We partnered with Mobilunity in 2020 to augment our internal development capacity by integrating three dedicated consultants into our Xport team. Mobilunity was responsible for sourcing and employing the consultants under Ukrainian law, while we retained full control over day-to-day project management and technical direction.

The collaboration was structured such that Mobilunity provided a managed staffing service, not deliverables or project outcomes. This meant they handled all administrative and legal responsibilities related to employment, compliance, and payroll, while we focused on getting the right talent embedded in our team.

Mobilunity worked closely with us to define the necessary skill sets, presented vetted profiles, and supported our internal selection process through interviews and technical evaluations. Once consultants were approved, they became fully dedicated to our team, working remotely but integrated into our workflows, tools, and communication routines.

The entire time we had a complete dev team, albeit of different sizes and characteristics. There was frontend development with React, backend development with PHP and MySql, Cypress for automated application testing, as well as manual QA, whose test case management was supported by Testrails.

For some time, we also had support from devops engineers from Mobilunity, which was a separate team made up of internal and external members. They took care of the orchestration of the Docker instances and Gitlab pipelines, as well as assisting with deployment.

Most of the time we had every second week a Scrum review where the increment was presented to the stakeholders, which often was deployed to production some days after the reviews. In both applications we had a MVP after one year. With one of the applications we had 37 feature releases in 26 month.

Mobilunity was commissioned by us to recruit developers, QA, devops according to our skill level and budget specifications. They all became part of an agile scrum team with me as the internal product owner, supported by an internal scrum master from our side. For many team members this way of working together was new, but it worked and we were very successful.

Mobilunity supported us with all other HR tasks such as salary payment, attendance and absences, vacation and sick leave management, training and team building activities on site. This form of collaboration has always worked extremely well.

Mobilunity was very committed from day one to making sure the collaboration was exactly right for us. We were able to discuss all the details with them and there was a very high level of trust in their very professional support. When I was on site in Kyiv, we had our own areas in the office so that we could work together as a team undisturbed. They communicated very transparently on all topics and only sold the services we needed at a very fair price. If you need a reliable partner to build your products or service and you want to manage this yourself with Scrum or something similar I can recomment Mobilunity.

If possible the dev team should work together in the office at least one day per week.

The team Mobilunity assembled for us is broken int two distinct groups. DevOps resources who manage are cloud solutions in coordination with other global team members. This work includes support of our cloud native solutions in Azure, and the support of our Service Orchestration Engine that automates real-time integrations with ETI's service provisioning technology and our Microsoft Power Platform based Service Management Platform. 

The second team is responsible for the development and initial unit testing of new features for the Power Platform based solutions. This requires coordinating with development, customer service, implementation, support, and sales resources in several countries around the world. It requires significant efforts to build, test, and document features for team members and customers where mission critical services are being managed.

Release date milestones, customer acceptance testing, and sales demonstrations that result in winning new business and expanding existing customer relationships. In every possible way, Mobilunity's resources make our journey, to a hosted cloud native SaaS solution provider, possible.

Unlike other nearshoring/offshoring options, the team is under our direct management for all technical project management. Mobilunity effectively handles the HR tasks including recruitment, salary ant time off management, training, and team building activities. I could not be happier with how they support us.

The first day I sat with the team in Kyiv, I felt like we had something special. The team was smart, highly skilled and very eager, but new beginnings are like that. In the last three years I have seen a team of brilliant, loyal, and committed people continue working under incredibly challenging conditions. Every one of my team members in and out of the Ukraine has continued to move the project forward in spite of all the additional stress and distraction. 

I cannot stress enough that I have never seen commitment like this from any previous team I have worked with. Mobilunity has helped us build an international engineering team from recruiting/screening, managing HR admin and back-office work. They were able to capture our needs and provide us with great candidates continuously while also being very flexible to the dynamics of the recruiting process.

The engineers we hired through Mobilunity were very skilled and talented. We were able to form a self-driven engineering team that consisted four Ukrainian engineers in about half a year, which would have taken double or triple time if we had done it in where we are.

We provide art services for customers by curating and organizing exhibitions in offices. We are working to improve the workplace quality by bringing high quality art into business offices. For that, we develop an online platform where artists can register and manage their artwork and profiles.

We were seeking for another software engineer, however hiring in Switzerland was difficult for us and also very expensive. We were then looking for a reliable partner, which could help us find experienced people. Mobilunity helped us to find the right fit for our needs.

What were your goals for this project?

The solution has to fulfil high nees in UX. The proper design and layout is very important. It is also important that we have a high quality code base as we have a lot of functionality divided into several services. We were mostly working with AWS and PHP.

We evaluated various aspects including how far away is the vendor, how much is the price compared to others, what services and help around the remote working they provide (like coaching, mentoring). Especially the open communication and the coaching around remote-working - we had no prior experience - was the decisive factor.

Mobilunity designs and engineers a web-based platform for artists which includes functionality about data management, image upload and processing and analytics and helps deploy that platform to AWS. Mobilunity helps to engineer both backend and frontend parts.

We have a team of 1 remote worker which works as both a backend (primary task) and frontend engineer (secondary task).

We were able to deliver new features faster. We reached our goals earlier and were able to grow faster than expected. This leaded to increased business growth.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We work closely together and communicate daily with the team using Slack and Teams. We share progress in a daily Stand-Up wich proves very effective. Tasks are managed through Jira, as we work with Scrum. Language wasn't an issue, as we experienced the provided people have good knowledge of English.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

We value how close we work together. It almost feels that the workforce is part of our company. We value, that we always have a point of contact which assists in broader questions and not just only billing. We can ask for assistance regarding remote work, agile and others and someone at Mobilunity will be able to help us.

What challenge were you trying to address with Mobilunity?

Our company didn’t have many in-house development options when we were building our MVP, and we needed additional resources to complete it. We were primarily looking for full-stack Javascript engineers and limited our search to senior candidates with strong communication skills. We also needed them to be open to adjusting their schedule to ours, despite a time difference.

We hired a single full-stack engineer from Mobilunity. Our stacks are proprietary, so I can’t provide any specifics on what they were working on. I can say that they worked primarily on the backend of what we were working on.

We only worked with one engineer from Mobilunity, but our whole team consisted of four engineers and two quality assurance (QA) managers.

How did you come to work with Mobilunity?

We did research online and interviewed several firms before going with them. They offered the most qualified candidates for the job and had no problems adjusting to our schedule. Their cost structure was also very reasonable.

We started working together in April 2017 and the engagement ended in March of this year.

We handled project management on our end, but the engineer that Mobilunity provided was one of the more senior members of our team. Their communication was closer to average in terms of performance, but they were entirely remote. We used a combination of Slack, Skype, and Google Drive for file sharing and daily communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

On the business side, their company provides a great service. They communicate clearly and they’re very fair.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We had a few issues with the engineer that they provided, despite their qualifications. However, I liked Mobilunity as a company, and we had a positive experience working with them.

We needed software engineers to augment our team for web development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They've done several projects for us. I don't need a full-time worker who will work on Flash projects because, once it's created, I would only need 10 hours a week to support it. We outsourced the project to Mobilunity, who created an ad manager for our player, and they are still supporting it. We started another project that supports ad and content. We started working with 1 person from Mobilunity, and now we have 4.

How did you come to work with Mobilunity?

I interviewed 6 or 7 companies in Ukraine and Belarus. I chose 2 companies, and they each worked on a different project. I sent product requirements, and Mobilunity was able to understand what I needed and gave me timelines. The timeline was reasonable, and I was able to interview the engineers who would work on the project. It was also important to me that they could find the right people if they didn't have them in the company.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We were able to add 1 product to our product list that allowed us to open some additional doors with the publishers. Their work also allowed us to run smoothly on a number of devices that previously we had issues with. I know our operations and sales teams were glad to have these products in their portfolio.

We did have some problems with communication, but we were able to solve them. We received daily updates by email.

They have a good human resources department. Every time we needed special requirements for developers, they were able to find them. They know the market and have good connections to find people that have specific skills.

Just the communication issue, but when they assigned someone to serve as a connection between their engineers and us, it was solved.

The company is a startup that's building a savings app called Chip In. I'm the founder.

I needed a mobile app built.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The app is a savings app built for iOS and Android using Ionic, AngularJS, and PHP. The app helps the user save for personal savings goals but also save collectively with other users. You can compete with your friends and nudge others to save more money.

How did you come to work with Mobilunity?

I contacted a few firms, and most of them were asking for technical requirements that I didn't know how to write. Mobilunity contacted me on LinkedIn and wrote the technical requirements for me. They allowed me to use that to contact other firms, but they were the most responsive, so I decided to continue to work with them. They also happened to be the cheapest firm.

How much have you invested with Mobilunity?

The cost of the app was between $10,000 and $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

I began working with them in April 2016, and the work is ongoing.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The product was launched in November 2016. I'm still in the process of collecting feedback. Based on the concept, I was accepted into an incubator that's sponsored by the Chilean government. We still need to improve the user experience. I've applied to another program through Puerto Rico, and I'm still waiting to hear from them. I received interesting feedback about the app from England. There were some companies who felt there would be banks interested in buying an API [application programming interface] based on the app. That will be the next step for 2017, and I'll continue to work with Mobilunity for that project.

How did Mobilunity perform from a project management standpoint?

I was happy with them. I recommended them to most of my friends who were looking for developers. Mobilunity was responsive when there were problems. They're also pleasant people to work with. I wasn't happy with the design in the beginning. and I felt like the person I was working with wasn't doing the best they could, so they actually hired someone new for that project. After that change, everything went very smoothly.

We were using a payment provider called MANGOPAY, and there was quite a bit of work to use their API. I believe that part could have been done better.
