Loans and LIOS modules for Aktia bank

Working with Aktia - a Finnish bank owned by Finnish savings bank foundations - we've developed two fully-featured modules for internet banking: Loan and LIOS. The both work by the same key principle: they are integrated web modules for a comprehensive

online banking solution aimed to facilitate its workflow and performance. These modules are user-friendly, intuitive and educational helping to create loan and life insurance apps to automate certain banking operations and save time for bank current and potential clients

EventSpace event management portal and applications

Eventspace is an event management application created for an independent creative cluster uniting tech and professional Belarusian communities, IT companies and specialists  under one roof. Space holds numerous conferences, hackathons and other events and they needed a mobile solutions to support that activity. Nasty Creatures provided that solution quickly using their own customizable event management platform

which already included a mobile app and promo website, as well as admin app for management facilitation. Thus on the basis of a comprehensive platform already including developed UX, rich basic functionality and strong server side part a new app - Eventspace - was built. The app provides a wide range of opportunities for event managers and participants likewise: extended view of events, UX personalization including ranking options; payment support; overall users' engagement and gamification.

Digital Publishing Platform (Inkstand)

Digital Publishing Platform (aka Inkstand) is Nasty Creatures' own product. We wanted to design a software solution which would be a shortcut from a print edition of a newspaper/magazine to its digital version. We came out with Inkstand which we define as Efficient. Profitable. Functional. It's a digital publishing platform that facilitates developing electronic version for any print

media

with no loss in app functionality or design. It all goes to 3 simple steps:

1. Publisher provides content and requirements
2. Developer customizes existing platform template
3. Publisher gets an app supporting all popular platforms featuring rich UI and UX.

And all that with no need for extra development time and effort but only small customization required. As for Inkstand tech characteristics: Single Page Application featuring HTML5/CSS3 and a Java-based server side.

Sales in the fields

Key business objectives of Data Migration MBS Project for T-systems DMC were productivity enhancement via workflow management and automation. Client wanted a tablet app providing their auditors with a mobile office enabling them to work with data (manage orders, time, expenses and material transfers) in off-line mode and sync with SAP. This solution for SAP processing management has to support iOS6+, Android 4+ and WP8

operating systems. We've developed a comprehensive solution including all the management possibilities, as well as Embedded online chat, Offline mode, Automatic data sync and Push notifications, within 4 months fulfilling all the requirements and delivering final product in time and on budget.

Nasty Creatures provides excellent results in the projects they undertake, especially in testing and quality assurance tasks. The team is very proactive and often provides timely solutions that are outside the initial scope of the endeavor.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company.

We are a consumer company, B2B [business to business] and B2C [business-to-consumer]-kind of an operator of digital receipts. Companies provide digital documents to consumers, and we're a platform for consumers to view, store and manage those documents in a centralized way. So, we're a document storage operator for consumers.

What is your position?

I'm the founder.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

Could you describe the business challenge that you were trying to address when you first approached Nasty Creatures?

As a startup company, it was very important for us to be cost-effective when we did development work. We have quite experienced developers of our own, but we still needed individuals that were both cost effective and professional. We needed people with a high competence level who could also work independently. We needed developers who could work in an agile environment. All of this pretty much meant that we needed to work offshore.

SOLUTION

Could you describe the actual scope of work delegated to them?

They are working on mobile technologies on both iOS and Android platforms. They do both the front-end and back-end development for our service. They've done UX [user experience] design work for us, and they've done testing, which is where they've been far superior to other vendors we've used.

Nasty Creatures has been extremely responsive to our needs by offering additional services, most of them being development work. If we have issues with mobile development, they can help with that. If they see we have an issue with testing, they come back and give us a hand. In that sense, they have helped much more than I expected, which is why we continue to use them as much as possible.

How did you come to select Nasty Creatures as your partner?

We did some research on different companies, and they were on the short list. I contacted them, and it turned out that they were a good match for what we needed.

Could you provide a general cost estimate for the amount you've invested in their services?

We've spent around €100,000 [approximately $115,000] working with Nasty Creatures.

What is the status of your engagement?

Our relationship is ongoing, and probably will be for the foreseeable future.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

In terms of results, could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback that would demonstrate the quality of their performance and/or the overall success of the engagement with them?

I measure how well they complete the tasks we give them within a given timeframe. In testing, I measure how well a product is launched against expectations. I think in both areas they've been outstanding.

They're so tied up in our own processes, they're really part of our project team. The results we've gotten have been extremely good throughout our relationship. We get stats every week, and we follow how they perform. We've found they have the same competence as our own developers. It was very important for us that when we needed a change, it can happen right at that moment. With Nasty Creatures, there's no lag, and we can implement changes and revisions rapidly.

When working with Nasty Creatures, is there anything that you would consider unique about their practice that distinguishes them from other vendors?

Every Monday, we have a meeting with them where we review what we need them to do. Nine out of 10 times, they perform very well. The only way I think we could get better results is if they were located in-house. I would say they're almost at that level, even though they're located far away.

In retrospect, are there areas in which you think they could improve as a service provider?

Because they're in a different country and a different time zone, naturally there will be times when their work schedule doesn't match ours, or we have minor communication issues. There's not much you can do about this when you're outsourcing, and I don't think it would be fair to hold that against them.

I have recommended them to several companies...they are so flexible. The three important things when outsourcing development are quality, good price and an agile partnership. They are very good in all of those areas...they can deliver what I want.

Feedback summary:

Nasty Creatures was able to deliver viable code on time and within budget. They displayed flexibility, especially on tight timelines. The team remained an invaluable development resource during periods of excess demand.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company.

We’re a software development company with about 50 people, mainly in the United States and Latin America. We create mobile solutions, mostly for large media companies.

What is your position?

I am the director of product development.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

Could you describe the business challenge that you were trying to address when you first approached Nasty Creatures?

We had more work than we were able to do with our own people, and we couldn’t recruit fast enough to meet business needs. So, we needed to outsource various projects.

SOLUTION

Could you describe the scope of their involvement in detail?

They worked exclusively on development. Most of their work has been for Web-based projects. We’ve had a few native projects for Android, iOS and the Windows phone, but that was a minor part of their work.

How did you come to choose Nasty Creatures as your partner?

I found them through a colleague who knew them. Based on the quality of their work on the first project, we were able to continue our collaboration with them.

Can you provide a ballpark figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

My rough estimate would be that we have spent about €500,000 [approximately $558,000] working with Nasty Creatures.

Is your relationship with Nasty Creatures ongoing?

Currently, it’s case by case. We’re not working with them as heavily as we did in the beginning because we’ve been able to recruit additional in-house resources.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

In terms of results, could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback that would demonstrate the quality of their performance?

We don’t really have any metrics based on their work. They are integrated into our system, so that we’ve been able to see their progress. One of the key points when working with Nasty Creatures is that what they promise, they deliver. They keep to the timelines, and they deliver quality work.

When working with Nasty Creatures, is there anything that you would consider unique about their practice that distinguishes them from others vendors?

Their flexibility is the main thing that stands out. We have tight project timelines, and they’ve worked long hours, including weekends to help ensure that we could meet those tight deadlines for the customer.

In retrospect, are there areas in which you think they could improve as a service provider?

That would be just the common issues involved in outsourcing – essentially the need to define specifically what you are doing. Compared to using our own people, outsourcing requires more communication and documentation.

What advice, if any, would you give a future client of theirs?

I would say that it’s important to have a clear road map of what is going to be developed. It’s much more efficient from a development point of view and in managing costs and timelines.

Nasty Creatures consistently delivers quality work. The agency contributed to a process that is successful and receives positive feedback. The client recognizes Nasty Creatures for their reliability and recommends them to others.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization. What is your role and responsibilities?

I’m the IT [information technology] director of Aktia Bank, a Finnish Savings Bank with about 1,100 employees. We mainly focus on private banking, fund management, asset management, and insurance.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was your goal for working with Nasty Creatures?

We were looking to integrate two fully featured models, Loans and LIOS, into our Internet banking system. We had already laid out the plans for the things we wanted to develop for a new and better quality loan process, but having our internal team develop it wasn’t cost efficient. We partnered with Nasty Creatures to help us code and develop the two modules.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their work.

Nasty Creatures was involved in the coding, development and testing of the two models. We had already set up a plan for them, and two people from Nasty Creatures came onsite for two or three weeks. We spent that time going over the project with the Nasty Creatures team, making sure everything was on point. Thanks to that original planning period, the Nasty Creatures team worked in a very agile manner. They’ve been traveling a lot for us, to make this project successful. We’ve had Nasty Creature team members onsite every other week. They’ve been really accommodating.

Can you give a sense of the size of the initiative in dollar terms or a personnel work-hour figure?

The size of the two projects was slightly less than $100,000.

When was the work completed?

Our partnership with Nasty Creatures is still ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

I couldn’t be happier with the Internet banking loan process that Nasty Creatures have developed for us. The loan process has already gone live, and it has been really successful. It has gotten a very positive response from our users, and we have not had any issues with it on our end. It could not be better.

Are you satisfied with their performance?

I am very happy with our partnership with Nasty Creatures. The Nasty Creatures team has done a terrific job at developing the projects that we wanted, exactly the way that we wanted them to turn out. They were extremely accommodating and were really invested in this projects’ success.

Is there anything unique or special about Nasty Creatures that really makes them stand out compared to other business partners?

The managing director at Nasty Creatures is really good and really reliable. He really takes responsibilities of his projects, and he’s really easy to work with. We really have not had any issues working with Nasty Creatures. It’s a very pleasant partnership. I could not be happier.

What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?

We made some changes from our first project with Nasty Creatures to our second project, mainly around testing the module. We added a person to our project to be in charge of testing, from early on in the project. We started testing out first module a bit later than we should have. The second project went a bit more smoothly because we started testing it early on.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

I can’t really think of anything, other starting testing a little bit earlier on our first project. Their spoken English isn’t perfect, but their written English is great. It didn’t affect the results of the project at all, but communication could have been a bit better. You get used to it, though.
