nomtek delivered a superb platform that satisfied expectations. As a result of its quality, the client leverages the product to engage potential clients and investors. The team’s flexibility streamlines collaboration. Their responsiveness and communicativeness support continued collaboration.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the VP of R&D for Audioburst. We transcribe and analyze audio from radio broadcasts and podcasts to create searchable content.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

We needed a frontend for our backend systems and AI technology. We wanted to build a mobile application that would be the interface for end-users to experience and search our content.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

nomtek designed and developed an iOS and Android app using an API to our backend system. This provided access to our information and data. Their team adjusts functionalities as needed and manages monthly updates.

They also developed an automotive Android platform. The system enables users to connect with Android-based automotive systems.

Currently, their team’s working on an SDK (software development kit). This product allows our system to integrate into other third-party applications. nomtek tests all of the platforms.

What is the team composition?

We collaborate with an account manager, two developers, a QA tester, and a project manager.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

At the time, I wasn’t with the company. I believe the company found them through a referral. Following a test phase, we determined that they were a good fit for us.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began the partnership in May 2019, and it’s ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We provide potential customers and investors access to the app because it’s high-quality. Their deliverables meet our expectations. When resources change, they make the transitions smooth. We’re happy with them.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

We talk nearly every day and primarily communicate via Slack. We also have weekly meetings with our project manager and developers to manage tasks. We follow an Agile methodology and release on average a version weekly.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’re happy with our level of communication with nomtek. They understand our limitations and problems as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We consider them a partner, not just a vendor.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It initially took time to figure out how to work together and onboard the developers to meet our needs.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Explain your goals for the partnership. Interview the developers to ensure they possess the skills you need to achieve the best outcome. Ensure that they’ll mesh with your team too.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and managing director of a startup in Berlin called Covert Science GmbH. We make various lighting-related products and there’s always an element of embedded development within those products, but we’ve never made an app before.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

This project was an experimental last-minute project. We wanted to make an app that could work together with a smell testing kit for diagnosing the novel coronavirus, and later, possibly interface with a sensible electronic sensor in the future.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We started the project by discussing the best way to move forward and determined what operating system to use. They helped us how to come up with a proof of concept quickly. We decided to make a very simple web app. It’s a questionnaire that saves information in a database. They used Flutter.

We didn’t provide them with much, but we gave them graphics and logos later on in the project.

What is the team composition?

Peter (COO) was our main point of contact. We also had a database developer, a graphic designer, and data scientist involved.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

My friend at another company works with nomtek on a similar project. They seemed to have a good experience, so it seemed like a good way to go.

How much have you invested with them?

It’s between $10,000–$12,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started in March 2020 and there is still some ongoing work.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They delivered exactly what we wanted. I’ve received quotes from other app development companies, but I like the way nomtek worked because they were very flexible and they didn’t make us put our requirements in a specific format.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

We used a Slack workspace to structure things and put together a team. It was a bit unstructured, but it worked for what we were doing. They just understood we needed to create a proof of concept quickly. They understood that we needed to get the proof of concept out there. There weren’t too many formalities.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I really liked how flexible they were. They weren’t worried about changing plans or ideas. That was a pleasant surprise for me. They structured the project so it was easy to make changes.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not that I can think of off the top of my head.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Generally, you should have a good idea of what you want them to do before you start. Of course, that’s true of any collaboration with an outsource provider.

Leveraging their problem-solving skills, nomtek was able to quickly produce a high-quality app. In addition to receiving incredibly positive feedback from clients, the app’s downloads in the App Store almost quadrupled. The team continues to be a hard-working, communicative partner.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the CEO and co-founder of Lighticians. We develop lighting control technology for LED fixtures in the entertainment industry.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

We wanted to recreate a DMX, protocol-based lighting control app to control light fixtures on productions and sets. We already had an iOS version of this app for iPhone and iPad but we had issues with our previous developer. Their costs were getting too high and they weren’t delivering a product that we were happy with. So, we reached out to nomtek to do some cleanup.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, the team just fixed the bugs and we were happy with their work. We then did another phase where nomtek cleaned up a lot of the code in the architectural backend using C++ and redesigned the UI, implementing new concepts and changing some of the workflows of the DMX lighting control.

With guidance from me and my partner, their UI designer laid out a new framework for both the iPad and iPhone versions. They also filled in any workflow and technique gaps that were missing from our previous version, such as scroll and swipe functions.

What is the team composition?

We’ve mainly worked with Tamara (Head of Marketing, nomtek) who has served as our project manager, Aleksander (iOS App Developer, nomtek) who has worked as the lead programmer, and another teammate who is the UI designer.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

After extensively researching different resources on Google, we ended up on Clutch where nomtek was listed. They were one of about a dozen companies that fit the mold of what we were looking for. We sent all of them the old version of our app as well as a long document detailing what we liked about it and what we wanted to achieve. We then held Skype calls with the developers and decided that nomtek was the right fit.

They stood out because, unlike the other developers who were overly optimistic, they didn’t sugarcoat any of the issues they saw with the old version of the app. They were upfront and they provided good solutions for the problems.

How much have you invested with them?

At this point, we’ve invested between $60,000–$70,000 but once they finish the bug fixes, the amount will be higher than that.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in August 2019 and our relationship is ongoing. Although we launched the update of the app in the iOS App Store in February, we have every intention of keeping them on to continue developing and improving it.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Since we launched the second version of the app, our downloads have increased by 250%, which is pretty good. Our impressions, conversion rates, and app units have also gone up dramatically.

Because we launched at a trade show, we were able to see our customers’ reactions. Whether they had never seen the app before or had used the previous version, everyone was much more enthusiastic about this version. They were incredibly pleased with the changes that were made.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

They work really fast and meet every deadline, doing whatever it takes to get the work done. When we had the trade show deadline, they made multiple builds per day and completed any necessary tweaks. Tamara is resourceful and does a great job of keeping the team on track and moving them along.

The team is also able to balance their can-do attitude with a direct, honest line of communication. They give us criticism when it’s necessary and tell us when not to take certain steps.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have a positive attitude and are very collaborative. I was fortunate to be able to spend time with them in Poland and I had a lot of fun spending the day with them. They also help us stay within the budget and on-schedule while offering creative ideas.

A lot of developers say they’re agile when they’re actually rigid and end up charging more for any changes or additions. But the nomtek team is flexible and is personally invested in the work. They’re problem-solvers and truly love what they do and I appreciate that.

Another thing that impressed me was their ability to grasp the lighting control terminology despite not having a background in it. We’re a very specialized, unique industry that’s difficult for most people to comprehend. There’s a big learning curve especially with controlling and mixing color but the team was able to quickly understand these difficult concepts.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I’m incredibly happy with them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It’s good to feed them information. Although they communicate well in English, there is sometimes a language barrier. Getting on a conference call or meeting them in Poland instead of sending emails back and forth will be more productive. Facetime and phone calls are also incredibly effective.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the chief marketing officer for Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. We are developing a next-generation technology that will allow us to travel at airplane speeds on the ground safely and efficiently.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Nomtek?

We are still pre-product in terms of the full Hyperloop system, but we do have an installation in France and working on our first larger system in Abu Dhabi. We worked with Nomtek to come up with a solution for presenting our technology to potential investors in a much more engaging and interactive way.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The project started with strategy planning in terms of our opportunities in VR and AR and all kinds of other technologies, and from there they created a program that we could use to effectively present our work.

From the beginning, the plan was to use Magic Leap to harness those technologies for our presentation, but there are a limited number of people with the specific knowledge of how to develop within those platforms, and Nomtek was able to provide that service.

Their team also served as support throughout that entire process, working closely with us on different aspects of the final product and even attending an event in Cleveland to make sure it went off without a hitch.

What is the team composition?

We communicate with about 6–7 people from their team. I’m not sure how many people are staffed on the project in total, but our main point of contact is the CEO and then we work directly with the dev team as well.

How did you come to work with Nomtek?

Our team went directly to Magic Leap to ask for recommendations on who to work with, and they pointed us too Nomtek who had an impressive list of accomplishments with the technology. After our first few calls with them, we decided to move forward on the project.

How much have you invested with them?

The contract was for about $75,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our work together lasted from about October–December 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Everyone that has used the platform has left overwhelmingly positive feedback for us. Our internal team feels very strongly about the quality of the work, so we are optimistic about the impact that it is going to have on our operation.

How did Nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

We set a very aggressive deadline of only 10 weeks from concept to execution. Normally, a project with that kind of timeline will experience some delays, but Nomtek was proactive and hard-working enough to finish the project even earlier than the deadline.

I was very surprised by their ability to turn the work around the work so quickly, but I was even more impressed by the quality that they were able to produce in that time. We have weekly calls to keep everyone updated on progress and review the code, and our team members communicate via slack between those.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have a unique combination of a talented team that is able to do extremely high-quality work and dedicated individuals who provide support afterward to make sure the overall project is as successful as possible.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, the project was completely successful so there’s nothing I can think of that they should improve.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don’t hesitate to give them a chance to do great work for you. They’re one of the best developers I’ve ever worked with.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

Music Artist & Creative Director

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire nomtek?

nomtek was hired to create a mixed reality audiovisual experience on magic leap that allowed people to manipulate AI generated audio samples with their hand gestures.

What were your goals for this project?

During this 2-week artist residency, I finished my first AI music album and needed to create a more tangible and immersive way for people to engage with some of the AI audio samples generated from my voice. As I see how current happenings in the space of AI are very intangible, and sound plays a secondary role in how we as humans react to external senses, I had this deep need to bring these strange machine created sounds to visual life.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

Based on their award winning background, expertise, professionalism, and shared excitement about creating something new, it was an easy fit.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

Once learning about the potential of magic leap, I wanted to create an experience that allowed people to manipulate the audiovisual pieces with their hands, creating a new artistic and meaningful way of engaging with all the emerging technology of today. In just 2 weeks they helped execute my simple but technologically complex process of creating 5 audiovisual objects in magic leap.

With this very short deadline, they were quickly able to create a web-based prototype in just 2 days. The journey from prototype to execution happened very quickly and efficiently. nomtek's ability to understand the vision of the project and communicate clearly of what was possible and not possible within our tight timeline was a great experience. They were also able to make great new suggestions when certain technical aspects were not feasible.

What was the team composition?

The team composed of me (Portrait XO) as the creative lead, Kalam Ali (Mentor), Peter Mezyk (COO), Tamara Bolsewicz (Product Consultant, nomtek), Harriet Blend (3D visual artist), and Sebastian Ewak (Software Developer, nomtek),

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The reactions during the nomtek pop-up event during this residency were incredible. The most interesting aspect of observing how people engaged with this mixed reality experience was how much control they felt like they had over the movement and sound of the objects. Although technically, we only created 1 hand gestures, because each object were animated to move differently, people felt like they had super powers in their hands - convinced they were manipulating other aspects of the sounds and visuals. Official testimonial and recap video coming soon.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Project management was very quick and efficient. It was amazing how quickly Tamara and Sebastian worked to help deliver this concept. To do something that hasn't been done before is always a huge risk and it was amazing to collaborate with a company that was so enthusiastic, flexible, and able to execute to such a standard. It's been a dream to work with such a talented team of people at nomtek.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I was most impressed with the level of insights they were able to share during the phase of prototyping. When a hand gesture was not feasible to create for this experience, Sebastian Ewak was able to clearly explain why it was not possible because of the limited timeframe we had, and how much time he would actually need to develop. There was never a problem that couldn't be solved, it was more of a need for more time.

The speed of how quickly changes were implemented and prototyped was really remarkable, and new suggestions that were made when something was just not possible to create at the time. It is rare to find developers and tech leads who are able to effectively communicate and execute ideas. It's clear the team of nomtek are not only very experienced and talented but understand the creative vision of a project. They work within the limitations of tight deadlines, delivering a high standard of technicality, and great communication skills.

More conversions are coming from the mobile app because users prefer the app’s UX over the website. Through many in-person meetings, nomtek maintained strong communication with their partners. Due to the engagement’s success, their team continues to provide support and maintenance for the app.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the IT manager of an architecture and planning company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

We have a home-buying platform where users can download ready-made house plans. According to Google Analytics, most of our traffic stemmed from mobile users, and more specifically, Android users. To meet our client’s needs, we wanted to implement a mobile app version of our platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We wanted to duplicate the UX from our website on the app, so we hosted workshops to discover which functionalities needed to be translated into the new platform. With their development team, we created an Android app and developed the API that we use across the entire platform. We then started working on the UI for each page of the app.

The app helps users select the perfect house to buy. They can use filters and save their favorites on a wish list. The mobile app is used primarily to help users find the house plan they want. Then, it directs them to their desktop to complete the purchase. Since they have a single sign-on credentials, they can then investigate more or buy the house plan from their desktop.

Now nomtek maintains the app and provides management services. If we add any new features to our website, we also ask them to create the same feature for our app.

What is the team composition?

We had about five people working on the project.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

We researched software houses that specializes in Android apps and were impressed by nomtek’s portfolio. They’re local to us, which made collaboration very convenient. Additionally, they’re well-known and trusted the quality of their work.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted from May–October 2017.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

A lot of our users switched from using our website to using our mobile app because it was more user-friendly. We’ve started to see more conversions from the app versus the website, so we encouraged our users to try our mobile app.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

We collaborated very well. We held meetings, workshops, and discussed the UI in-person. Now we communicate via Slack, and they reach out to us when the platform needs to be updated or fixed.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It was really easy to collaborate with them because they’re very flexible. Overall, we’re really happy with our partnership.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, we are really happy with their work.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the product manager for an e-commerce company that focuses on secondhand goods, where both businesses and consumers sell and buy items.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

We decided to rewrite our experience in new technology and needed it to get started quickly. We didn’t want traditional outsourcing help but wanted to expand our in-house team with more engineers and QA testers.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

At the beginning of the project, nomtek provided engineers and QA personnel to join our team for both iOS and Android development work. We went full native for the application, using Kotlin and Swift. Our app allows consumers to sell and buy products in the marketplace.

Our process involves an engineer writing a piece of code before it gets reviewed by another engineer. It is intermixed, meaning they could write code and reviewed by an engineer from our company and vice versa.

What is the team composition?

There are five people on the team.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

nomtek was recommended to me through a connection of mine. We reached out and decided to work with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested €300,000 (approximately $330,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement with nomtek started in February 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our tech leads assessed how well the collaboration was working in terms of quality and development speed. It’s been positive, which is why our engagement has continued.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

nomtek works with our in-house team, joining dailies and weekly planning meetings. The team is responsive, constantly keeping in touch with our lead engineers through Slack.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We were happy to find that their team was quite fast. They were able to start within a few weeks. The team at nomtek is flexible and pragmatic. Their team understands the urgency of delivering high-quality work at a reasonable speed.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, it’s been a positive partnership.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It’s important to establish a great working relationship between team members. We visited them and they visited us, which was extremely helpful.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CTO of a startup company that’s dedicated to helping people interact with technology in more healthy ways.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

We needed a development firm with a diverse skill set to build our platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

nomtek developed our product’s web app using Ruby on Rails and created mobile versions for iOS and Android. They built out a connecting backend to stabilize the platform. We required native applications because of the software’s complex OS interactions. The finished product helps schools limit the distraction of phones in the classroom.

We’d already designed the platform before engaging with nomtek, but they did provide some additional tweaks. Once the project began, we met with their team in Poland to flesh out the platform’s requirements. That process included figuring out the technical architecture and defining the development tickets. The app tracks the amount of phone usage within a specified period. It also limits access to applications once students go over their budgeted time. They utilized a scrum-style approach, performed QA services, and launched the platform after a seven-week development cycle. They also developed an API for the web app that collects data from mobile devices and sends out policies.

We’re currently piloting the platform in several schools as nomtek continues to provide improvements based on market feedback.

What is the team composition?

They allocated four developers and a QA resource. We occasionally work with their CEO and a technical lead as well.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

They were referred to one of our co-founders. We engaged in a rigorous selection process and considered 10 different vendors. After narrowing the field down to three or four options, we asked for estimates and spoke to the corresponding tech leads in more detail. After doing all that, nomtek appeared to be the best candidate.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent roughly $50,000–$200,000 thus far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in April 2018 and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The apps they’ve built meet our original acceptance criteria. All versions were published onto The App Store without any severe issues. Considering the technology we’re using, that’s a significant accomplishment. Their QA efforts are extremely thorough, so we’ve only experienced a few manageable bugs since launch. We didn’t have a single line of code written in April, but now the app is being used by thousands of students across multiple schools. Overall, the platform runs fast and the UI functions as expected.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

They engage a standard scrum methodology, so we track their progress along the estimated story points. We’re a young company trying to learn from the market, but nomtek’s approach balances a structured but flexible workstyle. For example, they rigorously detailed every ticket included in the project’s scope before development started. Considering I’m the product owner and business analyst, a lot of the project managing efforts are collaborative. They organized code reviews and handled their staff, but the stand-up meetings are often a joint effort. That speaks to their ability to integrate themselves with clients.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re genuinely invested in making our product a success. nomtek consistently produces exceptional code and performs comprehensive QA testing. Whenever we experience an issue, I tell them via Slack and they immediately try to resolve it. I didn’t expect that level of dedication when we hired them.

I also appreciate they have a high employee retention rate. They carefully vet candidates, hire good people, and keep them happy. They’re built to accommodate a frequently changing project scope.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’d like to receive more structured communication from the technical lead. However, I recognize that my role in the project suggested that I’d be the one facilitating that relationship. Their CEO helps me address issues as needed.

Their work is extremely valuable, producing an excellent product that meets the company's required need and permits them to serve their customers. The team tested the product effectively and ensured there were few bugs upon delivery, working hard to deliver on time.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO of Collectomate, a startup providing a platform for delivery automation to modern offices. We provide an automated collection point that helps receptions process parcels without manual intervention from the staff. Everything is based on mobile apps and IoT technologies.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

The platform consists of three basic parts: the cloud backend service, the mobile apps for Android and iOS devices, and the IoT hardware part. We’ve involved nomtek in the part related to mobile apps.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

nomtek created our Android and iOS phone applications, as well as one for Android tablets. They wrote an API and some software development kit (SDK) elements, to talk with our hardware.

They prepared everything from scratch. We had a session about the platform and the product requirements; they led the requirements solicitation process, then they started on wireframe designs from scratch.

What is the team composition?

They assigned one designer, one tester, and three software engineers. The product owner on their side served as our main contact. He coordinated with the developers and set prioritizations on the backlog. We had tools for communicating with all members of the execution team, but my main planning activities were done with the product manager.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

We found them through a referral from contacts who strongly recommended nomtek.

How much have you invested with them?

The cost was around $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them around March 2018. We had a major release in August, after about four months of development.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They created a big part of the whole product, which is our only value offering to the market. They were very important for us and the way they worked had a big impact on our business. Had it been unsuccessful, we would’ve had problems releasing it and meeting deadlines with our customers. For that reason, nomtek has had a large and positive impact. We were able to deliver on time and the product is good.

Most of the code was done right the first time. They used unit testing on their side, so nothing was released to me before it was properly tested. I had no major problems with bugs from their side; the QA side was very good.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

The main contact on their side was very communicative. They were able to rapidly adjust to any requirements changes, and properly managed the communication with the team. They did a good job and I never felt I was struggling with anything. The work progressed smoothly and any change requests were taken care of quickly. We had communication team meetings, where we quickly defined the scope.

nomtek is flexible and proficient in working in a lean way. They’re capable of adjusting quickly to changes in the scope, without impacting the product at the end. We used Jira and Slack for communication throughout.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The main thing I loved about nomtek is the quality of their work—their software engineers’ approach to solving problems, the way the code was created, and the quality of the code. They’re capable of doing quite sophisticated things, not just simple apps, but ones that integrate with different things. In our case, we had quite a complex backend to integrate with, and hardware to talk to. The apps needed to be ready for that, and nomtek managed it.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It’s hard for me to say. I didn’t come across any bottlenecks or other things that annoyed me within the communication and collaboration. They quickly understood our goal and scope, and they provided good software. It’s hard for me to say that nomtek should improve in one area or another.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

I strongly recommend them. A general piece of advice is that clients need to work as closely as possible with and be available to the people from nomtek, in order for them to understand the product scope.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a product manager for a provider of online dictionaries, language courses, and other language-related products.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with nomtek?

We wanted to develop a new online dictionary using React Native and React.js. We identified a better opportunity—namely developing new business models—so we invalidated the original idea, gave it to another partner agency, and started working with nomtek on the new initiative.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We conducted user interviews together with nomtek’s UX manager, trying to find out their problems. Simultaneously, we worked with nomtek on validating the business model, which involved setting up a value proposition canvas and a business modeling canvas.

We also worked on prototyping with nomtek, starting by defining what the experiment might look like, what conditions we needed, and who the participants would be. We had teachers and students onboard and we had a marketing effort in place for attracting them. We designed the experiment in terms of UX and design, which involved using a few tools.

What is the team composition?

We started out with a five-person team, but we soon found out that we didn’t need that many people. The initial team consisted of a frontend developer, a project manager, nomtek’s COO, a UX manager, and a QA person. We decided that we didn’t need the developer and the QA tester, so we ended up with the remaining three. I’ve acted as a project manager from time to time, but I only dedicated a few hours to it.

How did you come to work with nomtek?

I was looking for several agencies for help developing a new product, namely an online dictionary app. I searched online and looked at different websites, including Clutch.

I first got in touch with Peter (COO and VP of Board, nomtek) as well as a lot of other agencies at the same time. The difference with nomtek was that they asked me the right questions; he challenged my business model and ideas, and, by the way he talked to me, he gave me the confidence that he was aware of his profession. He was motivated enough to bring his own ideas and tell us when ours weren't ideal.

How much have you invested with them?

The total cost of their work was around €35,000 (approximately $40,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in May 2018. We put the project on hold at the end of July, as our company is restructuring, and we have to prioritize different topics.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

By interviewing users, we’ve gathered a lot of qualitative insights. We’ve been able to learn a lot about user behavior around learning languages and about how teachers earn their money, how much time they need to dedicate to students, and so on. We’ve also gathered some quantitative data by setting up experiments with success criteria, in which we measured whether we would reach those criteria or not.

For the first experiment, we almost managed to hit the success criteria, which meant that we got a certain amount of conversions, and earned a certain amount of money.

How did nomtek perform from a project management standpoint?

We used Jira for setting up tasks and Confluence for documentation. Once there were only three of us on the team, we stopped using Jira and went to an offline Kanban board. We setup tasks for ourselves, simply writing them on post-its. We set up different columns: to-do, progressed, ready-for-review, and done.

They made sure that the COO and the UX designer were always available. They did work on other projects, but they prioritized ours.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive thing about nomtek is that they challenged us. Instead of just sitting there and waiting for us to tell them what to do, they were engaged and involved during meetings. They always asked questions and tried to find out if the answers made sense. They made sure we didn’t waste any time on initiatives that weren’t working, and always took their time to understand things and ask the right questions. They didn't just wait to get tasks done, but focused on whether or not they made sense.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We've done a retrospective during which we discussed what we could improve in each area. So far, we haven’t come up with anything for nomtek.

Everything’s gone smoothly during the three short months of our collaboration with nomtek. I got the results we were looking for and the task was completed.
