Overall, Cody exceeded my expectations. I worked with a number of outsourced development teams before, and Cody was by far the best team among them.
How did Cody perform from a project management standpoint?
We enjoyed working with the Cody team so much. The engineers were so impressive that we ended up laying off our entire in-house engineering team and expanding our engagement with Cody. We treated them as part of our team, and they worked for us for 40 hours per week. We had standups at least three days per week and were constantly on calls with them in the morning and at night.
One of the first two engineers who worked with us was by far the rock star of the team. He was one of the biggest reasons we chose to expand our work with Cody. He could do the frontend, backend, iOS, computer vision, and AR development tasks that we needed.
Overall, they handled all the technical architecture and ideas for the project instead of just waiting for us to assign them tasks. It was a true partnership. For tools, we mainly used Google Meet, Slack, and Zoom. We also used Jira and Notion for documentation. 
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their engineering quality was extremely high. Moreover, I always looked for trust and communication when it came to working with outsourced engineering teams. Cody had the ability to communicate what they were building — if they said they’d finish something at a particular time, I could trust them to do so.
For comparison, I always had to provide super detailed specifications to the previous engineering teams I engaged. It was one of the biggest struggles I had with those teams. If anything were wrong with my specifications, the engineers would make the wrong assumptions. Meanwhile, Cody was incredibly efficient at taking relatively high-level requirements and thinking through the problems themselves. 
In other words, Cody had the ability to partner with me and not just take detailed instructions for what to build. This was one of their biggest strengths.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Cody didn’t do a great job of selling their own services. I’d been in a couple of their sales calls, and they didn’t do themselves justice. Sometimes they lost deals or business because they couldn’t tell their story as well as they could. They missed opportunities because they hadn’t optimized their sales process or pitch.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Follow the process, and realize that when working with Cody, you’re not just handing over projects — you have to truly collaborate with them. Listen to the ideas they have. They have a great ability to think critically through problems, so treat your engagement with Cody as a collaboration.
