BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CTO of WilsonHCG, a global recruitment outsourcing company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pragmatists?

I needed help with development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They’re working on a couple of projects, including an AI-driven chat messaging technology that will allow us to automate key points of our recruitment process. We’re also working on a couple other smaller development projects with them. They’re using their own proprietary AI engine for the chatbot technology, then outside of that, it’s all fairly industry-standard stack development. They’re doing some API development on the projects too.

What is the team composition?

There’s a product manager and a couple of lead developers, with a couple of others behind the scenes. I've had an occasional exchange with their CEO as well.

How did you come to work with Pragmatists?

I have a software development background and know how products should be built. We looked at a couple of companies but what I liked about Pragmatists from the start was that they were very open and honest in their initial conversations. They’re very keen to design software that solves a business problem and have the courage to try focus on those business needs, rather than what the client directly asks for. They also came back with a very reasonable price.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in July 2018, and the work is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They provided us with very good estimates, which they’ve hit and we’re about to launch the product offering. They’ve come up with some really innovative technology and worked very well with other technology partners. I never have to worry about them.

Their work is technically excellent, accurate, and demonstrates how they sought to understand and really partner with us. They developed a very smart solution as they’re great at ideas. They get the software, but they get the human side, the design side, and the usability sides too.

How did Pragmatists perform from a project management standpoint?

The product manager is very good. They worked in an agile manner and gave us weekly playbacks. There’s a great collaborative feel with them and they’re an easy team to work with—they’re always asking the right questions and thinking ahead.

They’ve met all the deadlines and delivered everything we’ve asked them to do—the more domestic work we’ve thrown out to them, they’ve hit every deadline. They respond very quickly and are very responsive and proactive.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What sets them apart is their thinking. They take a very iterative approach and are a smart thinking team. They’re also technically sound—what raises them above the bar is the way they think about the impact of their software.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There’s always room for improvement. They’re a smaller team, which gives them agility, but it also means that sometimes they’re working on something already and we have to plan our time with them. However, we haven’t had an issue where it’s caused us any problems.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

No.

The MVP that Pragmatists developed was well-received, and is ready for testing. The team's ability to use an agile methodology to keep the project moving helped make the project a success. They also offered useful tactical advice that was subsequently implemented.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I work at ING Services for Business in Poland. I'm product manager of the service to provide new websites.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pragmatists?

We wanted to develop a minimum viable product (MVP) of our service.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Using AngularJS and Java, they developed the MVP from scratch.

What is the team composition?

We worked with two developers.

How did you come to work with Pragmatists?

We did a lot of research. I was looking for a company based in Warsaw so that we could meet with them in person as needed. We got many offers for our project, but Pragmatists offered a very good price for their services. It was important to us that they not use a waterfall methodology, so we liked that they use agile instead. After meeting with them, we were convinced they were the right fit for the project.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project took place from April–June 2018.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They created a fully working process, which was our goal. Our budget was quite limited so the challenge was to make a working process that’s not too big and doesn’t have too many features. They delivered a basic, working MVP that’s ready for testing. I was very happy with their work.

How did Pragmatists perform from a project management standpoint?

The great part of their agile methodology is that we didn't need a project manager. I was the product owner and the developers managed themselves. We worked in sprints. They met almost all of the deadlines for the tasks in each sprint. Some aspects of the project were quite difficult for me to manage because it was so technical, so they helped a lot with project management.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Instead of only focusing on development, they were thinking as business people. Often they were able to advise me from the business point of view, which was a huge advantage. It can be quite difficult to make an MVP because you have to constantly decide what aspects are most important. They did a great job communicating their opinions and helping me choose the most crucial features.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the director of development for an international company that provides call center services and inside sales software for Salesforce.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pragmatists?

We needed to add developers to our team to accelerate some of our work internally, including the creation of a dashboard that allows for real time analytics reporting for our hosted contact center.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Pragmatists provided additional development support to help us build an online dashboard that allows us to track analytics of our contact center, including KPIs, in real time. They primarily worked in the JavaScript and React Redux environments.

What is the team composition?

We worked with a couple developers on their team in order to augment our own development staff.

How did you come to work with Pragmatists?

Our CTO had an existing business relationship with one of the partners at Pragmatists.

How much have you invested with them?

We've invested about $350,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We've been working with them since June 2017. Although our most recent project was completed in May 2018, we have more planned with their team in the near future.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Pragmatists allowed our team to work on product areas where there previously were gaps, which has had a significantly positive impact on the business overall. The quality of their work has also been exceptionally good.

How did Pragmatists perform from a project management standpoint?

We engaged Pragmatists to augment our staff, so project management is handled on our end. The staff we work with on their team has been very good at meeting deadlines and collaborating with our team.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Informed by a keen awareness of overarching goals, Pragmatists identified best-practice methods and technologies to achieve them. They carefully calibrated software deliverables for a target user base in line with market trends. The team couples programming acumen with in-depth consultations.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the product lead for a research and analytics firm.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pragmatists?

We were looking for vendors who could help us maximize existing web platform and make it more sophisticated with a broader feature set. We didn’t have the capability in-house.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Pragmatists leveraged their experience to help us challenge our assumptions and consider impactful new options. We’d been predisposed to making a few technology choices. Taking on an almost consultative approach, they assertively posited alternatives like Angular, React, and an Elasticsearch database. They consistently choose the most appropriate frontend and backend developers for our needs.

As we progressed through the sales cycle, their knowledge base of cutting-edge technology was exhaustive and entirely up to date with market trends. We reprioritize quite regularly from our generative discussions. Currently, they’re working as our partner in an operational mode. They develop new features at our request and provide ad hoc software maintenance.

What is the team composition?

We work with four developers and one UX designer from Pragmatists.

How did you come to work with Pragmatists?

We sent out a request for proposals (RFP) and included Pragmatists in our pool of candidates. One of their marketing staff members has initially emailed my boss to reach out. We considered larger suppliers as well. Pragmatists impressed us the most with their knowledge, interactions, and expertise. Their CEO made a great impression during our first in-person meeting in London.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $150,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in September 2017, and the work is ongoing. We completed the build phase in late March of this year. Our partnership with Pragmatists is one we’ll continue.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Pragmatists delivered high-quality work at a competitive price. We’re delighted with the service they’ve provided us. When the build phase was complete, our immediate outcome was software we could take to market and use to establish a customer base. They impressed us from the outset by quickly understanding our overarching goals. We admired their programming expertise, as did our CTO.

Pragmatists was highly attentive and made us feel like a priority. Rather than taking requirements at face value, they continually push me to expand my perspective as the product owner by considering the business value of each desired feature. When we have customers onboarded, we’ll increase the intensity of our relationship. Our partnership with Pragmatists is one we’ll continue.

How did Pragmatists perform from a project management standpoint?

The entire process progressed smoothly. Pragmatists worked flexibly to keep pace with our progress and changing needs throughout the project. We scaled the team up or down as needed to match the volume of work or increase velocity. From our side, I was 100% allocated to the project.

We held regular standups every morning and used software that worked exceptionally well. At first, they used StoriesOnBoard to document the backlog and estimate story points for desired components of the specs. Later on, we used Kanbanize for a finer-grain level of daily task management. These online tools gave us transparency around project spends and progress against the scope.

Our initial concerns about their flat structure as a small software house never materialized as actual issues. We didn’t need dedicated project management resources and never had developers leave our project. We had the option of escalating matters to the CEO, but never needed to use it.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Pragmatists is clear, approachable, and has an outstanding technical pedigree. Even though it’s not their first language, they all have strong English language skills. The team also takes English lessons as part of their company package. Our day-to-day interactions were pleasant. It felt like I was an extension of their team and vice versa.

None of the larger software houses we considered challenged us in the ways Pragmatists did. They’re incredibly knowledgeable and understand their industry. They’re highly adept at guiding clients through the process of translating business objectives and desired values into explicit technical stories.

Are there any areas they could improve?

In the beginning, we had minor communication issues I’d assumed an email would get a quick response, but sometimes they’d get lost. We streamlined our correspondence by sticking to their Slack, their preferred tool. They don’t use email the same way a large corporate or professional services company might. This is a typical recent change in the industry, but maybe they could be a bit more proactive by flagging that cultural difference. It wasn’t a serious issue, though.

Pragmatists’ work was impressive and additional features were added to the site as a result. Construction managers have liked using the software. It has helped, as more and more people realize the value of the data being provided in real-time.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

The RADCO Companies is a multifamily property management and development organization. We own, operate, and renovate multifamily houses in the US, with 50+ properties and 80,000 doors. We've been growing considerably over the last few years.

I am the CTO of the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pragmatists?

We needed to find out what kinds of renovations were being undertaken in the field, and offer them in a streamlined fashion. Each community may experience a few million dollars' worth of capital improvements, typically by upgrading units in strategic areas and keeping track of dates and the cost returns. This was critical for us in calculating our return on investment and making more strategic investments.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Pragmatists assigned one resource for working with our construction department in order to identify what type of system could help them keep up with the required information. There was nothing in the marketplace which offered tracking down to specific units, so we spun up a couple of Azure virtual machines and built a data model. Pragmatists was brought in to develop a website based on that model. It's a Java-based solution targeted to iPad and larger form factors. It allows construction managers in the field to take notes, change dates, talk to the actual contractors, and so on. This data is pushed up to the corporate level, allowing us to keep track of the status of the project.

Instead of sticking to a Windows environment, we spun up some Linux servers in Azure, which has been successful in terms of cost-effectiveness and performance.

How did you come to work with Pragmatists?

We receive many emails from development groups, both in the US and in places like Asia and Europe. We had never gone that route, keeping the programming onshore. We also have some software expertise in-house.

Pragmatists' marketing email stood out amongst the others, so we vetted them and found that they could be a good fit for the project. We took a leap of faith, talked to some of Pragmatists' principals, and started working together. We were greatly impressed with Pragmatists' ability to overcome the language barrier and understand our needs. Once a few terminology issues were clarified, things went smoothly.

How much have you invested with Pragmatists?

The cost of Pragmatists' software development and DevOps services has been between $55,000 and $65,000. The data modeling and cloud hosting were handled by us internally.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Pragmatists at the beginning of 2016. We have added additional features to the site, and are continuing to do so going forward.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We have been impressed with the results, so we've added additional features to the site, enabling other departments to capture some of their data.

Our site acts as a communication vehicle for all members of our organization, showing them the status of rehabilitations being performed at various properties across the country.

We haven't quantified the time saved in checking emails and transcribing information onto spreadsheets, but the process has been streamlined considerably. The information can be presented in a digestible form to the corporate level.

Our construction managers have liked using the software, as does our senior VP of construction. He has been more effective at checking projects as he travels across the country. From a qualitative standpoint, the software has and continues to help, as more and more people realize the value of the data being provided in real-time.

How did Pragmatists perform from a project management standpoint?

Pragmatists has adopted an Agile and DevOps approach of continually making schedule releases and coordinating with us around features. There will always be a few issues with the deliverables; whenever we had data-validation issues, Pragmatists was quick to turn it around. Despite the 6–7-hour time difference, Pragmatists was willing to help us resolve issues in a timely manner, working after-hours.

We have used many popular tools like Slack and Jenkins as a continuous integration software.

What did you find most impressive about Pragmatists?

I've been involved in software development for more than 20 years, even though I don't work in that capacity for my current company. For other software companies I've worked with in the past, oftentimes the developer will also act as a user interface designer, delivering the product the way they see it. A unique aspect I've seen with Pragmatists is that they provide a separate user interface team which works with the developers in fine tuning the user experience and making it more consistent. I didn't find it to be as critical initially, but the more features we added, it became more useful to work with software designers who interjected with the developers.

Are there any areas Pragmatists could improve?

The 6–7-hour time difference with Pragmatists is the only drawback. This is something that we can't control, though.

The client described Pragmatists as software artists. They are very knowledgeable about software, architecture, and design. There were obstacles resulting from the Mach acquisition, but the project went well and was delivered on time.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Starhome Mach is a market leader in value-added global mobility and clearing services, removing communication barriers and differentiating services for connected people and devices. Starhome Mach’s customer base encompasses over 300 mobile network operators including 24 leading groups.

I am a Research & Development Director in the company, responsible for building and leading an international development group of 25+ engineers, and in charge for the entire (big) data analytic cloud services the company provides, from ETL to reports.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pragmatists?

Originally, Mach (before being acquired By Starhome) needed to build a new cloud based, multi-tenant web interface that will be the framework for the different billing analytic reports and services platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

It was before my time (a year before Mach was bought by Starhome). In general, from what I know, product managers described both the functionality and the GUI of the product. Mach's database administrator and architect were defining the database and the solution, while Pragmatists developers implemented the frontend, both the GUI itself and the backend of the GUI.

How did you come to work with Pragmatists?

It was before Starhome bought Mach.

How much have you invested with Pragmatists?

I am afraid I can't give the cost, but it was about a 3 year project, during which 6-13 employees from Pragmatists worked on it, plus around 10 Starhome Mach employees. The project is still ongoing with only a little involvement of Pragmatists developers.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project began in 2012, with about 10-13 Pragmatists developers, and was fully handed to Starhome Mach a year ago (2015). Since then, Starhome Mach continued to develop it with a little help of 1-2 developers from Pragmatists.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The bottom line is that the main GUI that Starhome Mach is using for its cloud-based services and analytics was made by Pragmatists.

How did Pragmatists perform from a project management standpoint?

Although there were many obstacles during the way, such as Mach being acquired by Starhome, which also resulted in new teams (from Israel) that also started working on it along with new project and product managers, the project went well and was delivered on time.

What did you find most impressive about Pragmatists?

The Pragmatists guys are software artists. They are very knowledgeable about software, architecture, and designs. The lead developers are also involved in different Java forums and make sure to be at the edge of the technology all the time. In addition, they are very well-trained in Agile methodologies and work accordingly (scrum), while using per-programing and focusing on uni-tests and continuous integration.

Are there any areas Pragmatists could improve?

As always after a 3 year project, there are things that could have been done differently in retrospective, requirements that were de-scoped hence solutions that could be done differently and simpler, but nothing major.
