A communications company tapped Varfaj Partners to develop an Android & iOS app and an accompanying landing page. The app is intended to notify hosts of their guests’ arrival using push notifications.
Varfaj Partners has been unable to complete the app according to the client’s specifications, refusing to provide a refund or the standing MVP. Despite promising initial communications, the team has not followed through on their promises, causing a great setback in the client’s business. This review is an update by the client company. The original content is located below the new review.
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the founder and CEO of Arrived Communications, which was founded in 2018.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Varfaj Partners?
We were looking to develop an Android and iOS application that could bridge gaps in communication using automated push notifications, so we hired Varfaj Partners.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
The app that we asked Varfaj Partners to develop was intended to be used to notify a host when their guest has arrived at their address. It is similar in function to a doorbell, but it could also provide an ETA to the host.
Going into this engagement, my expectation was to receive a fully functional app and an accompanying landing page. The initial contract that I signed with them allowed for unlimited revisions as well. To this day, however, Varfaj Partners has not provided me with anything.
The team was working on the app, but each time they presented it to me, it looked mediocre. It was as though they were outsourcing the development because the app didn’t reflect what we discussed. What ended up happening was that every time a payment was due, they would mark that as a milestone. After I paid over 75% of the development cost, they no longer had an incentive to accomplish the app.
What is the team composition?
I have communicated with Steve (CEO), Ben (CTO), Niv (COO & Project Manager), and Jay (Development Manager & Designer). There was also Charles (Point Director) and Jared (COO). I eventually transitioned into dealing with Cameron (Head of Growth) and then with Dave (Managing Partner).
I’ve talked to multiple people from Varfaj Partners but still didn’t get the quality of work I was looking for. Kyle (Former CTO) had to leave their organization because they were biting off more than they could chew and were not properly paying him, so there are issues going on externally as well as internally.
How did you come to work with Varfaj Partners?
I was hoping to find a local agency as opposed to outsourcing the work overseas. That way, I could communicate face-to-face with the provider. I came across Varfaj Partners through Twitter and saw that they had already developed applications in the past, though that later turned out to be a lie. The sample application that they had shown me was actually developed by someone else, and that individual was the one that informed me that the app was not designed or developed by Varfaj Partners.
How much have you invested with them?
I’ve paid them around $30,000 at this point and with nothing to show for it. I’ve used my savings, pulled out a lot of personal lines of credit, and spent a lot on hotel reservations to see them personally, but the quality of what they presented me was not even worth $5,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The partnership began in February 2019. The person who was working on the development has left the organization, so we’re at a standstill. They believe they can no longer complete the product but Varfaj Partners doesn’t want to give me a refund or the app in its current state.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
How did Varfaj Partners address the challenges that arose?
Everything started to go downhill when Varfaj Partners started giving me an app whose quality wasn’t up to par with what we discussed. They were essentially making the app the way they wanted without addressing the things that I wanted to be changed. The team would always go back to the drawing board and come back with a product that reflected nothing of what we discussed. That’s what gave me the impression that they were outsourcing the work.
From their perspective, they feel as though I’m indecisive when in reality, they just bit off more than they could chew. Talking with Niv, I discovered that several others have gone through the same negative experience. They have a whole bunch of projects right now that are just sitting on the back burner.
They’re essentially just scamming people and it has become a major setback for me. I feel like I have missed out on a fortune because my app would’ve been very innovative. Other aspects of my life outside this business have suffered as well.
When I left my first review for their company on Clutch, they immediately stopped interfacing with me. I tried everything under the sun to get a hold of them until I was able to reach out to their project manager. That’s how we were able to reengage. Varfaj Partners felt like they had to make amends since my initial review could cripple their image, but it still felt like they specialize more in web development and were using me and others as guinea pigs to try to break into the app development market.
How was project management handled?
There were no milestones or commitment dates set. We simply had conversations via email, text, phone calls, and sometimes in person. They would promise to get back to me but would only do so whenever they wanted to. They need to improve on everything.
I wish I had done more research to look into their legitimacy. I’ve discovered too late that they’re not even with the Better Business Bureau. They have no structure and I felt like the project managers were simply shielding them from the customer base.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Do your research, especially around their legitimacy and the legitimacy of their sample works. As cliche as this sounds, if anybody talks too fast, they’re only after a sales pitch. Make sure that you’re hiring somebody that can actually get the job done based on their track record.

Feedback summary
Stakeholders are dissatisfied because, despite providing extensive guidance, their expectations were never met. While the team maintains a positive can-do attitude, they haven't followed through to deliver the outlined products. The group could be more focused on meeting deadlines.
BACKGROUND
Please describe your company and your position there.
I am the CEO/Founder of Arrived Communications founded December 2018, we have a total of 4 employees our intention is to bridge gaps in communication using automated push notifications.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
For what projects/services did your company hire Varfaj?
Our challenge is to design and develop a sleek, user friendly IOS application that simplifies processes of communication. We also required a landing page (Company Website) to get the ball rolling
What were your goals for this project?
The goal was to invest capital into a trust The vision for Arrived as well as this project is to change the world by simplifying the process of communication and automate push notifications of safe arrivals at destinations including planned events, safe arrivals home, school, work etc.
SOLUTION
How did you select this vendor?
12/28/2018, After making a tweet online requesting if anybody knew any app developers to help design and develop our idea I received a direct message from Varfaj Partners "Hey, just saw your tweet. Our app developers would love to help." I exchanged contact information with Steven Schwartz and immediately received a phone call, Steve who was then located in Chicago coordinated for us to discuss the scope of the project in person which later became a Coffee shop in the lower east side of Manhattan; Steve and I had an extensive conversation which included both back stories of our respective organizations/long term goals and visions to me being shown the "Vendefy app" that Steve claimed Varfaj designed and developed which would be launched in the Apple App Store "really soon". Everything from the long term vision for Varfaj and the sleek design of the Vendefy app gave me a level of confidence that Varfaj was the right organization to take on the task of developing our IOS mobile application. A couple weeks later after I received an official contract offer and spoke to a few references provided by Steve; These references were "friends" that have done business with Varfaj (Cameron LeCoque of Basecampfunds.com, Mark Plaskow of Scientific Clinics and Steven Peer of Sole Strike).
Describe the project in detail.
Although our contract was written rather vague by Varfaj it included "unlimited revisions until customer satisfaction" as well as a clause that any third party vendor to touch the app would have to be authorized by Arrived Communications - it was also verbally agreed that only "in house" Varfaj employees would be involved to ease my initial fear of going with Fiverr due to outsourcing; the details of the contract were to design and develop our IOS application, remake our company logo as well as design our company landing page (website) most of the granular project details were mainly verbally discussed and I took all conversations and verbal commitments at face value as an inexperienced consumer eager to get a new company off the ground while entrusting an organization that had seemingly been "there before". Immediately after starting the project with Varfaj (February 14th of 2019) A Slack chat group was created and broken down into the following subcategories "General, Design, Random & Website" Slack was a space where we could discuss ideas and receive status updates on all design and development changes.
What was the team composition?
I was assigned the following team members from Varfaj which I was told would work specifically on my project for the entire duration of the project (Niv Henn was my assigned Project Manager, Ben Devera was my assigned "Developer Manager" and Jay Ayoub was my assigned Designer) Jay who was said to be a Varfaj employee was later determined to have been a contractor who had worked previously with Co Founder Cameron Zoub with other companies in the past. Jay left stopped working with Varfaj because "Varfaj, started outsourcing the work for cheaper alternatives"
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
Unsuccessful is an understatement, this project has been nothing short of a disaster - We have constantly produced document after document to provide guidance and our expectations were never met. To date we continue to receive mediocre work and have requested a FULL refund after spending more than a year being ran in circles.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
What was most impressive about Varfaj was their positive "can do" attitude, any and everything sounds possible. Any request or Following through with effective communication and actually delivering the products requested/discussed are the only issue
Are there any areas for improvement?
They could have better communication & consistency in their efforts. That is an area in major need of improvement. My experiences with Varfaj included several instances where I was provided commitment "dates" that not only weren't met, I would have to be the one to reach out to them and find out that they weren't met. Examples of this include receiving updates, receiving quotes. Varfaj tends to give commitment dates by saying
RATINGS
Overall rating: 0.5 - Overall, I feel Varfaj has the potential to be great
Quality: 0.5 - Myself as well as team members of the Arrived organization has always felt the quality of work looked very poor and "dated"
Cost: 0.5 - Varfajs initially quote was GREAT, after seeing the poor quality and lack of receving a product of to be satisfied with we feel they are overpriced.
Schedule: 0.5 - Scheduling was/remains very inconsistent, could never get a consistent weekly meeting/conference bridge to receive updates.
Willing to Refer: 0.5 - Highly unlikely to refer Varfaj, this process has taken a toll on all parties involved on a personal level as well as a professional level.
