We started the relationship with Tenup while we were with OpenChannel, and Tenup supports OpenChannel customers with professional onboarding services and monthly support of their marketplaces. Tenup has been incredibly involved with all the new initiatives we’ve been taking on.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
The first thing that Tenup assists us with is migrating over all the OpenChannel customers into our infrastructure. We sit down with Tenup and talk about the customer's goals, and then a manager from our side and Tenup’s side reach out to the customer to schedule the migration.
During that process, the Tenup team comes up with a list of what the migration will look like, the timeline, and the expectations of what will happen, and they communicate that to the customer. Once the customer signs off, Tenup takes the full cycle and takes the lead on migrating the customer over.
The second thing we’re working on with Tenup is adding professional services. If a customer wants to change anything in their marketplace or add new features or functionalities, the Tenup team takes the lead on the actual implementation. They meet with customers weekly to ensure everything is on track and that everything is up to date and supported going forward.
The Tenup team is also involved with making sure we are up to date with compliance, have high availability, and update software to ensure we’re meeting our customers' needs.

We work with about seven people from Tenup.

Tenup was working with OpenChannel previously, so when we took over, we kept them on board and renewed the partnership.

We wouldn’t be able to survive without Tenup. They handle all of our software development which is a key part of the entire project. Their partnership is completely invaluable. Our customers have also been very happy with the support they’ve received from Tenup, and it’s been fantastic.

The first few projects we went through were more of a testing phase as we were developing our new relationship and going through the process for the first time. Since then, everything has been seamless. We have weekly calls with them, and everything is always on time. They’re incredibly responsive, and we communicate with them through Slack and Google Meet.
Tenup is in a different time zone, but that has never been an issue, and they work incredibly hard to make everything work easily on our end. Their communication is fantastic, and they’re transparent with us about everything.

We have nothing but incredible things to say about Tenup and their services. There are many moving pieces with the project, and they’ve hit the ground running and have done nothing but support and deliver things on time. BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CTO of OpenChannel, a SaaS B2B company that provides a SaaS platform and services that help our customers build app ecosystems, marketplaces, and directories. Our business isn’t mobile-focused; rather, we provide app exchange ecosystems or app stores to our customers.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Tenup Software Services?
A lot of our customers want plenty of customization in their app stores. They want their app directories to have a custom-branded look and feel as well as custom features, functionality, and workflow. However, all these individual customization efforts have been divergent from our goals because we’re mainly focused on providing a SaaS product and improving it.
As a result, we’ve brought in Tenup Software Services to outsource the customization work. We collaborate closely with them to ensure a high standard of quality for the marketplaces that we build, customize, and deploy to our customers. At the same time, we leave the management of these projects to Tenup.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Tenup works like a trusted partner on our behalf. The vast majority of their work involves frontend customizations using Angular and Java, but they also work on implementing workflow features. For instance, a customer may not want their partners to simply register and start submitting apps; they may want their partners to request an account first before submitting apps, so Tenup builds that feature. On top of that, the team deals with more complex requirements from companies and providers, handling workflows that are implemented within a web app.
Meanwhile, our process starts when a customer onboards with us. They sign a contract and give us requirements and design mockups. From that point on, one of OpenChannel’s project managers sets up a JIRA board that contains tasks based on the requirements we’ve received from the customer. Then, a project manager from Tenup grooms tickets in an agile scrum process, taking the time to understand what the customer is trying to achieve with their requirements and mockups.
Afterward, the Tenup manager passes those tickets along to their engineers, who then make changes. When those individual changes are done and committed to the repository, the changes are launched to the staging site. Tenup QAs evaluate those tickets and tasks to make sure that the code is running properly and that the feature is achieved. Once the QAs approve the code, it’s delivered to the client. Overall, the Tenup team is technically responsible for deploying those finished features as releases into production.
What is the team composition?
We work with around 12–14 people from Tenup, including two project managers. Our main point of contact is Kaushal (CEO & Founder). We also work with Madhuri (Project Manager), and we only recently added a second project manager.
How did you come to work with Tenup Software Services?
I found them on Clutch. We interviewed a lot of companies and asked them to bring their technical leads. In the end, Tenup had the strongest technical lead. He was smart, and he understood our concepts right away. He also knew the technology we used back to front. This gave us the confidence that he could lead this engagement from a technology perspective.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent around $500,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The engagement started in January 2019, and it’s ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
One of the quality metrics that we look at is the features. For instance, if a customer comes to us with 10 features, we deploy those features and see how many bugs or issues appear within any of them. So far, we’ve seen successful results.
Moreover, one of our biggest fears has been doing a lot of handholding. If we’re putting in plenty of time and effort for that, then the partnership is still divergent from our goal. As a result, we need a partner that can make tough decisions and implement them correctly. With Tenup, we’ve done a bit of handholding to bring them up to speed in the beginning.
However, over the past year, they’ve pretty much run autonomously. They can make technical decisions and run with them. Meanwhile, the amount of involvement required from our end is very low, and we’ve seen absolutely fantastic results. Overall, being able to hand the work off to them and getting it done is the biggest success we’ve seen in the whole partnership.
How did Tenup Software Services perform from a project management standpoint?
They’re responsive. We have daily calls to go over the status of our projects, and they manage priorities well by listening to customers’ needs. The tasks and items get completed within a good amount of time, so I don’t have anything negative to say about their project management.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The absolute top highlight from Tenup is Kaushal, who’s in the solution architecture side of things. He’s able to listen to complex requirements and architect a proper solution for them, and that bleeds into everything else.
This has been the hardest part for any agency to handle. A solution architect has to make decisions and tradeoffs based on what they know about the customer. As such, when the architecture suffers, the quality also suffers. We’ve worked with agencies for almost a decade now, and a lot of their technical leads aren’t good enough.
By contrast, Tenup has allowed us to hand off our tasks to them, and the reason we don’t have to get involved very much is that they have a solid technical mind behind them. Kaushal knows how to solve problems properly, so not a lot of issues arise.
Are there any areas they could improve?
We’ve been working with them for over two years now, and there have been areas of improvement along the way. However, we catch them very quickly.
The first one we caught was when Tenup didn’t have a project manager. As a result, we requested them to hire managers, and they hired a fantastic one, so their project management turned great. They didn’t have QA engineers, and that was another bump in the road. We again requested them to hire a QA engineer, and they did, but the first one they hired wasn’t great. After a few weeks, we figured out the problem, and they replaced him with someone else who did a better job.
Overall, as we’ve iterated over a two-year period, I can’t think of anything else that needs improvement at the moment because we iterate on problems so fast as soon as we figure them out.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
I don’t have any advice on working with Tenup specifically because they’re very good. In general, however, it’s good to know what you want to build. If you know what you want, then the team will do a good job.
