Lumosity iOS App Image

Lumosity iOS App

Lumosity iOS App is a part of the brain training program developed by Lumos Labs, Inc. The App represents a collection of mobile games designed by scientists to challenge the user’s core cognitive abilities. In addition, appropriate user statistics are being collected and used to generate a customized training program based on the user’s cognitive performance.

Our engineers were part of Lumosity's mobile team and helped

making this awesome application.
Lumosity Android App Image

Lumosity Android App

Our team helped Lumosity to create a great android experience that landed its application on the “Google Play Store – Best Apps of 2014” list. The aim of this project was to create a library for sending different data to different endpoints without losing packages and to improve the persistence layer, resulting in better overall architecture and responsiveness of the application. By closely working with the data engineering

team, and leading the initiative to introduce dependency injection, we brought the testability of the application to the next level.
Cloud-based Data Platform Image

Cloud-based Data Platform

Together with our client’s engineering team, we’ve developed a cloud-based Data Platform for business visionaries, data engineers, and data scientists. Its first and foremost purpose is to provide an integrated environment for developing, deploying, managing advanced analytics, data science, and artificial intelligence services. Our engineers’ main goal was building data pipelines by using technologies like NiFi, PySpark, MinIO

for specific use cases such as Regulatory Reporting as a Service and Curation Rules.
Lumosity Advertising Tool Image

Lumosity Advertising Tool

Lumosity Advertising Tool is an internal tool for managing and optimizing large advertising campaigns. The tool provides actions like text upload and ads display, automatic changing of bids on a campaign level, campaign copying, deployment of standard ad groups and more. All of these helped the acquisition team speed up advertising by branching out into different geographic areas.

Order and Warehouse Management System Image

Order and Warehouse Management System

We worked closely with Unchained Logistics to replace jQuery with React/TypeScript and to add new features to their warehouse management system. TypeScript allowed them to catch bugs earlier while switching to React improved the overall structure of their front-end application. These upgrades made further development easier and also more accessible to new developers.

Extend API and Analytics Integration Image

Extend API and Analytics Integration

Our team helped 7 Cups to improve their application for connecting professional therapists and trained listeners to the people who seek emotional support. The project goal was to improve the scalability of the system by refactoring API and making thorough documentation. Also, our team assisted clients product team to import events and endpoints for product analytics services.

Lumosity Ad Manager Image

Lumosity Ad Manager

Ad Manager is focused on advertising inventory tracking. The application tracks ads throughout their entire lifetime supporting template creation, batch deployment, and campaign management. For the deploy and campaign management, it relies on various in house developed API tools. The Ad Manager uses robust underlying technology, and client libraries from vendors, as well as custom-written code for API communication.

Heymarket Android App Image

Heymarket Android App

We developed a modern mobile application for Heymarket business text messaging software that is used for customer service, operations, logistics, or sales. Our approach was to utilize material design as the base for the UI to provide a fresh and clean look with responsive animations and transitions. The cross-platform messaging solution was used to reliably deliver messages to target specific audiences. The application allows a

high volume of messages to be delivered with minimal delay.
Shyp Web Dashboard Image

Shyp Web Dashboard

Shyp Web Dashboard was created as a result of great teamwork between Shyp’s and our engineers. This application allows users to manage a high volume of shipments for their business and personal accounts. They can integrate their Shopify or eBay stores, and import orders in bulk with a spreadsheet. Also, they can see all shipments at once, view their shipping and tracking information, select packaging or schedule a pickup from

the web dashboard.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

Lumos Labs is the company behind Lumosity, a leading brain training program. Lumosity's web and mobile games are designed by scientists to challenge core cognitive abilities. I am the CEO of Lumos Labs.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire BDIT Engineering?

We started working with BDIT to augment our internal software development teams with their software engineering experts to manage our workload, free our time and enable us to focus on our core business. At first we partnered with BDIT to help us with iOS, Android and web development, but later on we used their data engineering services as well.

What were your goals for this project?

The goal of the initial project was to internationalize an application for the Italian-speaking market. We also needed to develop a mobile application for both iOS and Android to suit the platform’s norms and standards so that we could ensure the best experience for anyone using either platform. And lastly, the data engineering team had the goal to automate our workflow while providing marketing and management with valuable data that improves daily decision making.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

One of our team members had previously worked with BDIT Engineering and he was very impressed with their technical knowledge, productivity, and excellent communication. We reached out, conducted a series of interviews and ultimately decided to hire them. Their portfolio and skill set were outstanding and they quickly became our long-term service providers.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

The internationalization project included translating an application to Italian language, implementing reporting, event tracking and a new payment system. BDIT Engineering worked on our mobile applications as part of our US mobile team and they handled various tasks during the software development lifecycle. BDIT Engineering took the initiative when we needed to have our data organized and curated. They worked on many of our data engineering projects from scratch.

What was the team composition?

The team was composed of senior full stack engineers, iOS engineers, Android engineers and data engineers.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The internationalization project allowed Lumos to expand to Italian-speaking market. BDIT Engineering has helped us launch our mobile applications on time and on budget. BDIT’s data engineers have helped us create data ingestion tools for offline marketing partners, dashboards and other reporting tools. This allowed us to work with several vendors, deploy tests, and manage performance ourselves.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Project management was provided by Lumos Labs, while BDIT Engineering provided dedicated remote engineers. The team always had great response time and amended deadlines to accommodate our needs. The time-zone gap between San Francisco and Serbia never presented an issue, moreover in some cases it was advantageous to have a team that handled our urgent issues after we went home from work.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

From the very beginning, BDIT Engineering has shown to be dedicated and reliable. After over nine years of collaboration, I can still say that the level of their commitment hasn’t changed. They constantly challenge themselves to be innovative and push our products to the next level.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We have regular meetings with management and engineers from BDIT Engineering, and that allows us to be flexible and to continually improve our cooperation. They have great engineers and provide excellent quality, but they should improve their marketing approach in order to gain more exposure and visibility to companies in need of skilled engineers.

BDIT Engineering has been able to provide all the necessary resources to meet all needs. Their expertise, commitment, and ability to effectively manage the workflow while working remotely made them a reliable partner.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the CEO of Unchained Logistics. We're a software company that also handles logistics.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with BDIT Engineering?

We needed a vendor to help us develop an iOS app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We're using BDIT for the general backend development as well as the frontend work. The engineers they assign to us work remotely with our team on a full-time basis. Generally, they use node.js and React to build on top of the work that had already been done and add new features. One of the projects they helped us with was developing an iOS consumer-facing app for our client. They worked on the driver's version of the app and developed new features for our warehouse apps, which we're running on iPads. In addition, they rewrote the code for our existing admin web application.

What is the team composition?

We work with about five of their engineers and a project manager. For the iOS app development project, they assigned a much larger team to us.

How did you come to work with BDIT Engineering?

We worked with their team when they were still part of a different agency, so we continued working with them when they started a new company.

How much have you invested with them?

We've spent over $200,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in January 2017, and the relationship is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We do a standard code review routine, where different engineers review each other's code. We also use Pivotal Tracker to track the speed at which they handle a certain amount of complexity. In addition, we use some tools to track the code churn and the contributions of individual engineers on a weekly basis. BDIT has performed according to our expectations and we plan to continue working with them.

How did BDIT Engineering perform from a project management standpoint?

Our in-house team does most of the project management, but BDIT helps us keep the projects on track. We haven't had any issues with them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I've worked with over a dozen remote teams and it was often a frustrating experience. BDIT is one of the best remote teams I've worked with. The quality of their work is very high and they create a lot of value.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. We've had a very good working relationship with them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you have a strong engineering team of your own, BDIT can collaborate with your team. If you have a weaker engineering team, they can improve it.
