We redid our cloud infrastructure and terminal management system, and we needed to ensure the integrity and security of our platform.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Packetlabs has provided us with penetration testing services, ensuring there aren’t any immediate security vulnerabilities on the bottom of our structure. They’ve facilitated an initial discovery meeting to align our requirements with what they will be doing.
Packetlabs has tested authorization mechanisms and made sure that access controls are correctly set up for different users across reference data. Their team has also checked that there are no unrecognized or undesirable communications so that we won’t have third-party leaks.

App & Penetration Testing for Retail Publication Platform
"Packetlabs’ human touch set them apart. We felt very comfortable with them."

the review
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
We’re platform that provides retailers a way to reach users by posting publications, flyers, etc. Using our app, users can browse flyers and catalogs in their area, relevant deals, and shopping lists.
I’m the director of internal tools, in charge of IT.
What challenge were you trying to address with Packetlabs Ltd.?
Since we started the company, we hadn’t done security testing, so we signed with Packetlabs to do security testing and identify any areas that needed improvement.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We had them perform penetration testing on our infrastructure, assuming the role of a hacker to find exploitable weaknesses that malicious actors could attack. Based on those findings, they produced a thorough report. We took further actions to address those findings, and they performed a retest to evaluate our fixes. Afterward, they provided a final report.
As we performed the initial calls, they asked us for documentation on our internal infrastructure, but that was extent of the discovery. They moved independently from there.
What is the team composition?
The initial call was with one of the co-founders, and we worked with their security team after launch. There were 2–3 people on calls during the project, as well as 1–2 people doing the actual penetration testing.
How did you come to work with Packetlabs Ltd.?
We were investigating providers on Google for testing and security and narrowed our choices to Packetlabs and one other option. Packetlabs ended up being the best fit.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent around $14,000 CAD (approximately $11,000 USD) so far.
What is the status of this engagement?
We’ve worked with them since August 2020. They delivered the final report to us, but we haven’t had a chance to implement the changes. They’ve been put on the backburner, as they’re not highly critical. Once those are addressed, however, we’ll bring Packetlabs back in for another retest.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
I don’t have any hard numbers, but they had a very high impact in discovering a critical issue. It was so important that we resolved it minutes after receiving the report.
We were looking at another provider with the same level of detailed reporting, but we went with Packetlabs because of their human touch. The other vendor make us feel like a number. Packetlabs was pleasant and enjoyable.
How did Packetlabs Ltd. perform from a project management standpoint?
This part wasn’t too visible to us, but they took the project and our communication seriously. One of the steps they took to keep communication strong and smooth was setting up a dedicated Slack channel. If either side had questions, we voiced them in that environment.
The Slack channel was the main communication venue during the penetration testing, but we emailed and had video calls after those concluded.
What did you find most impressive about them?
We’d narrowed our choice down to two providers, and Packetlabs’ human touch set them apart. We felt very comfortable with them.
Are there any areas they could improve?
We’re pretty satisfied with the service and about how things went. There was a slight miscommunication regarding one of the items in the report. One of our DevOps people flagged it as not an issue because that particular flag wasn’t being used anymore. This was minor, however.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
If you’re already considering Packetlabs, then you should go with them right off the bat. We were pleased enough that we recommend them to anyone looking to do testing for the first time. You don’t need to look at every provider under the sun; you’ll be in good hands with Packetlabs.

We mainly coordinated with Richard (CEO & Founder) and worked with a team of penetration testers, including Denis (Security Consulting Manager).

I found Packetlabs Ltd. online while looking for key providers within the penetration testing market. Apart from submitting a reasonable quotation, they also stood out among their competitors because of their proven commitment to delivering reliable cyber security solutions.
What is the status of this engagement?
The project ran from July–August 2021.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Packetlabs Ltd. proved their testing expertise by strategically identifying the vulnerabilities that compromised our systems’ security. We addressed those issues to prevent hackers from infiltrating our systems, which was our main goal behind this project.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.
Packetlabs tested our application (in sandbox environment) and our infrastructure. Testing used automated scanners as well as human effort to check for the usual Top10 OWASP as well as other potential vulnerabilities.
After testing, a report was issued detailing the flaws, how they were detected, and recommendations for fixing them. As part of the contract, Packetlabs will do a re-test at a time of our choosing after we had fixed the flaws.
How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
8 testers

Please describe your company and your position there.
We are a SaaS-based comprehensive, data-driven Sales Readiness platform. I am working as Information Security and Compliance Manager here.
For what projects/services did your company hire Packetlabs Ltd.?
We took the services of PacketLabs for its annual VAPT of the platform, application, and network.
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
We followed our vendor evaluation process to shortlist PacketLabs as our vendor for VAPT. Key deciding factors were:
- Clarity on methodology to perform VAPT
- Willingness to understand the platform and business logic, and perform manual testing thus reducing the false positives.
- Highly qualified workforce.
Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.
Our Problem statement: We were undergoing VAPT of our platform and application on an annual basis, however, most vendors performed tool and checklist-based testing which gave us mainly low impact gaps. Post-on-boarding PacketLabs first spent time understanding the platform and then performed the testing.
During the testing, the gaps were communicated to us when identified with detailed remediation steps thus giving us ample time to remediate. Before the release of final report we were able to remediate all the identified gaps.
How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
Team of 3 testers
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
We received the final report with zero open gaps. Between the first cut of the gaps till the retesting we were able to close all the gaps with the support of PacketLabs.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
Very effective. We preferred a Slack channel for communication to avoid email chains and quick tagging and references
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
They were a very supportive team and I appreciated their transparency in communication.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
None I could think of.
