We wanted to collaborate with Journeyman Films to produce an update to a documentary film that had been created by Journeyman 13 years earlier, about a young girl named Donna growing up amid social and structural health challenges. The original film has become a key teaching resource for us. We hoped to revisit Donna’s story to see how her life has progressed through the years — and hopefully to bring the ideas of proximal health to life through Donna’s ongoing life experiences.
We had followed the original film for years — it was created by Mathew and Journeyman Film Company, and it had been incredibly impactful in our teaching. We reached out directly to Mathew to ask if an update might be possible.
The scope of work included researching and developing a follow-up film centered on Donna’s life in the years since the original story.The follow up story involved sensitive subject material — including family trauma, personal trauma, and social stressors — and required time, trust, and emotional sensitivity. Mathew led a creative process of interviewing, filming, editing, and narrative construction for the film, while inviting us into regular creative discussions. The final deliverable was a 12-minute documentary film, publicly available online, that we use for teaching, research, and advocacy.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
The film has been used in our classrooms and the response from students has been powerful — emotional engagement, deep questions, and nuanced reflection. There’s a sense of insight and continuity from Donna’s story that has helped to humanize the abstract ideas we teach. Learners don’t just learn about the idea of proximal health — they experience it emotionally through the film. They feel it – the film brings the ideas to life for them. That’s success to us.

Mathew’s process is thoughtful and intentional, especially important for a project of this sensitivity. He was responsive to timelines, communicated very well, and was deeply respectful of the content and the people involved. He was notably responsive to our ideas and feedback.
Our production team was located throughout the US and Canada. Most of our collaboration took place through regular Zoom meetings, along with follow-up emails and occasional phone calls. Despite being geographically diverse, we felt closely connected throughout the process.

It is with great pleasure that I can recommend Mathew Welsh and Journeyman Film Company. Premium Seafoods Group hired Mathew and Journeyman to create a corporate video. The company undertook a rebranding initiative that included the creation of a company video. The video was to be the first our company has ever had and we demanded a high standard; a standard Mathew and Journeyman met without question. Creating a video/film is part science and part art. From reviewing their previous work, we felt confident Journeyman would create an excellent video in terms of the cinematography. The unknown was the art of creating the story that captured the essence of who the company is and what we have to offer. Trying to pull all the pieces together, from functions and processes of what we do; relationships with suppliers; importance of community; what we believe in; and who our employees and owners really are was a daunting task. However, Mathew was a consummate professional and skilled filmmaker in bringing all of the pieces together to create a compelling and interesting story that did just that. Mathew's commitment to the project was always evident. Whether it was the dawn to dusk film shoots or countless hours of footage to get it just right, I knew we were going to get a quality video. In choosing Journeyman, we realized we would be spending a lot more than what we had originally budgeted for. Our decision to make the greater investment to hire Journeyman came with some nervousness as well as an increased expectation in the quality of video we would receive. The saying "you get what you pay for" held true. We now have a video that is exactly what we had hoped it would be. One that that does a great job of presenting who we are and what we do and is something that the entire company, from the employees to the owners, is proud of. For that reason I do not hesitate in recommending Mathew and Journeyman Film.

Journeyman Films has been my go-to video storyteller on work in both community development and clean energy. Professional, creative, thorough – they won’t let you do the hackneyed and over-done. To deliver a video for use internally and externally that demonstrates a corporate committment to diversity, equity and inclusion by highlighting an Indigenous art installation at an operating site. The project involved story mining, lengthy interviews and unique film perspectives to tell a story of Indigenous cultural celebration. The Journeyman story started in the documentary film world. We decided that organizations need more filmmaker and writer help, to transform the most simple subject into a story. Lots of video companies talk about "storytelling" and in fact, the word is overused. But we really like looking for the story structure that will make an audience care and relate to any subject. We're based in a cool, smaller city on Canada's east coast, and are pretty open minded about all subjects.
