What challenge were you trying to address with ARTIN?
We needed help with custom software development.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
ARTIN has been developing a custom software solution for our insurance agents to sell our policies to customers. The team has also been providing management and support services.
For this project, ARTIN has been involved in the discovery, design, and development phases. Initially, the team conducted an investigation to see if the application suited our needs. They analyzed the products that the country wished to sell, the existing IT solutions, and the integrations needed. Then, ARTIN created a plan for completing the development and started the actual development process.
ARTIN has been working closely with us and the countries involved. The team has been using Angular, JavaScript, Java, Kotlin, Azure DevOps, and Linux. They’ve also generated APIs.
ARTIN’s solution allows agents to record all the customer details and calculate those details to create the best cost for the customer. Users can also generate illustrations so customers can see the benefits over time. Additionally, ARTIN has been developing features like payments, auto-underwriting, and different portals for electronic signatures.
What is the team composition?
We have around 30 people working on this project, including a project manager, two scrum leads, developers, and testers.
How did you come to work with ARTIN?
ARTIN was already working with us when I got my position. They had been working on this project for the country, and when we decided to make it regional, we continued working with them.
How much have you invested with them?
We spend around $2 million a year.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in January 2011, and the engagement is ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We’ve traditionally engaged with ARTIN through the Waterfall model, where we send the requirements, and they send back the product. However, we’ve changed to the Agile methodology, which has allowed us to work more closely with ARTIN. This has been a big change for both teams.
Since the change, the quality of ARTIN’s work has improved dramatically. We experienced many problems in the Waterfall model. However, switching to the Agile methodology has allowed us to work more closely with ARTIN and give feedback and clarifications at a much earlier part of the development cycle. This has led to a far higher quality of ARTIN's products.
Moreover, we’ve seen huge benefits in the development process. We went from 18 months for product development to nine months for a similar type of product. We’re generally seeing less than three months required for product development, down from six months or longer in many cases.
How did ARTIN perform from a project management standpoint?
ARTIN communicates very well with me. They mostly deliver on time and on budget. There are hiccups to be expected, but they’re mostly on time and on budget.
We use Azure DevOps for tracking tasks and Microsoft Teams for regular communication through calls and messages. We also use Outlook for emails and WebEx for other types of calls.
What did you find most impressive about them?
ARTIN is technically skilled and has a great ownership mindset. They have very good technical resources and knowledge of the project. Additionally, they're hands-on and invested in the project's success.
Are there any areas they could improve?
ARTIN can slightly improve their communication. I would’ve had a bigger list of complaints two years ago, but we’ve been working closely, and a lot of those issues have been ironed out.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Be very open with ARTIN about your requirements. Work closely with them to ensure they understand those requirements fully. If that’s the case, ARTIN will technically deliver what you need. This way, you'll be able to build a relationship and a way to work with them.

I’m an area product owner and manage the development environment and R&D for Y Soft, custom software development company. We provide an internet cloud service that people can subscribe to and use for their printing environment. We also develop on-prem software that people can use.

What challenge were you trying to address with ARTIN?
We needed to staff our engineering teams.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
ARTIN provides us with staff augmentation services. We have a long-term cooperation with them for continuous product development. They operate on our two main products.
We have specific, uncommon product technology and provide ARTIN with a list of what we're asking for. We also ask for teammates who are willing to learn and continue in that area for a long period. Recently, as the product has developed, we've introduced new aspects of the service, such as providing a cloud service in addition to the on-prem software, which means we’ve asked for capabilities around DevOps and operating the software in the cloud.
We have a backlog of work, and as long as it’s within a certain technology scope, they can pick up any work that’s required. Out of our 16 engineering teams, five are staffed by ARTIN, and each team has seven members. They provide a combination of on- and off-site services.
What is the team composition?
I'm in contact with a project manager and Scrum master. We also work with five teams of seven engineers, and I know all the members of the teams.
How did you come to work with ARTIN?
The company has been working with them continuously for 5–6 years, and I've been involved heavily for the last four years, so I'm unsure how the engagement started.
How much have you invested with them?
We spend $2–$3 million annually.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in October 2019, and it’s ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
ARTIN's service is really good; they offer end-to-end services, meaning we can treat their teammates as our own without additional cost, hardware equipment, or HR needs. ARTIN provides a group of people who know each other and work as a team in the best way. There have been instances where they've gone beyond what our core or standard employees would go. We appreciate the ability to have expendable teams. They can change staffing and lower the size of our teams without the negative impact of layoffs.
ARTIN understands their role in our company and goes beyond in terms of delivering what we need. For example, they can identify a technology that's not implemented as well as it should be and look into it for more than a month, and they've been right about their assessment. They look at things from a different perspective and pick up work that’s less interesting for others.
When we introduced the cloud service, ARTIN reacted well and changed some teammates. They are self-managed in the way the Scrum methodology describes and can gain or swap people within their organization to staff their teams. Therefore, they're quicker to react to changes than our core teams because they have a pool of engineers and can quickly swap teammates while keeping the core team and skills.
How did ARTIN perform from a project management standpoint?
We run on a large-scale Scrum framework, so we have a cycle every two weeks to cross-check our work. They perform as well as or better than our core teams. They’re really caring and don’t slack on any of their deliveries. We primarily communicate via Microsoft Teams, though we also use email. Regarding project management tools, they work within our environment, and I don't believe they use any additional tools internally.
We have a branch in one of their locations, and their office is close to ours, so we can meet with them on-site a few times a week as needed. However, this is more of a coincidence than a need on our part.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The most impressive thing is the people they’ve gathered. We’ve tried other service providers who have provided teammates with the qualifications, but they had never seen each other and weren't co-located, so it was impossible for them to work as a team.
ARTIN’s team knows each other and is culturally fit so that they can deliver the work. When we give them an assignment, we do not need to worry about how they split the work between the seven people in a team; it's all on them. Compared to the other providers, ARTIN delivers fabulous work.
Are there any areas they could improve?
My only complaint is the higher cost compared to our other teams, but they’re the perfect fit for our needs.

When we need a change or adjustment of any kind, the Account Manager always looks for brisk solution instead of explanations or even excuses. ARTIN's teammates comply with our best practices and consistently deliver good work. If a developer is not a good fit for whatever reason, ARTIN finds a replacement swiftly. Onboarding of Artinians takes much less onboarding time than an average in-house hire, Artinians bring their expertise and take just a couple of weeks to get fully on-board and efficient.

The Artin team joined as a fully integrated team, covering all essential roles required for the development of functionality within our environment. Business requirements, and thus the product manager role, were handled internally by our team.
The team was able to take business requirements, analyze them, and translate them into a technical solution, which they then implemented end-to-end into our platform. As a result, two new microservices were developed in Kotlin. The frontend was integrated into our existing monorepo.
Our end users gained the ability to use several types of workflows, managing tasks such as granting access to sensitive data or approving system changes.

Delivery of very complex solution in time and scope, without signification issues and escalations. Satisfaction of the end-customer.

ARTIN always responds promptly. They had multiple PMs in time running their deliverables. All of them contributed to the success of the project. Their project management team is skilled and is able to work in both classic waterfall and also agile approach.
