Two years removed from a major social media fail, Sunshine Village really gets it. With 51,000 Facebook fans, 15,000 Twitter fans, 302,143 YouTube views, and 1,500 Google+ followers, Sunshine is doing a lot right. Any social media channel they are on, they optimize and use it to the fullest. And in all instances, Sunshine shows off its snow with

On Facebook, Sunshine posts often and uses lots of brochure-quality images, spanning across the entire newsfeed on their page. It uses eye-catching graphics and treats the page with the same care and attention that they would a glossy brochure. When not posting new images, the area posts videos—mini movies that seem carefully thought out, yet spontaneous at the same time. And the cover photo features a “Sunshiners of the Day.” Plus, the area takes advantage of every Facebook app space to promote or encourage a purchase. —S.R.

Sunshine Village 2011-2012 Ski Season

Company: Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort
Client: Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort
Features: Apps, Ads and Sponsored Stories, Pages
There is a large core of dedicated skiers and snowboarders aged 18-34 that use social media daily. This audience relies heavily on social media content and opinions from friends and brands to help decide their

ski holiday destinations. We saw this audience gave us the best opportunity to enhance awareness and engagement.

Starting January 2012, Sunshine Village Facebook ads were deployed to gain Page Likes. This was an essential component of the strategy to hit the fan goal. Sponsored stories were the best performing ads, which employed a word-of-mouth tactic encouraging friends-of-friends to like the Sunshine Village Resort Page. The initial ad campaign hit the market and began generating a significant jump in new fans, up to 300 per day at its peak, an explosive success.

Best Use Of Twitter: Sunshine Village

Source: http://www.saminfo.com/magazine/may-2012/best-worst-marketing-2011-2012

The resort now is among the leaders for both social engagement and growth—that’s quite a turnaround.

Sunshine got clobbered on Facebook in 2011, so it was heartening to see it learned its lesson well. Sunshine’s “Ski the day before we open” Twitter draw could only be won through participation, and as a result it had a very

strong viral component. From moments after the launch until the drawing of the 20 winners’ names, Sunshine was trending in Alberta on Twitter. Sunshine used the promotion to tout the Sunshine-Marmot discount cards, and invited media to join the winners. The end result was a huge jump in Twitter followers, 500 entries, a seven percent increase in Twitter followers and Facebook fans, a great news story for the media pre-season, and 20 advocates who had a fabulous first day. The resort now is among the leaders for both social engagement and growth—that’s quite a turnaround.—M.R.

Skipedia - Sunshine Village celebrate their Facebook fans in their Cover Photo

Source: http://www.skipedia.co.uk/2012/05/sunshine-village-celebrate-their-facebook-fans-instead-of-alienating-them/

It wasn’t so long ago that Sunshine Village were the villains. After their epic social media fail in January 2011, there was a large amount of negativity attached to the brand.

That certainly hasn’t all gone. The Support Ski Patrol wronged by Sunshine Village&nbsp

;Facebook page is still active and has almost 8000 fans.

However, where once Sunshine Village simply took their Facebook page down to prevent their fans ‘engaging’, now they are celebrating them.

Almost every day since March, they have been changing their Timeline Cover Photo to include the ‘Sunshiner of the Day’ – a great way to keep your fans engaged and feeling connected to the brand.

Sunshine rides web's social high

Sunshine can ride the web as well as the slopes and they now have the award to prove it.

Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort in the Canadian Rockies has been awarded the Best Use of Twitter award by the Ski Area Management Magazine.

The resort was also given special kudos for this season's Ski the Day Before We Open

Sweepstakes, which had Sunshine trending on Twitter.

"It is a great honour to be given this award by our peers," said John Scurfield, Sunshine Village Senior Vice President of Resort Operations, Sales and Marketing.

"We're very proud of what we've accomplished this season and how we've listened to our follower's suggestions to give them what they want. Thanks to our followers we opened up a second park and let them name it. We also named the features after the winners and the runners up."

As SAM staff point out, marketing has changed significantly since SAM inaugurated this annual review back in 2004.

SAM called on a diverse group of experts to evaluate a variety of different categories and Sunshine Village was for what they described as the solid engagement and growth they have displayed in Twitter.

In addition to the SAM award, Sunshine was also recognized by SlopeFillers in late December for the Best Ski Resort Twitter Campaign.

Sunshine Village Ski & Snowboard Resort in the Canadian Rockies has been handed another prestigious award, this time from Ski Area Management Magazine.

Sunshine Village won the Best Use of Twitter, and particular accolades were given for this season's new Ski the Day Before We Open Sweepstakes, which had Sunshine

trending in Alberta on Twitter.

"It is a great honour to be given this award by our peers," said John Scurfield, Sunshine VillageSenior Vice President of Resort Operations, Sales and Marketing. Sunshine Village appreciates and listens to social media fans by engaging every day with guests through Facebook, Twitter, photos, video, contests and many other channels.

Best & worst use of Facebook timeline image in the ski industry

Source: http://www.outandaboutmarketing.com/2012/04/best-and-worst-use-of-facebook-timeline-image-for-the-ski-industry/

Facebook latest redesign for brands provides ski resorts with a lot bigger space to showcase their resort in the timeline cover. Some good uses of the timeline cover include: snow reports uploaded daily, upcoming events, focus on night life or show village activities. I see a lot of creativity

from ski resorts and some really cool images are popping up on Facebook.

Below are my favs and an example of what not to do.

The best use of the Facebook timeline image in the ski industry comes from Sunshine Village Ski&Snowboard Resort from Banff (Alberta) Canada. Each day they feature a new image of a fan on their Timeline under the clever name Sunshiner of the Day.

Great way to put the spotlight on guests/fans, humanize the brand and encourage visits back to the Facebook page. A bit reminiscent of the photo of the day from your regular old website, it keeps content fresh and interest high.

Slopefillers Awards 2011: Best Ski Resort Twitter Campaign

To enter the contest, followers had to do two things: change their Twitter profile background to one of 4, contest-approved images and Tweet using the hashtag #WinSkiPassesB4OpeningDay. The winners got to enjoy a private ski experience the day before the resort opened. My first response to this promotion was initially excitement to see a unique award presented in a social, viral sphere. I felt it was lacking a few key elements,

but when I realized that everything – the idea, approval, contest, and award – all went down in the space of two weeks (actually less, see comments for details), I was very, very impressed. Twitter is full of white-noise promotions. Sunshine Village is trying things, being creative, and breaking through the clutter.

A few reasons why I felt this promotion deserved this award:
  • The award was incredibly unique
  • It was viral in nature, requiring sharing (this contest was trending in Calgary)
  • Ambitious implementation and upbeat voice running the show
  • Short time frame, new guy on the job, no fear to go for it

The results were impressive, nearly 500 entries, a 7% increase in both Twitter followers and Facebook fans in the space of a week, and lots of pre-season buzz. Their social media guy, Shawn Alain, has mentioned they may take the lessons of this season and apply them to next.

Viral in Nature delivered a high-quality website that looks fantastic and receives consistently positive feedback from its users. Thus far, the agency has also shown competency in social media management. They earned praise for their excellent project management and client-focused communication.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

We operate a bartering platform for businesses.

What is your position?

I am the founder.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Viral in Nature?

We worked on two projects with them: web design and social media management. For our website, we wanted something fresh and new in terms of rebranding the site. With social media management, we wanted to engage current followers and prospects while increasing educational awareness and attract new customers to our service.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

They did the front-end design work for the website. Maybe some back-end coding, but just basic work there. It was a bit of a combo of both with a focus on the front-end development. For social media management, they manage and engage our networks with posting a strategic management.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

Social Media management is $1,250 per month. The web design was $2,000 or $2,500.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together about two years ago. It is ongoing. They continue to maintain the website. With our social media, they continue to manage that monthly. We are quite happy working with them.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

How did Viral in Nature do from a project management standpoint?

On a 1-10 scale, I'd definitely give them a 10 for project management. They were really on top of their game. Whenever I had a question, they would get an answer back to me quickly. Working with them is great.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

The website, aesthetically, is great. Members within our own community and networks like the website. It's tough to get specific numbers on that outside of SEO [search engine optimization], which we sourced to a difference company.

In social media marketing, from when they started until now, they've increased our likes maybe to an additional 100. It's not substantial but it is steady. It's more a fact of keeping consistency with our message and continuing to put information out there.

What distinguishes Viral in Nature from other providers?

I really appreciate the high level of customer service. Viral in Nature is always prompt to get back to you on any issue. They're willing to hear and listen to what you have to say, such as what information needs to get pushed out. They'll also suggest some good ideas. I guess it's their creativity and strategic posting of content.
