Think then execute.

XTOPOLY is a full service, award-winning mobile interactive agency.

Our POV is 'strategy over tactic' and before taking on a project we take time to understand business goals, objectives and then recommend (then build!) solutions to help meet those business goals. We work side-by-side with our Clients and are available to support long after the project is completed.

Our strategy, ideation, creative, technology and account services teams are all in-house. We have 2 offices, HQ in Orange County and San Francisco.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company.

Our company is a marketing agency and we focus primarily on understanding and designing experiences around prompting and action. We have around 1,500 people in we have many global offices.

What is your role and responsibilities?

I’m the group director of mobile. I run the mobile practice and I’m tasked with building our global mobile practice. I deal with the service offering, the staffing model, the business model, and everything that goes into building a business unit within a much larger agency.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was your goal for working with XTOPOLY?

One of our revenue models is development production. This model shows our ability to produce certain ideas and concepts. Our strategy team outlines a mobile road map, and within that road map are mobile ad banners, SMS [short message service], mobile optimized sites, applications, voice recognition. Then, we add creative design to provide a certain experience. Our ability to develop and produce that experience is our revenue stream. We strategically partnered with XTOPOLY to help us fulfill this workload.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their work.

They bridge the gap between UX [user experience], UI [user interface], and then development. More often than not, we like to do the UX and UI here in-house, and then we work with XTOPOLY to get it produced. We have a limited number of developers in-house and, sometimes, we can’t hire quick enough, so XTOPOLY acts as an overflow department. They do the technical architecture, some UX-based on project basis, and full-development cross platform. That could be app and mobile Web, or it could just be mobile Web. They’ve also produced rich media banners for us in the past.

What was your process for selecting XTOPOLY with which to work?

We triple bid everything, that’s what we’re mandated to do. With XTOPOLY specifically, we launched a strategic partnership with them three years ago. It was mutually beneficial for both companies, and we promoted this in the press. Within that partnership, we have a preferred rate, so that gave them a competitive edge financially.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

They’ve been involved in maybe 10 projects over the course of the last two years, and the spectrum of costs has been very broad. The median is around the $30,000 mark. They have done projects more than $100,000, and they’ve done projects as low as $6,000 or $7,000.

Is the relationship ongoing?

It’s as healthy as it’s always been. We take the strategic partnership very seriously. We spend a lot of time as two companies working together, and things are great. We don’t have anything bad to say about them.

It’s been a relationship that has been mutually beneficial. We treat them like a partner, they treat us like a partner, and we trust them. We trust their development capabilities, and their process. They run a very agile shop. They are much more focused on experience than pure development. We wanted a company that would really approach every individual project almost from fresh, add an additional layer of insight behind user behavior and best in class UX, and then build from those standards versus just building a templated version of what they had.

We were very impressed by their process. We were very impressed by their focus on creative, on user experience, on what delivers the best value to the user, and their ability to get the job done in-house versus outsourcing to one of these countries that we see development shops use.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Do you have any feedback to track the results of the projects?

The results have been very good. XTOPOLY is a small shop of about 15 people, so the one area we’ve experienced a little bit of frustration over a two-year period is when they lost a project manager midway through a program. A company like us has 30 project managers, so if one leaves you always have another person that has intimate details and can take over.

Whereas with a smaller shop like XTOPOLY, what you gain is the agile nature, you gain their ability to react quickly. Also, as far as getting to the end of a project and having an app, or website, or rich media unit perform, we haven’t had any issues at all. Everything at the end of the day has worked to our expectations. Getting there, on the odd occasion, has been slightly frustrating when they have had a change in staff during that period.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

If you ask them, they would tell you they are a 51 percent creative company, a 49 percent development company, and that’s what we need. We do not believe that mobile development should be approached in a commoditized off-the-shelf way.

As consumers become more attention-deprived, and the emphasis on building the best experience with the best value becomes more and more important, then the focus on creative and UX, and having the right experience, is of paramount importance. That sets them very much in a different space to other companies who just have templated builds that they sell as many times as possible. So, I would say that’s the one thing that we find very unique about them.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

No nothing comes to mind. The work has been exemplary. I would say the only area that I would say to watch out is that you are dealing with a small company. Therefore, they don’t have the same safety net when they change staff midway through a project. That’s the only thing I could say. The work itself has been great.

XTOPOLY performed well for the client and delivered quality work on time. The agency was praised for their responsiveness. The client had no criticism for XTOPOLY and highly recommends the agency to others.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company.

[Our company created] a survey questioning system. It’s an app that allows pregnant women to take a survey, and it gives them a health status score in terms of their pregnancy, where they’re at between 0 to 100. If they pick up say 80 or 90, then it tells them that they’re healthy.

About two years ago, the founders were looking for some help developing the mobile app. Being a Midwest company, there isn’t a great access for mobile development out there in Michigan. So, we contacted one of our buddies here in California, and they connected us to XTOPOLY. I’ve worked with them before in terms of mobile development. So, I started working with, them and so far it’s been great.

What is your role and responsibilities?

I’m the COO.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was your goal for working with XTOPOLY?

Being a company that’s very medically focused, we need that additional insight and expertise in mobile development. My background is in technology, and when I’m talking to these physicians it’s a one-way street.

They will either say yes or no, but they won’t be able to provide technological insights  From a technical point of view, I needed a partner like XTOPOLY.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their work.

They helped Baby Q virtually from start to finish, doing the mobile app audit and they did a site audit. They were instrumental on helping us with our branding initiative. I liked that they were flexible, they would be willing to do one section at a time and grow from there, and maybe take out things that we didn’t need.

They were great at creating a plan of action, and getting rid of unnecessary material. Initially, I hired them for the design, and then afterwards they provided a full-on development. They gave us a nice sized budget and broke it down into three different phases. That’s what I love about them, they were flexible.

What was your process for selecting XTOPOLY with which to work?

I knew their investor, and I knew the CEO. I knew them when they were doing SMS [short message service] or mobile messaging, and then they switched over to being a mobile agency several years ago. I figured that bigger is better, and these guys have a team of like 15 developers, 20 designers, just big and bold. I thought that was the right way to go, and then I ended up being treated like a king.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

After they gave us some price reductions, the work was around $50,000.

When did you start working with them?

We started working together in March of 2014.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What can you say about their overall performance?

I like that they delivered on time. They pulled in additionally resources to compete the project on time and they were very reasonable with me throughout the work.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

The biggest thing is responsiveness. They get back to you much faster than any company I have worked with in the past.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

Nothing significant.

How did XTOPOLY perform?

They performed extremely well. Their quality of work is excellent. We are happy with the results and have chosen to use XTOPOLY regularly for similar mobile initiatives.

XTOPOLY is particularly good at pushing the envelope of design and functionality. They are not afraid to tell you if they disagree with you and have other solutions that might make the experience better. They don’t just build what’s on the design board; they choose to exceed expectations. There are always a few good surprises that they produce.

Looking back on the project, is there any area that they could improve or you would do differently?

We are a small group that moves fast, and XTOPOLY is too so sometimes it was difficult getting us fully synched but in the end we powered through it.
