We came to Big Pixel with the goal of rebuilding our 12-year old platform from the ground up. Big Pixel was tasked with creating a robust and scalable solution that could handle both the technical intricacies of our service requirements to customers and provide an improved user experience.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

1. Complete System Rebuild: Big Pixel successfully rebuilt over 10 years’ worth of code from our previous WordPress-based system into a fully custom software solution. This transition marked a significant technical achievement, improving both system performance and maintainability.
2. Improved User Experience: The new system features a user-friendly and visually appealing interface, making it easier for end-users to navigate while maintaining the necessary complexity on the back end. The emphasis on design and functionality reflects a clear alignment with our original vision.
3. Increased Efficiency: The new custom-built solution has streamlined operations, replacing an outdated system with a more scalable, modern infrastructure. This allows for better handling of processes and data, which improves both performance and scalability moving forward.
4. Enhanced Communication and Collaboration: Big Pixel’s ability to communicate technical complexities in a way that our non-technical team could understand fostered smoother collaboration. This transparency and open communication ensured that progress was aligned with expectations throughout the project.

Despite the project’s complexity, they remained responsive and demonstrated a strong sense of urgency in addressing the challenges we faced. Our project timeline was extended by mutual agreement as the scope of the project changed over time.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

What really set this company apart was how approachable and down-to-earth they were while being experts at what they do. They took the time to explain complicated features in a way that allowed us to make informed decisions and feel confident in the end result. The team's dedication to our brand identity in the UX redesign was also impressive. They didn’t just give us a cookie-cutter design—the new interface is fresh and modern, but also has some fun,quirky Easter eggs along the way. And honestly, they were just a lot of fun to work with. For a long-term, high-stakes project, that made all the difference.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Big Pixel could have done differently?

An area for potential improvement could be enhancing the QA process to ensure an even smoother development process and minimize the need for revisions. Additionally, due to the size and complexity of the project, it may have been beneficial to conduct more thorough investigation into the existing product/code before initiating the rebuild. Overall, the team did a great job, and refining these aspects could elevate their already high standards.

I’m a research public health analyst for RTI International, a multidisciplinary research firm.

What challenge were you trying to address with Big Pixel?

We hired Big Pixel to develop a bespoke mobile application for mindfulness research and activities for a specific community. We were learning more about the community's stressors and different strategies to mitigate those stressors. We wanted to develop an app to help users learn about mindfulness and meditation to counteract stress.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The application was built from scratch and is available for iOS and Android. We gave Big Pixel an outline of what we wanted to do and gave them our survey questions, videos, audio files, and text. Big Pixel came up with the color scheme and design, and we went back and forth with what was feasible within the confines of our budget. Big Pixel used Figma for the wireframes. 

We wanted the app to have some gamification and to connect to biometric devices. During the research portion, the application had surveys, login screens, directions, and pop-up information about how to sync data from a user's biometric device.

We’re currently in the finalization phase of the project, and are removing the gamification and surveys on the application. We’re going to leave a list of meditations, calming audio files, videos with subject matter from experts in the field, general health tips, and a list of national resources. We plan to disseminate the app to the greater population as an encyclopedia of resources. 

What is the team composition?

We primarily work with David (CEO), a senior project manager, and we’ve met with their head designer. 

How did you come to work with Big Pixel?

We found them through a Google search. We met with about five vendors, but we liked Big Pixel the most out of all of them. We appreciated their working style and felt their system was organic, interactive, and less regimented. We thought they would be a good fit because we were looking for an open and collaborative experience. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested around $70,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in December 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The project has been broken down into three parts: a pilot study with 10 participants, a main study with 50 participants, and we’re now in the last phase, where we’re going to send it out to the greater community. The initial pilot study had a 100% success rate, and we had a positive response from our participants in the following stage. The application meets our expectations. 

How did Big Pixel perform from a project management standpoint?

The project management hasn’t been perfect, but they’ve generally had good project management. When we explain what we want, they make sure that what they deliver aligns with what we’re looking for. Any issues we’ve encountered have been handled immediately, and everything has been resolved quickly. We communicate over Zoom and email. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

We had no idea how to design an app, and Big Pixel has steered and guided us the whole way to make a beautiful product. We never thought we would end up with something as great and interactive as we have. They love their work, and that shines through. Their design skills are very impressive, and everything is clean. 

We aren’t the easiest client to work with because we haven’t laid out anything clearly on our end, and we go back and forth a lot, but they’ve been successful and manage us very effectively. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

We’ve had to send a few follow-up emails to our project manager, but that’s the only place we think they could improve. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have an initial discussion about what you want to accomplish, and then take time to devise a plan and write it all down. Be prepared when you meet with Big Pixel and know your endpoint so they know what you’re looking for.

We are an interior design, custom drapery design firm with our niche focus on creative custom window design and anything with custom soft-goods (bedding, pillows, re-upholstery, new upholstery, etc). We are a small woman owned business established in 2009 with 4 staff (3 designers and one office manager). Brenda Baxter is the owner/principal designer. We are in the process of researching and writing a comprehensive specification on a platform to connect live music professionals to buyers. This will be presented in several months. Over the past four years Big Pixel has been working with our team to create an application to enhance the live music experience for fans. This is an ongoing project

We were given design elements that far exceeded our expectations. Gary created amazing designs, in which we were able to replicated into more screens and user pathways. The work we received was spot on and demonstrated a clear understanding of what we wanted to accomplish with the new design. We received the Figma pages we requested and quite honestly were blown away at the attention to detail.
