Engie: Staff augmentation
Project manager for the “J’apprends l’Énergie” (Learning Energy) program – an educational program provided by the French multinational utility company ENGIE, Manon Gélibert could not sum up the situation of her peers any better than this: “So many projects – so little time.”
To do something about this problem, she chose to call Pentalog, to help her team meet delivery deadlines and integrate new requests into the platform in real-time.
The collaboration started 2 years ago and is ongoing today in a course that has turned out to be much richer than expected in spite of the distance. In Manon Gélibert’s opinion, their work is characterized by “dialog and a good understanding of development.”

BBBS of New York: Custom Software Development
In order for the GoBIG mobile app to be developed on time and budget, more time was spent during the Discovery Phase (a series of workshops with the client) to determine the four most valuable features.
Once the core features were determined, UX/UI design created a cohesive product. Development then began, using the SCRUM/agile methodology, which allowed for flexibility in modifying features. Also, instead of building a native app, GoBIG was first built as a web platform (a desktop site) and then “wrapped” as an app for both Apple and Android.

Tripadvisor: Agile&Scrum method's implementation
Serving Tripadvisor Since 2018: Pentalog has been supporting Tripadvisor since 2018 and currently provides the company with more than 50 top-level technical professionals based in Bucharest, Romania, Chisinau, Moldova and Guadalajara, Mexico.
For Tripadvisor’s New Ventures team, agility was the key to accelerating product delivery excellence.
In May of 2020, New Ventures had just launched an MVP for a new travel recommendations service, working with Pentalog, a software development company. To scale the product during the COVID-19 pandemic, the team moved to agile scrum.
“We started the shift to agile right after shipping the MVP,” commented Siddharth Iyer, the Tripadvisor New Ventures Team’s Technical Manager. “With agile, we were able to quickly adapt to the lockdown while delivering on some big objectives.”
Iyer’s colleague Katherine Reynolds, Director of Product for New Ventures, likewise credited the agile transition with opening up new collaboration efficiencies and increasing the team’s confidence and ability to deliver.
“If we didn’t have the agile infrastructure in place some big projects could have gone very differently, so that’s the big takeaway for me as a product person, the ability to really know what you can really get done,” she said.
With the New Ventures model serving as an example, other teams within Tripadvisor are looking at adopting a more structured and disciplined approach to agile.

SumUp: Staff augmentation
To successfully grow tech teams, companies can choose between two courses of action: either take on the task of recruiting new candidates or augment teams with external talents – which is what our client did.
Pentalog augmented SumUp teams which allowed SumUp to continue executing the roadmap without taking delays or even accelerating their plans. The first team focused on marketing acquisition solutions and the second on customers support tools. The onboarding of Pentalog team members followed the same program as for all other SumUp employees. Subsequently, it was complemented with frequent travels to the SumUp’s office. This allowed us to build a high cohesion within the teams, which is especially important when working remotely.

Rakuten: IT recruitment solution
What can a high-tech e-Commerce company do when they need to quickly recruit more developers but are located in a city with limited IT resources? Rakuten’s subsidiary in Germany was stuck in this exact situation.
Rakuten’s German subsidiary was faced with a recruitment challenge. They are located in Bamberg in northern Bavaria.
Rakuten’s decided to turn to Pentalog for an IT recruitment and outsourcing solution. Managers from Rakuten came to visit Pentalog’s delivery center in Iasi Romania at the end of July, 2016 and within just one week of their visit, Pentalog set up a seven person team, signed a contract, and began working on the project.
Pentalog’s Iasi team began with 1 scrum master/team leader, 3 developers, and 3 QAs. In May, Rakuten wanted to continue ramping up their team and Pentalog obliged this request by adding three more Java developers to the team within two weeks. Further ramp ups are expected in the future as this collaboration continues.
Pentalog’s team leader was integral to Rakuten’s transition to a product oriented development style. Through frequent on site visits in Bamberg and close collaboration, the Pentalog team leader helped Rakuten successfully transition into this new method of operation.

Challenges: AWS Cloud Migration
Pentalog began technical support of the Challenges and Sciences et Avenir websites in 2018. The project scope included the management of the infrastructure, which was hosted in a data center with booked physical machines.
Pentalog proposed to the client improvements to the time to market and more reliable deliveries by migrating to a cloud platform. We chose AWS for its abundant services, its large, resourceful community, and highly innovative capacities.
A Senior DevOps Solution Architect joined the initial development team, which also included three engineers, a Scrum Master, and a QA tester. The AWS Cloud migration was run in 3 phases:
- Discovery and full documentation of the initial infrastructure to ensure consideration of every characteristic and component
- Architecting the target infrastructure on AWS, along with a migration strategy and roadmap
- Implementation of the new infrastructure and final migration of its resources, assets, and traffic
The main skillsets they leveraged to ensure project success included:
- Cloud platform migration
- Infrastructure as Code
- Serverless
- High availability

playBac: Migration to AWS
Pentalog was contacted by PlayBac Presse about improving and optimizing this infrastructure architecture.
The first step was to run a Solution Design mission to analyze and recommend the most optimized platform. AWS was chosen for its richness of services, its innovation capabilities, and its reasonable price-tag. In addition, two types of self-service infrastructure models were designed for complex or simple hosting requirements, as appropriate. After a Proof of Concept with the migration of an initial application, Pentalog and PlayBac Presse have worked together to migrate every website previously hosted on the old Data Center.

Larvol: Custom Software Development
Larvol decided to take on a team of four mobile experts consisting of one front-end and one back-end iOS developer as well as a tester and scrum master. A 3 and a half month timeline was divided into 10 sprints and set up for the completion of the project.

Please describe your company and your position there.
My Company was a Software editor in Finance and HR
For what projects/services did your company hire Pentalog, and what were your goals?
We decided do work with Pentalog because I already worked with them in an other context and in other company. My goal was to unblock project started month ago by internal developper but going nowhere. My goal was also to grow up new developper becasue the main leader would be focus on other projects.
It was an opportunity for me to unrisk the development and continue the business development while doing big technical projects. The goal was also to show different mindset and the Agile culture: this had a great impact on the current internal team: showing them a way to do things differently.
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
We first, started with a small team to build a new API to facilitate the integration and migration of customers coming from other solutions. The team has been so successful that very quickly we have asked the team to work on multiple other areas of the software and bug fixing.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
The different scopes: API for HR and finance, New Talent review for HR Multiple new Features for Finance Multiple new Integration for HR system
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
Multiple teams Maximum was 20 people: PO, Java dev, React Dev, QA...
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
All the projects have been delivered in time. Team has always been force of proposition. Projects have been merge and integrated in production serving multiple customers.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.
Regular feedback are done with project director on a monthly basis. we have feedbacks on the mood of the teams, and we have also regular updates on projects. Feedback are very open and constructive. always with good mindset and coming with alternative in case of issues with somes resources or projects.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
They were very flexible with changes, and they always tried to find the best solutions for our needs. They are always willing to find the most convenient option, and adapt. For example, they have been very supportive during Covid period where we have found a real partner in front of us.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
It's not a big issue but having more french speaking devs would be great in some cases. (Many does but more on QA or PO side)
Pentalog was consistent in delivering on time and accommodating all requests and scope changes. The flexible team was quick to adapt to the client's processes, and they provide regular feedback to ensure transparency. They are responsive, quick-thinking, supportive, and solution-oriented.
