Development for Web, Mobile and IoT

We offer professional services in software development, covering full product cycle, from basic assessment of technology, to implementation, and to deployment and support of the finished product.

Our engineers and managers were previously employed by huge corporations and small startups, so we have extensive experience in working with both.

US time zones are not a problem - we used to work with US clients.

Portfolio

Key clients:

startups, small and medium businesses.

Commercial Apache Hadoop Distribution

We've built a commercial Apache Hadoop Distribution for one of the Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to create an equivalent of Cloudera CDH with several added-value features:
drivers, profilers, compression codecs, etc.

It supported Hadoop services deployment and provisioning to a cluster up to 2000 nodes.
It contained System health monitoring, Performance profiler for workflow-driven

application
hotspot breakdown, HBase explorer, and provided Amazon EMR integration.

Production clusters have been deployed for multiple clients of our customer,
including AT&T, Cisco, HP, and China Mobile Communications Corporation.

Test Automation Framework

Сomplete testing platform, based on the Robot framework, tightly integrated
with Atlassian Bamboo and implemented in the customer’s QA pipeline.

Allows unifying testing processes across the corporation.
Also provides a tool for junior engineers to develop lots of autotests of good quality.

The platform became the customer’s internal standard for test automation.

Cloud Orchestration Platform

Enables complete deployment automation across infrastructure,
network, security and components of a product/application.

Supports AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Docker.

Travel Planner With Price and Availability Prediction

One stop marketplace where travel bloggers earn on their published adventures
while other travelers can build and book their trips based on these stories.

Under the hood it has constraint-driven planning engine combined with machine learning
technologies used for ticket price and hotel availability prediction.

Feedback summary:

Among one of the top engineering and development companies, Smart Design’s engineering team met extremely tight deadlines, had almost perfect project management, and provided innovative solutions.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO of a technology company that offers a wide range of services, from strategic IT investment analysis to IT operations.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Smart Design?

We needed engineering assistance building our cloud-based software product.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Our software product focuses on cloud DevOps, and Smart Design handled the engineering requirements—specifically architecture design and development. They were focused on cloud adaption, migration, operations, as well as end-to-end DevOps.

What is the team composition?

We worked with two primary engineers that helped us with product development.

How did you come to work with Smart Design?

Somebody that had worked with Smart Design in the past referred me to them. I’m glad I went with them because they are among the top three companies I’ve worked with in my career.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent a little more than $350,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in November 2016, and the work is still ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have any metrics to report, but I can say that they met every deadline and we had weekly, daily, and hourly project timelines.

How did Smart Design perform from a project management standpoint?

We generally handled the project management while Smart Design was involved in delivering architectural design and code. However, they were close to perfect in terms of team cooperation, communication, and meeting deadlines.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re excellent in meeting engineering requirements.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Their engineers are very focused on delivering technology, and because of that their communication can be lacking. Another stumbling block can sometimes be that English is not the first language for many of their engineers. That proved occasionally difficult in communication, especially technical communication.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I would recommend giving their engineers autonomy and the ability to make independent decisions. You’ll get more value if they’re enabled to think outside of the box and have the space to innovate and operate.

Feedback summary:

Internal teams can, now, better centralize and focus their QA efforts thanks to Smart Design’s efforts. Personable and straightforward, they were easy to work with and provided key input across multiple fields. They took a customer-oriented approach, melding seamlessly with the internal culture.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the former head of customer operations at Altisource, a service provider for the real estate and mortgage industries.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Smart Design?

At the time, Altisource had acquired 17 companies and was trying to integrate and centralize certain processes, including QA. Since each company came with their own QA practices and tools, we wanted to develop a custom automated testing platform that would help us consolidate this process. The platform needed to be cost-efficient and adaptable so that we could use it across multiple teams.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

When considering testing automation, it’s important to build a platform that can handle a wide range of QA tasks, from database and API validation to DevOps, mobile testing, and low-level tasks. We wanted an independent tool that would be compatible with Windows or Linux in addition to various frontend automation tools such as Selenium and Soho.

Smart Design aggregated our criteria to create a custom testing platform using the Robot Framework. The platform is a hybrid model that features both keyword- and data-driven modules. By integrating base keywords into the code, Smart Design made the tool more accessible for our QA team. We can now connect JMeter with the Robot Framework, allowing us to test performance across the board as well as UI automation performance.

What is the team composition?

Initially, they assigned a team of 10 to build the platform and help us use it. This included Robot Framework subject matter experts (SMEs) who helped us build our base of sophisticated keywords and showed us how to best use that tool, as well as advanced Robot Framework users who helped us quickly write automation scripts.

How did you come to work with Smart Design?

We sought full-cycle agencies that were capable of delivering a full product from scratch. Our previous CTO had worked with Smart Design before, so it made sense to contact them first. After talking to their CEO and co-founder, it was clear that they were extremely smart people. Their vision aligned with ours, and they were skilled, energetic, and honest. We felt comfortable moving forward with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $1 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

Their work lasted from April 2014–December 2017.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I typically ask my team to assess our third-party vendors, looking at how well they work with us and so forth. Without fail, Smart Design always came out on top. We gauged the platform’s level of code coverage, noting the number of issues that passed automation testing but failed in production in addition to the number of issues detected in production that could’ve been avoided by automation. All in all, they built a successful platform.

How did Smart Design perform from a project management standpoint?

Although they were an external contractor, it felt like they were an extension of our internal team. They were dedicated to our project’s success, working across time zones to support our teams in Romania, Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and India. Smart Design’s group was always available and worked long hours alongside us, even on the weekends and in the middle of the night. I had no problems managing them because they were so committed to the work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Unlike other vendors, Smart Design was willing to adapt their skills and tools to match what we were trying to do. They were invested in our project and aligned their success with ours. I also appreciated how friendly they were; it was fun to work with them, and they provided honest input.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Smart Design is too good to remain a small agency; they need to expand and take on bigger opportunities. I’d advise them to show the market what they can bring to the table; I’m sure organizations would be eager to work with such a great company.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Rather than focusing on a single task, look at the bigger picture and invest in that. In our case, we hired Smart Design to focus on automation but also knew that they understood best practices for architecture, coding, and more. By continuing to work with them and thinking about how they could help us across our entire organization, we got a lot of value out of the engagement.
