BEWARE:

When I told this company I wanted to end our working relationship due to a lack of results, they offered to “add additional keywords” and asked me to sign for that update. What was presented as a service enhancement later appeared to function primarily as an unannounced and unrequested contract extension of several months.

When I told them a month later this still wasn’t working and wanted to cancel, they later sued me for the value of the newly extended contract—an extension I was never clearly told I was agreeing to.

Completely unethical. And shoddy work. 

Throughout the engagement, performance reporting was all red flags. I was repeatedly told to ignore Google, SEMrush, and other leading industry tools and to trust only their internal dashboard and proprietary tools, which they claimed were “more accurate.”

My website revenue and third-party metrics consistently contradicted their numbers by massive margins (e.g., ~50 visitors on my end for keywords they claimed were driving 100,000), and since their value was based on monthly visitors by keyword, this is seriously concerning. 

Based on my experience and in my opinion, this company relies on deceptive contract mechanics, unverifiable reporting, and legal pressure rather than creating value. Do not work with them unless you can afford to lose significant money and time defending yourself.

I also want to note it is common practice for SEO companies to write fake reviews- many do it for clients to get them to rank, let alone their own businesses. Be careful relying on web-based, "client" positive reviews on any site as anyone can write them. 

In my opinion, this is a great company to hire if you have $100k to flush down a toilet and time to spend in court.

VELOX manages our digital marketing spend for Google Ads, Bing, Facebook, and Pinterest. We’re trying to ensure that we have an adequate return on ad spend (ROAS) so that we can maintain a profitable bottom line.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The key deliverable that VELOX has to achieve is to provide a greater ROAS for us. We target an older audience demographic, which is 35–65 years old for women’s fashion. VELOX has helped us build this demographic up. We’ve also leveraged their services for SEO and keyword targeting.

I’ve worked with 8–10 people from VELOX. Morgan and Kendall (SEM Managers) lead the advertising efforts. Morgan oversees our campaigns on social media platforms, while Kendall works on our Google Ads. Josh (Senior Account Manager) serves as the project manager. They’re the core people we’ve worked with at VELOX.

I found VELOX by researching various agencies. They stood out from other digital marketing agencies because their approach was highly analytics-based. The team was also straightforward in terms of what we’d get for our investment.

We started working together in February 2020, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

VELOX has helped us grow the website to seven digits in revenue and seven digits in bottom line profitability. We’ve also achieved an overall growth in website traffic.

How did VELOX Media perform from a project management standpoint?

They don’t have a lot of turnover. As a result, we work with the same team members throughout the engagement. Other marketing firms bring in new people who only stay between 6 months–1 year, and when they hire new people, we have to teach them our business all over again. The new people have to learn how the company works, what our target keywords are, and what our brand voice is.

By contrast, VELOX has team consistency, which is helpful when it comes to running ads and producing the best outputs for our bottom line. They don’t have the same rate of turnover as other companies, so we don’t see any drop or gap in performance that usually happens with personnel changes. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Unlike other agencies that promise us the world but don’t deliver, VELOX delivers. Their approach also continues to be analytics-based. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

Bringing new people in every once in a while would be good. Working with the same people who manage our account is good, but that’s not necessarily the same for other people working under our account. 

Moreover, they should be more upfront about what is working with their other clients. That way, we can learn about the best practices that businesses have across categories. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Come to the weekly or biweekly meetings with clear measurable and direction on what you want to accomplish with VELOX. Keep an open dialogue and communicate with them

I am the VP of e-commerce for Progressive Lighting. We are a manufacturer and retailer in the standard and premium lighting space.

What challenge were you trying to address with VELOX Media?

Our goal was to grow our e-commerce channel, and we had looked into a couple of other paid search providers but had limited success so far. We have a huge product set that makes it pretty tough to do paid search well, so we brought on VELOX to help us tackle that challenge.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Originally, I went to them for help with paid search but ended up hiring them to do organic work as well. They handled structural changes to the site and how we present our material, but the majority of their work came in the form of off-site SEO. That included keyword targeting based on our existing customer data and link building to help us start ranking highly for those searches.

There are five team members in total who we work with across their paid search and organic search teams. We have one central account manager who coordinates the various parts of our relationship, and then we work with a content team of two people and a paid search team of two as well.

In looking for the right company to work with, I had done a lot of research among my connections in the e-commerce space. Several people recommended that I take a look at their team, so we had a few meetings to discuss how they run their operations and we felt very comfortable bringing them on from there.

The project started around July 2019 and is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They’ve done an excellent job on both SEO and the paid search side for us. We’ve more than doubled our revenue across the two, which was a huge turnaround from previous years of continuously dropping returns. Now, we’ve seen not only the initial return but also that both sides are continuing to move in a positive direction.

How did VELOX Media perform from a project management standpoint?

Their team does a really good job of pushing us when we weren’t getting stuff done in a timely manner. I haven’t had any issues with under-delivering, and they provide regular reports that allow us to stay up to date and talk through all of the analytics.

We have weekly calls to discuss what happened in the last week and how we might be making any changes going forward, which I find incredibly productive and helpful for my peace of mind as well as the project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their level of effectiveness is not one that you find among very many outsourcing agencies in this industry. They’re very smart about figuring out what we should do and explaining why that needs to be done.

Our internal team has occasionally overlooked things that they then pushed us towards and turned out to be great decisions, so we have been very pleased with the overall quality of their recommendations.

I really can’t think of anything they could improve off the top of my head.

First, you have access to the brightest minds at VELOX whenever necessary. I've worked with my account manager primarily, however, we've had some special sessions where even the CEO was involved.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We've seen increased revenue across the board while setting up our foundation, and building content and staff to have a breakout year in 2020. We save tons of time not having to guess what moves to make across many areas of our business. That's worth more to me than most areas, except profit, of course.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The workflow is seamless and entirely effective. They've developed ways to integrate with our company that we never thought of. Really helped us implement and utilize their services.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their leadership has it's finger on the pulse of the company and it's reflected professionally throughout. That translates into an effective client product and relationship.

Are there any areas for improvement?

It's sometimes difficult to integrate your company with another as intimately as needed. With services as important as what VELOX provides, although I was anxious at first, I'm not sure they could have done better, but I definitely would have felt more confident had I known how smooth and effective the end product was at the start.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Very poor results. Link-building and off-site content confined largely to press releases on random aggregators and links on Quora. We saw very little movement and almost no growth in organic traffic. Domain authority did not budge and those on the account provided no solutions or real strategy to growing our organic presence, but they did try - numerous times - to also manage our paid search efforts despite our noted disapproval of their SEO work.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Bad. They sent occasional emails and did not ask for approval before publishing releases or leaving comments (how is that considered SEO work?). They used no tools to manage workflow or share results.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Nothing.

Stop trying to upsell bad services and instead focus on providing real strategy and results for the scope of the agreed upon project.

I was looking for providers locally, so I'd have a chance to speak with them in person. We'd worked with a couple other vendors in the past, but weren't happy with their results. I heard of VELOX by word of mouth and thought they seemed highly capable after meeting with them. VELOX successfully put us on the first page of Google for many of our keywords. They even went out of their way to help us with additional keywords outside of the scope of work. Our current conversion rate is about 12% and our click rate is up by 2%.
