What challenge were you trying to address with Ocean View Games?
We needed help rebuilding our Java puzzle game in Unity. Nub was originally written as a standalone Java app for an Android games console and designed around a game controller. We wanted to bring Nub to a wider audience on PC and mobile.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Ocean View Games rebuilt our game in Unity, using the original as a reference for how every mechanic should look, sound, and behave. The original codebase wasn’t a good foundation to carry forward. It was a pure Java application with no structure that mapped onto Unity’s systems, and parts of the code had been lost. Rather than force a port, Ocean View Games rebuilt the game in Unity. David (Lead Engineer) rebuilt the game single-handedly over four months, recreating the levels by hand in Unity’s 2D Tilemap system and redesigning the controls for keyboard, mouse, and touch. The result was playable builds on PC, iOS, and Android from a single Unity project.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The game went from running on one Android games console to three platforms: PC, iOS, and Android, all built from a single Unity project. The full rebuild was done by one engineer in four months, including every level recreated by hand and all the puzzle mechanics reimplemented and checked against the original. We also ended up with a complete, maintainable codebase where before we had a partly lost Java app, and levels that can now be edited visually without touching code. We didn’t track formal metrics for the new builds. The main measure of success for us was that the game ran properly on PC, iOS, and Android and played the same as the original, which we checked side by side against the Java version. The touch controls were the part we were most worried about, and they felt natural on phones and tablets.
How did Ocean View Games perform from a project management standpoint?
The project ran smoothly. David worked on it single-handedly, so there was one point of contact and no handoffs between people. He kept us updated as levels and mechanics came together, and the whole rebuild was delivered in the four months we agreed.
What did you find most impressive about them?
How faithful the remake was. Parts of our original code were gone, so there was nothing to convert. David rebuilt the whole game by playing the original next to Unity and matching every level and puzzle tile by tile. Every mechanic still works exactly as we made it. He also rethought the controls for touchscreens properly instead of putting a virtual gamepad on screen, which is what made it feel like Nub on a phone.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Not really. The only thing I’d say is that a rebuild like this depends heavily on one person, so on a bigger project, I’d want to know who covers if they’re unavailable. That never became a problem for us.
