We engaged NerdzLab to help us develop an iOS mobile app.

What was the scope of their involvement?

NerdzLab developed a productivity app for iOS, using existing designs. They incorporated features that allow for calendar synchronization and a CRM that imports spreadsheets, plots data on a map, and helps users track leads. Users can also sort contacts, communicate in groups, and monitor analytics. Sales representatives, for example, can use the app to track their performance after holding events, based on sales or customer satisfaction ratings.

I work directly with the founder, as well a couple other developers.

How did you come to work with NerdzLab?

I found them through Upwork.

How much have you invested with them?

The project came out to about $25,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in December 2017, and the relationship is ongoing. Most of the programming work is completed, but we're in the process of cleaning up a few things before launching.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

NerdzLab developed a complicated app in a relatively short amount of time. The feedback we've received from initial testing has been very positive thus far. 

How did NerdzLab perform from a project management standpoint?

They perform well and respond very quickly whenever we reach out to them for changes or questions. They delivered on time and make themselves almost immediately available to fix any bugs as they come up. We mostly track milestones through a single document, and keep in touch through Skype and chat.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their team went above and beyond expectations. In addition to being good programmers, they're also patient and responsive to client needs. They've displayed exemplary performance in comparison to other developers I've worked with. They performed tasks that were inconvenient and beyond the scope of work, going out of their way for us. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. I'm very satisfied with the work they've provided.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a strong and clear sense of what the app should look like and do going into the relationship, providing detailed requirements and wireframes if possible.

I'm an entrepreneur. My company, Groggy, designed an app that monitors people while they're driving to make sure that they stay awake.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with NerdzLab?

My challenge was finding a team that had experience with facial recognition or, particularly, eye tracking.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They built the iPhone app from my designs. They helped when I needed a specific resolution for some designs so I didn’t have to find a graphic designer. I did the user testing and provided feedback to them on the changes I needed. They also provided advice on what they thought would work well to get it into the app store. We should release it within the next week. depending on the user uptake, we will build an Android app and also for Apple Watch. Once we launch and I get client feedback, I’ll have them do a second version with adjustments.

The app uses space detection to track eye blinks, yawns, and head movements as well as the length of time the eyelids are closed. If the algorithm notes that responses are over the average, it alerts you that you’re showing signs of drowsiness. One of the key features is that it counts eye blinks. One of the challenges was doing that accurately depending on the length of the phone away from your face at which it could still detect the blinks. Another challenge was detecting yawns because the mouth can stay open for a laugh or smile. They had to work a little bit harder to get the algorithms to count a yawn versus a smile.

What is the team composition?

I worked with two people but the main one was the first point of contact that I dealt with. He would update his team on what needed to be done. It was good for me to deal with the same person throughout.

How did you come to work with NerdzLab?

I found them on Upwork. I listed my project and had a number of responses. When I started asking questions about my project, trying to determine the respondents’ knowledge of what I was trying to do, NerdzLab was by far the most experienced. They had done some work on eye tracking before. They had a past project that they could show me as a demonstration. I knew that they would be able to more easily understand what I was trying to achieve. Working across international time zones, you have to try to be clear via Skype or by sending documents back and forth. Having someone that already understood 50% would make it easier for them to understand what I was trying to achieve going forward.

How much have you invested with them?

The total cost was about $24,000 AUD ($18,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together last August 2017. The work is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s a bit early to say since I don’t have feedback beyond simple user testing. But so far there have been many times when I needed to make changes based on user feedback and they successfully made those changes.

The quality is really good. If I wasn't getting quality work, I wouldn't have stayed with them. The interactions with them have also been really good. They’ve been clear about what was possible and not possible. If they weren’t sure, they would do their own research and come back to me with an answer.

How did NerdzLab perform from a project management standpoint?

We used the Upwork interface for sharing documents and doing payments. That interface also has a Skype-type service we used. They performed strongly given the international time zones that we had to deal with as well as the language differences since English is their second language.

Another strength of theirs was being strategic about what was happening in order to move things forward. They kept things going throughout the process. They would ask for a proposal and come back with the costing for the specifications.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I was most impressed with their desire to reach an outcome that I was happy with. They didn’t just settle for “good enough”. For example, once when I sent an example of the graphic design I wanted, they wouldn’t use it because it wasn’t my design. It was good to have pushback on issues of integrity. That’s happened a couple of times. That was the most impressive thing. They weren’t happy to take money over making sure they were doing the right thing.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could have a little bit more structure around their written processes and their written formats. For example, I have a good bit of design and technical understanding but I could see that, for someone without that background or skill, it would be harder for them to follow things. They could improve their ability to deal with a layperson as well as someone that's technical.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be very clear on what you want. Document the way that you want things to roll out. Bring them on board with why you are doing it, the goal you're trying to reach, and the end game.

We wanted to create a CRM app that gave personal trainers and gyms the tools needed to maximize their time, revenue, and client experience. The app would simplify client and business management.

SOLUTION

We conducted a rigorous interview process to vet many potential candidates before choosing them.

They built the iOS app, satisfying all of our functionality specs. The app features automated business operations, in-depth performance analytics, and tracking capabilities to monitor client progress. Currently, NerdzLab is developing and adding additional features.

We’re working with a web developer, a QA engineer, and two iOS developers.

We successfully launched our app on the AppStore.

They’ve communicated effectively, meeting biweekly to identify project tasks and update timelines. They respond quickly and maintain an efficient workflow.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

We appreciate their responsiveness to our concerns. Even when the app faced minor bugs, they worked quickly to resolve the issues.

I have no complaints nor concerns.

We wanted to make our solution’s payment process easy and comfortable for users.

We were looking for an expert iOS consultant. The CEO of NerdzLab answered our proposal, and we like the company’s portfolio, reviews, and comprehensive cover letter. After a short call to confirm their qualifications and experience, we started working with NerdzLab. Our cooperation is ongoing.

Describe the project in detail.

SwayPay is a free mobile payment app that makes checkout faster, safer, and more rewarding. Users can shop anywhere online using any device and send payments via the SwayPay app. The app offers other benefits as well, such as a cashback policy and instant discounts in the form of exclusive coupons that are automatically applied just before payment. As an added measure of security, users confirm payments by fingerprint.

We work with one iOS developer from NerdzLab.

Our app has launched successfully on the App Store.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We cooperate well together. Every part of the app was made professionally, and we received a stable product that we’re proud to offer to customers.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They’re highly skilled in programming. The whole team is passionate, determined, and responsible. NerdzLab delivers complicated functionality in a short timeframe with no bugs. Additionally, they’re highly client-oriented and cultivate a friendly environment that made us feel comfortable.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Honestly, I didn't notice any disadvantages or imperfections. I think NerdzLab is doing their best.

I co-founded a company that develops mobile applications and websites.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with NerdzLab?

We needed assistance in developing bandwidth for an iOS app. We have an in-house design team, but due to the project’s tight timeline, we needed to outsource to a larger firm with multiple developers and a Quality Assurance (QA) team.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They handled the front-end development of the application using Swift code. Most notably, they built a custom video player that’s more advanced than the default iOS video player. Their QA engineer and two developers managed to build the video player and stabilize it in a reasonable amount of time. 

Initially, we managed our partnership using Scrum, with weekly Sprints. We then decided to use the Waterfall Model to manage their development so we could accommodate our beta testing. We’d give them our design specifications, they would develop it over a set timeline, and then we’d test it. Though the switch proved difficult, they were very flexible and adapted quickly.

What is the team composition? 

I worked with Vasyl Khmil [Co-founder, NerdzLab] and Volodymyr Vrublevskyi [iOS Developer, NerdzLab], as well as their team of developers and QA engineer.

How did you come to work with NerdzLab?

They came highly recommended by a business partner. They had a good reputation, and we were confident they could do the job.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested approximately $30,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began our partnership in August and we’re currently in the final stages of development.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We were so impressed with how they handled this project that we’ve asked them to assist us in building our own application.

How did NerdzLab perform from a project management standpoint?

They had good attention to detail, and if they ever missed anything, they were responsible enough to catch it and correct it. We communicated primarily through Skype, a messaging service called Telegram, and the project tracking software Jira.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I found their availability despite our time difference to be the most impressive. I’m on Pacific Standard Time and they accommodate that despite being offshore. We’re able to have a couple conference calls every week with our entire team, and I’m able to get ahold of them throughout the work day.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would’ve been helpful to have a status report of any issues they run into, as opposed to going back and forth about it via chat. That would be more efficient and help us anticipate any delays.

We found them through another marketplace platform. After having many calls with different development agencies, we chose NERDZ LAB because their founder was self-made and understood our startup’s approach. With his knowledge and team, he perfectly aligned with what we needed in that phase.

We worked together from July–September 2025.

NERDZ LAB delivered a good and functional build. We’ve had little crash reports, but we’re yet to test it with more users.

They were very fast and delivered the entire project within two months. We primarily used Slack for communication.

1. Created designs for the web app in Figma. The first stage involved working with a NerdzLab designer to translate the concept into a full layout of web and mobile-responsive screens. We worked in close collaboration to iteratively build out and refine the features and user journey, as she provided consultation on styles and enhancing user experience. 
2. Developed the web app. When designs were ready, the designer joined the development team and they built the app on the dev site and conducted thorough quality assurance testing. I was able to test the app as development progressed, and they were remarkably patient with accommodating my numerous change requests. Development was completed and the app moved to production.

Their project management was phenomenal and well structured. We had weekly progress meetings, ongoing communication on Slack, and a progress tracking system for coordination system and visibility. They were highly responsive to questions and needs that arose, and extremely efficient with everything from providing estimates to implementing change requests.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

As others have noted, working with NERDZ LAB genuinely feels like a partnership with an in-house team. I was engaged in the process throughout, and received expert consultation and recommendations that significantly improved the design. They were kind and patient with explaining technical aspects I didn't undertand, and generously accommodated my preferred work and communication styles. They used creative problem solving, excellent communication, and they ultimately developed a high quality product that far exceeded my expectations. And they are a joy to work with.

Are there any areas for improvement or something NERDZ LAB could have done differently?

I am more than satisfied with my experience. The team provided exceptional quality in both their product and customer service, and I have no areas of improvement to note.
