We’re a publishing company working in the education field, specializing in cartography for schools. I’m a co-owner.

What challenge were you trying to address with Appidea?

We wanted to turn our idea into a web platform. We’d created a multimedia desktop application before, so the next step for us was to make a web version.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We spent a lot of time discussing possibilities: there were a few ways to build the app, so we explored our various needs. Appidea wrote the application from scratch using JavaScript, Bootstrap, and jQuery.

It’s a web application that works on any type of device, with the goal of presenting our cartography material. We have a lot of maps, for geography or history lessons, and the app provides students and teachers with access to them. The users can create personalized maps with exercises assigned to each one, as well as conduct sophisticated search and notetaking mechanisms.

What is the team composition?

Their owner was our main point of contact and they assigned three people to the project, including designers and coders.

How did you come to work with Appidea?

We’d worked with their owner on a project a few years ago. We reached out to a few companies about the current project, but our experience with Appidea had been very good already, so we chose them. We knew them as professionals with whom we’d had good contact.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $50,000 so far, but it’s difficult to give estimates for the next stage.

What is the status of this engagement?

The collaboration formally started in January 2018, but we started the discussions earlier than that. We expect to finish the first stage at the end of 2018, and we’re planning a new one for the first half of 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

In general, we’ve had a very good experience with Appidea. The app is still in development, so it isn’t available to clients yet, which means I have no metrics. They built a web viewer for the maps, and our team now has to load all of our content onto it, so it will be a few months before clients are able to use it. We’ll start beta testing at the beginning of 2019.

How did Appidea perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very professional. We managed the project through a scrum procedure, and it went well. They have very good skills in this field.

Our team is divided between multiple countries, so we work using email and agile tools like Jira and Trello. We also have Skype conferences, scrum reviews every three weeks, and team meetings at each stage of the project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very flexible, and, at the same time, very professional, which is impressive. They really hear what we, as the client, want to make. One of their owners has excellent skills for explaining complicated IT notions to people less versed in the field. He can explain what should be done and what would be the best solution, which is very reliable.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

They’re a good company to work with. We’ve been in this field for 20 years and find them to be a professional team.
