The scope of work involved comprehensive market research to assess form factor preferences for a new fitness tracking device for our company, VALR. The project included both qualitative and quantitative research phases to gather consumer insights and preferences.
Phase I consisted of 30-minute interviews with 15 participants who met our target demographic criteria (Apple Watch wearers who exercise 2-4 times weekly and run at least once per week). The vendor was responsible for identifying and recruiting these qualified participants. Phase II involved a 10-minute online survey with 1,000 respondents meeting the same screening criteria, with the vendor handling all participant sourcing, screening, and qualification to ensure a representative sample.
Key deliverables included a detailed research report presenting:
- Qualitative findings on consumer fitness goals, tracker usage patterns, and pain points with existing devices
- Quantitative findings on demographic information, exercise habits, event participation, and device preferences
- Analysis of consumer openness to multiple tracking devices and opinions on Apple Watch
- Conjoint analysis identifying the relative importance of form factor, reliability, characteristics, and function
- Preference rankings of various fitness tracker form factors (Apple Watch band, wristband, ring, armband, etc.)
- Clear recommendations based on consumer preferences, highlighting the Apple Watch band with fitness sensor as the preferred form factor

- Definitive form factor preference data showing 50% of respondents believed an Apple Watch band with a fitness sensor would best help them achieve their fitness goals, compared to 28% for a wristband and 22% for a ring.
- Comprehensive conjoint analysis revealing the relative importance of product attributes: form factor (35%), reliability (27%), characteristics (19%), and function (19%), giving us precise weighting for product development priorities.
- Identification of specific consumer pain points with current devices, with 36% reporting watches getting in the way of daily activities and 33% noting scratching issues, allowing us to address these concerns in our design.
- Validation that 77% of respondents are open to wearing a second fitness band while exercising, confirming market viability for our product concept.
- Clear understanding of consumer concerns regarding under-wrist sensors, with 58% accepting them if they're not noticeable and 53% if they're non-irritating, providing specific design parameters.
