Glucose Level Monitoring App for Enhancing Connected Diabetes Pump Functioning

Our Client – manufacturer of innovative connected pumps for people with diabetes – needed an iOS/Android mobile app to support their gadget functioning and allow users to leverage the health tracking device to the fullest. The BLE-enabled app scans for a device, be it a Client’s pump or supported third party blood glucose meters, and gets paired with the help of a built-in camera, which scans a QR-code on the device. Once

connected, the app retrieves data from the pump - transmission payloads can be set at different intervals, varying from a few seconds to 5 minutes in between - and visualizes it in different types of graphs and reports. The app supports the alert / notification function: once the device generates and transmits it over the BLE protocol, the app notifies the user. The app is compliant with the strict HIPAA security standards and demonstrates smooth functioning and user-friendly interface, praised by the users of the App Store and Google Play.

Full-side Project Provisioning for a Smart Curtain System

Our client launched a crowdfunding campaign across the Web for their breakthrough innovation – a smart control kit called Slide which can be installed on any existing horizontal curtain to motorize it and make it smart. They selected R-Style Lab for our proven software engineering background and a reputation for selecting the best technology stack to get the maximum outcome. To make the Slide project go live and get pre-ordered
systems delivered to their first customers, R-Style Lab’s mission was to build the back-end server part of the solution. It would empower the following business logic: a user downloads the Slide app (iOS/Android), installs the purchased Slide systems and registers them via the app. From now on, the user can control their smart curtains with a smartphone and schedule curtains’ opening and closing. Taken the scope of the project, the main requirements set for the back-end server part were its extreme scalability, fast performance, and stable functioning. The chosen tech stack would guarantee zero downtime deployment and support the product’s future growth. Impressed by the quality of our team’s work and responsiveness, the client expanded an initial scope of work for us. Besides software development, we were assigned to improve and refactor the firmware part of the solution, making it function smoothly despite a growing number of users.

Smart Home Device Hub for Full-scale Configuration-less Home Automation

The client, one of the long-term partners of R-Style Lab and an electronics engineer with a line of its own smart home products, has turned to our team to get full-cycle assistance with custom software for its novel connected home solution. The final product is designed as a smart home device hub, but taken a step further. The solution will enable automated home management scenarios and will require no further administration from
a home owner. The product functionality is being gradually incremented with each iteration. The solution is capable of smartly adjusting ambience. The typical use case scenario is as follows - it brings room temperature to a comfort level by controlling multiple thermostats installed in a room, having received just a desired setpoint input from a user or having learnt their behavior over time. The solution automatically switches the lights on/off, adjusts color hues and its temperature, and makes other changes to the settings based on the collected data. The smart home automation system offers two configuration options: with a smart home device management controller installed locally; with smart home device ecosystem managed via a cloud. This option has no controller on the premises and sensor data is sent directly to the cloud for processing and device orchestration. The plan for the final release is to turn the system into a smart digital assistant, which will go beyond device performance automation to handle daily routines of home owners - from booking tickets to tracking their timetables to doing automated shopping via authorized partners.

Multi-level Cryo Unit Management Solution for Sensor Data Acquisition & Processing

The major goal of our client - a European digital health startup - was to provide faster sports recovery with the help of cryo units, installed in spa centers, gyms and other sports facilities. They approached R-Style Lab to develop its back-end part, which would provide their clients with a possibility to access, process and manage data gathered by the equipment. The Client came up with a prototype of a cryo chamber, equipped
with multiple sensors, and needed a back-end server part which would make it a perfectly manageable connected product. After thorough research and experimenting with different tech stacks, our team came up with a data acquisition and management system, capable of collecting, processing, and storing data retrieved from sensors installed in cryo units: - Cryo unit management system. - Remote control and management app for handheld devices (iOS / Android mobile phones and tablets). - B2B client management software. - White label management software for the company’s clientele. The cryo unit has been successfully launched on the market, receiving a positive feedback from clients for the system’s advanced data visualization, security and impeccable performance.

Bluetooth-enabled Solution for Traffic Monitoring

We created a custom Android Bluetooth/BLE-enabled application for a California-based transportation company that manufactures portable traffic detection devices and provides transport analytics services. R-Style Lab stood out from the competition through its well-prepared technical documentation,
implying the use of Drupal for the portal development, along with a clear vision of its functioning and further evolution.

Booking Portal Enhancement for a Major Travel Agency

Selected as a technology partner of the UK-based Premium Tours travel agency, R-Style Lab upgraded their corporate website, developed and implemented new back-end and front-end parts to support the Client’s brand and boost travel tours sales. To make the portal performance smooth and stable, the Client wanted R-Style Lab web application team to build a new front-end and back-end of the corporate website, while keeping the current
booking system intact. After assessing the Client’s needs – increased scalability and a higher processing and performance speed - we offered to migrate the portal to the microservice architecture instead of the client’s monolithic one. That was needed to reduce dependencies between the system's different elements and make the solution more configurable. Given R-Style Lab’s expertise in delivering reservation systems and booking software, we went for the Node.js/Express.js tech stack. This allowed our developers to ensure fast delivery of both static information and dynamic content to end users. Given an extremely high level of competition in the travel industry, we leveraged Angular 6 Universal to prerender webpages for search engine indexing and deliver a more SEO-friendly website. When the website development unfolded, the Client, impressed by our team’s expertise and business analytics skills, enhanced the project's initial scope. The new website features an intuitive user interface, seamless integration with the booking system, and smooth functioning under a high load.

Drupal Website & Custom CRM Software Upgrade for Office Space Rental Company

Our customer wanted to optimize the company’s workload by debugging the existing website and the associated CRM and by adding new functionality to the product. Here, at R-Style Lab, we offered a large-scale redesign of the website, without migrating to a new platform. Our client was not satisfied with his website’s functioning due to perpetually incurred multiple errors in the code, lack of essential functionality, and imperfect
custom written CRM performance. R-Style Lab team did more than just rewrote significant parts of the code. We implemented a full set of features for improving client service, reducing turnaround time and facilitating the full sales cycle: Contact form, which can now be easily associated with the property a potential client is interested in and, once stored in the CRM, gives a full picture of the client’s profile and his rental property preferences; Added maps, with up to 8 properties pinned on it, and active cursor containing brief description of each rental offer; New categories on the website, aimed at broadening the Customer’ s network of partners; Image slicing, which facilitates the process of adopting a downloaded image to the right size required by a chosen layout; SEO-optimization tools, like a clean XML map, structured meta tags for search form, and pagination hyperlinks, to make the website more search engine friendly. The re-launched version of the website boasts an advanced functionality-rich web interface and features a responsive mobile design, delivered in compliance with the Drupal best practices. As a result of R-Style Lab’s successful accomplishment of the project, the Customer is thinking about engaging our developers into its further development, first of all its mobile version launch.

R-Style Lab Corporate Website Migration to AWS

The R-Style Lab corporate website was previously hosted on GoDaddy. Despite the hosting’s reliability and robust functionality, the lack of Docker Virtualization — as well as the overheads associated with starting and maintaining virtual machines — prompted us to look for another cloud server solution. Having considered multiple options, we settled on an Amazon EC2 virtual machine and S3 buckets for storage. As our website uses
the LAMP stack, we deployed it via the AWS Elastic Beanstalk to achieve greater scalability and routed the incoming traffic through the Cloudflare network to optimize the delivery of web pages to our global customer base and mitigate DDoS attacks. Other tools and technologies we made use of include: Ansible (a top-notch IT engine for automatic application deployment, configuration management and cloud provisioning). Grafana (an advanced analytics platform that visualizes key website metrics, alerts the tech team on server downtime and automatically remediates system flaws). ELK stack (minus Kibana as Grafana turned to be a more flexible and cost-effective solution; the Elasticsearch engine allows us to secure data and enhance its availability, while Logstash facilitates data parsing and processing). Being a customer-centric company, the R-Style Lab team wanted to improve server response time and future-proof the website. Thanks to a detailed migration plan, optimum technology stack choice and strict adherence to cloud migration best practices, we managed to reduce response time from 2.1 seconds to just 0.4 seconds.

Exceeding all expectations, they delivered a high-quality and secure product on a tight deadline. Proactive and highly skilled, R-Style brought valuable ideas to the table,  while their ability to deliver on promises made them a true partner.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the CMO at a blockchain company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

We mostly focus on backend development, so we have an internal team of blockchain experts. But we are not capable of delivering frontend solutions, such as native mobile apps. We had a client who needed a frontend solution, so we were looking for a company to help us with that.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We were building a token based customer referral solution. It was essentially an education program. On the backend, the client wanted to have a transparent and reliable compensation model for referring new businesses and clients. They also wanted to do it on blockchain and to have internal currency or internal token.

We gave R-Style a high-level description of a frontend solution that we needed, but that was not a very formal or detailed software requirements specification. We asked R-Style to contribute their experience in order to come up with the final scope of work. It was a PHP-based solution and they used React on the frontend.

What is the team composition?

We worked with six members of their team: two PHP developers, two frontend developers, one QA person, and one project manager.

How did you come to work with them?

I did some projects with them when I worked for other companies, so we had a track record of success.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent between $100,000–$150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in September 2017 and it was completed in January 2018.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We had a tight timeline, but they delivered the product on time. Both our internal team and our client were happy with the quality of their code. When there were minor problems, R-Style was very responsive and fixed everything within a couple of days.

How did they perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very proactive and demonstrated their knowledge and skills. It was a Scrum-based project, so we had daily stand-ups and regular meetings. They also provided us with regular reports. We used Jira for task breaking and Confluence for collaboration.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Many companies claim that they have the available resources, but, in reality, they don't. R-Style was able to allocate the right team to the project and start working on it on a very short notice.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of anything.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Allow them to demonstrate their skills. If you want to hear some independent professional opinion about the project and the way it can be implemented, don't limit them with your own 100 pages of specs from the beginning.

The client submitted this review online.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I’m a co-founder of Amabella Invest LTD, a Cyprus-based start-up. We engaged R-Style Lab to develop a face-morphing iOS app called Glamozis which enhances selfies and performs complex facial transformations, replicating the results of a plastic surgery. I have many years of experience in the beauty industry and project management; the start-up’s other co-founder is a world-class plastic surgeon – and that’s how the idea for Glamozis was born.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what reason(s) did your company hire R-Style Lab?

We had an idea and the general vision of the Glamozis app and the backend behind it. Initially we were looking for 2 different agencies to handle UI/UX design and mobile and web development. Luckily for us, R-Style Lab is a full-cycle software development company, so we were able to complete the project in a single-vendor environment, saving time, effort and expenses associated with multi-team coordination.

What were your goals for this project?

Our main objective was to develop the iOS app and a promo web site for it. We wanted the app to appeal to our target market: girls and women taking selfie who would consider getting plastic surgery, so UI/UX design was a major concern. The development part of the project included the complete overhaul of the face-morphing library and its optimization for mobile devices.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We did thorough research and studied multiple developer ratings, including those on Clutch.co, and short-listed 10 companies. R-Style Lab was a perfect match; their proposal was the best, and they had experience with neural networks implementation and optimization on mobile devices. That’s what won us over since our key technical know-how is a unique face-recognition and morphing a library based on neural networks.

Describe the project in detail.

First of all, we needed to prepare project documentation and decide on the app design. We started with a requirement specification document and then focused on app mock-ups. That took us around a month. After that, the R-Style Lab team began rapid development and testing, which took another 3 months. The beta version of the app was released on time and within the agreed budget.
The app features a package of face-morphing effects and custom filters which perform complex facial transformations and enhance the pictures' overall quality. Now we collect and analyze user feedback and think of new features that would help us attract and retain users.

As I’ve already mentioned, we only had an idea and a general vision of the Glamozis app; the R-Style Lab team prepared project documentation, optimized the neural network library, created custom filters and developed the features supporting app monetization. As a product owner, I mostly focused on app design and overall performance. During the development process, I made frequent trips to Minsk to be more hands-on with the project and met the team members in person.

What was the team composition?

We employed 2 senior iOS developers full-time, as well as 1 UI/UX designer, 1 project manager and 1 QA developer part-time. The size of the team remained intact during the entire development process.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We launched the Glamozis app on the App Store, and it performs all intended functions. The response has been awesome so far. It’s a bit hard to tell where we will go with the project right now, because we only launched the beta version of the app, and now we are going to add more important features to the scope.

Most of our users are happy with the app design and the face morphing algorithms’ performance. Now we are considering different monetization models; I think we are on the way to success.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

They did an amazing job. I have a lot of experience in managing projects, and they follow project management best practices. All the milestones were delivered in time.During the UI/UX phase and beta-version release, I was a frequent visitor at their office; the team was very friendly and always ready to help. I had many technical questions and Pavel Shylenok [CTO, R-Style Lab] always had a simple explanation up his sleeve. We had a dedicated project manager who did well, too. The team worked in sync - and that’s what made Glamozis a success.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their approach was very impressive; in fact, we felt like they are part of our own team, not just a vendor. I have worked with 3rd-party vendors for 15 years and they are the best one I've come across. R-Style Lab even helped us with a basic marketing strategy although this is not the kind of services they normally provide. They were always looking for the best technology solution possible. As an example, we had issues with our face-morphing library performance on iOS, and the R-Style Lab team managed to make it work 10 times faster, which was magic.

Are there any areas for improvement?

They’ve done fine. I might like to have more time from their senior developers, but I understand that Glamozis is only one of the projects they’re working on.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the founder and CEO an educational event company. We’re a premier educational advisory institute dedicated to executive thought leadership exchange, business transformation, and technology innovation.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

We wanted a unique event management solution in the form of iOS and Android apps. We have a website which we’ve developed with our own resources, but we decided to outsource these mobile apps because we wanted them to be made as fast as possible.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

R-Style Lab already has this customizable event management platform which simplifies the development process. They presented the features their platform already had, we added some features of our own, and they built our app in just 3 weeks.

The platform they built has two user bases, event organizers, and event attendees. For organizers, they have a full-scale administrative panel, VIP access setup and personalization, social network integration, a central notification channel, and a modular architecture so only necessary functions are present for every event. They can also market the events through the app.

For attendees using the app, they can access the event schedule, create their own personalized schedule, and see various information like lists of speakers, sponsors, latest news, session materials, and floor plans.

They used PHP for the backend since the corporate website is on WordPress.

What is the team dynamic?

We had 1 iOS developer, 1 Android developer, 1 PHP developer, 1 project manager, and 1 QA. They took care of everything; I did not want involvement. They were excellent.

We had this project manager who knew her job inside and out. She managed the processes so smoothly; we had no issues or shortcomings, all we had to do was accept the completed work.

We had minimal involvement in the tech process, which was convenient since the project is not that complicated and we really wanted to get the result fast.

How did you come to work with R-Style Lab?

One of my VPs sourced them.

How much have you invested with them?

Both apps and the integration with our website cost us $15,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started in June of 2017 and finished 3-weeks later in July.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The fact that the project was delivered so soon and there were no problems or complications throughout the project lifecycle says a lot about the quality of their work. They were proactive, although we did have our requirements laid out for them and knew exactly what we wanted to get. This made everything happen so quickly, simply and smoothly.

They seem to be really engaged in the projects they do. They’re willing to help, so you may define the requirements on the way with their help. It’s just going to take more time.

How did R-Style Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

They were really proficient and the communication was smooth and simple despite different time zones.

We had one main point of contact—a project manager who was there any time we had any questions. The team involved in the project was relatively small. It was easy to work with them because they all knew exactly what to do, and our project manager managed all the tasks and questions smoothly.

It was important for us to have apps ready as fast as possible; that’s why we chose their platform in the first place. In 3 weeks everything was ready, which is a great timing.

We primarily used email and Skype to communicate, as well as phone calls when necessary.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve never tried to outsource anything before and were a bit intimidated, but our experience with R-Style Lab was so pleasant and efficient that we’re planning to continue our partnership.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Based on the experience we’ve had with them so far, they don’t really need to improve. We’re planning to continue working with R-Style Lab in the future actually, so maybe we’ll see some shortcomings when we have long-term projects.

Advice for potential customers?

Have requirements ready for them.

Efficient communication, prompt bug fixing, and timely delivery despite changes in scope characterize R-Style Lab. Their quality of the work is high compared to its cost, making them a valuable partner that surpasses several U.K. and U.S. firms. They could provide more thorough testing, though.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder of a software platform company that manages PPC [pay-per-click] for travel companies. We’re a marketing platform targeting Google AdWords and the Bing Ads API.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

We needed help building the platform and contacted multiple companies from the U.S. and Europe, looking for a partner with experience in working with the AdWords analytics and Bing APIs.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I had written the algorithm document before our initial briefing, but we were basically starting from scratch. I provided a bit more detail during the first stages, showing the role of the algorithm as well as the interface of the software. We also had a dashboard design in place before engaging with them.

I conveyed my vision around the functionalities we needed in order to plug into the AdWords and Bing Ads API and into our client’s account. The platform would download all the data from those APIs on a daily basis, recommend changes on thousands of different keywords based on an algorithm, and send that data back to the ad platforms. We perform thousands of changes per day through the dashboard. Everything was custom coded using Laravel PHP.

What is the team dynamic?

We worked with a product owner from their side who answered my emails and made sure that everything I needed was in place. I also dealt with 2 – 3 developers, either directly or indirectly, through emails as well as with their business development manager, who was constantly involved with scope changes. He made sure that the necessary work hours were within our budget.

How did you come to work with R-Style Lab?

We found few companies online with experience in our technology, but R-Style had done a similar project in the past, which is one of the main reasons for picking them. They had much better value for money compared to the U.S. and U.K. companies we looked at.

How much have you invested with them?

The cost of their work has been above $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in February 2016, after first engaging with the group in December 2015. The platform has been in beta testing for 7 – 8 months and we’re getting ready to launch in a week. It took us a year to go through the documentation and development.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve worked with a number of development companies in the past. Everything we asked for seemed to work straight away with R-Style Lab. If there were any bugs, they were fixed within a few days. Many of the other companies we used struggled to fix some of the bugs, especially with projects using complex algorithms.

How did R-Style Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

Our project manager has been in constant contact with us and replies to emails within a day, sometimes outside of working hours. She makes sure that anything urgent is done straight away. They’re fast at turning new functionalities around and at providing quotes. They’ve offered to use project management tools, but I prefer email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

For the money we’re spending, the quality of development is very good. They’re better than some of the U.K. developers we’ve used, at a 4 – 5 times lower price.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There have been bugs which were overlooked. They’re not always easy to spot, especially since I have the live accounts, but it would be nice for them to do more testing.

R-Style successfully met strict deadlines while navigating shifting demands. They're cost-effective and flexible in terms of communication, and bring a depth of knowledge that helps streamline productivity.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

We’re a customer engagement agency that provides a wide range of insights to clients, including digital, print, CRM, data, and strategy. As technical director, my team specializes in interactive and digital projects, and we partner with development companies to provide technical solutions to complex projects, including large-scale website builds, mobile app development, setting up and integrating CRM systems, and designing chatbots for Facebook.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style?

It’s impossible to maintain in-house services for every technical need our clients may have and we’ve partnered with R-Style on a number of projects. They most recently created a website to launch a global campaign across multiple markets for our client. We’ve also hired them to develop an interactive storybook app as part of an in-house project.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We first worked with R-Style to develop an interactive storybook application for iOS. Centered on a Halloween theme, the app incorporates animation and allows users to fill out a form that personalizes the story’s details.

The campaign website was our most recent collaboration together, which focused on a global community of localized change-makers. The website needed to feature a variety of videos highlighting these stories, as well as social media content from Instagram and YouTube. We designed the site in-house and then passed our assets and requirements to R-Style, who built the site using WordPress.

We tested the product through each development phase and then navigated a complicated release process, shifting the source code to the client’s repository.

What is the team dynamic?

R-Style worked alongside our in-house teams. We’ve worked and communicated directly with the same project managers across multiple client engagements. We also had the same developers throughout the duration of individual efforts, but we communicated with them often only to discuss complex technical requirements.

How did you come to work with R-Style?

Because we partner with a variety of suppliers, I’m constantly on the lookout for new ones that might prove reliable. The timing was right when R-Style was referred to me by a colleague. I then browsed their website to explore the services offered. They seemed like a good match, so we decided to use the storybook app as a test project.

We're also accredited with ISO 27001, and part of that certification requires us to consider a vendor’s ability to manage information security. R-Style has considerable experience in this area, which made them even more appealing to us.

How much have you invested with them?

Between $200,000–500,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The relationship started about three years ago and is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have data to point to, but in terms of the website, the client was satisfied with the work.

While developing the app, the R-Style team team helped us understand how to bring the product to life. They helped us save time and production expenses by using existing frameworks, and their experience in launching mobile apps proved helpful when it came time to submit our storybook project to the App Store.

How did R-Style perform from a project management standpoint?

Since our vendors coordinate with our in-house teams all around the globe, we rely on a high level of communication and use a number of different platforms. We use Basecamp for most project communication and documentation, Jira Agile for bug tracking, and Slack for direct messaging. We also use a variety of conferencing programs, including Google Hangouts, Skype, WeChat, and WebEx. R-Style has always been flexible accommodated these needs.

They’re generally very responsive to questions about project delivery. Responses to non-project related queries could take longer, but not unacceptably long.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're on the cost-effective end of the scale. We work with other suppliers who provide similar services but aren’t as affordable.

They also work well under pressure, as both projects had strict deadlines. The website needed to be completed in less than four weeks, and R-Style delivered despite the shifting demands of our end client. They also proved willing to work overtime in order to meet a last-minute change.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't find fault with what they do. If we weren't happy with the quality, we'd stop working with them. When it comes to working with suppliers, you need to look at the whole package. Some companies might offer low prices, but then provide an unacceptable quality. From communications to quality of work to cost, R-Style is the whole package.

R-Style were responsive partners who led the project from the initial design ideas to a functioning final product, which is soon-to-launch, showing a good understanding of the vision behind the product. The small team communicated primarily through email, maintaining good contact despite the time distance.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the co-owner of a technology-based restaurant business which centers around a mobile application and website. We have a trademark on the software and our name. Our scheduled opening is 2018, so we have a small team of under 15 people.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Labs?

We had a one-off project for the creation of the app, which would then form the backbone of the business.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We used R-Style Labs’ services extensively from day one. They worked on everything from the artistic design, for example, a logo, all the way to technical details like code writing. We worked in collaboration with R-Style Labs to determine the app’s features. The app runs on Android and iOS.

What is the team dynamic?

The collaboration began with the business development manager, Yury Kovkhuto. He handed the project off to Pavel Shylenok, their CTO, and Natalia Osipchik, one of their developers, who were great in terms of communication on updates and creative changes.

How did you come to work with R-Style?

I did a bit of online research, and also I followed up with companies R-Style Labs had worked with before. They all gave similar positive feedback, and I liked the fact that R-Style had headquarters in San Francisco. They offered to meet me if I wanted a face-to-face consultation, but since the project is for a mobile app, and everything is digital nowadays, I decided it was unnecessary.

How much have you invested with them?

R-Style Labs’ work has had a cost of $76,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in August 2016 and concluded the project around the beginning of 2017.

The phase we initially signed them on to do is complete, however, mostly due to real estate availability, there have been several small modifications we’ve had to make. We want to keep the menu fresh and ensure that it looked right. It will be finalized at the end of 2017 — we have fewer than 60 hours left with R-Style.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I can’t mention website hits or download since we haven’t gone live on Android or iOS. I am happy, and so is the other owner, but, as far as real performance metrics go, they remain to be seen. We haven’t experienced any problems such as crashing. There were a few issues, but they were more on the web hosting side; rather than with R-Style’s work.

How did R-Style Labs perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re in Belarus, so I was initially worried about the language barrier, but I didn’t encounter one.

Our first call was through FaceTime. R-Style asked if we wanted to use Skype regularly, but I’m not a big videoconferencing person. If I can see information written out, I’m fine. It was my prerogative to go with email, and they were very responsive. Even with the six or seven-hour time zone difference, I always had a response from them within 24 or 48 hours.

For example, if I wanted to change the way a menu looked, wanted to see less color, or wanted more user-friendly interfaces, then within 24–48 hours, I would receive a response and mockups of several variations on whatever I as requesting. I felt they were dedicated to us, and, in terms of pricing and other details, everything was laid out upfront before any modification occurred.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We basically took the app from the drawing board all the way to a final product. I didn’t think R-Style would understand our vision, but they did. I’ve experienced explaining the product to trademark lawyers, and, compared to them, R-Style simply understood. It may be because Pavel is closer to our target market, but, regardless, I’m happy with this.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I would like to have seen some examples of work R-Style had done, but I know some of it is proprietary. There’s nothing I could think of, really.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

I would suggest working with Pavel as a designer, and Natalia. They’re the team I worked with, and they were great. I definitely would recommend R-Style. We’re using them again, which should speak for itself.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Okun Enterprises is a medical marijuana dispensary providing deliveries in Southern California. I am in charge of our mobile app development. I help develop the prototypes for our mobile apps.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

We needed a web API built for the mobile apps so that our clients could use their mobile devices for deliveries.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They redesigned our website and put it on WordPress. They then built a web API for the mobile apps and helped develop the apps in Objective-C and Java. I told them I would review the code, make sure everything worked properly, and deal with any small app issues once the apps were delivered.

R-Style Lab is also familiar with Swift and PHP. They have a lot of developers that are familiar with a lot of different languages which is nice. It’s one of the reasons I liked working with them. If there was something I didn’t know, I could reach out to one of their developers for help.

What is the team dynamic?

I worked mostly with the project manager, Anastasiya. I also worked as a project manager with them and was in direct contact Nikita [Director of Business] to make sure R-Style received our payments when they were due.

How did you come to work with R-Style Lab?

I had previously worked closely with them at another company, and I always liked their work. I recommended them to my boss and he decided to hire them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $45,000 and $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the project in March 2017, and the project was completed in June 2017. We went live with the website and the iOS app on September 1, 2017, and the Android app on September 25, 2017.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We were able to increase our revenue with the work they did.

How did R-Style Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

They finished the project way ahead of schedule. I estimated them finishing around August 2017 and they finished by June 2017. They were very communicative with me. We talked on a daily basis. When we had immediate requests, they gave proper estimates and scope of time for those features to be implemented.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their ability to work inside our company's budget without removing features was impressive. They were very committed to meeting deadlines. If they were unsure they couldn't meed a deadline, they immediately reached out to me and communicated why.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t believe so.

R-Style Lab proved to be extremely proactive, honest, and entrepreneurial in their approach, with engineers who became a part of the client’s team. They were also recognized for their openness, hard work, and commitment to deliver the demo.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

We are a startup company. I am the Chief Executive Officer of the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

We needed to run a quick, experimental prototype which involved complicated algorithms related to machine vision.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

R-Style Lab developed an algorithm which involved a decent chunk of coding. Given that we have a patent pending, any disclosures regarding technology would not work in our favor.

R-Style Lab proved to be extremely proactive and entrepreneurial in their approach, involving their key engineer in the process. Our project was riddled with various hardware failures, but R-Style Lab was proactive in solving those problems and delivering the work.

R-Style Lab had a team of 6-8 people working for us, with different skillsets. Their main contact acted as the CTO for this project.

How did you come to work with R-Style Lab?

My partner recommended looking at companies in Belarus, given that he had worked with a provider there. I read about the IT sector there, and given that I'm Russian, there would be no language or cultural barriers, as opposed to contracting a company from China or India. I liked R-Style Lab's approach; they're extremely honest and open in negotiating. From the very beginning, instead of dealing with sales people, we sat down with engineers and discussed the project. R-Style Lab's team came up with different ideas, which is what entrepreneurs in our position want to see. I visited around 5 companies in Minsk, but R-Style Lab's approach appealed to me most, because of the initial contact with our engineers.

How much have you invested with R-Style Lab?

The total cost of our project with R-Style Lab was above $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our project ran for 10 months. The first phase has been completed, and we're doing fundraising for the next one. Things are open at the moment, but we will continue working with R-Style Lab.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We're still in the early stages, and don't have any clients yet. R-Style Lab has built a lot of expertise on my product, and I plan to keep them involved. I only have positive feedback for the demo version which we've received. It will be essential for our next round of fundraising.

How did R-Style Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

The project was experimental even beyond a typical R&D [research and development] engagement. I was involved in project management extensively, given that questions were raised all the time, and they needed to be answered by myself. R-Style Lab is very organized, but I had to stay involved from a directional point of view.

Belarus is not an easy country to deal with in terms of shipping hardware. I've visited R-Style Lab at least twice a month, delivering devices myself, in order to ensure that they wouldn't be stuck in customs.

What did you find most impressive about R-Style Lab?

My experience with outsourcing has been quite bad, particularly with UK companies. I would not recommend outsourcing to anyone who really cares about their product. R-Style Lab has been the exception, offering dedicated engineers who got involved to the point of becoming a part of our team.

Are there any areas R-Style Lab could improve?

There are many things which could have been done differently, but R&D is a difficult process. I wouldn't put the blame on R-Style Lab for anything that went wrong. Hardware fails all the time, and doesn't work as described. From a quality point of view, I've seen perfect dedication and commitment from R-Style Lab.

R-Style Lab has finite resources, with only one lead engineer who is split between different projects. From the first moment of meeting that person, I wanted him to be on my payroll, but that wasn't possible, unfortunately.

What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with R-Style Lab?

Startups are adaptable by nature, but bigger clients will require a bit of flexibility on both sides. A Western company will also have a difference in mentality, and will expect a level of service which is standard in the UK, for example. The most important point is that R-Style Lab can deliver on their promises, and are a hardworking team. They will also allow clients to save money, compared to the rates in the Western world.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

Our company offers consultative and support services for the financial community. We specialize in different types of projects ranging from physical network administration to software development. Our main client base is composed of hedge funds, traders, infrastructure vendors, data vendors, and other types of companies, which we help with infrastructure management.

What is your position?

I am the founder and CEO of the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

Our business model involves offering services using our internal staff. We had difficulties in keeping track of how many people are working on specific projects due to the large number of assignments we had operating on a support and development level. We needed to make sure that we had enough resources available in case something went wrong, requiring more of our attention. We couldn't have too many full-time resources at any one time because of the extra cost involved, and we couldn't have too few resources because then we would not be able to offer support for emergency cases in time. There was a need for balance and we needed to know where each person is situated, what they're doing, and what they will be doing within the next day, week, or month. At the end of the day, we had to bill our clients based on this information. This was an ongoing problem that needed to be solved.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement.

We wanted to develop a solution in-house, given that we have the necessary capacity. R-Style Lab came up with a very reasonable plan in terms of budget and were able to pull off our solution. They were a good alternative to spending money in-house, proving to be cheaper, more reliable, more predictable, and giving us what we needed. Actually, their solution turned out to be overkill. We didn't manage to use up all of it. They exceeded our expectations in many respects.

We didn't want to focus on one technology or another. We simply wanted it to work. We settled on a Java solution because it could work within any environment, including Linux, Microsoft, or MySQL servers.

How did you come to work with R-Style Lab?

The only real competitor to R-Style Lab was our own production department. Their company is known within the financial sector. I knew that R-Style Lab had developed systems for banks in Eastern Europe, for example, where they are very popular. I ran into their team on many occasions, including conferences, so I knew some of their staff. I'd had a conversation with their project manager and found out that they were already working on a similar project for another client. It was a sort of time management solution.

We were trying to figure out what would be best for us between developing everything in-house and being done with it, sacrificing a year's worth of resources in the process, or simply having someone else solve that problem for us. It seemed that R-Style Lab was able to offer a meaningful short-term solution without reinventing the wheel. We weren't trying to implement something that was brand new. We just needed a very specific, business-oriented solution for our business problem. An offshore agreement in which we'd have to manage the external team and develop requirements was not something that we had time for. We needed a quick fix, and it seemed that R-Style Lab would be able to help since they had the necessary expertise, resources, and capability.

I didn't want to launch a bidding process because we didn't want to deal with various offshore companies and have to explain every part of our requirements to them, leading to misunderstandings. R-Style Lab offered us a solution, and we accepted it. I liked what they proposed in terms of the business solution and budget, so we went ahead and did it.

What is the status of this engagement?

The work was completed two years ago. We had a one-time project with R-Style Lab, which worked out very well. We're not developing anything else at the moment since our problem was fixed, and we're not a development shop.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Our business solution improved in terms of visibility, scheduling, and how much time is spent on each client. We wanted to make sure that we would be getting paid according to the work being made.

R-Style Lab's solution works. It's quality and scope was actually an overkill for us. It's strictly an internal-use tool, so it's not something that our clients will ever see. It would have been fine if R-Style Lab had delivered something less impressive. It's a professional tool that would have turned out much nastier and less user-friendly had we done it ourselves. It wasn't a strict requirement, but R-Style Lab delivered something that was of much higher quality than we were expecting. We didn't simply receive some code, but also support, usability, and documentation. Chances were we would be getting much more than expected, which happened in our case. I'm glad that it turned out like this because the other way around would have been bad.

They provided us ample documentation as well, including a systems guide. We don't need it, but we received this as a bonus.

How did R-Style Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

We don't want to micromanage everybody. Normally, when working in a software development project, there is a daily need to oversee what's going on. What made the difference when it came to working with R-Style Lab was that they knew what we wanted and had already worked on something like this in the past. We didn't have to explain everything to them in great detail, but simply told them what we were trying to fix, the basic objectives. The hours needed to match our invoices. That was our goal, and it needed to be addressed. We didn't want to get involved in designing a database structure, creating application screenshots or anything else. R-Style Lab took our business requirements and figured out all the rest. In this case, it's more like a business solution than a technical one. It was a business improvement project.

What distinguishes R-Style Lab from other providers?

I know from my experience that it's difficult to work on projects of this kind with pure software development vendors. They know how to code, but that's not enough. This is the reason why we didn't contact any competing companies. We were buying something that would get us from point A to point B and wanted it built for us.

Is there anything R-Style Lab could have improved or done differently?

We didn't run into any serious issues. There wasn't a chance for us to encounter consistent problems that would need to be fixed at the management level, so I have no issues in this sense, neither do I have any problems with R-Style Lab technology-wise.

They are not cheap, but the reason for this is that they handle more than simply coding. They're also not prohibitively expensive. I understand and respect this approach.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

We're an IT [information technology] company combined with a design company. We offer graphic design, print, logos, and stuff like that, and we develop websites and mobile apps for Apple and Android devices. We also work on bigger applications used in hospitals and such. We do both IT and design.

What is your position?

I'm a project manager.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with R-Style Lab?

The original project was to develop a new website for one of our own clients. At this point, we've developed several different websites with them. Our IT guys have been very busy and, as a result, we decided to find a partner to increase our development capacity. It was going to be a better solution than trying to find full-time resources.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in more detail.

We handled the visual design of the websites, and R-Style handled the functional development. All the sites that we built together were built using WordPress. I've only worked with their project manager who then delegates and oversees the developers working on our site.

How did you come to work with R-Style Lab?

My boss took care of that process. I think they contacted us out of the blue. We checked them out, and it looked like they could be a good fit. We tried them for an initial, small project, which went fine, so we just stuck with them.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

I think they've done three websites for us, and they were about $1,500 to $2,000 each.

What is the status of this engagement?

We continue using their services.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We've had mostly positive feedback from our own clients. We had some trouble with the latest page, but that wasn't really related to their work. It's hard to quantify their efforts and success because they're collaborating on the same project as our own team. There would be no way to tell if the success or improvements came from our work or theirs, exclusively. I can tell you that we haven't had any real issues with defects or delayed work. I think they're very well disciplined when it comes to delivery.

How did R-Style Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

I think they work very well, and the project manager I work with is very talented and reliable. She always keeps me updated, and checks to make sure everything's all right. She's on point and very good. We didn't use any specific project management tools, but she nonetheless kept me updated throughout the process.

Is there anything R-Style Lab could have improved or done differently?

For the latest website, we had trouble because their server went down and they lost the entire page. They had to build it out again in two days, and that did cause some anxiety. That was one thing we thought was a little weird, being a big company and not having a backup. However, it was a big web page that we lost, and they managed to deliver it again in just two days, which was very impressive.
