What challenge were you trying to address with 3Brain Technologies?

I had developed software by myself for the past 8–9 years and started my own business. One of my first clients needed to build an iOS and Android application for their equipment management system. It was initially built only on iOS.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

3Brain referred to the live product throughout the process but, we also provided Postman scripts and a bit of documentation. One of the app’s unique requirements was that it had to work offline. We reviewed the existing app and discussed any questions their team had.

3Brain Technologies then wrote the app for us in React Native, which meant we could deploy the same app for Android and iOS. Their team essentially provided the frontend work because the backend and APIs were in place. After they achieved the app’s existing functionalities, their team added to the product.  

Large construction sites involve big machines that require a lot of maintenance and compliance. The product allows users to perform check sheets on a machine. Users scan a machine’s QR code and the app pulls up all the details. They can then fill out a form with 20–30 items, attach photos and descriptions, and create jobs with it.

What is the team composition?

I worked with two people and a full-time developer also worked on the project.  

How did you come to work with 3Brain Technologies?

I posted about my project and found 3Brain on Upwork. I received about a dozen proposals and held a bunch of interviews. The biggest considerations were the number of successful projects, the total budget, and their reviews. 3Brain had a decent-sized team too, which meant if we needed to pick up the pace in the short term, they could add more resources.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $12,000 on this module.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the project in November 2020 and completed it in January 2021. We'll work on the other modules together too.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Their team quickly built the product’s main functionalities, and then we shared that on TestFlight with our customers who were really happy with it. This module was essentially a test run. As I’m happy with them, we’ll start building the other modules together too.

How did 3Brain Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicated via Zoom calls and shared documents through Postman. We basically thought it would take a month to build the first module and their team was essentially right on the mark. They were also transparent, completing weekly builds for us. If their team had any questions, they asked right away.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I was impressed by their ability to start the project with few materials. Their team was able to start their work using the initial version of the product and a little bit of documentation. There also wasn’t much back and forth with the developers. We gave their project leads the specifications who then correctly translated them to their developers despite not having experience in the client’s industry.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, they did a great job.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you give them project specs, you’ll save a lot of time and money.

We needed to build an interface for people who order background checks. Users needed to be able to input a person’s details and conduct a background check.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They built a web app using React. We came to them with just an idea and they helped us throughout the process. They were also involved in UI/UX, design, and development. They also discussed how the API should work.

I worked with a co-founder and a software engineer directly.

How did you come to work with 3Brain Technologies?

I found them on Upwork and then I interviewed 7–8 companies and freelance workers. I selected 3Brain Technologies based on their portfolio and the suggestion they made in our initial call.

The project lasted from October–December 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

3Brain Technologies was absolutely amazing. They definitely surpassed my expectations. We haven’t launched yet, but a bunch of our potential customers like how the interface looks.

How did 3Brain Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

We split the project into different parts with their own deadline. Once they delivered each part of the project, we tested it, provided feedback, and moved on to the next step. Although they needed to work on a few items a little longer, other things were done quickly. Generally, they delivered as expected.

I usually spoke to our project manager about big ideas, but I spoke directly to the software engineers when I wanted to discuss specific details. It worked out really well.   

What did you find most impressive about them?

They worked very quickly. If we missed a deadline, it was usually because I hadn’t completed a task. They were also super experienced in React. I had a few ideas at the beginning of the project, but they suggested we start from scratch. In the end, that worked out well because we got a cleaner code base that is easier to maintain. Overall, the quality of their code is pretty good.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They’re pretty amazing — I don’t think they need to improve anything.  

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It’s completely fine to have a rough idea when you first reach out to them. For someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience in design, 3Brain Technologies can really help. They collaborated with me to establish my requirements.

They planned well and gave us good timelines. Their quality is also good. In the beginning, the quality was lower than expected, but it’s much better now.

How did 3Brain Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

Their communication is efficient, and their project manager is very straightforward. When they don’t know something, they tell us and do their research. If there are any changes in plans, 3Brain Technologies manages expectations.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The team’s efficiency is impressive.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The design side could’ve been better more than the actual code. However, the team worked on it a lot.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I would recommend 3Brain Technologies if you’re looking to create MVPs. They plan well and are efficient.

I’ve worked with other development companies from India and Pakistan, and communication tends to be difficult because of the language barrier. With 3Brain Technologies, it’s much easier. I’m not sure how they perform on larger scale projects.

We needed someone to develop a mobile app white-box solution. The app will allow life coaches to connect with their subscribers and users and offer them specialized content.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They were in charge of developing mobile and web applications for the system, while I handled architecture and backend development. It’s a React Native application for both iOS and Android. Toptal hired both me and 3Brain Technologies. We have delivered an MVP so far.

What is the team composition?

My main point of contact is the manager. I also communicate with the engineer that I work with.

How did you come to work with 3Brain Technologies?

My client wanted someone from Toptal — a network for elite freelancers — to architect the solution. Once we had the foundation ready, we wanted to hire somebody that would be cheaper for the client to proceed with the development of the larger stuff.

My boss showed me three profiles to review, and we decided to hire 3Brain Technologies. The process was very transparent. I was aware of the rates of the people that they were hiring. They were the cheapest option.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I’m impressed with the quality of work they’ve done. I was responsible for creating the technical tasks, and they were very explicit in everything. All of the tasks were completed with high quality. 

In terms of architecting some of the solutions, I’m not that impressed with the quality of their work. When we wanted to do something that was a little out of the ordinary, they made some mistakes. However, we had a code review practice in place and were able to catch those issues very early.

How did 3Brain Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

We didn’t have any hard deadlines. It’s a startup project, and there weren’t any clients that we wanted to obtain by a specific date. I’m happy with the speed of development. We communicate via Skype. We also use GitHub.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re a very good value proposition for what they are.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They need to understand the bigger picture. When you understand the bigger picture, there are fewer issues. However, there weren’t a lot of issues.

Have somebody technical on your side to oversee the development of the project. They will deliver a good project, but you have to be explicit about what you want. You can only be specific when you have a technical person on your side.

The 3 Brain Technologies team is polite, professional, technically educated, and always quick to reply to my emails. They understood our requirements and regularly included us in all their project management meetings, this made the process to go really smooth and brought a lot of clarity well ahead of the final delivery.

Not really. They know their work best. Their expertise and professionalism were evident throughout the development cycle and we were very pleased with the final product.

We wanted to expedite our development process by adding some competencies in React Native and developing a mobile app that utilizes our APIs.

How did you select this vendor?

We conducted a selection process with multiple vendors, which involved several steps. First, we identified 5 software development houses based on their previous work through freelance sites like Fiverr. Then, we asked them to complete a small task—a subset of features that had to be developed within 24 hours—based on our budget. We asked each firm to submit both the compiled version and the source code. Finally, we evaluated each firm’s work in terms of our specifications, quality requirements, and established timeframe.

We hired Skyward to create a React Native mobile app that allows each driver to track their journeys, view information about their vehicle, chat with their preferred repair shop, and receive status notifications. Our tech stack included REST APIs, Google Maps API, OAuth 2 password flow, and OneSignal notifications.

A single developer from Skyward worked on the UI, and another developer handled the app’s logic and API wiring.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app is sold in conjunction with a service we offer, so we don’t have direct metrics, but I could tell that the app definitely enhanced our offering. Based on the feedback we received, we have some bugs to fix and improvements to make in terms of usability, which we will address in the near future.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Initially, we had difficulty with tracking their progress. This issue was fixed by creating a Google Sheet where we listed all the features and bugs and introduced regular checkups. We didn’t experience any language barriers.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Skyward demonstrated great knowledge of UI implementation. They delivered a clean React Native code that was easy to understand and maintain.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Their communication could be more open. At first, they didn’t identify issues in a timely manner, so we had a couple of deadline extensions as a result.
