BACKGROUND

SurveySnap is site-survey software for professional integrators and installers. There are many target segments, but we are initially focusing on physical security integrators.

Very recently, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that mobile operating systems have allowed software developers to distribute and manage software to enterprise customers. This has opened up massive revenue opportunities for SurveySnap. That's why we felt it was the best time to invest in creating a mobile platform to meet those needs.

Currently I am the co-founder and CEO at SurveySnap. I am a lifelong entrepreneur and love building teams of like-minded people who work towards common goals. I have a passion for technology, web and graphic design, innovation and a knack for solving challenges and building businesses.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

The main challenge is the time spend during surveys and the overall turnaround time. The business of site-surveys has been steadily growing and with the infusion of high tech, the efficiency gains have started to demonstrate value. From using SurveySnap, professional integrators and installers are reporting a 50 percent reduction in time spent on site-surveys and as much as an 80 percent reduction in turnaround time. This is leading to lower costs and better job-win ratios.

One of the challenges with this industry was the traditional dependence on paper and pen. We needed to create an iPad app that was simple to understand, easy to use, and highly optimized to the needs of our users. For that, we needed a solid user research and user experience design.

We also wanted to integrate the latest technologies into our toolbox, so we set on creating a Google Glass app that we mainly use to take pictures and use gestures during the surveys.

Finally, we needed the peace of mind that our customers' data was going to be protected, our iPad app and the back-end servers be secure, and that all measures were taken against known cybersecurity threats.

We had hired a firm to implement the solution. What we needed was a solid user experience, great Google Glass app design and data security for the entire platform. Not every company has the expertise of balancing user experience with mobile security. We knew this was one of Movel's strong points, so we approached them for those particular areas.

One of the challenges with this industry was the traditional dependence on paper and pen. We needed to create an iPad app that was simple to understand, easy to use and highly optimized to the needs of our users. For that, we needed a solid user research and user experience (UX) design.

We also wanted to integrate the latest technologies into our toolbox, so we set on creating a Google Glass app that we mainly use to take pictures and use gestures during the surveys.

Finally, we needed the peace of mind that our customers' data was going to be protected, our iPad app and the backend servers be secure and that all measures were taken against known cybersecurity threats.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

The product is a mobile app used on a tablet device to take photos, notes, annotations, and audio notes, then "Smart-Pin" them to specific areas of a floor plan while walking through a building. Automatically, professional looking PDF and web presentations are created and can be shared with anyone.

We first hired Movel to provide assistance in creating a mobile strategy. When you're ready to drop a six-figure budget, you want to ensure that your investment is built on a rock-solid ground. That's why we approached Movel to conduct an early MVP [minimum viable product] feasibility study. Movel uses a five-step MVP design process with the result of the blueprints of a well-designed iPad app.

Through the MVP study, Movel worked to identify key aspects of our solution: market segments and personas, app flow, wireframes, mockups, project plan, and implementation road map.

Once this was ready, Movel created the app wireframes and mockups, and our developers started the work. Movel used Sketch, Omnigraffle, and Framer to deliver the design artifacts.

When the coding got underway, Movel assisted with security testing and assessments of the iPad app and the backend infrastructure. They performed threat vector analysis, penetration testing, and ensured all iPad data was stored in an encrypted local storage.

We've looked for companies specialized in mobile apps. But, not just apps. We wanted someone who understood the importance of the whole platform – front end and back-end.

We came across Movel because they are very active in the Washington, D.C., tech community, and I had attended couple of their Meetup events. From those events, it was apparent that not only did they know the latest in mobile UX [user experience] and security, but they also were willing to share it with the community. This was one of the things that set them apart for us.

Movel's engagement was in three key areas: the design of the user experience, including the app mockups and the user flow diagrams; development of the Google Glass app; and performing security analysis and testing on the overall platform – front end and back-end

Initially, it was three months and was at a five-figure number. Later, we retained Movel on a continual part-time basis. They are still consulting with us.

We first hired Movel in 2014. They have been instrumental in the success of our mobile apps, and we're still engaged on a retainer basis.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

We are a nonprofit education organization. We provide technology that allows students to apply for admission to hundreds of universities around the world.

What is your role at the company?

I am the senior director for technology.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge that you were trying to address when you approached Movel?

We were exploring options for a mobile experience for our one million-plus users and engaged with Movel on a mobile application feasibility study. We have an excellent, although small, technology team, and this is our first mobile app development project.

We were looking for information and validation. We wanted to validate initial decisions we had made about a variety of topics, such as tech stack, timeline, and resources, and we wanted more detailed information and guidance on topics areas that we had not explored in as much depth at this early phase like  managing the App Store, security, monitoring and analytics. The ultimate outcome was recommendations regarding a minimally viable product approach.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

It was a two-week engagement with multiple members of the Movel team with different areas of expertise. Many hours were spent interviewing our team and reviewing the documentation we had already crafted. Movel then performed its own research, crafted an initial presentation, incorporated our feedback, and ultimately delivered an extensive feasibility report.

How did you come to work with Movel?

After connective with the president of Movel [Levent Gurses] via a social introduction, we engaged first with him in a brainstorming conversation. Then, we discussed the specific assistance we were seeking, and ultimately came to an agreement on a two-week study. Their technical expertise, focus on the mobile space, collaborative approach, and no-nonsense delivery – and their ability to deliver in a quick timeframe – were all strengths that we recognized as a good match for our needs.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

For Movel, it was roughly two and a half people for the two weeks. For our staff, it was roughly 10 people for one to two days each spread out during the two weeks.

When was the project completed?

Early July [2015].

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the results of the project, and are there any metrics you can share?

As a feasibility study, the main outcomes were informing future decisions and helping as adjust our development and deployment plans. It has also led to a second engagement with Movel during the implementation phase of our mobile app development project.

How did Movel perform?

Very well. The interaction between our two teams was one of the strongest points, and the report Movel delivered was exactly what we were seeking.

What distinguishes Movel from other providers?

They are small and flexible to the needs of the organization they are working with. As specialists in mobile technologies, they are also extremely conversant in the latest technologies and approaches, and can demonstrate their work "in action."

In hindsight, are there areas in which they could improve, or things you might do differently?

Perform the feasibility study earlier in our planning process. Although it was still in an early phase, it would have been helpful to have done before some of the other efforts on the project started. From a technical standpoint, our team is most familiar with .NET in a Windows environment, and these weren't necessarily Movel's areas of expertise, but that was counterbalanced by their knowledge in other areas.

What advice would you give to a future client of theirs?

Be clear in your needs, make sure you plan enough of your own staff time to inform Movel's work, and be open to suggestions.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

Our company is e-Kare, and we work in mobile health care. Our main product right now is a wound assessment system. We can measure and observe wounds in time, which gives the caregivers a way to objectively measure the wound and monitor its progress.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Movel?

We planned to have about a thousand of these devices ready to sell in the next year. For this reason, we needed a solution for how we can organize, manage, and remotely control those devices.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

I reached out to Movel to see if they had any experience with mobile device management solutions, and they were very helpful. Movel is local, which was another good thing for us. We could meet in person, and that's what we did. After a kickoff meeting, they did the research for us to find out which MDM [mobile device management] solution would fit our needs.

We are a startup, and time is very important to us. We had created a buzz in the marketplace, so we had to come up with the product as well. We had a very specific deadline, which was the first of July [2015], and I contacted Movel only at the start of June. The good thing for us was that we could schedule an appointment during the weekend, and that's when I met with them for the first time. I was impressed, and I saw that they had a lot of experience with mobile software development. Then, we agreed on a schedule and they started doing the research on the MDM solutions.

After two weeks, we met again for three hours where they presented us different versions and different kinds of MDM solutions. That was very helpful for us because at that time we were busy with closing things up, finishing development and testing the device, so we didn't actually have a lot of time. That was very helpful for us. The schedule was still nailed down, and we couldn't deal with any delays. After the presentation, we knew which solution we were going to apply.

How did you come to work with Movel?

I was actually looking for a local software development company with mobile software development experience. I found Movel through the Internet and, by chance, I also spoke to a friend of mine here locally, who also recommended them. It was both finding them on the Internet and a recommendation from a friend.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

Roughly, we've spent between $10,000 and $15,000 working with Movel.

What is the status of this engagement?

The relationship started this year in June, and we are still currently working with them.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics, metrics or other feedback from this engagement?

Right now, we are actually using the solution they found for us, and we are very satisfied.

What distinguishes Movel from other providers?

Movel did their homework very well, studying different solutions. They were able to dedicate all of their time to us so, in two weeks, they had everything ready. They solved the problem very quickly.

Is there anything Movel could have improved or done differently?

I don't think so. On our first project, everything went great. We were very dependent on the MDM solution. Imagine you have a thousand devices out in the marketplace, and you have to be able to manage all of them. We are very thankful for the good solution we have right now.

Movel’s contributions resulted in a successful iOS app that functions well. The agency has an extensive knowledge of the iOS platform and used it effectively. There were no complaints for Movel and the agency is recommended to others.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

We are AXON Ghost Sentinel. We are a startup company that applies swarm intelligence as a form of artificial intelligence to server security problems. We develop products that protect mobile networks on the Internet. We are headquartered in Harrisonburg, Virginia, but our staff is distributed nationwide.

What is your position?

I am the chief scientist.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Movel?

We have developed a first alpha-stage prototype for a server security system that takes data from mobile endpoints and analyzes that data in a cloud-based architecture for abnormal behavior. For the system to be deployed, we needed to install a sensor on the devices that we want to connect to the analytics platform.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

Movel was tasked to develop an iOS app that acts as the sensor and provides some front-end information to the user to give visibility to what this app is doing in the background. This makes sure that we're not hiding anything from the user. That was the task. We needed to find an existing communications protocol that we used for our other endpoints. We've developed an Android app ourselves and used it as an example for how the iOS might look like. Then we asked Movel to figure out the best way to do it on iOS.

How did you come to work with Movel?

A colleague, who is no longer with us, established the relationship, so I don't know the exact details. I believe he used his contacts in the D.C. area, in particular through the Center for Innovative Technology and the MACH37 Cyber Accelerator. They have an extensive network to find companies with those capabilities. He specified the requirements and asked for proposals. Then after interviewing a few candidates, he selected Movel.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

It has been a five-figure number.

What is the status of this engagement?

I believe we started working with them late last year. They have completed the deliverables for the first version of the iOS app. We are currently testing it, and we're planning for the next round of development and the strategy for beta testing the entire system. At the moment, they don't have any tasks, but they are holding the code for us and are ready for the next round of tasks, once we define them.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics, metrics, or other feedback from this engagement?

We provided the specifications for the communications protocol and an example of what the app looks like on Android. Then, we gave them the task to figure out how best to do it on iOS. We are not iOS experts. We managed to do the Android app because it is straightforward, but the iOS environment was too tough a nut for us to crack.

They used their extensive skills and capabilities to propose software architecture for the app that meets our requirements. That was done very professionally. Movel gave us several options, outlined the pros and cons on all of them and helped us decide which one they should pursue. Then, they began implementation, kept us in the loop on their progress and gave us demo versions to try out once it was available. We were part of the testing setup and could use it on selected devices on our end. Everything was done professionally and efficiently.

What distinguishes Movel from other providers?

I was very impressed with Movel's deep knowledge of how the iOS environment operates and the various constraints of that environment. What we asked them to do is find a way for this app to run unobtrusively in the background, continue to maintain a connection to our analysis suite and collect measurements and observations from deep within the operating system. All of these are non-trivial tasks in iOS, and they had just the right skill set to make that happen.

Is there anything Movel could have improved or done differently?

No. I can't really think of anything. It was very well done, in both the planning and the execution of the project. They kept us in the loop and helped us understand the pros and cons of the various decisions. I can't really think of anything that didn't go well.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

We're an Arlington, Virginia-based financial technology company. Essentially, what we do is provide mobile app support to financial advisors, not just here, but across the country.

What is your position?

I'm the president and CEO.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Movel?

Our insight into the technical domain was limited, so we were looking for someone that could not just take an order, but actually give us some critical thinking surrounding what the optimal way to deliver would be.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

We first started out with a feasibility study, which took about a month. We went through that process to determine what the layout was going to be, what the scope of the project was going to be, some of the details, and the feasibility of accomplishing the objectives that we had set out.

The second phase was really looking at building out a prototype, so we constructed that. We did a lot of design work, and did a lot of work in terms of building out mockups. Then, we did some limited coding. The third phase was to take all that work we had done, put that together, and assemble a phase three MVP [minimum viable product] final product.

How did you come to work with Movel?

We actually had interviewed about a dozen different mobile app developers. The one thing that really did stand out with Movel was that they're willing to put in a lot of time on the front end, and just kind of walk us through the process. Our understanding within the technology sphere is very limited, so we really appreciated them taking the time to walk us through what the exact steps were going to be, and some of the rationale behind it.

The second key thing was a lot of the critical thinking surrounding it. Not just saying, "Yes, we can deliver this," but, "Have you guys thought about X, and have you thought about attaching Y to that?" The critical thinking and the feedback was what really helped us to make the decision and move forward.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

In total, it was roughly a low six-figure project.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November of last year [2014], and still currently working with them.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We recently had a call with one of our larger prospective clients, and we wanted to have Movel specifically there to represent sort of a strong front, and give the client the ability to ask some technically specific questions that might be a little bit above our heads, and that was something they were willing to do. They got on the phone with us, and they actually helped us to close the client.

How did Movel perform from a project management standpoint?

As a team, they've been phenomenal. It's not just about the technology, support, and development, but it's also about the relationship.

What distinguishes Movel from other providers?

Strong points would be the relationship aspect. That's always going to be the most critical. The second is going to be the critical thinking, and the third is going to be their UI/UX [user interface/user experience] capabilities, and what they were able to bring to the table there. Specifically, because we knew what we wanted to deliver, but weren't exactly sure how we were going to lay that out in a very user-friendly manner, which is important in a complex industry like finance.

In hindsight, are there areas in which they could improve, or things you might do differently?

No. I think Movel did everything beyond our expectations. I think that, through the process, they learned, just as well as we did. Like with any experience, you hope to grow from it, and I hope that they grew from us just as much as we grew from them.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

We have a video platform that's designed for luxury brands, and we're based out of Laurel, Maryland.

What is your position in your company?

I am the founder and chief executive officer.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Movel?

The idea was to create a beta site of our platform. We actually went to their office, had a session with Movel's team, and went through the process. I actually had met with their founder [Zelius Teixeira] several times prior to that, and we had a lot of discussions about the project. He was very helpful in suggesting what steps to take and what he thought were the best measures in order to reach our goal. We created a plan, and they worked together with us to create our beta site.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

We had a few conversations with them to make sure it was the right fit. They didn't want to accept any project that wasn't right for them or one they didn't have the bandwidth to tackle. We had a few meetings, discussed what I wanted to achieve and what their capabilities were. We went to their office, had a whiteboard session where we wrote from beginning to end what we were trying to achieve, and explored how our two teams would collaborate.

Then, they presented me with a packet of information for the proposal and what the mockup of the site would look like and the details of what was going to go into it. We set a two- or three-month timeline. We met all of those goals by the end of March, early April [2015], and they presented me with a final product.

How did you come to work with Movel?

I was searching for a developer or an IT [information technology] company that could help us build the kind of beta site we were looking for. We had a couple of conversations, both by phone and in person. We had some very strong synergies, and the relationship seemed to be a good fit.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

It was a beta site, so it wasn't a full project. We are actually talking about doing the full project as we speak. The beta site was $30,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We are still working with them, and that's the great thing about them – they never go away. I can always call on them. Right now, we're putting our product in the Apple and Android stores, and they're always there to help. They've helped us through that transition so we can actually control the product off of their initial platform. They're just there – a resource for us to use at any point.

Even if we're having conversations with investors, they're our technical support and can speak to the IT side of things while I'm a marketing and business developer. We can rely on the Movel team to be there, to give us technical support and tell potential investors and clients about the back-end and inner workings of the platform. That's been invaluable, and I can't even put a number on that, as far as how useful they've been in that regard.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

The results are great. Everyone that we show the actual platform to loved it. They loved the look and feel, so the work is great.

How did Movel perform from a project management standpoint?

They're on time. They gave me the timeline of when it was going to be done, and they met their timeline. I don't really have any complaints about that. I don't have anything negative to say about the entire team. They've always been very responsive and very forthright. If there was an issue, or there was something going on that they needed to address, they let me know in advance. If I had an issue with something, or if there's a bug, they always address the issue and make sure that we're happy and satisfied, and I absolutely appreciate that.

What distinguishes Movel from other providers?

I've been working with Movel for almost two years now and have a fantastic relationship with the founder of the company. I consider him a friend. So, really, it's their personal touch. They go the extra mile, the extra step, and I think that's the key. You have a lot of developers here you can get to build things, but to actually have someone that's going to be there for you, go the extra mile and have these extra conversations with vendors, partners, or investors – I think that's very key and critical to Movel. Hands down, they do a really great job of customer service. After the work is done – and the work is superb – they also stay there and make sure that you understand what you have.

In hindsight, are there areas in which they could improve, or things you might do differently?

To be honest with you, I don't think so. They're now in a growth mode, so they need help in growing. The skills that the team has are good, and what they're trying to accomplish is good. Outside of my company and the work that I've done with them, I've had several conversations with them, and I think now is the time for them to grow. That's the key. As far as any negatives or any complaints, I don't have any. I can call them at any point and touch base with them for anything.
