We’re an online food retailer in the UK. The company was established in 2009, and we started the online business in 2012. We moved from sole trader to a limited company in 2015.  I’m the founder and senior operations manager of the company. I’m also in charge of the web development part.

What challenge were you trying to address with Magefan?

I had hired a US company but the service wasn’t very good. I had just done an upgrade to Magento 2 and was seeking an advisor for that.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Magefan is providing us quite a broad service range, including website development and hosting management. They’ve created bespoke extensions and handle debugging. We’ve got some third-party integrations that generate quite a lot of bugs. Magefan fixes bugs quickly and efficiently. They also installed and customized our servers.

They handle marketing, not just development, and come up with ideas for the website. Their team has also taken on our SEO and Google advertising. We were doing it in-house, but the feedback wasn’t that good. They give us daily reports.

What is the team composition?

We’re working with four people from Magefan at the moment. We were working only with Ihor (CEO) initially.

How did you come to work with Magefan?

We were using Magefan’s blog extension. I clicked on one of their ads randomly and saw on their site that they offered bespoke customization and website maintenance. I also found out that they were a subcontractor of our previous vendor. I gave them a trial project and was really happy with their service. The price was quite decent.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around £5,000 (approximately $7,000 USD) in the first year. Now, we’re paying £4,000–£5,000 (approximately $5,500–$7,000 USD) per quarter. We’ve started digital advertising, so we’ll be spending more in 2021.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Magefan around June 2017, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Ihor is a smart person, and he always brings ideas I hadn’t come across. He’s helped us a lot on the marketing part. We were using MailChimp by ourselves before and were spending a lot of money on it. Ihor got us to use Mautic, which is open-source and has saved us at least £5,000 (approximately $7,000 USD) per year.

Also, we were using Google Workspace for email. Our business expanded quite a lot, and we were going way beyond the daily limit of Workspace so our emails always got bounced back. Ihor found Mailgun, which is a much cheaper solution. It’s really stable, and we haven’t had issues with it.

Before, we were only getting 30 orders per day, and we’re getting 200 now. The average order was around £30 (approximately $40 USD), and the figure is increasing. I’m really glad I have Magefan working for me.

How did Magefan perform from a project management standpoint?

I give them task lists on a monthly basis. I get ideas from my marketing and operations teams, based on which I then make lists, and Magefan follows the tasks one by one. I’m using Google Docs for that and don’t have a project management tool in place. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Magefan is available to me seven days a week. With other providers I’ve used, I always had trouble getting ahold of them. Our business runs 24/7. If a server breaks, I can just call Magefan, and they’ll fix it within a few hours.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there isn’t much to improve at the moment. We’re happy with each other.

I’ve referred Magefan to friends in the industry, and they’re all happy with the service.

Magefan is well versed in Magento platform and development. Ihor is especially very knowledgeable with Magento. We were able to develop custom extensions on our site which is now a big part of our community in bringing users together and discuss openly on our site.

We mainly used Trello and Bitbucket to communicate. And it was very simple to deal with Magefan. Timelines are usually on point and if not, they would communicate and let you know.

Magefan and Ihor are honest and trustworthy. They would be honest and upfront about how long a project would take, and at times deduct the hours they actually spent on it because it provided a learning experience for themselves. They are also proactive when they find some issues with our site, even if it's not related to the project at hand.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We have worked together since 2018 and Magefan still handles basically all our Magento needs. We are still very satisfied with their work and don't see any improvement needed.

We’ve reduced the localization timeline by over 80%. What used to take a team of translators weeks to manually input into Magento now happens in a matter of hours through bulk AI processing. We’ve gone from “planning a launch” to “going live” in a fraction of the time.Second, manual translation services are expensive, especially for a large catalog with thousands of SKUs and blog posts. The service provider responded on May 30th, 2022. 

According to our License Agreement (https://magefan.com/end-user-license-agreement ) which is based on the same terms as other Magento 2 extensions vendors' licenses, one License gives you the right to use only one copy of the Software on one LIVE Magento installation. A separate License should be purchased for each LIVE Magento installation. You can use the software on an unlimited number of developments, staging, and test Magento Installations.

Each customer agrees to the terms of the license agreement while placing an order and can find it in the LEGAL section at the footer of every page on our website.

Matt bought two of our modules in summer 2021. So, he agreed to and should have read our Lisence Agreement terms correspondingly. After the purchase, he installed them on a test domain and since our system recognized this domain as a live installation he contacted us about this problem. We asked for the name of the live domain and added 3 domains Matt specified, presumably for A&B testing. We kindly added them to the license key and Matt was completely satisfied.

A few days ago he asked us to add 3 more domains to the license key. They happened to be live domains, three different stores completely unrelated to the previous project. So we asked Matt to purchase 3 additional licenses, so that he could use the modules on these new websites as per our License Agreement. This answer apparently didn't satisfy Matt, and, unfortunately, we received threats in return.

We are really sorry about this situation, and we will put more effort into informing our customers about the terms of use of our extensions. However, we also want to highlight that no information was hidden from Matt and he agreed to the terms of use at checkout willingly.
