Please describe your company and your position there.
I'm the product manager of the website of a company that sells custom orthotics online, direct to consumer. Upstep specializes in the design and manufacture of custom foot orthotics and foot care solutions.
For what projects/services did your company hire PURPLE, and what were your goals?
When the company was founded, 6 years ago we built it over Magento. When the time has passed and our requests become more and more complex we have started to think about building a custom website. We wished to give the users and our customers a unique experience that will be tailored to their needs. We are not just selling clothes or shoes, we are selling custom-made orthotics and we want to create a custom-made flow for our users. We hired PURPLE in order to achieve the most we can get.
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
We have chosen PURPLE over other vendors mainly because of their proven experience with unique and complex languages. PURPLE is a one-stop-shop with a passionate IT team with the ability to deliver high-quality solutions in no time and at the highest levels.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
We had a kickoff meeting where we shared our visions, must-haves, and nice to have dreams. We talked about the pros and cons of our experience working over Magento and shared what both sides believe the workflows should be. PURPLE delivered the wireframes of the site and the admin panel which we then approved.
After a few iterations (if needed) PURPL team designed and created the HTML, QAing it, developed the logic, reviewed the code, and deployed it on production. Since the beginning, our working methodology has changed dramatically, we are working on a roadmap with weekly scopes. We developed tens of features, complex integrations, and unique APIs. The company grew dramatically thanks to PURPL because of its loyal team, guidance, and dedication throughout the way.
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
- A project manager who is the main contact person through the day to day
- 1 frontend developer who is responsible for all HTML files
- 1-5 backend developers - depending on the times and needs
- 1 IT expert who is available to advise at any time and in charge for privacy and storage
- 1-2 UI/UX designers
- 1 QA manager
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
Right after launching our new site with PURPL, we saw a 30% increase in conversion rate, customer and users tend to rate the site as more friendly and easy to navigate. We are now available to offer our users a diversity of payment options and an easy-to-follow checkout process.
We see more organic traffic thanks to the dev work with the right SEO structure and an amazing site speed loading. We created an easy log-in area for returning customers that enables an effortless reorder process that increases retention dramatically by 60%.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.
We are communicating via Asana, Slack, GitHub, etc. Daily calls and weekly meetings for keeping priorities up to date. We are making zoom calls with the dev team to keep all on the same page. Delays are part of the work but we know how to estimate tasks in a way it will help us decrease surprises in timelines.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
A lot of experience with complex projects and their knowledge about new and relevant features. They are available 24/7 and that is a huge advantage.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
Not anything I can think about, they were flawless from day one.

Software Dev & Implementation for Automotive Company
"Purple showed tremendous understanding and customer support to all the stakeholders from ADI."
the reviewer
the review
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
ADI System is the biggest vehicle integrator in Israel, as we do all the vehicle customization for the Israeli vehicle market. The market also has a lot of customer regulations that we manage. Let's say a vehicle buyer gets their car, and they have to get customized regulation that isn’t being done by the manufacturer, for example, Chevrolet.
ADI does all the customization and also brings all of the technology that the regulation would require — such as safety, entertainment, anti-theft, and so on. The company is about 3 years in the business, and we have more than 50–55% of the market share.
At ADI, I used to be the head of innovation and the manager, basically onboarding new products and technology.
What challenge were you trying to address with Purple?
We hired Purple to develop software for advanced driver safety. The Minister of Transportation demands vehicles from a certain age to have that technology in cars to get tax benefits, and for drivers to promote safety on the road.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Basically, we had to do the regulation requirement with a visibility and data transparency software for the Ministry of Transportation office. We also had to build a live online installation software, which connects to an API or to the actual device when installed in the car. Once installed, it will then transmit all the data installation to the Ministry so they’re able to do a full circulation.
For this software to work, we had someone who monitors the activity so people don’t abuse the system. It's basically a layer between the hardware that’s inside the vehicle, so users need to connect it to an API or to the actual hardware itself. On top of that, users also have to allow the installer to configure an audio system, and that is done by the Purple software.
After that, the user will have some kind of restriction and security advisor that prevents people from transferring that hardware anywhere they want. From there, you need to basically manage it from the ADI software and accomplish the regulation process, so the Minister of Transportation will also so have live updates through the internet.
In addition, the software is mobile-friendly and can be natively connected to mobile phones. We provided wireframes for the initial RFP, but as the project moved on, Purple also added some more features to the software.
What is the team composition?
For the actual communication, I would say I worked with at least four people, including an account manager and other team leaders.
How did you come to work with Purple?
The first time I worked with them, they built me a website for another project I had. They were super fast and responsive, which left a positive impression on me.
When we had another need for this project, I asked them to submit an offer. I took them because they took a serious look at my project, and I like how they built the visibility and transparency of the software.
What is the status of this engagement?
I think the engagement started around January 2018, and to my knowledge, it’s still ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
ADI is a local company that basically deals with vehicles. We’re not a tech company, and since we weren’t tech-savvy, Purple showed tremendous understanding and customer support to all the stakeholders from ADI — they were patient and their service was remarkable.
When you have a development project or any kind of a project, things are always going to be changing, especially if you’re working with the regulation and a very stubborn client. Purple showed flexibility with RFP and the things that needed to change. Their response time was quite fast, and it always felt like they were going the extra mile to make sure we were satisfied.
We got feedback from the end-user and had to do some changes, as there were a few challenges with the Korean API of the hardware — but we eventually solved them.
How did Purple perform from a project management standpoint?
They were very efficient with the sprints, backlog, and they always met the timeline. It was a rough start for the API to be able to connect to the actual hardware, so it took a bit more time than we expected. However, we were able to resolve it.
We used Asana for project management and bug reporting, and communication was typically done through Skype and Zoom.
What did you find most impressive about them?
What I liked about Purple was they always went the extra mile to make sure the client was happy and satisfied.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Not that I can think of as of now.
Any advice for potential customers?
Sometimes I felt like we did a big project, but the validation and the testing were only done at the end. Therefore, if you can break down your project into more stages, it would allow you to be more accurate and save time. We did a good job, but we built a huge component that we only validated with the installer or with the market itself.
