MCI AR Photo-Realistic Seats

Prior to this experience the MCI sales and marketing team only had access to photo-realistic images of their custom coach seats to show towards potential customers along with sample fabric patterns. With the new AR experience built by CADmechXR, a sales representative can now bring in true scale representations of the actual seats in their actual environment! Additionally, with this application, sales representatives can also

switch between fabrics, pattern styles, and lighting conditions instantanously with a touch of a button. 

 

Overall, this application is meant to help drive customer engagement as well as increasing buyers confidence in customers by allowing them to see a virtual representation of the actual product. 

Mitchell Plastics AR Marketing Image

Mitchell Plastics AR Marketing

This project was an Augmented Reality (AR) marketing tool utilizing a mobile device to virtually showcase different finishes on plain plastic injection molded parts. With this application, this allows Mitchell Plastics to showcase different material finishes on new plastic parts much faster and cheaper without having to go through physical production of the various finishes.

360° VR Hazard Training

CADmechXR team created a new VR training application on the Oculus Quest for onboarding new employees on safety procedures. Think WHMIS training but in Virtual Reality! Users have 1 Minute in various real work environments to find hazards in their workplace. Management can also acquire analytics on the progress of the employees. Work environments were all filmed using 360° cameras. Overall, this VR training application can help

with knowledge retention in training as well as improving safety of workers.

 

This is a VR training application that allows production engineers to assess if the assembly procedure of an engine into a new vehicle frame is too complicated. 

Users of this experience have their phyiscal hands and arm tracked to understand if there is enough access to the nuts and bolts to assemble the motor. Additionally, with hand tracking, users can use hand gestures to move the full assembly or sketch 3D lines in

VR to highlight concerns or showcase optimal routing of electrical wires to the design engineers. 

VR Training on Injection Molding Machine

This VR training application was created to onboard new employees that are to operate on an Injection Molding machine. Trainees in this experience, can walk around a machine, inspect it, interact with it and really learn it before moving on to the real thing!

A VR quiz module was also developed to test operators on their understanding of the machine. Eye tracking functionality is also embeded in this application so that

additional data on the trainee's training experience can be captured for management to assess. Questions such as, "Did the trainee watch the full length of the video?" and "Was all the information recieved?" can all be captured using the eye tracking feature.

Overall, this VR training application can be completed by trainees without affecting production of an actual injection molding machine all while improving the training process of operators to ensure that they operate on the machine safely and efficiently.

Augmented Reality Pump Maintenance

This application shows off the power of AR and how it can be used for training and maintenance purposes.

We modeled a pump in 3D and anchored it to a real life object such as a motor using image tracking technology. Users of this application can visualize AR assembly proceedures, have access to part spec. information (such as nut size, torque values, etc.), engineering drawings and real-time IoT data, all in one

application.

Please describe your company and your position there.

We are a tier 1 automotive supplier that manufactures and decorate s plastic automotive interior components. We have 7 manufacturing plants across North America with our headquarters being in Ontario, Canada. I am a project engineer working on launching new programs.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire CADmechXR?

We have a lengthy back and forth with our customers in regards to them choosing one our our decorative finishes. In addition we have situation when our assembly equipment is behind schedule. We reached out to CADmech to see if we can implement AR & VR solutions to mitigate these issues.

What were your goals for this project?

To create a POC with a small library of decorative finishes that we offer to be digitally imposed using AR on physical parts. Also, to explore the capabilities or creating a AR training module for training our machine operators as well as injection mold technicians.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

I noticed that Victor Troung was posting on social media that he was developing AR/VR software and solutions for CADmech. I reached out to Victor with a proposal of possible implementations that would be useful for Mitchell Plastics.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

CADmechXR provided two different projects for us that showcased their XR capabilities. The first project was an Augmented Reality (AR) marketing tool utilizing a mobile phone to virtually showcase different finishes on plain plastic injection molded parts.

To accomplish this task, CADmechXR had to digitally recreate three of our finishes and develop a mobile app that tracks the plain plastic part and apply the different finishes onto them using AR technology.

The result was a photorealistic representation of how the final finished part will look like. What this enables is a more rapid and simplistic way to visualize the different material finishes without having to physically apply them to the unfinished parts.

The second project was a Virtual Reality (AR) training tool using the Oculus Quest system for onboarding new operators on our injection molding machines. To accomplish this task, CADmechXR had to import and optimize the 3D CAD file of an injection molding machine for VR.

Afterwards, interactions that showcased information on the machine as well as informational videos were developed. A VR quiz module was also developed to test operators on their understanding of the machine.

Lastly, an eye tracking function was also developed for this experience so that additional analytical data on the operators VR experience can be captured for management to assess (ex.

Did they watch the full length of the video?, Was all the information received?) The result was an onboarding VR training module for new operators on our injection molding machine that can be done without affecting production time as well as improving the training process of our operators to ensure a safe and efficient workplace.

What was the team composition?

Our main point of contact was Victor Truong, who was the Lead VR/AR Developer at CADmechXR. Victor coordinated with his team of 3D modellers, UX/UI designers, and Developers to get both these projects done in a timely manor. Minimal guidance was required and only a single storyboarding session was sufficient to planning out the VR and AR experiences on our end.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We were not able to implement any of the solutions as of late. For the marketing application, we noticed that the color matching to our real world finishes was difficult.

Whereas for the training application, we are still exploring implementing the solution, however, at a later date when we have a program launching at our Canadian plants.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Program management was great, all deadlines were met for the meeting dates set. I was informed regularly on the progress of the project. Also, any questions we answered in a prompt and timely manner.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The speed at which the proof of concepts were created. AR/VR technology is still an emerging and quickly evolving technology. I was very impressed with the system and process which they have created to implement the AR/VR solutions which we requested.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There no areas I can think of to improve the experience we had with this short project. All requests were fulfilled and communication was excellent.
