I’m the director of marketing at Lochwood-Lozier Custom Homes, a custom home-building firm. We do everything from land feasibility and discovery to building the homes, interior and landscape design, and maintenance.

What challenge were you trying to address with Motive?

We needed to do a bit of rebranding, specifically focusing on our website. We haven’t updated our website since the 1990s.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Motive has helped us completely revamp our website. This involves redesigning the platform, adding new photos, creating new copy and pages, and conceptualizing new ideas. They’ve developed everything from scratch and currently handle maintenance. Our site is hosted on WordPress and Bluehost.

Their team also helps us with our SEO, brand messaging, and Google Ads. For the SEO part, we’ve provided them with some keywords we want to target, and they’ve helped fill the gaps we're missing to point us toward our target audience.

We work with around five people from their team, including Daniel and Rebekah, our main contact points.

I was onboarded around the same time we hired them. When I was brought on, we were looking at three different companies, and we met with each one. We decided to go with Motive based on their expertise and customer service. Overall, they were the best choice by far.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Not only do we love the new website design, but we’re constantly receiving tons of positive feedback from potential, existing, and past clients. They say the site looks professional, comprehensive, informative, and easy to navigate.

Moreover, the site has been a great marketing tool to show our clients before they sign with us. It has many resources and project pages, including a comprehensive timeline of our company history. These resources have increased user engagement and time spent on the site. The site has also helped us get at least a few new projects.

In terms of performance, we’ve experienced no issues or bugs with the site. 

How did Motive perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management has been perfect — they’ve delivered everything on time and within budget. We communicate with them via email, and they send me a report every month. The reports show us what social media posts have been the most successful, how long people are spending time on our site, what kind of things they’re looking at, and other key metrics. Their team also continuously provides suggestions to update our SEO and keep us on the top pages of Google.

We worked with Motive to design our "Values" wall and logo wall.  The Values wall incorporates our 5 values, multiple icons and value descriptions on floating panels and highlighted by spotlights.  Our logo wall is an LED lighted sign that needed to be wired to code.  Motive's scope was to design these walls to our specifications and colors and assist with getting the correct vendors lined up to do the work.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The end result was two walls that highlight our company name and values that look beautiful, are on brand, and really drive home our culture.

Motive did a great job communicating and meeting design deadlines.  When we were selecting vendors to complete the build, they fasilitated getting bids and assisting with walkthroughs of our space and design.  During the build, they kept tabs on timelines and held the vendors accountable.  While the timeline was very long, ultimately this was not their fault as the sign build vendor made electrical mistakes that had to be sorted out, modified and re-fabricated to code.  Motive kept tabs on the vendor and pushed for deadlines.

Motive is personable and understands our business.  We've done a number of projects with them and they continue to provide lasting value in each and every engagement.  Their designs and assistance really check the box for me.

Not that I can think of.  Again, the timeline was pretty long but that was not their fault.

I was the CEO of a construction company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Motive?

We were doing $10–$15 million in revenue as a construction company but had no formal marketing team. We cobbled things together with a group of people doing things in-house. I studied a lot of marketing in college, and I had Photoshop and InDesign that I could use to create designs, but our marketing efforts got too big. We were looking for a much better presence than websites and a bunch of different marketing materials.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We hired Motive to work with us as our marketing team. We had a clear vision of what we wanted to provide to our employees, but Motive did the majority of our outward-facing messaging and marketing. They set us up for social media and developed our website. They also increased our SEO and created simple marketing materials like an internal letterhead. They printed an employee handbook and manual, created graphics for our office, and created flyers.

Moreover, Motive came up with a really cool in-house handbook that our team used, so we passed that out to all of our employees. The team also created social media marketing campaigns for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (now X). Overall, Motive did a lot of significant things for us.

Daniel was my main point of contact. When I originally reached out, he had some freelancers he was working with. Over 2–3 years, he started to recruit them onto his team, which I think was made up of ten different members at that point.

We reached out to about five local firms, and Motive was one of them. We found Motive to be the best value for the money that was out there.

We spent around $100,000.

We worked together from January 2015–December 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The fact that I continued to use them for seven years during the entire time I was the head of the company and the fact that they still use them are a testament to the fact that it was working. Our revenue went from $2 million–$12 million over that time period, so things were going well.

How did Motive perform from a project management standpoint?

Everything was delivered on time and on budget. Daniel ensured that we agreed on everything we asked for. When you’re used to not spending any money on marketing, it’s tough to jump in and put together a big budget for marketing. It feels painful to do that, but it was well worth the money spent.

Most of the time, our collaboration was in person, but we had some Microsoft Teams meetings during the pandemic. The rest of the time, we communicated through email. When we weren't meeting in person, we always had access to a slide deck and other tools to keep track of tasks and collaborate.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Daniel was amazing. He came up with logos, letterhead, and everything that drove the marketing of our entire company. He got us $12 million to work. He knew what he was doing and did a great job. We were really happy to know him. I’m starting a new company, and I’ve already reached out to him. My intention is to use him the entire time as well.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Daniel understood me and my company. When I talked to him about my needs, he understood them better than I did. I didn’t have to take him a huge set of information. Even if I did, he would be able to reroute the program and know exactly which route we should take and why. He understood me, my needs, and everything, which made him understand my business and how it was going to operate. He was steps ahead, which was awesome.

Are there any areas they could improve?

One negative was that things generally cost more, but Daniel was upfront about that cost. To be honest, they were still relatively cheap.

As mentioned, when I initially contracted Motive, Daniel's services were subcontracted. However, he took care of the communication between the parties involved. At the time, it was a growing business, so I'm sure that a lot of things have changed since.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Establishing a relationship with Daniel was the most crucial thing I did. We hit it off about our businesses and lives. He understood how I treated my employees and what we wanted things internally to look like, which also projected out what we wanted our customers to see.

He dictated the culture of my company because he understood all of that. I got a lot out of it because I was open to that, and I would tell somebody else to do the same.

I’m the managing director of CODIPRAL LLC. We’re a wine import and distribution company in Idaho and Washington.

We’re still working with them, and they provide us with website support and maintenance. They also monitor the website and ensure that it’s secure.

Motive is responsive and does excellent work. Rebekah is good at describing various wines and where they’re from — she and the team have found a nice set of maps to describe the various appellations of wine-producing countries.

The project is reasonably well-managed. They tell us the timings and expectations, and if we have issues with costs, we can engage with each other to ensure we stay on budget. In general, we’re on budget and on time. We use emails to communicate.

The descriptions that Rebekah has produced are great. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Motive responds quickly when there’s an issue, and I can reach them easily. I also like the website's style — it’s contemporary and modern even though it describes an old industry.

No, there aren’t any.

Have a clear vision of what you want for the website. They won’t know it unless you communicate it to them. Think it through, and don’t change the project midway through. Doing so will increase your time and costs. Overall, don’t do it on the fly — have a plan.

So, looking back on the project with Motive over a coffee, I’d say it was a really solid experience. They totally got what we were aiming for at Vertical Ledge—boosting brand awareness and pulling in the right kind of leads. We started by diving into our audience, really analyzing what clicked with them, especially around B2B sales, pop-ups, and those cool, experiential setups. Motive helped us create messaging that just felt right for each segment, which made a huge difference. It wasn’t just about throwing ads out there; it was about connecting in a way that felt on-brand and purposeful.

And, oh, the creative side of things was a lot of fun! They came up with some killer ad ideas—think seasonal stuff, promos, the works. Everything looked sharp across Google, social, display ads...you name it. It all stayed true to the Vertical Ledge vibe, which was a big win for us. I loved how they kept it all consistent across channels, making sure people knew it was us no matter where they saw the ads.

Then, we got into audience segmentation, which was super helpful, especially with our core markets like FF&E, hospitality, and corporate spaces. They helped us break down each campaign to fit the unique needs of each audience. Plus, they were all over the performance tracking. Every month, we got these reports that weren’t just numbers but actual insights we could work with. It made it easy to tweak things as we went along, which kept everything fresh and efficient. All in all, I’d say working with them felt like a solid partnership—lots of real, meaningful progress.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Chatting through what Motive brought to the table, we saw some impressive results, especially in shifting from DTC to B2B leads within just a few months. Their approach got us a solid ROAS month after month, consistently sitting around 3-8%—and that’s with a pretty lean Google Ads budget. They weren’t just handling ads; they were shaping up actionable brand scripts and a solid marketing strategy, which kept everything on track during our monthly or bi-weekly calls. 

They’ve also been super proactive on the tech side, catching little website issues—glitches, bugs, you name it—before they could cause any headaches. It’s been great because they either flag it for me to fix or jump in and handle it. They even brought in team members when we started talking about a potential web redesign, mapping out ideas and addressing the challenges we faced moving away from DTC and into a B2B space. And I love how they always keep ad budgets in mind; they’re mindful of getting the most bang for our buck without overspending. It’s been the kind of partnership where they’re as invested in the results as we are, and it really shows.

That way, while ads continue to perform well, we could focus on other growth areas I might not be seeing.

They crafted, with us, our brand name, script, logo, colors, and all other foundational elements. 

They built and delivered our beautiful website that shows who we are & met all the many financial compliance requirements. They did all of the design and userface. They also did research to complete the copywriting within the frame of our brand voice. 

Motive guided us through the process of creating print and digital materials for client presentations, classes, and advertising. Most notable was the design and creation of our "welcome guide" (multiple page booklet for new clients), business cards, business folders, and note cards. All with intentional thought & care towards the style and texture choices. 

They handle our google ads and SEO that deliver us new leads on a regular basis. Many of which convert into closed deals. Motive checks in frequently to monitor success and adjust as needed.

They've helped us ensure brand consistency with other vendors, particularly when capturing photos and videos for social media.

Motive also provides monthly data reporting on our website, Google ads, and social media.

On an ongoing basis, we have projects in the works for: more website landing pages, branded "swag," creation of one page flyers/guides from current material and new information, a brand guide to share with vendors, an illustration project creating characters to work alongside our branding as story-telling motifs for ads and education, and general advice and guidance in the brand, marketing, and advertisement world.

We had almost no online/google/cold leads before working with motive. Since the creation of our website and their skill with google ads and seo (with a relatively minimal budget), we now receive a steady flow of online leads. Many of these do convert, in fact one just closed on a home today! 

The website and high end brand materials also have made an impression on our current partners while attracting new partners. It's become our digital business card. We get calls from new agents asking to meet and listing agents feel more secure in our clients' offers upon reviewing the website.

We have a bi-weekly zoom call to check in, ask questions, and discuss any needs. Usually we are the slow ones! They are speedy to respond and happy to work at our pace and urgency for each project.

Most impressive is the true care and passion we feel they have for us and our business. No task or request is too small; all I have to do is ask. We engaged with Motive to replace an outdated and cumbersome website.  Motive facilitated our team through a super-helpful visioning process to really pin down our target audience and key goals for the new website.  They executed the redesign starting with wireframe iteration, through concept design iterations, and finally full backend programming and content population.  They delivered the project on time and on budget, and were instrumental in extracting content from our internal resources in a time-effective manner.

Since the original deployment, Motive has maintained full ownership of the site, handing minor content and nnavigation update requests promptly, and is now starting work on another revision to better align the site taxonomy with our new internal product data sheets and identification.

Our new website went live as planned, and has had high praise from customers and colleagues on site appearance and utility.

Motive manged our redesign project well, and continues to be responsive to maintenence tasks.  They seem to have an effective internal tracking system, since our requests don't fall throught he cracks or get bounced around.

Typically, our work requests fall into one of three buckets: ad-hoc requests are submitted over e-mail and handled real-time.  Mid-size requests typically involve a virtual meeting to agree on scope and cost range.  Larger requests are scoped vie combination of virtual and in-person meetings, quoted as  not-to-exceed price, and then executed to that plan.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

There are lots of places that can spin a website, but the team at Motive was really fun to work with; they did great work for us, and I genuinely enjoy spending time with all of their staff.  In addition to delivering on our project, they made us better.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Motive could have done differently?

Looking back, if I could do anything differently, it would be for us to have cleaner and better articulated structure for our products as part of the original site design.  The development of the site and subsequent iterations have really cleaned that up for us now, but it was an expensive way to iterate via website development.  With hindsight, Motive could have asked us to lock ourselves in a room for a couple of days and create that clarity in the early stages of the project.

Local directory submissions (doing a campaign of 30 sites right now)
Sitespeed improvements – we are making progress with page load timesit would be helpful to add  RocketCDN (content delivery network) on to your existing wp rocket license. It’s $79 per year or $8/mo. Let me know if I have approval to add this.

Created design scope for designer to create landing page
Generated keyword opportunities for campaign and ad group structure
