Wolfcub Digital is handling the UI/UX designs efforts for a virtual reality company. In efforts to improve usability as well as the look and feel, their team is completely redesigning the software's UI.
The software is of a high standard and quality. It has received positive feedback and meets all the needed requirements. Wolfcub Digital followed the project timeline, delivered the product on time, and resolved issues. They're effective communicators in written, verbal, and visual contexts.
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the co-owner and technical director of Immersive Interactive Ltd. Our solution creates immersive environments that are virtual reality classrooms. It enables groups of people to share audio, visual, and other interactive features. In essence, it can be a place for education, simulation, and training.
Our core markets are primary education, special education, and medical training; we have a good variety of users. Our company supplies all hardware and installation services for these spaces. We provide our own software and content. However, we’ve also enabled the end-user to create their own content too. They can create videos as well as add interactive questions and hotspots to create their own lessons.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Wolfcub Digital?
We needed to do a major redesign and redevelopment of our software. Specifically, we wanted Wolfcub Digital to focus on the UI of the solution's editing section. Our goal was to create a world-class, online editor for those immersive experiences. We wanted to up the usability as well as the look and feel of the application. The vision was for the software to be on par with any top-of-the-line, world-class editing tool.
The key challenge was that we have such a wide diversity of users. The new software had to be something that was intuitive and simple to use; and at the same time able to create professional standard experiences. That’s why it was outside of our in-house expertise to come up with something that addressed all of those challenges.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Wolfcub Digital has been engaged in the complete redesign process of our solution. They’ve been working in sprints. First, their team conducted research on our business. This included interviewing our internal team and performing a competitor analysis. Their team held two-day in-person sessions in our office. During this, we did brainstorming exercises and discussed design. It was here that we extracted the core objective of the product, and our business goals as well.
We developed the idea of the kind of product we wanted and who our users will be. During this, we considered core markets and user avatars. Wolfcub Digital interviewed our current customers on how they use the software, as well as their likes and dislikes about it.
They filmed the interviews and created a report that confirmed a lot of what we were thinking. It was a very interesting and useful process because the feedback helped create our user journeys and profiles. That then fed into the design phase. Once they produced the initial wireframe, they tested it with our users.
Going from there, Wolfcub Digital went away and produced a series of reports, which they asked us to comment on. There were a number of outputs at that stage, and we decided that the next major phase was more in-person sessions.
We spent two days down in their office where we did continuous design sprints and processes. Together, we worked on the avatars and user journeys for the end-user. A big focus was on how the redesign would individually factor into those two aspects. We brainstormed ideas about the UI and put it all together to come up with a core user journey.
Wolfcub Digital gathered all the information to get a good idea of what they wanted to do. Next, they created a series of highly detailed user journeys. These weren’t wireframes but they encompassed what the final design of the software would look like.
Our team was able to click through them like a wireframe, but with much more detail. Wolfcub Digital produced dozens of these in different views, aspects, content, and components. This included side menus and user options. Essentially, they produced full specs for the new software.
What is the team composition?
I’ve worked with four people from their team. Since the initial design phase, I’ve had daily contact with just two team members.
How did you come to work with Wolfcub Digital?
They approached us for a previous project. That one was more software-focused so we didn’t have the budget to venture into UI. However, Wolfcub Digital did a convincing job with their proposal. I always had it in my mind that I’d like to go back and work with them. I knew I’d want their kind of service and treatment for our software when the time was right.
We found that budget at the start of this year, so I engaged them again. Luckily enough, they were available. Their team did another outstanding proposal based on the requirements I had spoken to them about. Overall, we’re really keen on working with them.
How much have you invested with them?
I’ve spent around £30,000 (approximately $37,000 USD).
What is the status of this engagement?
The project started in January 2020, and it’s ongoing. Wolfcub Digital delivered most of the product within three months.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The general feedback we've had is that the designs are outstanding. Internally, we’re very happy with it. Our team is delighted that the software meets all of our requirements. To a limited extent, we’ve shared it with some partners and resellers. They’ve also provided positive feedback. It’s something they want to use and want to get quickly released.
How did Wolfcub Digital perform from a project management standpoint?
Wolfcub Digital followed a good timeline and was punctual in delivery. All of their written communication is excellent, this includes presentation and documents. Their copy includes a lot of clear visuals that are made up of illustrations, diagrams, and photographs. This helps us understand the concept without having to read through a lot of text.
Day-to-day communication happens through Basecamp; it’s a good tool. It helps us share documents, hold discussions, and kick ideas back and forth. Overall, it’s been really useful to receive feedback and also give our input to them. We used InVision to produce all the wireframes so we could click through and view them. This allowed for comments, suggestions, and specific feedback. Wolfcub Digital responds to feedback and makes changes quickly. We also use Skype and Zoom to communicate.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their project methodology is very well-thought-out. Wolfcub Digital is outstanding; they have very good visual sense and excellent designs. We really like the way they implemented the whole process with the detailed ideation sessions. By this I mean their design sprint ideology, user interviews, and collaborative approach.
As a business, we input our knowledge and experience while allowing them to use their expertise in design, usability, and UI. Overall, the UI design is of the standard we expected; it’s a world-class and high-quality standard. Their process and the way they managed everything really stood out to me.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I think highly of them, there’s not a lot of room for improvement.
