NTR Lab continues to develop robust, dependable, high-quality software solutions that are an essential part of the core business. Despite being offshore, the team is incredibly responsive and quick to remedy any issues that arise at any point during the development process.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

    BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and CEO of Clear Estimates.

    OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with NTR Lab?

We initially hired them in 2005 because we had built our own custom software application with Microsoft Access, but it was super clunky. We wanted to commercialize the application, so we hired NTR Lab to help us with that.

    SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They took what we had built and converted it into a downloadable, 30-day free trial, pay-to-operate software platform that we could sell to other businesses. The team made it a solid package that we could put on Windows.

In 2007, they worked on a desktop tool that we built, managed its authentication and licensing permission, but still on a recurring revenue business model. In 2013, we hired them to take the tool and make it a cloud-based platform. They did a lot of heavy lifting, including design work, porting the code from the desktop application, and making it a more sustainable business that we run today.

They’ve worked with us continuously since we hired them and, they do our programming and product development using mainly ASP.NET. The bulk of their work now is taking our platform, which has a large user base and making the UI more user-friendly. Their working model is based on continuous improvement of the UI – they build it, test it internally, and then produce it.

    What is the team composition?

We work with between 2–3 dedicated resources who are usually backend developers, depending on the tasks.

How did you come to work with NTR Lab?

We found them through an outsourcing platform that doesn’t exist anymore. In the early 2000s, we put out an RFQ and looked at a dozen of bids from around the country. They were neither the most economical nor the most expensive choice, but they had the best skillset for what we wanted to deploy. Before we decided to work with them, we were able to look at some of the interactive demos they provided.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested between $200,000–$999,999 thus far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in 2005 and our engagement is ongoing. They’ve worked on multiple projects with us.

    RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The success of our business and the success of their work are closely tied. The solution is reliable and functional — we have had very little downtime and few issues. We continue to work with them because we’ve built trust and they’ve impressed us with their performance over and over again.

How did NTR Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

We have monthly scoped projects that are based on feedback that we collect from the users, as well as GitHub-based collaboration. We also have monthly meetings where we come up with more specific projects and rank them by priority. They usually use the waterfall methodology for project management. However, it’s sometimes agile because we do relatively short sprints.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It’s sometimes difficult to work with offshore teams, especially when there are issues with the product. But NTR Lab has always been extremely responsive and quick to address any urgent issues, which is a testament to the quality of our partnership and their work.

Are there any areas they could improve?

English isn’t their first language so, though they have strong English skills, communication can sometimes be a little tricky. We usually have to rely on scoping projects in a way that they’re ready to interpret. It doesn’t get in the way of our productivity, but there’s a learning curve when it comes to working with offshore teams.

    BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and CEO of Clear Estimates.

    OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with NTR Lab?

We first hired them in 2005, I believe, because we’d built our own custom software app with Microsoft Access but it was super clunky. It was purpose-built for one company – we wanted to commercialize it as a company. We hired them to convert it into a downloadable, 30-day free trial, pay-to-operate software platform we could sell to other businesses.

    SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’ve been working with them for 15 years now. It started off with that first simple conversion project. In 2007, we migrated to a recurring revenue model with the same desktop tool that they were able to manage the authentication and licensing permissions for.

In 2013, they converted it into a cloud-based platform. We relied heavily on their whole team, including their design experts exporting the code from our desktop application and making it the more sustainable, cloud-based business we run today.

It’s been a continuous process the whole time, with monthly scoped projects, bug-tracking, GitHub based collaboration where they do everything for us in terms of product development and programming.

The features they implemented fulfilled the feature requests we’ve gathered from our users. They build the deliverables, test it internally, and then release it into a staging environment so we can test it ourselves.

    What is the team composition?

We have between 2–3 dedicated resources, usually backend developers, depending on the tasks we need. It could be a couple of different people. We don’t use their design team much anymore, it’s mainly functionality that they help us implement.

How did you come to work with NTR Lab?

We used an outsourcing platform that isn’t around anymore, back in the early 2000s. We put out an RFQ and got bids from all around the country. They weren’t the most affordable, but they seemed to have the best skillset for what we were trying to deploy. I really liked their CEO, and we aligned well.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $500,000–$1,000,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since 2005.

    RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The success of their work and the success of my business are fairly closely tied. It mainly falls on us to decide what functionality will be the best received by our user base.

How did NTR Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

They worked in Waterfall, but we’re also fairly agile. We do relatively short sprints and have some baseline level commitments to bug fixing. We also have monthly meetings to come up with a scope for more specific projects.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The reliability is quite good. We’ve had very little downtime and haven’t had any major technical issues. If you roll out a new feature that wasn’t properly tested, it could lead to issues that take the core product offline. It sometimes is concerning to use an off-shore team when those things happen, but they were extremely responsive and addressed any urgent issues very quickly.

Are there any areas they could improve?

As with any offshore team, communication can be a bit tricky. That just means we have to rely on scoping projects in a way that they’re ready to interpret, whether it’s images or mockups. It didn’t get in the way of our productivity, but there’s a learning curve when it comes to interacting with people offshore.

    BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

Cobuild Inc. is a technology platform enabling aspiring homeowners to connect with industry professionals to expedite their home build. I'm the CEO of Cobuild Inc.

    OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire NTR Lab?

We were seeking to address a market opportunity using a web-based platform concept. We need to build an MVP in a short time-frame that was fairly complex. We need a company that were experts in both architecture design, complex algorithms, and full-stack development capabilities for the full platform requirements.

What were your goals for this project?

Our primary goals for the project were to have a fully working MVP ready for market testing.

    SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We were introduced to NTR Labs through a mutual acquaintance. We evaluated several other companies but found NTR Labs to be the most knowledgeable and pragmatic in their suggested approach. In addition to finding the team knowledgeable, they were extremely personable and gave us no nonsense feedback to improve our service offering.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

NTR Labs designed, developed, configured, optimized, and managed the platform development in its entirety. Essentially, NTR Labs acted as our in-house developers. After agreeing a performance specification, NTR produced a detailed proposal and milestones with accompanying dates. After signing an agreement, they delivered on their promises despite many adjustments from our team. Within the agree timeframe we had a working MVP to market test.

    What was the team composition?

We had approximately 7-8 developers from NTR Labs ranging from the CTO to algorithm experts programming in Python. We had a few people change over the period based on project requirements but the core team remained the same. We were impressed.

    RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The solution provided by NTR Labs enabled use to test our product in a very small timeframe. Typically, a startup may have spent twice as long to develop a similar MVP. We estimate that NTR Labs reduced our development time by 50% and delivered it for less than we would have delivered it for through alternative vendors we talked to. In short, NTR delivered on their promises and went above and beyond what was asked. We have no hesitation in using them again, soon!

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We scheduled weekly calls on Skype, using Slack for daily conversations and then used JIRA and GitHub for specific queries and development. We experienced minimal language barriers.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

NTR gave us a senior stakeholder who was able to influence their development team to be extremely responsive. They were quick to respond to any issues and superbly knowledgeable in all the technical areas we came across. They undoubtedly have some of the smartest developers we've worked with - extremely bright! Furthermore, we found they had a great work ethic. If there were ever any misunderstandings, they were quick to resolve them, even if the error had been on our part.

Are there any areas for improvement?

No specific areas come to mind. All in all a great company!

    BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO of Quarrio, an AI company focused on enabling people to ask questions of their data using free-form natural language. It’s oriented towards normal business users and not tech-heads or data scientists in order to allow them to do what a data scientist could do automatically.

    OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with NTR Lab?

We needed help with product design and development.

    SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We interacted with them from the beginning of our journey. They helped us with an array of development tasks, ranging from product specification and design to architecture and actual development.

When we started working with them, we had an idea, but not a well-defined path to operationalizing the ideas. We started with discussions and feedback sessions on what technological approaches would be possible. As we progressed it became more concrete, and we started delving down on how to actually create a product design and architecture for such a product to make it scalable. Scale and ease of maintenance are particularly necessary for a complex product like this.

Then we started developing a prototype and moved it towards an alpha product. Java and Python are the two primary programming languages used in a microservices architecture. Based upon the microservices architecture, we also used methodologies and approaches within AI such as machine learning, neural networks, and deep neural networks specifically from the perspective of natural language processing (NLP).

In the final product, you can ask a free-form question and the system will generate an accurate answer in real-time. It will also auto visualize it for you in a table and a graph. Then you can ask follow-up questions on that, and it will change the context of the answers. You can speak or write to it. It’s similar to Siri or Google Assistant or Alexa connected to any kind of SQL or NoSQL data source.

    What is the team composition?

Our main point of contact was Nick (CEO, NTR Lab). We also worked with their CTO, a couple of their architects, and their developers. The team was less than 10 people at any given time.

How did you come to work with NTR Lab?

I was introduced to them through a friend who had worked with them, and I really lucked out.

What is the status of this engagement?

    The project lasted from 2014–2017.

    RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They were excellent to work with, and I appreciated working with them. I’d maintain contact with them but I’m just too busy. They’re honorable people. They don’t overcharge, and they were willing to work with our deficiencies.

The final product that’s out now is not exactly the same product that they built. They built the prototype and alpha. Thanks to the work that their team did, however, we were able to test the concepts and then went out and raised a lot of money and scaled our own development team.

How did NTR Lab perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was very good. They were understanding of us, and put specific project management methods in place when we were deficient in that area.  They always give feedback and question your assumptions, which helps you get better results.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I really like that they’re honest. They’re a bunch of engineers that started a consulting firm, so they think like engineers, not like salespeople. I’d always prefer working with people who like to create products rather than people who like to sell things.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They don’t quite understand the complexity of selling into the U.S. environment, or they didn’t at the time when I was interacting with them. They were much better in comparison to US-based and India-based firms in actually delivering, but they were worse at selling and marketing themselves. I would never have found them had I not had my friend refer them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Work with them. Judge them on their technical and product development jobs rather than their marketing.

Our goal was to build several successive MVPs that would tackle the problems of performance, security, and network topology, which plague the mainstream DLT market. In addition, we had envisioned several supportive modules, including a network dashboard and a data bridge to the Ethereum Network. We anticipated that building a strong solution from the beginning would set us apart from the dominant incumbents.

    SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We selected a results-driven partner, who came highly recommended by our mutual acquaintances and who came with a strong reputation for innovative development. We spoke with the leaders of NTR Lab and their depth of expertise became the deciding factor for our selection.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

NTR Lab developed several iterations of an innovative decentralized network that features hierarchical topology, a unique consensus model (F-BFT), a graph tree ledger (DAG), variable transactions and hybrid permission capabilities. In addition, some auxiliary components were developed along the way: tokenization, Ethereum bridge anchoring, and a dashboard.

    What was the team composition?

The team had a few support analysts, one main programmer, and one project manager partially allocated to this task.

    RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Project completion was a spectacular achievement for our future business operations. Even though we designed most of the components of the early MVPs, actually developing them and bringing them to life set us apart in the eyes of investors and vendors seeking decentralized solutions.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Despite offshore operations and significant time difference, NTR Lab project management was seamless and effective.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

It often feels that one programmer from NTR Lab brings the skills and effectiveness of ten from any other company. We worked with many vendors within our current IT firm and past firms in various industries, but the effectiveness of NTR Lab development talent is top-notch.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We are happily continuing our work with NTR Lab on future developments and do not see any vital flaws in our arrangement.
