I manage the business development at a garden center grower and wholesale plant retailer.
What challenge were you trying to address with Welby Consulting?
Our team needed a new marketing director to help us with our online presence and give us strategies to improve our promotion. We really wanted to understand what was the best use of our spending and what promotion channel would give us the most returns, whether it was YouTube, Instagram, Google Ads, or Facebook Ads. We were looking for the best way to move forward from a growth perspective.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Welby Consulting is helping us with our social media marketing, and managing our ad spend. We’ve moved some of the things we were doing on YouTube, and started spending more money on Google Analytics and Google Ads. In addition to that, we are creating a wholesale online store, and they’re working with our consultants, making sure that is up and running.
They are also helping us with our SEO efforts in our current website and online store. They’ve fixed their issues and done technical upgrades, making sure they’re working properly.
We talked about our desire to improve our online presence, and potentially our Canada-wide presence. Welby Consulting explained their process to us very clearly. We didn’t move forward with it because it’s more than what we're willing or capable of doing at this point in time.
We also have thoughts of moving everything from Shopify to WooCommerce. However, we haven’t made that decision because we’re in the middle of a busy period — we won’t be doing anything on this issue in the next three months.

I worked only with Grant (President) — he’s been a full-time consultant for us.
How did you come to work with Welby Consulting?
We put out a job posting looking for a full-time marketing director to be an employee, and Grant answered the ad. He had all the requirements in spades — he was more than we were looking for. It was a good opportunity to onboard somebody different from what we were used to. He came in as a full-time consultant and employee to lead our marketing team.

I’ve invested $30,000 CAD (approximately $24,000 USD).
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with Welby Consulting in January 2021, and it’s an ongoing project. Starting in May 2021, we’ll be working on a contract basis, instead of full-time.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Our industry has been growing like crazy during the pandemic. It’s still early on our relationship with them, and it’s difficult to attribute all the growth to them due to the growth we experience within the industry. In addition to that, we have spent a lot of time fixing issues from our software and website, and collecting analytics. Therefore, it’s too soon to collect any metrics. However, we’ve seen an increase in the specific things we are advertising. The items that we moved up the list on Google Ads are getting our website back up and running.
After all the analysis is done, I’m hoping to get to the point where we have fairly consistent and focused marketing plans that demonstrate what everything should look like going forward.
How did Welby Consulting perform from a project management standpoint?
We don’t use any project management tools because Grant is a full-time employee working on contracts. Our communication is either face-to-face or via email. Right now, we’re at the point where we start looking for a new project plan.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Welby Consulting’s breadth of knowledge is the most impressive about them. They understand data analytics and what that means for an organization. Their work is very detailed, precise, and informative— we’re figuring out at what point we should bring this into our own business practices.
Are there any areas they could improve?
We aren’t ready for the changes that Welby Consulting is proposing— it might be too much information for us. The investment, from a money and people perspective, required to get where we want to be are not what we want to spend at this point in time.
Any advice for potential customers?
The outcome of the partnership between the consultant and Welby Consulting has to be very clear. We weren’t ready for all the answers they gave us, and that should’ve been discussed up-front.

We’re a thread manufacturer and wholesaler. We have several types of specialty threads for hobby sewing, whether it’s quilting, doing embroidery, garment sewing, or anything in that scope. I’m the marketing director for the company.
What challenge were you trying to address with Welby Consulting?
We wanted help with our Google ranking. We hired them for advice on our SEO, as well, since we’d never really done e-commerce work before.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We created our website and they came on a few months later. At the time, it began with their team doing an SEO audit to see where we should change things. They worked with us to get our Google Analytics set up, along with our Google Ads and things like that.
They’ve done a bit of consulting, but they also help implement the campaigns and work, too. We send their team copy and creative to get their input on the wording and look for different channels. We do the same for our newsletters, too.

Between August and September, we did see our revenue increase by about 140% online, but we did a lot of things in-house, as well.
I did notice our presence on Google has helped us a lot. I’d say about 30% of total sales are coming from Google Ads, which we didn’t have before. I saw an increase in basket size sales and the average value for a cart, as well.

They’ve met my expectations in terms of communication. They are really clear. If I haven’t thought of something, Grant will send me ideas or things he’s found online, too. Throughout the week, we touch base through video conferencing or he’ll come into the office for a quick meeting. He’s been really easy to work with.

I like that he understands our needs and he works hard to meet our expectations. He is always coming up with new solutions to reach our goals. He’s taught our team a lot of different things, which has been helpful.

I honestly can’t think of anything right now for them to improve.

It’s important to know what your goals are when looking for these services. I was partially clear, but I’ve learned a lot more in working with him. You can’t just be broad about your goal, so make them defined and know how to measure them.
