    Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

    By the time we had our restaurant opening, we were much more successful because the food delivery feature helped us to cover the whole city. We received great support from CDN team, who helped us securely and successfully launch a  system with all features that we had wanted.

    The project management was wonderful, someone from the CDN team was always available when we needed help and support. They are awesome at time management and meeting their deliverables.

    We used an Internet search platform for developers and professionals. We used online research tools as well. We published an offer, and a variety of developers and enterprises applied. We selected CDN because they had previous experience.

    CDN is easy to deal with from a customer point of view. They take responsibility for what they say, and for the scope of the project. We had an issue where the scope of the project was not completely clear. When we realized it was part of the scope, they assumed responsibility of the new piece of the project. They are very serious about their relationship with the customers and with their partner companies. They are a very serious enterprise, and they keep their commitments. There is a time delay, but they take their work seriously.

    Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

    The only thing we weren't completely satisfied with was a large time delay with the project. Their communication with respect to the code could be improved. We need complete documentation of the code as written as well as the steps that apply to distribution in the app world and other platforms. They gave us some documentation, but clearly, they can improve their documentation.

    The app had good ratings on the App Store, about 4.6 or 4.7 for the iOS version. Rating them from 1 to 10, I'd say the app worked at about an 8.

    It was successful, but not in time.

    Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

    They are hard working and very determined through the project.

    Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

    Time management. That is a problem for IT companies in general. That is the main issue that goes along with expectation management and client handling, which I think is a cultural thing more than an individual CDN issue. We are a German company, and we have the reputation of being clear in our answers. We like to hear if a schedule is slipping, but there are problems when someone tells me I will get it tomorrow, and then it takes a week. That’s what I mean by expectation management.

    CDN is an Indian company, and I think the culture makes it difficult to say that something is not going so well. They may think it makes them look not competent enough, which is definitely not the case. Everybody knows that projects can take longer and that problems can occur. This is an example of time and expectation management. That is what I would improve. This is also something in general for remote companies. It helps build trust. We trust them; otherwise, we wouldn't have hired them for this project. That could be done better, and the trust from our end would be established more easily.

    We needed some assistance. We're on Platform Build Five. But, back when we were trying to meet a deadline for Platform Build Three, we needed some help. Our team here, we were just working insane hours. So, the way that it came about when we contacted them was that we did a typical search where you're looking for extra help, and you go online to find an extra developer here and there.

    What ended up happening, ironically enough, is that one of the partners, he went to China, fell in love with a girl, and went to China to be with her. Through his travels, he ended up making new friends and, through a friend of a friend, it turned out he was one of the developers that worked on our project. He worked for this company, he recommended them highly, and so it was one of the people that we were looking at just to help us out.

    So, it was great working with them. They served as like a night crew for three months. The developers were very friendly, they followed our instructions, and they made sure that they were using best practices in their development. Whenever we found errors in the integration or whatever that we had difficulty, we would send them back the code, and they wouldn’t make a fuss. They understood that they had to meet specific requirements for it to work.

    What specific platforms were they developing for?

    Just backend stuff. Just in the Javascript – they needed some help with the filters.

    How long ago was the project completed?

    It was for the summer, so the end of August.

    Can you provide a cost estimate for the project?

    It was under $10,000. The agreement that we worked out with them was something that would be the equivalent to a salary, where we have extra developers, so it was great. I think in total it must have been $4,500 to $5,500.

    Exactly. But, I like the fact that when we did have problems, we would just send it back and say, "Hey, listen, it just doesn’t match up. If you're looking at this JS file or at the PHP that's written here, you’ve got to make sure that it matches." They were really good.

    We have some mobile developers in house. The problem is resources really. We’re a media company that comes to trade mostly on video, but we looked at a lot of IT solutions for our call-based clients. We’re based in the United Kingdom, and we looked at outsourcing to U.K. developers, but the cost was just too high compared to what the guys in India could offer us.

    What would you say is a general cost range for the project? 

    We’ve done probably about $5,000 or $6,000 per project with them. It varies between $3,000 and $10,000.

    When you’re working with CDN, is there anything that stands out as being unique or special compared to other developers you worked with in the past?

    We work with three different companies in India, all at the same time, on various mobile projects. I would say that, in comparison with the other guys that we worked with specifically in India, they have a lot of resources. So, if I need something done quickly, I know I can rely on them getting it done for me within the timeframe because they’ve got the resources in-house to handle to put more people on the job, if necessary.

    Is there anything that you could see them doing slightly better or maybe improving upon?

    Obviously, the biggest barrier we did with CDN, but it’s not just a barrier with CDN, it’s a barrier with most companies in India in general is the communication breakdown. It’s being able to communicate to them to exactly what we need to do. We always get there in the end but, often, there’s a little bit of backward and forward into making sure they’ve understood completely what we need to do. If they had somebody, either from the United States or the U.K. who could project manage some of this stuff, it might be a bit smoother. Having said that, all it would do would be save a little bit of time really because, in the end, we’ve always gotten there.
