A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CEO of Sleep Hack, a startup working in the supplement field. We're launching a sleep supplement for athletes that will hit the market next month.
What challenge were you trying to address with Square Digital?
Initially, I hired Square Digital to help us build out our website on a Shopify platform. I had purchased a theme, and I was looking for someone that could help me customize it and make it look professional and functional, but without doing a full build-up of a website, that would cost me a lot of money.
Furthermore, I had looked at a couple of media companies to help with our social media campaign and paid advertising before, and one had actually helped us out with it. They’ve done the branding and logo, but I wasn’t happy with them. The communication wasn’t good, and I started looking for other options, but none seemed to be a good fit since they were priced outside our budget. That’s when I decided to give Square Digital a try on the social side.
What was the scope of their involvement?
The initial agreement we had was that I would write the copy, then work together and decide on the imagery. After this, they’d build the rest of it. However, what ended up happening was we started working together on the strategy for the website. After my first couple of calls with them, I felt really positive about the direction we’d go on. Moreover, they really understood what we were trying to achieve with our website and what could work well for our business.
They had made suggestions around social media and growing our email with some integrations they could offer. I was doing some research myself on it, and they offered to help us roll out certain parts of our media campaigns that were compatible with the website. They’ve started helping through advising on what file sizing or product photography would be better with our future website updates.
Their insight was really appreciated, and we decided to have them work on that part of the project. Since then, Square Digital has taken care of our social media strategy, content creation, and instruments. They’ve put on some proposals that fit our startup budget, and they’ve run our Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts. Recently, they’ve started assisting us with some copywriting as well.
What is the team composition?
There are five people on their team I’ve interacted with. I'm currently working with a project manager. I’ve also been working with the content media strategist who mostly manages our Instagram. There’s another person in charge of the website and paid ad spend management. The press releases and research for our publications are taken care of by their content writer, who also works on the public relations outreach. Most recently, I've been doing some contract work with another member of Square Digital.
How did you come to work with Square Digital?
They were a referral through a friend of mine who also runs an e-commerce business. He’s someone I’ve known for a few years and advised me to contact Square Digital for what I was looking to accomplish. He thought we could be a good fit and introduced us.
How much have you invested with them?
Their pricing structure has been reasonable. At this point, we’ve spent between $10,000-$50,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working in January 2021, and it is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We are expanding our relationship month over month. We’ve just started building out a mailing list, and there’s already been faster growth than expected. We've had over a hundred people sign up for our mailer in the last few weeks, and our Facebook likes have tripled since I started working with them. This particular project has been interesting to me, mostly because most of our followers were friends and family when we first started working. Now, the vast majority of our followers on Facebook and Instagram have gone up, which we will focus on over the next weeks.
How did Square Digital perform from a project management standpoint?
Square Digital is very well-organized. They’ve created documents to track all of our financials and where’s everything going. They’ve also created documentation on their performance.
When it comes to our communication, we’ve had a weekly check-in, both through Zoom calls or email, but we try to keep it minimal. We have a shared client drive where we can add comments or any edits. We also have weekly reports from their team on our social media, involving the performance and advertising evolution.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I’m thrilled with the work Square Digital has done and the direction they’ve taken. I feel like they’re an extension of my team and that they’re pulling in the same path. I believe Square Digital cares about the success of my company and that they’re working in alignment with the vision we’ve laid out, which has been really refreshing.
With the first couple of companies that I tried working with, I felt very much like they were just like contractors who’d deliver and finish the project. With Square Digital, I feel they’re committed and actually want to see our company grow.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I can't think of any area that I’d wished they’ve done better. I’ve generally been fairly impressed with the quality of their work and the relationship we’ve built.
Any advice for potential customers?
Be honest about your goals and candid with your feedback because they are very receptive. At the beginning of our collaboration, I wasn’t making any suggestions for edits because I didn’t want to create more work for them, but it has grown into a more collaborative way, which has helped to make things quicker.
