We hired Value Productions to create two marketing videos for us. Our goal was to have a premium-quality video with a low price point but good value.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially had a meeting with Value Productions to help them learn what we were doing. Once we moved forward, we had another meeting to talk about the creative assets we needed. We gave them a sample video and wrote the script. They reviewed said script, and we eventually went into preproduction. Their team gave us access to a bunch of stock video companies, and we shared the video clips we liked. 

From there, their editors started producing the videos. They used the archive video, laid out the voice-over, and added music. They also worked on some animated assets; they took screenshots of our design platform and animated them as part of the videos. The final length of the longer video was one minute and 40 seconds, while the shorter one was 50–55 seconds.

While we haven’t published the videos yet, we’ve shared them with many people. They thought the videos were wonderful. Some even asked us who made the videos and asked for a referral.

Value Productions’ project management was great. They delivered the project on time and within our budget. Moreover, the entire team was communicative throughout the entire process. They were easy to work with, answering our questions and making all the changes we wanted. They also got everything done on a quick timeline. There was a meeting with the manager and the team. I've described my project. They turned out to be very knowledgeable in many areas, including science. Meeting went very smooth and I was very excited that I've found people who understood me right away and I didn't have to spend more time on explanatory meetings. After the meeting I've received a link to a simple Script Template, which I've filled out and tried to be as descriptive as possible. Then Value Productions provided me with the project milestones and turnaround time. Basically, Value Productions did everything right with only one take and turnaround time was less than projected.

We had an upcoming booth presence at SaaStr, North America's biggest SaaS conference. Our booth had to have a video that accurately demonstrated our product, but also articulated the value it brings to an executive audience. We also wanted to get a video done of our most popular feature, PowerPaste, for digital marketing purposes.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We put an RFP on a project bidding platform and did our own pre-screening of companies and individuals. After reviewing the applicants and their work, we shortlisted our search to 7 vendors. We then conducted interviews of each one and ultimately decided on Value Productions.

The factors that influenced our decision were quality of work, experience making videos similar to what we were looking for (product demo), communication during the screening process (VP was very fast to get back to us during the screening process, which was a good indicator for how the project would go), and price. VP stood out in all of these categories over the other companies we looked at.

It started with the discovery phase, which was a series of zoom calls and sharing of our documentation and docs. This was by far the most work-intensive phase on our part, but it is critical to get it right. We then moved into some other phases, which were very smooth because VP took the time to understand our product and market.

After discovery, there were various storyboarding and production phases, during which we provided a surprisingly little amount of feedback (I think because Discovery was so intensive). Finally, the video was delivered on schedule and on budget. The team worked VERY hard to meet our tight deadline (following a reduced timeline from the beginning), which we appreciate!

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

Peter was involved in the sales process and helped us craft a project plan that worked for us. Once the project began, we worked with Thomas, our Project Manager, and Orest, the Creative Director. The feedback process was a series of Zoom calls, Google Docs, Miro board comments, and providing feedback through their video review tool, which made it really easy.

The team was receptive to feedback, but also had the maturity to push back on us if we proposed something that would clearly not work. I believe this was a key difference in working with a more experienced agency like VP, which we would have not gotten if we worked with a freelance animator.

We generated 150 leads at the tradeshow, thanks in part to our engaging booth and video! We plan to continue to use chunks of the video for advertising purposes on social media and YouTube. The ROI keeps compounding...

Very structured process that was detailed from the beginning. While they had their own tools (mentioned in a previous answer), they were also flexible to work with our tools, like Google Docs and Loom.

Instead of simply taking our idea and just executing it, they suggested things that we would have never thought of, which made it way better. We don't have the internal knowledge or experience in this area, so it was a big value-add.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

I should re-emphasize, everything went great. One suggestion for future clients is during the sales process, to set the expectation that the discovery phase will require a lot of time from the client but then it will be a far lighter workload once the video moves into production. This will help future clients plan their time accordingly and be able to dedicate the right amount of time to the video to ensure VP has what it needs, and it's a success.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The video was posted on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram a week ago, so I don’t have data to share yet. However, we have plenty of internal and external feedback saying that it’s a step up from our past marketing content. It’s the first time that we have a video for our website. We usually only have user guides or one-sheet pages.

They were great. Value Productions was always hands-on with the deliverables. We just told them our idea and how we wanted the video to be, and they gave us different options and told us the type of work that would be best for us. I mentioned I wanted to do animation, but they explained it would be too heavy, so they came out with another option.

We just used Slack to communicate and send the screenshots.

This was my first experience with a video production company, but their work was overall impressive. Also, they ensured they made the product that we wanted, which was something we valued.

They could provide the option to pay a portion at the start and final payment at the end of the project instead of hourly or weekly. The weekly payment made the project more expensive on our end given that we had to pay fees with each transaction.

We needed a set of videos for our website and our paid video campaigns. We gave them an initial storyboard and brief and they started from there. Then they came with different proposals for each video. They also sent different options for background music and VO artists. We had 2 creative meetings to brainstorm ideas and find solutions to some creative issues we found on the way.

Almost each day they were sending parts of the materials so we could accept and move forward. Vitor always had an amazing communication with us.

We worked with Vitor, their PM that always communicated us any issue, need or concern and showed us a preview in each production stage. The feeback process was super smooth and they were really open to hear our comments, ideas and needs. Even though we had different time zone we never felt a lack of communication.

We showed the videos to our management team and they really liked. We had super positive feedback from all the team saying that the video looked super professional with a fresh and dynamic vibe. They highlighted the fact that the videos resumed in a great way what our product offers with its key benefits and features.

We used InVision, Figma and Frame.io for all the multimedia elements. Also we connected via Slack to have an active communication.
