Bracketology - fantasy gaming platform app dev
The leadership contacted us with a request to support the existing system and create its updated version, rebranded as Bracketology.
The team used the following technologies for the fantasy gaming platform app development:
- Ruby – servers and back-end
- Vue.JS – internal part of the web application and front-end
- Word Press – landings
- Amazon Web Service (AWS) – for hosting and deployment of the project infrastructure
It took the team 7 months to:
- create a brand-new UI/UX design for the web version and adapt it to mobile browsers
- build an updated architecture and develop the front-end and back-end parts of the web application
- prepare and implement the site content
- carry out total testing and normalization of the product before the release
- create a custom admin panel for the platform management
The main problem was that the website is most actively used on the evening of the weekly episode release when the number of users reaches 100K at a time. Initially, the app ran well on Heroku, but as traffic increased, it began to experience problems and limitations. Heroku’s deployment API seemed to fail 1-2 times a week.
The application needed greater capacity and flexibility at a minimal cost. For this purpose, Onix’s experts decided to migrate the working application from Heroku to AWS due to the latter’s cost-efficiency, wide geographical coverage, better performance, and convenience.
Result and prospects
Within 7 months, Onix’s team completed the daunting task of migrating a working application to AWS and delivered a completely repackaged design for the project, transforming the old Bach Bracket website and application into an up-to-date innovative platform.
The client liked the improved interface and appreciated the constant smooth communication between the teams.

Salesforce application for support center processe
Our solutions
Our task was to optimize the registration form and make it easy to gather requests. By default, Salesforce forms have lists of fields to fill out and can’t be hidden under the required conditions. Our team has created a registration form that only shows the fields that are relevant for a particular type of incoming request. For example, by selecting the request type «Provider», the form will show the user only the fields required to fill in for the «Provider» type. Further, the request is registered in the system and users can work with this particular request.
Core technology
- Lightning Aura Component
- Apex
- Flow
Results
As a result, we got an application that is successfully used by the employees of the medical center. We created the following flow for the app: a support employee answers a call and receives a request; a support employee registers a request by filling out a form in our application; the request is saved in the system and then transferred to the responsible persons of the medical center. Now, this system helps teams to enhance registration processes and save employees time on more value-generating tasks.

The app is built around workouts, schedules, weights, sets, and reps with a flexible monitoring progress view and analytics comparison features. To get the project going, we held a business and market analysis of the existing fitness apps. We drew wireframes, created supporting documentation, developed a user flow map and an interactive prototype, did full app design, and turned it into a multi-platform software product.

Wine Picker App - Android and iOS App Dev
Mobile Development: Swift, Mobile App Development, Google Places API, Android App Development, Java, iOS Development, Objective-C
Our customers came to us with the general app concept and some supporting documentation. Onix team faced a nontrivial task of developing a complex and feature-rich app that takes into account user location, wine preferences, etc. and sophisticated back-end processing of large amounts of data. For Wine Picker, we've developed native iOS and Android apps with Swift, Objective С and Java along with supporting backend written in Python. It has also helped us deepen our knowledge of work with Google Places and improved our skills in development of complex multiprocessing databases.

Netigate - UI/UX Design for a Survey Platform
Graphic Design: Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, Responsive Web Design, Adobe Photoshop, SaaS, GUI Design
The customer approached Onix’ designers with the task of creating design for the new part of their online survey platform. We designed the part that allows creating surveys with the help of ready-to-use templates. The main challenge for our team was to produce design that will lead site visitors along the way of creating surveys based on a list of templates available for selection within the system. To work on Netigate project, our designers used Sketch, Photoshop and Illustrator.

KaliPak App - Smart Energy Use - UI/UX Design
Our design team created design for KaliAPP, Portable Solar Energy App for smart-energy users. KaliAPP is inseparable part of KaliPak, a portable solar power generator for emergency situations, outdoor living or any type of off-grid energy.
KaliPak is fully controlled from the app, so our goal was to create a user-friendly interface that easily connects the device and smartphone and provides instant information about the Kalipak’s charge capacity. The app’s design ensures maximum KaliPAK performance and convenience, control and monitoring of KaliPAK’s battery level, remaining time at current usage, consumption and charging levels.

Elastic Hybrid Integration Platform - SaaS UI/UX Design and Web Dev
The customer approached Onix with the idea of a massive re-design of the landing/product page for their SaaS. Elastic.io’s products help businesses spend less time on gathering data together across the entire organization, and instead, have enough time and resources to focus on using this data to improve business operations or to develop new products and services.
The designers were using Sketch and Principle which provide the ability to create animations, quality prototypes, and videos for subsequent use by the developers.
The landing page required dynamics and non-standard approach in front-end development. For the implementation, Onix developers were using ScrollMagic library, LESS CSS and jquery.
Since the release, elastic.io has already seen an increase in the number of leads, the goal being to grow repeat visits, references and trial requests on the product page.

Mobile App Dev & UI/UX Design for Fintech Startup Company

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the co-founder, COO, and CPO of a fintech startup company.
What challenge were you trying to address with Onix-Systems?
We didn’t have the technical expertise in-house, so we were looking for a development team that could act as an extension of our company.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Onix-Systems handles our application development work. They use Java and Sprint Boot for backend development, as well as Flutter and various third-party integrations for frontend development. Additionally, they’ve helped us develop a web-based administration console using Vue.js. Initially, Onix-Systems brought one of their experts to help us define the solution’s specifications, prioritize the functionalities we needed to implement, and validate our concept.
Ours is a youth banking app, so the main features of our app are on the backend. It’s fully integrated with a banking-as-a-service provider who helps us with our card processing and financial transactions. This app is available for Android and iOS.
The app is very similar to other neobanking apps, allowing clients to monitor their transactions, balances, and cards. It also lets them control their cards by setting restrictions or allowing them to block them. Within it, we’ve also included a referral program where people earn money for referring their friends.
What is the team composition?
We currently work with two full-time developers, a QA engineer, and a UI/UX designer. Still, Onix-Systems scales their team up and down as needed. In the past, we’ve worked with up to three frontend developers and three backend developers, and we’ve brought Vue.js developers to help us with the administration console as required.
How did you come to work with Onix-Systems?
I found them on Upwork. Initially, I wanted to build a very small app to test the market, and I was having issues finding a partner who could code in Java. Thus, they reached out to me and told me that they could do the front- and backend development work for me, which was great because I didn’t want to have two separate teams. After they completed the app, we continued working with them.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent around $192,000 so far.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in October 2021, and our engagement is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We don’t have quantitative metrics regarding Onix-Systems’ work because they simply work as an extension of our team. Still, the level of expertise they’ve brought to the table to support our development efforts is the main success factor for us to continue working together. Our app recently went into the VISA payment system, which was our goal.
How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?
Onix-Systems has performed very well, and their price is very competitive. Even though they’re based in Ukraine, their English level is amazing. Additionally, their QA is excellent, so they’ve fixed every issue before launching the app. The project manager from their end is also great; she stays on top of everything and is very organized.
I’m very involved in the project, so we have daily meetings on Google Meet — as I said, they act like part of our team. They use Jira for project management, and we use Slack as our main communication tool. Still, we can jump on an additional Google Meet call if we need to talk to them.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Everything Onix-Systems does is impressive, but their English level is their best asset. Additionally, they’re very communicative and adaptive to change, and they always explain things to me that I don’t understand.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I can’t think of anything they could improve on.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
I highly recommend working with them.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I am the CEO of a Software development company headquartered in Connecticut.
For what projects/services did your company hire Onix-Systems, and what were your goals?
We wanted to create an educational app to help kids learn reading comprehension, for a client/investor interested in this space. We needed it to be fun and engaging, with 3D environments as well as some 2D graphics, and to use speech recognition and track the child's progress.
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
We searched online for developers and spoke with several. We chose this developer for the ability to implement our ideas as well as supply ideas and solutions of their own. They also had great communication skills, flexibility, and a wide array of experience with relevant projects.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
We provided the team with a detailed design document at first, and visual designs, and they implemented what we needed in Unity. As we progressed, we had additional features requests and more and more complex versions, and the team continued to deliver. They also became more and more involved in the process of designing the details of the app functionality, as they were providing great ideas and solutions themselves. They also incorporated data analytics, while maintaining necessary user privacy for kids. They developed a backend where user registration can be securely stored, and also a database where educational content can be stored and edited and displayed in the game on the fly. They also created web access for our clients to access that. We eventually moved the visual design to their team as well, since they showed they did great work on that end too and it made sense to consolidate.
How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
We had a project manager at all times, as well as ongoing contact with all developers working on the project.
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
Our app MVP was delivered at high quality to the clients/investors and made them very happy. They continued to fund additional development due to the great results and great value the team provided. We are continuing to work with them to add more content and mini-games to our educational app. It has already been soft launched on the app store, and a bigger launch with more marketing efforts behind it will be coming soon, once we add some more content to the app and get some more feedback from our current testers.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.
The project management was very flexible, with clear communication and a willingness to meet client's needs. We had easy communication via tools like skype and Trello, both with the project managers and with the developers.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
They do great app development work, and they bring their own ideas and suggestions to the table. Both the project managers and the developers are very forthcoming with ideas, realistic timelines and suggestions. They are true partners who take initiative and clearly care about the project.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
In one or two cases, it might have been useful to know further ahead of time when a developer is going on vacation or becoming briefly unavailable due to other projects. But having said that, I think this is understandable too, given that our projects often ended up growing in scope and timeline. And to their credit, any time we were in a pinch, they offered additional developers who could help. So we're very pleased.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I am a Co-Founder of a SaaS company focused on digital marketing services. The mobile app platform allows for the personalized creation, optimization and analytics of Google, Facebook and Instagram ads.
For what projects/services did your company hire Onix-Systems, and what were your goals?
We wanted to complete the development of a mobile app for users to obtain our digital marketing services. While we had very initial code, designs and project vision, our goal with Onix was to develop a fully functioning mobile app for users and admin panel for internal use.
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
We used the company Aloa to find, interview and hire Onix. Understanding Aloa's vetting process, meeting with the Onix team to gauge their understanding of the defined project, and discussing estimates with the team ultimately led to us confidently starting the partnership with Onix.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
We had a number of introductory and discovery meetings early on to discuss our goals, objectives and deadlines with the project. We provided the team with early code, app designs, app logic and backend logic. Within 1 week, the team delivered an already much-improved test version of the iOS and Android apps.
Throughout the project, the team provided detailed and consistent updates on app progress and delivered an approved and launched app within the App and Google Play Stores. The app features and builds include push notifications, camera integration, support desk, and a number of third-party APIs. We continue to work with the team across app development and feature builds.
How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
We were assigned:
- 1 project manager
- 4 full-time developers
- 1 QA
At times during our project, resources have varied to include part time and DevOps positions.
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
Within 4 months, a fully functioning approved app was launched in the App Store and Google Play Store. Within the first week of launch, the app saw over 100 downloads, and an aggregate 5-Star rating.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.
The project manager has been easy, responsive and organized to communicate with. While status meetings occur throughout the week, any messages or emails outside of meetings are clear and have quick response times.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
The team's capabilities and knowledge in the mobile app space have been incredibly impressive. Additionally, their clear communication and quick response have resulted in efficient project management and completion.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
An area we've improved together throughout the project is centralizing communication.

Coding for Web Application Company

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
We are a software developer offering our own products, and also working with clients ranging from startups to billion-dollar companies. We provide mobile application work, usually from the ground up, based on business needs. In the case of startups, we typically start with a pure concept, and bring the application to market.
I am the owner and Chief Product Manager of the company.
What challenge were you trying to address with Onix-Systems?
We have a need for developing high-quality products able to generate money and attract users, but within a reasonable budget and a fast timeline.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We've collaborated with Onix-Systems on a series of products, and we have a very close relationship with their team.
Onix's contribution has been light in terms of design. We do this through our own resources and through other contractors, depending on the type of application. We handle the design for business applications almost exclusively in-house, and we grab outside designers for social networking apps.
How did you come to work with Onix-Systems?
I had a startup 5 years ago, and was looking for resources. We went through a number of firms and gave each one trial projects, with less than great results. I found Onix, gave them a little project, and without having coded before, I could tell that the work was far better done than what I'd seen from other vendors. Based on this, I gave Onix larger projects over time, with very good success.
How much have you invested with Onix-Systems?
The cost of Onix's services is between $10,000 and $15,000 per month, on average.
What is the status of this engagement?
We've been working with Onix-Systems for 5 years, and have an ongoing relationship.
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?
We've worked on around 12 different projects with Onix-Systems, excluding very small ones. In terms of results, we always stood where we wanted for our customers in terms of quality and reliability of delivery.
We've worked on social networking apps which are very complex to market, ERPs [enterprise resource planning] for internal systems, and so on. We've had some very happy startup and corporate clients.
We host all of our work on Amazon's infrastructure, and always deploy systems which are robust, with levels of redundancy in the case of corporate systems. We've never experienced downtime that would lead to business issues. Typically, our systems are up into the high 90% range, and there have been no business interruptions caused by our systems. Like with all software, we have experienced bugs, but they get resolved with a very fast pace.
The apps developed with Onix's help have achieved 4.8 stars on the app stores, on average. We judge applications based on their utility, but we also look for reviews mentioning bugs. Generally speaking, we've had apps with tens of thousands of users, and bugs have never been an issue.
How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?
We set out realistic timelines and scopes of work. They can change quite often, but in general, clients have been happy with our ability to deliver.
What did you find most impressive about Onix-Systems?
We've worked with Onix for 5 years, and never had to question whether our projects were important to them or not. We receive Onix's full attention even on smaller projects, where they're not making much profit. Onix has a very consistent approach and responsiveness.
Are there any areas Onix-Systems could improve?
More design capabilities would be a nice ability to have access to, but I've tended to prefer independent designers. Projects can differ in this regard, so it's better to pick people based on the current one.
What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with Onix-Systems?
I've worked with some of the most talented people from Onix, but it's still important to articulate what the business is before jumping into code, making sure that the team understands what a company does and doesn't do.

Offshore Development for Canadian Agency
"We were satisfied with Onix's performance, and would consider hiring them again."

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
We're a small web development company based in Montreal, specializing in open-source PHP applications, including WordPress and Drupal work. We focus on outsourcing and coordinating larger offshore groups.
I am the Chief Technology Officer of the company.
What challenge were you trying to address with Onix-Systems?
One of our clients was seeking to build a non-native mobile app. It was a combination between a backend PHP and an AngularJS frontend.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Onix-Systems has a large team, as far as I understand. When we had our interview, they mentioned that their specialties were CakePHP and AngularJS, so we haven't used them for anything else. Design, for instance, isn't something that we'd outsource.
How did you come to work with Onix-Systems?
We found Onix through Upwork. They had high recommendations for work on PhoneGap, AngularJS, and CakePHP apps. We went through the normal vetting process, sending out an open application, scaling applicants, and having personal interviews. We used Onix for a small job initially, which was a similar piece of work, in order to see how we could get along and what Onix's level of responsiveness was.
How much have you invested with Onix-Systems?
The total cost of our project with Onix was $45,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The project was completed at the end of May 2016, after a 2-month development period. Our client has begun a second phase of their product, using interns for code maintenance and updates. We've completed our contract with Onix amicably, but we haven't had any similar projects since that time.
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?
Our direct client was the application architect, and they were strong in the technologies used. We didn't have a lot of facetime with the end-users on the business operations side. Our client was satisfied, but they had a romantic idea of outsourcing to a Chinese-like factory where people would be working all day for no money. They had to adjust to the fact that Onix was a team which functioned like any other developer in North America, but at a slightly reduced rate. Things didn't progress as quickly, but the client was satisfied with the quality of the code. He is particular about this type of thing, so it was a big vote of confidence.
How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?
We were satisfied with Onix's performance, and would consider hiring them again. We had a moderate budget and an understanding client, which helped a bit. There were small miscommunications which we were able to smooth over in our context. With a more problematic client, I'd consider a different team. The project managers and tech leads from Onix were responsive and had good communication skills, but we needed to be more embedded into the team. Once we started working with the senior developers, we found their English to be very poor. This is not a criticism, but rather a tradeoff when working overseas. When we started the work, we found that the tech lead from Onix was very strong, but communication on a day-to-day basis proved to be difficult.
What did you find most impressive about Onix-Systems?
We've dealt with developers from India and Asia, and generally found that they like to make a strong first impression by putting their best men in the first row, after which the competency drops off rapidly. With Onix, we found that they maintained a good quality and presence throughout the course of the project, which convinced me to trust them in the future. Trust is a big issue when working with an offshore partner. I wouldn't hold the communication issue mentioned earlier against Onix. It's simply the nature of this type of development.
Are there any areas Onix-Systems could improve?
A bit more structure would help. Our project was a bit disorganized, with a sloppy Agile process. We weren't good at establishing fixed schedules, so it's not something which I'd hold against Onix in particular. Onix didn't go out of their way in order to help formalize the process using the project manager and tech leads on their side. This would be a good improvement to make in order to reassure clients, by providing reporting and daily updates from a more English-fluent counterpart.
What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with Onix-Systems?
Any prospective client needs to treat Onix's team with the same respect that they would give to high-quality engineers from North America, but they should also be prepared to insert their own process. We asked for some flexibility, but Onix proved to be a bit disorganized in the end, with developers entering and leaving the team, and unclear timelines. Clients shouldn't be afraid to establish ground rules and a framework within which Onix should work.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CEO of messageLOUD. Our Android app reduces distracted driving by reading aloud messages as they’re received. This allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
What challenge were you trying to address with Onix-Systems?
While our Android app has become quite successful in the marketplace, an iOS app with similar capabilities doesn’t exist. We needed resources who could overcome those technical challenges and develop the iOS app.
What was the scope of their involvement?
They’ve built an iOS app that can read messages aloud, using our designed wireframe. Because an iOS with similar capabilities doesn’t exist, they’ve needed to overcome significant technical problems to ensure product functionality. It’s a case of finding the right technical solution. They’ve developed the backend for the app, which has a notably complex server-side architecture.
What is the team composition?
The four-person-core team includes back- and frontend developers, a tester, and a project manager. We exclusively work with the project manager.
How did you come to work with Onix-Systems?
We originally contracted them through UpWork for another project. When we began conceiving the iOS app, we spoke with 15 app developers who deemed the project impossible. We then approached Onix-Systems’ project manager with our idea. Despite the technical challenges, they accepted the task.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent over $100,000 thus far.
What is the status of this engagement?
Work began in December 2016 and is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We’re currently in closed beta and plan to transition into a public beta in a few weeks. As a result, we lack current quantitative metrics on the app’s success.
However, from a technical standpoint, we applaud their incredible technical skill. This is a project that has never been done before; the app either works, or it doesn’t. Onix-Systems has produced a functional app that others have labeled impossible, which is a testament to their expertise.
How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?
They’ve been truly excellent. We primarily use the ticket management platform Redmine.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their outstanding ability to solve extreme technical challenges distinguishes them from their competitors. We praise their innovative approach to overcoming difficulties that have never been addressed before.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Nothing comes to mind.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Adopting a consistent and methodical mindset is crucial in solving complex technical challenges.

- Project Manager x 1
- Designer x 1
- Front-End Developer x 1-2
- Team Lead x 1
- QA Engineer x 1
- Back-end Developer x 1-2
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
We were able to launch and in the first 2 months, we have 600 paying subscribers.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
Very good, we had very few issues and when there were they tried hard to rectify the situation.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
We are impressed with their professionalism and transparency in their work.
Are there any areas for improvement?
I think the better they can get in communicating and explaining the whole process of building a website (or whatever service they are doing) for someone with limited technical knowledge, the better customers' expectations will be managed.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I am a Strategist at Aloa. We are a platform for outsourcing software development for startups. Onix is one of our trusted partners who we contract our work out to.
For what projects/services did your company hire Onix-Systems, LLC, and what were your goals?
We have had a handful of projects, ones that were needing a dev team to build everything from scratch as well as some that were handoffs to improve an existing application.
Our goals are to build a successful product and experience for our clients, and in order to do so, we look to companies like Onix to support us in our need.
How did you select Onix-Systems, LLC and what were the deciding factors?
Our vetting process is very exclusive. We have vetted through thousands of firms and have only selected 11 to be within our network. We start off by qualifying based of UI/UX. Onix has a tremendous design department, so they passed round 1.
After that, we asked for at least 3 US client references to reach out to. All said glowing things, so the passed round 2.
Round 3 was interviews. We jumped on calls, did code reviews, analyzed their development processes, and ultimately determined that they are more than qualified to be part of our network.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
The exact details of the scope of work are under NDA so I can't explain it specifically.
However, we have worked on projects across many industries and tech stacks with Onix: We have done projects utilizing React, Javascript, GTP-3, Unity, Swift, Kotlin, and Python.
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
I have worked with 10+ people from Onix. During my day to day, I work most closely with Onix's Project Manager and Account Manager.
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
They're amazing, and always are! We have a very strict policy and low tolerance for sloppy work, so the fact that we continue to send work their way speaks volumes about their quality of work.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timelines.
We use AloaManage, a proprietary management tool to facilitate the management of the relationship.
Onix has fabulous communication skills and is consistently available for the client's questions or concerns. They are also very proactive in raising points to the client and setting proper expectations.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
Their diligence and willingness to go above and beyond to support their clients. Onix is very relationship focused, which isn't the norm when it comes to outsourcing.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
Very little - we do review feedback with them every other week, and by in large, they tend to have very few things to improve upon.

Please describe your organization.
We have two companies that do business with Onix. The first company is called Virtual Workflow. Virtual Workflow produces a product called ROI Genius, which is an enterprise level end-to-end business solutions system.
The other company is Alternative Spaces Inc. We are developing a social robotics department, and we'll be bringing people together to be developing for Jibo. You can read about it on the Jibo website. It's the first evolution out the door of a social robot that's able to recognize faces, recognize natural language and they're going to be releasing a VSDK [vertical solution development kit] in October [2015].
At that point, we will have a team from Onix that will be able to write skills for the robot, which will be sold on the Jibo skill store, and we will be able to service other developers who wish to develop their own skills for Jibo and add it to the robot.
Jibo started out as a brainchild of our firm, but this is a competitive space now. It's a good place to start, but Jibo was originally developed by a person at MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] and she did a Kickstarter and raised about $2.3 million . Then, they went out and raised about $20 million to manufacture the product. Now, they've expanded it to China, and I think they've raised another $11 million.
The other thing we do at Alternative Spaces is represent Onix in English speaking countries. We work primarily in the United States and we have a sales and marketing team who is able to take and refine all the needs of the clients in fluent English with directions that are easy for Onix to be able to complete the tasks rapidly and accurately.
What is your position?
My position in both of them is CEO.
What business challenge were you trying to address with Onix-Systems?
We decided to find a long-term development partner for complicated projects. The best recommendation that I can give to firms in our situation is that when you start with a team of people, then you should continue developing with the same resources because platform development builds on itself. It's a full-service platform.
Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.
They are developing a standard development kit for the robotics firm and providing ongoing platform development work for the marketing firm.
How did you come to work with Onix-Systems?
I looked at firms with my partner, who is a computer scientist. When we decided to launch our startup, he put together a simple routine and went out and found five different companies that could write the routine and sent out the requests. He wanted to see how much it would cost and what would come back. He picked two American companies. He picked an Indian company. He picked a Ukranian company, and I believe he picked a Chinese company too.
All of the quotes from the offshore companies in India and China came back with many questions and the American companies were very expensive. Onix came back the next day with the task complete and said it was simple.
Onix's competency level was so much higher than everybody else's that there was no question about whom we wanted to work with. When we started working with Onix-System, we created a team that could turn things around overnight. So we became a 24/5 shop for production and 24/7 shop for support, which is important because of things that needed to get done the next day were done as our team here was sleeping. We got up in the morning and everything was tuned to the client, which has built us a tremendous business. I think speed and accuracy make a big difference.
Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?
It was between $200,000 and $1 million. But, I will also say that in 2016 we'll be above $1 million. It will keep growing. We found that there's not too much difference between people in the west and the east except the east was the Soviet Union and so, while they had all the technology, they needed there was some base infrastructure that we had available to us that people in Eastern Europe didn't. Even though they were extremely proficient in programming everything they were doing. The structure of the company and the structure of all the companies that I watched over there – they vary greatly. The CEO at Onix and I have become very close and so we work together to make sure that everything works smoothly. It's a giant advantage.
What is the status of this engagement?
We've been doing business with them now for eight years. We have the same team member who started with us and been with us the entire time. Onix-Systems is extremely reliable, hard working, and intelligent.
We're actually increasing the amount of work that we're doing together. An example of that would be the social robotics piece we're putting together. This is going to be a brand new department we're putting together because there's not a lot of expertise in this area right now and one of the things that Onix wants and that we want is always to be ahead of the curve.
Before even the SDK is released, we will have the team in place. They'll have done their homework, and people will be practicing so that when we hit the ground, we can hit the ground running.
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?
I can't give you statistics from the customers. That wouldn't make any sense. We went to Asbury Park where they had no people and found a way to bring 51,000 Facebook fans on and then wrote software and protocols to convert them to 11,000 leads. That's kind of personal for the people that are running that business. We send out millions of pieces of mail.
Onix is primarily interested in doing business with mid-range companies, so I'm talking with somebody tomorrow who's got a privately owned $250 million company and he's the type of person that will need ongoing help as he moves on.
We do work with startups, but it's a lot more difficult because they're usually missing one or more important elements and you have to walk them through that. It's more time consuming.
How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?
Right now, there's 90 people who are programming, and the capacity is to build up to 200 people in the current building that they own. The capacity is there to do bigger jobs, and I know they have the project management ability to take on jobs in the $1 million range.
What distinguishes Onix-Systems from other providers?
I would say the fact that they tutor everybody in English is a unique benefit. Everybody there either speaks or write English perfectly. They also have a learning center to bring new technologies and new people aboard. As a growing company, they're not isolated.
Is there anything Onix-systems could have improved or done differently?
No, I speak to them on a daily basis and my representatives speak to them on a daily basis. They even have conversations with some of my clients – direct one to one so I would say that there's nothing they could improve upon because we are in contact every single day. We're in voice contact and face-to-face contact almost daily. It's not writing back and forth. It's understanding the issue or the task and really understanding why that task needs to be done that's turning out really superior work.
Onix-Systems has become an extension of the client’s team, bringing their expertise to the table to bring the product to market. The team is very communicative and adaptive, and their English level is outstanding. Additionally, their QA process is impressive, allowing them to deliver quality work.
