We contracted the Chomp team to create a marketing video using preexisting assets to boost our client's marketing efforts. To round out the project, we needed video editing, additional graphics, and key branding slides. The Chomp team was responsive and delivered a key asset for our client to use across various media channels. Their team is also incredibly talented and works feverishly to meet deadlines, all while delivering a high-quality product.

Our software and the industry our customers are in is fairly complex. We needed a way to quickly show prospects that we understand the issues that they face, and that we've built a great solution for them that will make their jobs a lot easier. 
We felt a 1-minute video would be a great way to accomplish this. It was pretty open ended at the beginning, but the team at Chomp showed us some good examples of their prior work and helped us nail down what we wanted.

Chomp Creative Studios has incredible project management skills. Their level of communication and the tools they use to support the project make it extremely easy and enjoyable to work with them. All deliverables and project milestones were not only delivered on time but they were usually completed early. 

When our product launch timeline got pushed back, they were super receptive to our needs and didn't bat an eyelash when we needed to pause efforts on this project. As soon as we were ready to pick back up, they were clear, organized, and quick to respond with how we should proceed to finish the project given that some of the script and illustrations needed to change.

ScyllaDB is the company that develops the monstrously fast and scalable NoSQL database of the same name. I am the Director of Technical Advocacy there, and am responsible for "spreading the word" about our company and our technology.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Chomp Creative Studio, and what were your goals?

ScyllaDB wants to move to a "video-first" strategy, where we explain ourselves with video, animation/motion graphics, and other multimedia to create a more vibrant connection to our community, prospects, users and customers. The first part of this was to put out a 1-minute explainer video about what ScyllaDB is and does.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I found the Clutch.co list of 1,400+ video production companies, and cited that in a spreadsheet I assembled of video companies I was considering. We wanted to select US west coast companies for the most part to ensure the working hours of the company matched our own work times.

We short-listed 8 companies, but I only contacted five directly and got callbacks within the required time by four. Chomp was neither the most nor least expensive, but fell within our price range. The conversation with Al did the most to assure us that the Chomp team would be able to create the results we wanted. The quality of the samples we saw were better than some of the comparably-priced other companies.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail, including the project steps and all stages of production.

The video is an introduction to ScyllaDB. I already had written the script for the video prior to approaching Chomp. Once initial payment was made, progress was made steadily from visual overview and voiceover, to storyboards to illustration to full animation and SFX.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

Al Reyes. He was patient with us, even when I'd "submarine" because I was busy on other projects. I had a lot of balls in the air this year. Through it all Al kept the project on track, doing semi-weekly (twice a week) updates. All communications were done through Basecamp, with email reminders sent upon all status updates. We used Google docs for the script and visual description, boords.com for the storyboarding, and frame.io for voiceover and video review.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

I am happy with the result. We just put it up on YouTube yesterday, and I just tweeted it out for the first time today, so we need to wait for actual metrics to kick in. One of the first main uses we will make of this video is at P99 CONF [p99conf.io], where we will have somewhere around 10,000 registrants see this video debuted in our corporate lounge as part of the video roll.

It is solid journeyman work. Very serviceable and definitely matches our needs and expectations (and budget!). Chomp Creative Studio should be proud of the work they did.

Mostly Basecamp, Google docs, email, boords, frame.io, and just a few video (Zoom) calls throughout. Al was on his game, and kept the project on track with proactive communications.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We had some tough feedback about some of the voiceover artists provided; the audio samples were all from radio ads, which have a different sort of patter, tone and voice than corporate explainer videos. But even when we had some less-than-stellar feedback, Chomp was able to take our criticisms and concerns to heart.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Al has already taken to get voiceover rolls for corporate explainers. So they're already doing the one thing we had a major issue with. I think if we had standing wrap meetings via video once a week we might not have had the project "go dark." At my company we're very driven by Google Calendar and Zoom. So if it's not on the calendar, things get submarined swiftly here.

After our discussion, CHOMP created a few storyboard images/options for the video design that our client loved on the first round. We started with a discovery meeting. The team took time to understand what was important to animate from our perspective and provided a lot of guidance on how to better define the project. Once the storyboard was created, we had é or 3 additional meetings to check progress and get alignment.

The final animation was about 1.5 min long and perfectly served the purpose we had in mind. We share it on our social media channels, integrate it into our commercial documents and show it on our website.

We worked with Al. He is a great communicator, structured, and helpful. He is a great bridge between the customer and the technical team that he represents. We enjoyed working with him at every step of the project.
