Basecamp was recruited to design and implement a comprehensive new brand strategy and website design across the company's three core brands. This included a complete new parent brand identity with logo and website, as well as two additional sub-brands that needed to fit into the overall identity. The website needed to incorporate all three brands in a scalable and consumable structure.

We were a growing UX organization but were still understaffed. There are many projects kicking off with limited resources. We needed additional help during busy times.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We engage with Campground on an hourly basis under a staff augmentation model. They have been involved in developing product design mock-ups, and over the past year, they have contributed significantly to our design system.

Initially, we conducted a preliminary discussion to assess their suitability for the project. Campground provided us with their pricing structure, and discussed our needs. They provided their expertise and once we finalized the scope of work, we proceeded with drafting a formal contract for approval. Subsequently, after signing off on the project, they were introduced to our team, and collaboration commenced.

The design system serves as a comprehensive style guide, library and documentation system encompassing detailed documentation of UI components and code that supports over 20 products and multiple platforms (iOS, Android, desktop, web). Campground works with our team to design various UI elements and components and the accompanying guidelines to ensure consistency across our products and adherence to our brand.

Given our arrangement akin to staff augmentation, we allocate approximately eight hours per week to Campground, prioritizing tasks related to the development and maintenance of our design system. Before each sprint, we work with them to align on the work.

I was familiar with the work of the co-founders so I looked into their services. My UX organization was growing but it was still understaffed. I met with them to understand what their services were to see if it would be of help for us. I also looked at their work and their pricing and determined it would be a good fit.

We started working with them when they launched in July 2021. The design system project started about a year ago, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Campground has significantly reduced our design time by 65% and development time by 80%. We value our continued partnership with Campground due to their extensive expertise, which enables us to achieve faster project execution by providing the necessary skills and experience and acting as an extension to our in-house team.

Campground is extremely organized throughout the engagement, starting from understanding what's needed to delivery of the work. They consistently provide accurate estimates and adhere to timelines. Our team feels confident they can rely on Campground to deliver when they say the will. We use an embedded model where Campground integrates into our workflows and works closely with our designers. They have access access to our network and tools to make our collaboration seamless.

Our communication channels include Zoom, email, Figma, and Jira, with occasional use of monday.com.

Their experience and skills in UX design are impressive. Campground knows what they’re doing. We provide little direction for them; they just take care of everything for us, which is exactly what we need.

Provide clear communication of what you're looking for. Don't worry if you're unsure, you can discuss with Campground and they can provide you with knowledge and expertise you can trust. Campground will work with you to figure it out.

They checked in weekly, stuck to the budget, and met deadlines. We pushed them for a quick turnaround, and it was really impressive that they delivered a whole rebranding within a month. Moreover, they responded well to feedback but knew when to push back and give their opinion. We communicated through email, Slack, and Google Meet.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They did the initial explorations by hand, and it felt very bespoke. Moreover, Campground was super professional and passionate about what they did. They always tried to deliver the best design they could come up with, and the team was fun and had great energy.

We reached out to Campground to help us create our new brand and its look and feel. We started the project by sending them some initial thoughts and inspiration for the rebrand. From there, Colin (Co-Founder & Design Director), started doing some sketches and framing out some typography, and bringing some of our concepts to life so we could visualize them. 

After we reviewed their work, we did some refinements, and they provided us with the final deliverables, which included our new name, colors, and logo, as well as a presentation going over the process they went through.

We hired Campground for an entirely new website re-design, and then to work on all customer facing branding, marketing, and design efforts moving forward.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Our design partner search covered all possible solutions from full-time hires, individual contractors, and ultimately design boutiques. Campground's portfolio, experience, process, tools, and personal touch were the blend of deciding factors.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

Building on the existing Credo AI brand, the task was to completely modernize and reimagine both the visual aesthetics and user experience of our website (credo.ai), then to build on that updated brand and extend outward to social media banners, graphics, event websites, sales materials, and all marketing and GTM efforts.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We have directly interfaced with Colin as project lead and lead designer, and with Dewi for copywriting and content generation.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

A major metric for success was zero down time and issues in transitioning from our old website to the new site, and meeting out launch deadlines. Campground went above and beyond for us to meet all goals.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Any challenges in workflow or scheduling has been from our side. Colin and team are extremely flexible on meeting schedules, responsive on Slack, and receive feedback in whatever format works best for us.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Being a design leader, I was looking for a design partner that uses all the industry best practices and knowledge to focus on the work itself. Additionally, being able to rapidly spin up knowledge on our new market (Responsible AI) would be a huge time-consuming challenge for most, but Colin and Campground's learning curve was impressively fast.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

It's hard to identify major areas of weakness for improvement with Campground. From our side, gathering content ahead of a project would speed up project and require less meetings and back and forth feedback.

I'm an executive at a medical diagnostic space. We have a consumer-facing product, which is a mobile app that accompanies our at-home diagnostic tests for COVID-19, flu, etc.

What challenge were you trying to address with Campground?

Campground helps us create our mobile application system, UX flows, and branding designs.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I did a competitor assessment and had some preliminary wireframes, but Campground has built all of the prototypes from low fidelity to high fidelity. They've only focused on the UI/UX side of the app using Figma, but designing the app was a collaborative effort.

Regarding requirements, we needed something that could digitize workflow and relieve stress in the testing process by making clear, step-by-step, spoon-fed instructions on how to do the test properly, including animations for the different steps. The app also allows users to store the results for future access.

I work with about three people from their team.

They were referred to me, and I had previous experience working with a member of their team at my previous company.

We've spent around $50,000 with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We've done some consumer research studies, and the feedback on the app has been tremendous; 16 out of 16 participants highly preferred the app workflow over the paper instructions.

We cited the most from a business perspective; how the app reduced stress and anxiety and how confident users felt. Both of those came back extremely strong for the app.

How did Campground perform from a project management standpoint?

They always deliver on time, and they're very responsive. I communicate with them through Slack and Figma — we have direct communication almost daily.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their UI/UX skill set, calm demeanor, and approach when we get into problems are outstanding. Their team has a knack for keeping a level head in the conversation and bringing up good points and counterpoints so that we're open and receptive to hearing.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I'm working directly with one member of their team for the most part, so it'd be interesting to watch how Campground scale with the same quality and responsiveness.

Any advice for potential customers?

From a product manager standpoint, do your product management work. Bring the context of the problem you want to solve, what's happening in the competitor space, and how you're trying to differentiate.

I’m the founder of Waydger; a startup focused on a mobile app that allows people to play their interests. For example, suppose a user reads about, watches, and discusses a topic. In that case, they can play little snackable games of prediction during real-life events to engage with their community and content.

What challenge were you trying to address with Campground?

Initially, we hired them to design a web app for our CMS.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Campground designed the UI/UX of a web app for our CMS. Customers playing the prediction games in teal time need the games managed by a content creator, and this web app is the means of administering these games. 

In terms of requirements, we started with a blank sheet of paper and gave them access to the beta version of our iOS mobile app so that they had a bit of a feel for what we were going for brand-wise. They created all the screens and user flows with the administrator in mind. From the user flows, they went to the wireframes and then created fully illustrated designs using Figma. This first part of the project took four months.

Then, the engagement evolved, and Campground audited and redesigned the UI/UX of our mobile app, which they worked on for the next six months.

I only worked with Colin (Co-Founder & Director). We also met Dewi (Co-Founder & Sr. UX Designer) a handful of times. 

How did you come to work with Campground?

I found Colin through another agency; it was one of the only projects he’d engaged on at the time. Then, he started working with his own design studio with Campground.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $35,000–$40,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from August 2021–June 2022.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Although it's still early days, Campground's work for the CMS has set the groundwork for the app's development. They built design files that are hyper-intuitive and very cleanly designed. Our developers have found that their Figma files have been very effective in allowing smooth development. We consider this an absolute success because it was very important to us that we didn't have to go back to the team to ask questions or have to redesign anything. 

As for the mobile app, our beta app's user testing had a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of five out of 10. After Campground redesigned the UI/UX, the NPS increased to an 8–9 for the second round of user testing 4–5 months later. We haven't launched yet, so we don't have massive substantive data. Although we've had small sample sizes of 30 and 100 users, these results show that we've gotten to a place where the design makes more sense, and users are pleased with the aesthetics and the flow. 

Moreover, Campground was very good at internalizing how the product had to work on both the web and the mobile app. Both apps need to be hyper-responsive and update multiple times per second, and the team was great at thinking up responsive designs. Overall, I'm really excited about both projects. 

How did Campground perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was good. Since ours was a smaller project than the ones the team takes on, we had some starts at stops throughout the 10 months we worked together. Considering this aspect, they did an excellent job carving our weekly time on Fridays to talk. Those were very productive calls where they would present their work for the week, and the team consistently delivered work ahead of the calls for us to review. 

There were also times when things slowed down on our side, and they were very flexible and amenable to those delays. We couldn't have been happier with how they worked with our schedule. For example, we paused the project on some weeks; on other weeks, we asked if they could put in 20 hours, and the team was very flexible. 

We communicated via Slack, where Campground had access to the individuals working on the mobile and web app,  and we had real-time feedback. They were very accessible on the channels and very proactive at all times. We used Google Meet for our Friday calls. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

What I most valued about Campground was their accessibility. In terms of their communication style, they understood what we were trying to build and then did a really good job working with us iteratively to come up with good designs. This all comes down to the people, and the team was phenomenal at understanding our needs and bending over backward to meet them. I couldn't recommend Campground more highly. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

Given our budget, they did everything we could have possibly asked for and even more. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I'd recommend ensuring you know who will work on your project and understanding each individual's bandwidth. If you're offered all of Colin's attention, I wholeheartedly recommend you take the project. Campground is a new business, so make sure you're on the same page regarding the level of attention you'll get from someone you trust. I'd work with them again in a heartbeat.
