Powercode handles a variety of projects for us. Some of the projects are just copying the content from an existing website and putting it up on a hosting interface that is accessible to the client. But there are also larger projects when Powercode builds WordPress websites and custom websites for our clients. We usually provide them with the scope of work and the content that includes graphic design, the copy, the structure, and the aesthetics. On the backend, they use a combination of proprietary software and their own systems.

The team has stayed within the deadlines, but some small deadlines have occurred however it has been communicated early enough. The other team members where able to catch up the delay. We have communicate through email, phone, WhatsApp and Skype. We didn’t experience any language barriers since our project manager was able to communicated in the language required.

What challenge were you trying to address with PowerCode?
We hired PowerCode to develop an advanced prototype of our product to test with clients. We did not have the resources or the time to do it ourselves.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
We had a simple prototype that we had coded ourselves, but we realized we needed something more substantial. We provided the design and mock-ups for PowerCode to work with. The code they supplied was more mature than what we initially worked with. We requested that they work with React Native because it was the very first version of the product. We didn’t want to invest a lot of effort on a native application before we could prove that this was something our customers would value.
The application serves as a chat platform for employees in Europe who don’t work in front of a computer. We relied on PowerCode to implement an instant messaging feature that allows colleagues to always be connected. In addition to the iOS and Android apps, PowerCode added a web-based version. The platform is GDPR-compliant and encrypts messaging to keep personal data and conversations secure.
What is the team composition?
In addition to a project manager, we worked with two React Native developers, one backend web developer, one frontend web developer, and a QA tester.
How did you come to work with PowerCode?
PowerCode and other vendors sent proposals in response to my posting of the job in an online marketplace. We had a poor experience with the first company we selected, but PowerCode was our second choice and has worked well so far.
How much have you invested in them?
We spent around €35,000 (approximately $40,000 USD).
What is the status of this engagement?
We worked on this project from August–October 2018. PowerCode is currently fixing some bugs and adding small enhancements based on our early customer feedback.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
This platform is our core product. Because of PowerCode, we have something to sell right now. We’ve received positive feedback from our customers to so far, but they understand we are still in the early stages and plan to scale.
From our perspective, the code quality is sufficient. We sometimes find bugs during our user acceptance testing, but those are somewhat common problems. Overall, we’re very happy.
How did PowerCode perform from a project management standpoint?
Because PowerCode had access to our existing documentation and our earlier prototype, there was not a lot of miscommunication. The development went remarkably smoothly. Their project manager was reliable in keeping everything organized. He was always available on Skype, even on nights and weekends.
Our project was delayed because of our misguided time with the first vendor, but our original timeline remained the same. We placed pressure on PowerCode to deliver according to that plan, and they handled that challenge really well by hitting most of the deadlines.
What did you find most impressive about them?
We valued their talents working with React Native and keeping the project organized. The project manager was professional and always on the lookout for improvements.
Are there any areas they could improve?
They are not as experienced when it comes to setting up servers on Amazon and hosting other services in the cloud. They took an old-fashioned approach to the Amazon hosting, and we determined that we could handle that responsibility ourselves.

PowerCode accelerated our development services. Their team met aggressive deadlines, delivering quality service. They brought work to production exceptionally quickly.
We had specific style guidelines around the stack we use, and it took time to train everyone, but everything was terrific after that. The team member we’re working with now is extremely independent and has the same permissions as our employees.
How did PowerCode perform from a project management standpoint?
We frequently talk with one of their founders, and he’s responsive at all times of day and night. We have regular meetings with our assigned engineer four times a week, with a standup every other day, and a team meeting. He’s extremely communicative.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their work ethic and responsibility are superior to other agencies we’ve worked with. One time, a customer called having issues with an app, and the engineer stayed up late resolving the problem, despite being in a different time zone. With past partnerships, they didn’t have the same sense of accountability to our clients. PowerCode works extremely hard on projects and remains flexible.

It’s not a deal breaker, but a few more options for billing and payment would be helpful.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
We’re in a unique position, having a product manager, designer, and engineers in-house. Many clients wouldn’t necessarily have those. From that perspective, it’s crucial to think beyond engineering, and about how PowerCode delivers expertise on product and design.

What challenge were you trying to address with PowerCode?
We needed a development firm to build our product for iOS and Android.

What was the scope of their involvement?
PowerCode developed our app for both iOS and Android. A notable feature is the messaging system where users can share files and communicate with each other. There’s also an integrated payment solution and a rating system for notes that are bought and sold. Users are encouraged to rate each other after each completed transaction. The UX combines elements seen in large platforms like eBay, Facebook, and Uber.
They also developed a landing page that describes the functions of the app and directs visitors to the relevant digital distribution platforms. Lastly, PowerCode created an administration panel that enables me to see all the in-app activity. The platform went live in May 2018 and they’ve since built a function that allows users to preview notes before opening them.
What is the team composition?
I initially spoke with their sales manager, but a project manager took the lead in our day-to-day interactions once development began.
How did you come to work with PowerCode?
I found them on LinkedIn and reached out to their sales manager. We had a productive conversation. They sounded reasonable and came up with good solutions regarding the platform’s payment functionality. Hiring them was an easy decision.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent about $80,000 in total.
What is the status of this engagement?
The majority of PowerCode’s work took place from September 2017–July 2018. They provide maintenance and support as needed.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Since its recent launch, the app has attracted around 100 active users. The app functions smoothly on both platforms and people are happy with the fast user interface. PowerCode created features that work well together and the app is relatively bug-free.
How did PowerCode perform from a project management standpoint?
We spoke on a daily basis via Skype. Their project manager is a talented, professional, and experienced person who can reliably overcome development challenges.
What did you find most impressive about them?
From what I’ve heard from other partners and colleagues, PowerCode has competitive pricing. Their code quality is exceptional as well. I rarely found bugs in the deliverables they submitted for preview. Their work required little revision from us and was nearly ready for release upon completion.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No. I’m happy PowerCode and plan on having them add more functionalities to the app.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
Clients should describe exactly what they want from their product. The more detailed they are in their expectations, the smoother the process will go.

We worked with their project manager, who was a good communicator with a good understanding of English. We also worked with multiple front- and backend developers, depending on our needs.

They left the project, which put us in a very difficult situation. The project is still not finalized.
How was project management arranged and how effective was it?
We received daily reporting from our product manager. However, communication broke down across several areas at the end. The code they delivered did not pass QA tests, while they neglected to inform us on serious issues until very recently. They terminated the engagement after problems began to arise.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
Initially, they quickly got up to speed for the project and were willing to deploy whatever resources were necessary.
Are there any areas where they can improve?
They failed to raise concerns and problems in real time and often delayed on creating tickets/updating Jira to reflect current project status. The team needs to help clients think through their product specs and more extensively test their code prior to delivery. They should also fully commit to the projects they agree to take on.
