BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I own a small dental practice. I have an associate dentist that works with me two days a week.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Renaissance Marketing Agency and SEO Firm?
A couple of years ago, I started working with an older dentist who was hoping to transition his practice. He wanted to work together first. After about a year, we planned for the business to fall back to me, and then he would continue to work with me for a little while. He had always practiced by himself and had a good patient base, but it was just one dentist.
I came on hoping to work four days a week or have a good schedule to stay busy, but it was pretty light. He’d introduce me to his patients, but we didn’t have many to see. There was a lot of twiddling our thumbs between the two of us, so we decided to spruce up the website and do some SEO. However, the effort was pretty futile, and we didn’t get a lot of calls. After that, I knew I needed to reach out to a marketing group or someone who knew how to improve SEO so people could find us online.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Renaissance Marketing Agency and SEO Firm (Renaissance) works on our SEO to organically improve our ranking in Google. When we need a boost, patients are absent for some reason, or we have to fill some time, they’ll put up a Google Ads campaign. I try to manage that myself as well, but I don’t have as much success as they do. Their goal is to keep me busy, and I’ve been busy.
We talk a lot about finding keywords, and we try to put them away and use different ones. We also try to optimize which keywords are going to give us the type of patients that we want to see. We’ve tried different things, and it has been fun to watch how patients are drawn to a specific keyword — we target it and they start calling.
Maybe 2–3 times a year, I have to call them to look at the numbers because we’re dropping off. They can look at different things and figure out what’s going on. Then, they’ll come up with a detailed analysis and suggestions to draw more patients in.
What is the team composition?
I only work with Eric (Owner). I believe he has a partner who I haven’t met. I also think there’s someone who writes some content, like our blog posts, but I don’t know who does that.
How did you come to work with Renaissance Marketing Agency and SEO Firm?
When I started looking for an agency, I talked to a couple of dental groups that specifically provide those services to dentists, and they had a pretty expensive startup fee. At that time, I was just an employee and I wasn’t that busy, so I wasn’t making a lot of money. The older doctor that I worked with wasn’t inclined to pay for advertising or marketing, so I started looking for someone local that wasn’t dental-specific.
I found Renaissance through a Google search. Eric came down to meet me in person to talk about his strategy. I liked that he was willing to tailor his services to what I needed and nothing more than that. I spoke with him about his expectations for our results, and he was open about what his fees would be. He explained what effect I would've had if I'd paid for more keywords or had a Google Ads budget.
I trusted him enough to just go ahead and commit for three months. In marketing and SEO, that’s a pretty short period of time, but I decided to try it for three months, track my ROI, and then make a final decision.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent approximately $40,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We began our partnership in October 2018, and it’s ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
For the first year and a half, I tracked my ROI by keeping a Google spreadsheet where I asked patients how they'd found us and if I felt that it was related to one of the keywords we had promoted, a Google Ad, something like that. Then I took note of that person and how much they were spending in treatments. It became a lot of work, and I didn’t have time to do that, so I stopped recording it.
When I was an associate, I was paying around $1,500 a month; I felt that I was giving away a lot of money. However, when I added up the money that the patients brought in, it was sometimes 10 or 20 times more. One patient could easily give me 10 times the $1,500 if they needed a lot of treatments. It became clear that the ROI was there, so I just kept going, and the results have gotten better year after year.
Now, I keep tabs just by noticing how my schedule is packed. If it’s standing out a little bit, I’ll just talk to my receptionist and ask her if we're getting calls from new patients. I think that if I followed all of their advice, there would be more metrics.
How did Renaissance Marketing Agency and SEO Firm perform from a project management standpoint?
Eric gives me a monthly update through email. We text sometimes if I need a quick answer, but we mostly communicate to go over our strategy through phone calls. Every other month, it’s helpful to get lunch together. Just as my business changes, I try to make sure that the services Renaissance provides are helping to get us where we need to go.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I’ve read about SEO and on paper, it seems easy to line up all of your business information and try to write good content on your website. I had spent a lot of time trying to do my own SEO and it didn’t work, so the most impressive thing to me is that whatever Renaissance does, it just works. It makes us come up and rank high on Google. I don’t need Eric to tell me how to do it — that’s his job — but I’m impressed by how well it works.
Also, during COVID-19, dental practices had to shut down and couldn’t do any services unless they were emergencies, so I called Eric and told him that I had to shut down because I didn’t have any income. He explained that you can lose ground if you stop with SEO, and I understood but I still had to tell him to stop. He was fine with that, and as soon as we were allowed to open again, we went back when I wanted to. He didn’t pressure me, and I like companies that don’t give you a hard time when you’re trying to get out of their service. They didn’t, and that was very cool.
As far as the services they’re providing, I feel that they’re nice and customized. I think I got a better value going on with Renaissance than I would’ve if I had gone with one of those dental-specific groups.
Are there any areas they could improve?
If I had one complaint, it would be that sometimes the blog posts aren’t great, and I’ll just review or send them back so they’ll put more work in and make them better. However, I really think that the only way I would be happy with a blog post is if a dentist wrote it, and I don’t want them to pay a dentist to write it.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Go for Renaissance if you’re pretty hands-on with your business and are determined to get great value. It’s a little bit hard to trust any marketing group at first, so just give yourself a period of time in which you’re willing to invest in those services and then reevaluate. If you do that, you’ll be able to see pretty easily whether or not it’s working, and then you can go from there.
