We designed this app for Pobeda - a Russian biggest low-cost airline company.

My Beeline

We are a large consumer electronics retail company. I was a project manager for our mobile application development.

What challenge were you trying to address with Redmadrobot?

We understood that the mobile area was rapidly growing, and wanted to cover all possible communication channels for our customers. We wanted to provide an opportunity for customers to communicate with the brand, and make purchases through mobile apps. We had a tight deadline of 5-6 months, in order to create a quality product suitable for our users.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Redmadrobot designed our mobile application, producing the entire customer experience and also provided development for iOS. Redmadrobot's involvement was end-to-end. We haven't developed an Android version because of an internal decision.

They also provided testing for the iOS application.

How did you come to work with Redmadrobot?

We conducted a research process, looking for vendors which could produce applications for multiple platforms. We made a shortlist of companies, including Redmadrobot, and provided requirements.

How much have you invested with Redmadrobot?

The project was reasonably priced, but I can't provide an exact figure.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Redmadrobot at the beginning of 2015, and concluded around Christmas time.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We are satisfied with Redmadrobot's quality of work. Because of a company decision to include additional product catalogs into the application, the first launch was limited to registered accounts. As such, I don't have any metrics for it.

How did Redmadrobot perform from a project management standpoint?

Redmadrobot listened to our requests as clients, and maintained the timeline. We wanted to launch the app before the holiday season in order to get additional sales. Redmadrobot was very proactive in terms of project management, and always reminded us that we had a lack of time, especially taking into account the app store specifics. Redmadrobot made sure that we met all necessary requirements in terms of design and user acceptance testing. This allowed us to launch the app before the vacation season.

What did you find most impressive about Redmadrobot?

We received a lot of attention from Redmadrobot's account manager in charge of retail projects, so we had excellent quality-of-code and deadlines.

Are there any areas Redmadrobot could improve?

We had some personality issues on Redmadrobot's side at the beginning of our project. As soon as their project manager was changed, the issues disappeared.

Beeline is one of the biggest telecommunication providers in Russia. We provide services for the B2B [business-to-business] and B2C [business-to-consumer] segments.

What is your position?

I am the chief digital officer. I am in charge of online communication channels for customers.

What business challenge were you trying to address with Redmadrobot?

We have developed a self-service tool for all our customers, designed to be more convenient than calling or visiting our shops. It was designed with B2C capabilities in mind, which are much more advanced from the application side and in regard to what can be done within an account.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

Redmadrobot developed our support tool for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. We are a very old firm and, as such, have many legacy systems that were never designed to work online or to fulfill the needs of our customers through the web. Redmadrobot have done a good job of working around these limitations, and interfacing the systems with the app's API [application programming interface].

The mobile applications are the only tools that were not designed by our internal staff. Redmadrobot have much more knowledge in designing mobile applications than us. We are trying to move part of this process to our internal team but, right now, it's not feasible because of the high amount of knowledge required.

How did you come to work with Redmadrobot?

Our selection process usually starts by contacting the top development companies, giving them tests and providing our specifications and the scope of our work to each one. We will select those who show the best results and work for the least money. Redmadrobot have proven to be the right company for us during the course of our last three selections.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

I cannot provide this information. The total effort for the app has amounted to thousands of hours of development time.

What is the status of this engagement?

The minimum viable product was launched in March 2014. Development took half a year. We're continuing to work with Redmadrobot on deploying new features for our customers, releasing updates every three weeks. The app will never step out of development mode.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

The application has been downloaded 16 million times so far, which is more significant given that only 35 percent of our customers use smartphones. At this moment, out of all the iPhones in our market, only 500,000 don't have the app installed. It is the most successful support tool of any telecommunications in Russia.

The app has a four-and-a-half star rating in the App Store, and four stars in Google Play. This is very high compared to our closest competitors, which are rated 3.8 stars. Any bad ratings are due to occasional problems with our IT [information technology] systems. They don't reflect faults of the applications themselves.

What distinguishes Redmadrobot from other providers?

Aside from development work, they're also helping us improve our internal resources. In other words, they're not only doing their job, but are also helping us do our jobs better. This makes Redmadrobot not only a developer, but also a real partner for us.

Is there anything Redmadrobot could have improved or done differently?

Testing initially took a long time because of their methodology of work. They've made huge improvements during the last year, building a QA [quality assurance] department for us in particular, which solved the issue.

It was for a laptop application. I know they do a lot of interactive projection work for mobile, and actually for any platform. They are very good with technology mixed with high-end design.

What was your process for selecting Redmadrobot with which to work?

I personally know one of the creative directors there. I always wanted to work with them, and I finally had a project with technology-oriented stuff that would be a good fit for them.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

It was between $50,000 and $200,000.

What is the current status of the project?

The project was finished in summer of 2012.

Are you satisfied with the work Redmadrobot did?

Yes. They actually did an enormous amount of work on pretty tight timelines. Everyone was happy. The client really liked how it turned out.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

They are very good in all new technologies. They’re always adopting new technologies first and are very innovative. For example, when the Google Glass became popular, they asked me to buy them the device just to run some tests before any clients tried to use this technology.

They’re always one step ahead of what’s happening in mobile and interactive. They’re the most innovative guys in this field in Russia.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

From my point of view, it was totally fine. I have no complaints when working with them.

What advice would you give a future client of theirs?

It’s probably a good thing to contact them as early as possible to discuss the project. Sometimes, an agency wants something, but they don’t really understand how it can be done or whether it can be done in an affordable manner. It’s better to contact them as early as possible to see if it’s doable or not. They’re always open to new ideas, and usually they give very good advice.

What was your goal for working with Redmadrobot?

We needed to produce a mobile application to collect the contacts of the people who are drinking our beverages. After we collect all the information, we can work with it in different ways. We had an idea, and I was thinking about creating a recommendation service, which can answer one simple question: What do you drink right now, and where to drink it?

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their work.

They decided to start by thinking about what my company really wanted and needed. Redmadrobot started to research what the key purpose of the application was, the audience of the application, what functionality is necessary, and do we really need to make all the functionality that was requested. 

They made a good design for the application. It took four or five months to prepare the first version of the application. We tested it to see if it worked well. Then, I decided to leave the company. The project was on hold then. 

As far as I know, the application didn’t reach the App Store. Not only because nobody was working with the application, but they also changed the law in Russia that prevented any digital activities from alcohol companies.

What was your process for selecting Redmadrobot with which to work?

I found out what companies were the leaders in our market, and Redmadrobot was one of the leaders at that time. They are already number one in Russia based on different key rankings. They decided not to make what I need. I’ve never worked with a company where in the first meeting, they told me they like my idea, but they didn’t like how I described it. 

Redmadrobot said to give them time, and they would make a beautiful presentation with a concise and simple description of what the application is made for, how it will work, and what the company will gain from it. That was one of the points that led us to Redmadrobot when we made our procurement decision.

Can you give a sense of the size of the initiative in dollar terms or a personnel work-hour figure?

It was about $20,000.

When was the work completed?

It was three or four years ago.

Are you satisfied with their performance?

I was not only satisfied, but all the top managers were really happy with the application, with the idea, with the production, and with the design. We were very upset when faced with this new law. I’ve recommended Redmadrobot to other companies.

Is there anything unique or special about Redmadrobot that really makes them stand out compared to other business partners?

The application was a surprise because other players on the market didn’t make as trendy as a design and application. We were very impressed with the design. They don’t just make what you want. They rethink what you really want. 

Redmadrobot tries to find out what the key objectives of the project are and only after that do they start with blueprints and some idea descriptions. One of their biggest strengths is the design process and interface process.

What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?

Redmadrobot is a company they must include in their search. I really recommend them to work with. I’m a huge fan of good interface and good design. I’m a big fan of people who are trying to make their things trendy and make things that people need.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

Three or four years ago, they were just starting to grow and the mobile market in Russia was just starting to grow. They didn’t have a lot of resources within the company, and they had to find some outsourced resources. Sometimes, they didn’t meet deadlines, so that was one of the disadvantages. Now, they are a big company with a staff of 50 to 70 people.

What was your goal in working with Redmadrobot?

Our original goal was to just revamp and update an app we already had. As it turned out, there were so many major flaws in the design of the app that we hired Redmadrobot to build a new app from scratch.

We gave Redmadrobot complete freedom on what needed to be done. As a result, they have rebuilt the app from scratch. Both design and business logic were revamped and taken care of.

What was your process in selecting Redmadrobot with which to work?

Redmadrobot had the kind of expertise in the mobile field that we didn’t have. We have a list of mobile developers here in Russia, and Redmadrobot has been at the top of the ratings for at least two years. We did look at a few other companies, but it didn’t take too long for us to realize that Redmadrobot would be best for this kind of job. They have developed a huge number of apps and their price was quite reasonable. Basically, we hired Redmadrobot because of their experience.

This was a really large project. We put in more than 2,000 man-hours and spent more than $150,000.

The project was completed six months ago. We still work with Redmadrobot not as developers, but as consultants. We have a really good ongoing relationship with them.

What was your goal in working with Redmadrobot?

A few years ago, we had a project for a European pharmaceutical company where we needed an interactive presentation for their sales force. They needed to have a system to show their presentation to various potential customers and to collect statistics. Also, they needed a mobile app, which they could use to plan their visits and look for the optimal way of getting from one doctor to another. The system, which Redmadrobot helped us develop, can show presentations and collect specific data on which slides were most effective.

They created everything from the architecture to the final look. They created the business logic of the system. They helped us identify the needs of the sales forces and the business needs of the marketing companies.

What was your process in selecting Redmadrobot with which to work?

We tried to find the best agency we could in Russia. We talked with at least 10 different companies. When we came to Redmadrobot, we saw that they had a more systematic and broader approach than the others. We were on the same wavelength, so we decided to partner with them. They gave us realistic timelines and helped us to set goals for our project.

Can you provide a ballpark figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

We’ve spent about two million rubles [approximately $32,500] working with Redmadrobot.

When was the project completed?

Within four months, we had successfully completed the product, and the sales forces were using it in their fieldwork.

What were the results of the project?

For us, it was a great project, because they helped us understand the scope of the work that we didn’t understand before. For the pharmaceutical companies that use the system, the project was very successful. Those companies still use the system, which shows its effectiveness. We also have information from one company that shows an increase of 40 percent in the sales force's work after the system was implemented. We still work with that company because Redmadrobot had done such a good job for us.

Is there anything unique about Redmadrobot that really makes them stand out compared to other companies?

I think the way they helped us analyze our goals was very effective. They really helped us understand what we were trying to do. They even helped us understand things we didn’t even know we needed.

What advice would you give a future client of theirs?

Do not over analyze your project. Just trust Redmadrobot to think things through with you.

We run a B2B [business-to-business] e-Commerce site where we facilitate bidding on various products and services. Our site has everything from raw materials like paper and steel to business services. Sellers come to our site to auction their services, and buyers bid against each other to win the best deals. We have the largest market share of all similar sites.

They borrowed heavily from our website when developing the back-end, but overall Redmadrobot was responsible for everything. The design was theirs, API [application program interface], and the iOS and Android development.

What was your process for selecting Redmadrobot with which to work?

The research was pretty simple at first. I talked to friends in the industry, and did research on Google. I made a short list of companies that interested us, and it was immediately clear that Redmadrobot was the best company on our list. We were very interested in working with them but, originally, we worried that we might not be able to afford it. When we met with them, however, they were very interested in our project, and we were able to come to an agreement quickly.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

In total, the project was probably a little under $100,000.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the results of the project?

The relationship started in February 2014 and is ongoing.

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

The iOS app was launched on September 13th and we have 4,500 downloads. The app is only available to our customers, of which there are about 50,000. The percentage of customers who have downloaded our app is about what we expected. We haven’t released the Android version yet as it’s still being tested [January 2015].

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

Their design expertise is phenomenal, and it was one of the main reasons we chose them. We had to project a professional image for our company, and their design of the application really helped in that. They’re reliable. If they say they’ll do something in a given time frame, they always do it.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

We had to manage our expectations when it comes to how long it takes to do something. I’m not sure we always take priority because of the projects they do for larger clients.

What was your goal for working with Redmadrobot?

We didn’t have a mobile app. So, our goal was very simple, we wanted to launch the bank’s first application.

Please describe the scope of their work.

They did mobile app development, as well as ATM and payment terminal design. The scope included everything you want to have for a transactional banking app. We took care of the back-end, and they did everything else. They didn’t do consulting for us. I believe they are capable of doing it, but we never asked them to. We had a really robust vision on our end. They developed the actual app, and they’ll be doing future apps we have in the pipeline for Android tablets and iPad.

We started working with them, and we were pretty happy with progress so went ahead and asked them to redesign the ATM screens as well, and payment terminals. About a year ago we decided that we were going to overhaul the whole user experience with our self-banking channels, ATMs, mobile, Web, and Internet banking. We never thought Redmadrobot was capable of doing anything beyond apps, but they executed pretty well with ATM design and payment terminal design as well.

What was your process for selecting Redmadrobot with which to work?

We wanted to move quickly. I’ve had previous experience with local studios, and we didn’t feel like we had the patience to work with large global studios. So, we chose who we thought was the best well-rounded. I was familiar with previous work they have done with other Russian companies. They’re based in Moscow near us, which is helpful.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

From the first meeting to the launch, it took us 10 months. I don’t have the work hours figure available. 

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the results of the project?

The relationship is ongoing. We are about to launch an Android app. We have just deployed the first iOS update, and another update is due before Christmas, then it’s Android tablets and iPad development for 2015.

Are you satisfied with their performance?

We are satisfied. From an endpoint user perspective, it feels and works just great. From an internal quality control standpoint, it’s also fairly robust. We have a great HP 45 core. It’s 100 percent, which is pretty excellent. We’re very happy with how they performed.

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

The current App Store rating is four stars. We haven’t starting promoting the app yet. We want to give it a few months because what we have right now is not fully functioning. The first month we had 3,500 unique users, and slightly above 1,500 active users.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

They’re great to work with. Every interaction is just great, from the account management team [and] the developers to the management. As professionals [and] as individuals, these people are just pleasant to work with. The project went very smoothly. It’s pretty nice working with them.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

Cost estimates is something they could improve. I don’t think we were the first bank they worked with, but we were among the first two or three, and I think they miscalculated the workload a little. At one point, they started doing more work than was rational for them for that contract. We took care of that issue. Again, it’s how they presented it, they underestimated the cost and workload.
