Recommendations:

A freelance writer used Weebly to build up their online presence and create an online portfolio. They like that Weebly is very easy to set up and that it offers website analytics. However, the templates and designs were not modern or suitable to showcase a writing portfolio.

Background

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a freelance writer and book critic. I mostly do writing related to literature but I’m doing a lot of pitching as well. I write about books, culture, and some international politics.

What challenge were you trying to address by using Weebly?

As a freelancer, I don’t have a home base so that’s what I need my website to be. It has to be a place where people can go to get information about me and serve as a hub for all the writing I’m doing across internet and print.

Solution

Were you considering other platforms? Why this platform?

I didn’t know anything about building a website so I did a Google search and Weebly came up as an affordable option. I started messing around with it and was able to pull the website together quickly, which is what I was looking for.

How do you use Weebly?

Right now, I’m in the process of switching over to Squarespace. My Weebly site is very basic. There’s an About page with information and I’ve got a contact form and my CV posted there. I also have a link to my TinyLetter account so people can sign up there. Mostly it’s a landing page with links to everything I’ve written, which is why I’m switching to Squarespace.

Setup did not require any code or technical skills. They had a template where I could put my information in. There are drag and drop elements as well.

I liked it at first because it was so simple. Now, I don’t like it at all. I think it looks unprofessional compared to the competition. Weebly hasn’t kept up with trends. They recently rolled out some new options but there’s not much variety.

They provided images and I did use one of them and was happy with it. I provided other images myself.

On an annual or monthly basis, how much does your company spend to utilize the platform?

My domain is $50 a year for Weebly and Squarespace is $120.

Results

Can you share any success, metrics, or overall results of your implementation of this platform?

It’s been beneficial to be able to send the link to editors to show them my work. However, I haven’t really been able to build a brand around my site the way I’d like to.

Features

Were there any software features/tools that you were really impressed by?

At the time, I was really into the site stats. They’re very basic, but as somebody who doesn’t have any access to site stats, it was nice to know what people were looking at, how many people were coming to my site, and where they were coming from.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software that you feel could be added or improved upon?

It comes down to the aesthetic of the site. At this point, that’s the most important thing for me. I’m looking at possibly changing things in my career, so I need to make my site more of a focal point of my work. I need something professional that people are going to look at and think of me as an established writer, which is something Weebly can’t give me right now.

What has been the process of switching from Weebly to Squarespace?

I started from scratch because I don’t know how to do it any other way. I copied and pasted everything into a Google Doc and pieced it together as I wanted it in my Squarespace page.

Have you had to interact with the platform’s support team or reference their support resources?

I use some of their tutorial pages. They were really helpful and answered all of my questions.

Overall Score It was good for what it was good for, but it’s definitely a site that you grow out of.

Recommendations:

I would recommend for someone to utilize Weebly as a portfolio and business building platform. The site offers business development features such as email marketing, SEO applications, and unlimited space to input product information and data. For portfolios, Weebly offers a number of themes and formats specified to an individual's personal or career interests. They also allow you to customize your background, add images, audio, and video content, and track who is on your site and when. It's definitely an effective tool in our digital society, and a great way to easily introduce your work or business.

Experience:

I selected Weebly because it was the first DIY website building platform that I became familiar with. One problem that needed to be solved was the automatic formatting that doesn't allow you to move your content/images to certain areas on a page. I used video and image features, SEO marketing tools like tag lines and keyword search, blog features, social media widgets, and contact pages. Weebly has performed exceptionally well on the technical and graphic design side of it all. I've received a larger audience base and rates of clicks once I updated my site to make it more user friendly.

Pros:

I like that Weebly allows you to customize your own designs on each of its pages. It's a great tool for me because it is a great portfolio and presentation building platform that allows you to use many features for free.

Cons:

I dislike the formatting on each of the pages. I wish the formatting was more customized for the user and not set in place based on how it could be. I also think it could have more fonts and background designs updated.

Check out the templates to see if they fit what you need. See if you can customize it so it doesn't look so cookie cutter. And then watch a few YouTube videos to make sure it is easy enough.

Experience:

We started using Weebly because it was one of the offerings through the web hosting site we used. It looked easy. Took me a while to figure things out. Not as easy as it was portrayed. I found it a bit limited. I mostly use the website templates. I was able to figure out how to choose photos and add copy. If I had more time, maybe I would be able to do more, but I really just needed my site up and running. No real issues. There are plenty of YouTube videos to help figure things out. The benefit was that I was able to get the site up and published within a day. From a complete novice, it was much less expensive than hiring someone to build the site. I am able to go back and make simple changes as needed.

Pros:

Fairly easy to navigate. If I put more time and effort into it, I think it would make more sense. But it was simple enough that I could get a site put together and get it up and running quickly.

Cons:

Adding a store seems a little more complicated and expensive. Not sure I really understood the directions and just gave up.

I'd tell them to definitely give it a try. Especially when they have free sites available and where there is no risk involved. If they don't like it, they can just delete their site and go elsewhere. If they do decide they like it, then they could consider an upgrade to a paid version if they want more or better features.

Experience:

I was looking for a free site and had seen others using it. Their sites looked nice so I decided to give it a try. Their templates are mobile optimized which was something I did not know how to do myself. Having mobile optimization was important to me. So, since Weebly was able to solve this problem for me, I felt they were a good choice. The drag and drop feature is what I mostly use. It was not obvious at first how to use it, but after a little trial and error, I found it to be a useful tool. It makes it easy to edit my content. Another feature I use is the non-clickable menu item. This was another thing I did not know how to do myself, so I was happy weebly had this feature. Also recently I figured out how to do a contact form, which is a nice feature for me because now I don't have to display my email on my site and end up with a lot of spam. So far I have been happy with Weebly's performance. It helped me a lot because I knew I needed a site which was mobile optimized, but I did not know how to do it myself. Their ability to switch templates in draft mode has been a benefit to me. I can see how another template will look without having to redo everything if I don't like it. Having the contact form, which I don't know how to do myself, is another benefit as it cuts down on spam which I would have gotten a lot of if I had simply published my email on the site.

Pros:

There are several things I like about Weebly, but if I had to choose one, I suppose it is how their templates are all mobile optimized. It is a great tool for me because this is something I know how to do myself. I even got some books from the library on mobile web design to try and learn how to do it myself, but even after spending a lot of time reading, I still did not have the ability and in the end their site builder tool was what worked for me.

Cons:

It would be nice if there was actual user support, where I could send an email and get a response from a real person if I needed help with something. Instead of just being directed to a user forum or FAQ section. Although as a free site I wouldn't really expect such a luxury unless I were to upgrade to a paid version.

If you are looking to blog or have a simple website with little customization, you might like Weebly. If you are on a budget and just want a domain and website, I recommend Weebly. If you want to drag and drop things anywhere you want, I would not recommend Weebly. Wix allows that, and it has more customization features than Weebly.

Experience:

I chose Weebly because it had overall good reviews and it was a website that I found trustworthy, a website that would provide me services and not scam me. I had a problem with my website being optimized for mobile, so I wrote to Weebly, and they made my website mobile friendly. I use the "drag and drop" features the most because I am not a professional web designer and have no idea about coding. I use the fonts as well and the social media icons. They have done a good job at providing me with a functional domain. As for benefits, I am only paying for a domain at the moment, so I only get the basic web designing tools.

Pros:

It's easy to use for people who aren't web designers. If you are looking to build a simple and minimalist website, Weebly is a good choice. Ideal for bloggers as well.

Cons:

What I dislike about Weebly is that you can't drag and drop things anywhere you want as you can with Wix. There are limits for where you can put text, pictures, videos, etc. I hate that you can't preview your website before publishing it. You have to publish it in order to see changes take place. Customization is very limited even in the premium version.

If you want to get a site up to work with minimal computer knowledge and in a short amount of time then Weebly is the product for you.

Experience:

Weebly was recommended through my FaithWriters community. I wanted a product that would allow me to get my site up and running with minimal time and effort involved. I needed to showcase my writing in a unique manner that would allow the reader to assimilate what I offer in a short amount of time. I use the basic web set up. I display my written works and, specifically, an example of my novel along with the means to buy my work or contact me. It is has accomplished what I desired. I like the look of the site and how easy it is to move around in it.

Pros:

Easy of use. Easy to update in a short amount of time. Don't get too bogged down in complicated ways of doing things.

Cons:

Make it easier for me to drive people to my site.

I would tell them to absolutely get on board. It's very easy to get started.

Experience:

I selected Weebly after doing a Google search and looking at websites with tables that listed the features of free website builders. Weebly had the most features for free with the most storage at the time, so I chose them. I use all of the free features. I have been thinking of upgrading so I can get the rest of the features, but I have yet to do so. I want to upgrade mostly to get my own domain name. I have been very happy with Weebly. It was very easy to get started. Once I got a basic page created, it was easy to locate resources that helped me with more advanced features.

Pros:

The free version has many more options than other free website builders, and it is very easy to figure out even for a newbie.

Cons:

I dislike that I have to pay to get my own domain name. I also dislike that I must place ads on my page for the free version. I am pretty sure all free website builders require that though.

I would recommend anyone to take advantage of all they offer.

Experience:

After carefully reviewing many different websites I chose Weebly. Weebly was much easier to use and had an impressive layout that appealed to what I needed. I found that most websites were a bit pricey for extra features such as adding a domain and statistical data. I use the blogging platform, widgets and social media icons. I also upgraded to have a personal domain registered as well as expanding stats so I can better understand how many come to my page and which pages they interact with the most. So far Weebly has been great to use. I have only had one minor issue that was resolved promptly. Weebly has definitely helped me grow my follower base and allows me to provide great content that can easily be accessed on any device.

Pros:

I like the fact that Weebly has a great team that resolves any issues very quickly and keeps their site up to date. Weebly is a great tool for me because I am a product tester, blogger and brand ambassador. Promoting products and/or brands is my main focus and having a reliable site, like Weebly, is crucial.

Cons:

There is nothing I dislike about Weebly.
