We found BetterQA through a reference from their previous customer. Team's availability, collaborative approach, expertise in exploratory testing, great documentation and reporting capabilities were the deciding factors for us.

ContextQA was at an early stage when we started working with BetterQA. We provided user scenarios, high-level documentation, and product videos. The team went through all screens and features and provided a detailed analysis of all issues and performance issues with recordings. They were available to discuss all points over the call as well.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Based on feedback provided by BetterQA, we fixed UI issues, improved UX, created better documentation and videos explaining the product, and improved the performance of the product.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

BetterQA team members were on-time for delivering work. We had to make an important release by end of the year 2022 and BetterQA team members were able to complete testing and provide report to us.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Clear communication and a collaborative approach stood out well while working with BetterQA. It seemed like they are owning a product and provided very constructive feedback.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

I hope they also get into other types of testing such as load testing and web app security testing.

I'm the Director of QA for Owlet Inc. We make IoT wellness and medical devices for infants and children. My team of nearly 20 people tests the entire software pipeline for our wellness & medical devices. Our test team is remote, spread across North America, and supports a large multi-disciplinary engineering team.

We reached out to Better QA to help support testing of our mobile applications in the EU region, where we have a data center and backend that is separate from our North American region. We needed support in the local markets as our products rolled out across Europe, and additional support with localized i18n languages.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We needed a vendor located in the EU with experience in IoT devices, mobile application testing, and who could be a little flexible on the hours (to at least attend some meetings with the NA team). Cost was also a factor. We reached out to a number of firms through Clutch, and I felt like I had the most rapport with Better QA.

Their team was initially only supposed to work on localization of languages and ensuring that data passing through our EU data centers was working properly. However, it became clear that they were capable of so much more than that, and they took on much more responsibility working alongside the teams in North America.

We worked with 2 manual testers supporting our mobile apps, firmware, and hardware device testing. They reported to the manager of our manual test team.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The team from Better QA were really really good testers, both of them took on way more responsibility than initially projected, and made major contributions to the overall test efforts supported by the NA team. They worked with relative autonomy, managed their efforts well, and reported excellent bugs to the software team.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

When dealing with teams in different timezones, it can be tricky to manage that effectively, but the team from Better QA was a pleasure to work with on every level. They never missed any deadlines, and always delivered extremely high quality work. The NA team will miss working with them, and their extreme work ethic.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

For the price, they really can't be beat. Out of all the companies I spoke with in the EU, I really liked their startup vibes and the guys that we were worked with were very skilled. Plus they're located in Romania (Transylvania), so it's possible they've got some vampire blood in their veins! Maybe that's why they were so awesome to work with ;)

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

No idea how they could have done a better job for us, my biggest complaint was that we had to stop working together for budget reasons. Had we not faced budget reductions, the partnership would have surely continued indefinitely.

In the end we finished our project with the best quality thanks to Better QA. The techologies used were: React, Kubernetes, Docker.

Even though we work in highly complex infrastructure and stakehodler ecosystems, the external colleagues from Better QA had no problems fitting right in and finding a good orientation.

Thus, their projects are running in time and budget and we develop together new best practices for handling complex situations.

The colleagues from Better QA seamlessly integrated within our ecosystem. We're using an own framework and following the concept of minimum business increments in one of the projects. In the other ones we are follwoing SCRUM.

In 2016, we developed an online whiteboard. Recently, we redesigned the UI and relaunch the product. As we began development, we brought on BetterQA to test the frontend.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They helped us test our online whiteboard app. It’s a real-time collaboration whiteboard where people can connect from all over the world to the same board and work together. Their goal was to provide a solution with fewer bugs.

They test the developers’ work and track the bugs on different platforms and browsers. Then they report them on our Azure DevOps system using videos and explanations.

They’ve done a great job, and now the product is rolling. They’ve been able to look into the code and give our developers advanced feedback.

How did BetterQA perform from a project management standpoint?

We use Azure DevOps for project management and bug tracking. Communication is mostly done via Microsoft Teams.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They are very professional and know what they’re doing. They have a holistic testing approach and are good at finding bugs. On top of that, they are very polite. They’ve become a part of our team.

They do not have any areas to improve. If they continue as they are, they will be a successful company and get a lot more customers.

It speeds their process up if you have a tracking system in place. You should prepare a clear test scenario and tell them the main use cases and where the focus should be.

What were your goals for this project?

The goal with systems design is to comprise the following items.

• Allow practitioners (=service provider) to create a business account for a single or multiple practitioners and then manager that account to add/remove practitioners from a single source as needed
• Allow practitioners a method to enter their availability into the system by way of a calendar so that users can see their availability to book an appointment
• Provide for a method that users can pay for services and practitioners can be paid for their services rendered while taking our cut of the service fee simultaneously
• Practitioners will need a method to receive their payments in a timely manner, no more than same week so this element needs some input from the industry side.
• Allow for manual or geolocation systems to help select current or future physical locations
• Integrate a rating system into the app for practitioners
• Display business details of the practitioners for users making selections
• Provide our calendar as an integrated component in the entire system

BetterQA seemed to have a good understanding of our needs and presented ideas on how to tackle the project which convinced us.

We worked together on a text messaging and VoIP mobile solution which is being used in healthcare. They provided system testing of the entire product, wrote manual and automated test cases and also reviewed the requirements of the product.

What was the team composition?

We worked with for people software testers. There’s one person who is available to review any work anyone is doing.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We’re very happy with the all the critical bugs they have found on our system. Their quote was very competitive—we were told by their competitors that paying a cheap price would mean having to pay twice. We were expecting the worst, but we got the best.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

They were super responsive to any of our questions or requests. They were always very transparent when it came to the timeline and we had no delays from their side. Any problems were because we added things and had more iterations. When we signed the contract, we set up sprints.

Each sprint corresponded to a key area and we had a very clear checklist that we went through. There were on time when testing on all of those milestones. Having the checklist was very helpful because it gave us an objective way of judging whether or not goals were achieved.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I really appreciated that they took initiative with the project. They really understood what we wanted our project to do, and came up with suggestions for new features as well. They also told us exactly what was achievable and the deadlines. It was very transparent and honest, which is something I really appreciated.

Are there any areas for improvement?

I would have liked them to pursue further their suggestions to the product owner, as some of the decisions made by the owner were not on par with the general guidelines but they didn't want to override the decisions taken so we had to argue on these decisions ourselves.

For a couple years, we played with the idea of developing our own product, and we finally kick-started the project in the early months of 2020. Being a relatively small company, we never had dedicated QA and because of the worldwide health and economic situation, we weren't in any position to hire new people. We wanted to address this shortcoming early on, by collaborating with outside QA profesionalls.

The project had to cater to the business requirements of the Logistics sector, uniting a tailored ERP with eCommerce/auction-house style services. It had to be web based encompassing several applications into one responsive UI, with separate views for clients with different economic activities. The application is written in python with JS-based frontend and UI.

We started looking for QA freelancers initially remote, on the usual freelancing websites, but the main hurdle we encountered was that our project was too early in development (actually only in design phase) for remote QA work. We then changed our requirements to QA consulting and shifted our search towards companies that are more local. We finally found BetterQA through our professional circle. We got convinced by their expertise on the matter, their openness to work with us to continuously define and improve the testing requirements, the location and price.

BetterQA was responsible for the QA part of the project. Specifically, they were initially tasked with consulting us on the different QA aspects that needed to be taken into consideration. We provided them with access to our project, the materials that we had so far (initial documentation, presentation, mock-up, demo) and we started working together on designing a QA system to support the ongoing development of the project. After the design phase is finished, they will continue with specific QA services like different kinds of testing features (unit, integration, black-box, stress-testing, etc.).

What was the team composition?

The team was formed by two people from their side. A senior QA consultant with which we worked on designing the test system and guided us all the way, this person being involved more at the start of the project, with less involvement afterwards. The second resource was a QA engineer tasked with implementing the test system.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

This approach allowed us to bring experienced QA resources in our team, in a manageable way, regarding cost and time investment. The most important impact it brought was the consultancy and guidance in designing this feature, despite the very early stages of the project. It also allowed us to tackle the problem of quality and testing early on.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

The kick-start of the collaboration has been slow initially, mostly because of the lock-down, everyone having to work from home, and because the project being in its early stages, many things could potentially change. As a solution, we increased the communication with the team members, even several times a day, and concentrated heavily on video meetings, through Skype, Zoom, but also chat via Slack.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

What we appreciated most about them was their openness to contribute to the direction of the project. They weren't hampered by the lack of materials or documentation, and they were proactive in defining with us the goals and tasks of this module.

Are there any areas for improvement?

The only thing I would have improved in our collaboration so far is out of their or our control, i.e. to work with them in person as well. I would love, after the lock-down restrictions are lifted, to be able to work with them under the same roof, for a while, to further strengthen our collaboration, especially since we are both in Cluj-Napoca, and get along well.
