The Story of Coffee
Considering the mega-popularity of coffee these days, we weren’t exactly taking on an obscure subject when we decided to do a short animation on the history of the world’s favourite beverage.
However, what we didn’t know going in was that the story would involve smuggling pilgrims, amped-up monks, and dancing goats! ‘The Story of Coffee’ went on to win Gold and Silver honors at the 2020 Telly Awards, which is either a testament to our inspired work or proof that everyone loves coffee (or both).

We had a heap of fun animating this explainer video for Scooti, a ridesharing app that connects scooter drivers with passengers.

SEPP - Neighbour Consultation
Anyone who doesn’t enjoy the noise, disruption and inconvenience that inevitably accompanies property work is obviously just being contrary, but the NSW Government thinks it’s a good idea to give your neighbours advance notice of your plans in order to minimise the impact and avoid disputes. As big believers in the value of consultation ourselves, we put together this clear and eminently rational primer on the benefits of being a good neighbour.

Australian Hearing
We partnered with the folks at Australia Hearing to let people know about all the great free services they offer, which are available not only to two-dimensional people without faces, but to anyone who needs them.

Right 2 Drive
Getting bananas, velociraptors and zombies into one 45-second spot wasn’t easy, but we managed it in this whimsical and highly informative advert for an accident rental car company. It’s also very reassuring to know that the Pentagon has a plan for surviving a zombie apocalypse.

Kids Helpline
Being a kid isn’t always easy (just ask anyone who’s ever been one). We reached back to our own memories of childhood for inspiration in creating this spot for Kids Helpline, which uses such familiar elements as drawings, puzzles, and cutouts to tell a story of youthful hurts and where to find help.

Georgie
Getting a new car is a great feeling, but shopping for it can be a lot of work. In this spot, we highlight the virtues of a car-buying app that helps relieve the stress.

NSW Rural Fire Services
Told from the point-of-view of a rural firefighter, this public service spot highlights how a well-designed Asset Protection Zone (APZ) can help protect a house from a devastating bush fire. The RFS provided the story and we brought it to life.

Electronic Housing Code
Any system that speeds up a bureaucratic process and spares you from visiting an office is going to pretty much sell itself, so it was a pleasure helping the NSW Government publicise its new online Electronic Housing Code that makes it easier to build and renovate homes.

Nothing says whimsical like hangover relief and in this spot for BioRevive’s popular Hydrodol preventative, we used a little quirky humor to spread the word about how to avoid a condition that’s no laughing matter.

Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m a brand and campaign team leader for a charity organization in Australia that provides services for young people.
What challenge were you trying to address with Motionlab Studio?
We hired Motionlab to create a video animation for our Kids Helpline.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Motionlab animated videos that we could use to highlight and raise awareness around the Kids Helpline, which is a national online and phone counseling service for young people aged 5–25 years old.
We provided the topic we wanted to cover. For instance, we wanted the video to talk about how hard it is to make friends when starting out in high school, so we gave Motionlab a script that was good for a 30-second video along with our brand guidelines. The team came back with storyboards on how they would execute the script in an animated form.
After some minor tweaks or requests to include particular imagery, Motionlab then proceeded to build out the animatic itself, with us overseeing the product as it was being created. After the final version was approved, we then distributed it to various media sources and posted it on our website and on our YouTube channel.
What is the team composition?
We were directly in contact with Luke (Executive Creative Director), though I’m not sure how many people were on his team.
How did you come to work with Motionlab Studio?
Back in 2018, Motionlab had done some animatics for Nickelodeon, who was a partner of ours. We approached them a year later to ask if they could help us animate some videos for the Kids Helpline.

We’ve spent $100,000 AUD (approximately $75,000 USD) for 10 videos.
What is the status of this engagement?
We began working with them in February–March 2019, and the partnership is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Pretty much every video that they've created for us has had a tremendous amount of views. Even the one that had just been released last month now already has 68,000 views. Following that, we've definitely seen an increase in the engagement with the helpline service. It's been a very successful partnership to date.
How did Motionlab Studio perform from a project management standpoint?
Luke has been brilliant. On the rare occasion where he's missed a deadline, he's kept me informed of his progress. Even then, he’d only been delayed by a couple hours, no more than a day. There have also been other times where he’s surpassed the deadline by a considerable amount of time, which has been very, very pleasing.
We communicate via phone and email, and we maintain regular contact whenever we're working on a particular campaign or video.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Overall, the one thing that makes them stand out from other providers is their professionalism. The quality of their work seems to level up at each new brief that we supply. We’re extremely happy with our relationship with them.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No. A lot of people underestimate how long animation takes from start to finish, but Motionlab has always been very clear with their timelines.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Be honest with what your requirements are, what you want Motionlab to produce, and how you want it to be produced. Have clarity in your directions because animation is one of those projects where any changes made can affect the entire flow of the final product. It's best to make sure that you are briefing is as customized as it can be at the outset.

I'm the Marketing Manager of a respiratory health (Pharma) company called ENT Technologies. We take pride in educating our various audiences (consumers, trade and health professionals) on the benefits of using evidence-based preservative-free nasal products such as saline sprays and sinus washes. Our purpose is to make peoples lives easier, by helping them breathe easier.
For what projects/services did your company hire Motionlab Studio?
I engaged Motionlab in a couple of projects prior to my work at ENT Technologies for a previous employer. They were so easy to work with that I knew I'd use them again in my role at ENT.
I wanted to bring our Flo mascot (elephant) to life in digital whilst promoting the benefits of Flo nasal salines in children. The advert even was nominated for an International animation award.
What were your goals for this project?
As above - I wanted to bring our Flo mascot (elephant) to life in digital whilst promoting the benefits of Flo Baby and Kids nasal salines for children.c
How did you select this vendor?
I had already worked with Motionlab before. Prior to that we spoke with the Director, Luke Heise a number of times and also met him in Sydney. There was a good synergy and Luke really listened to what we were aiming for within the digital ad.
Describe the scope of their work in detail.
We had a few discussions by phone, shared marketing collateral and shared ideas with regards to the script. We were quite loose in our creative brief as we did not want to constrain Motionlab in their creativity.
The main constraints were the script, which involved quite a bit of back and forth due to having to stick with rigorous TGA ad guidelines. We had a selection of voice overs to choose from too and this was quite a quick process too from memory.
What was the team composition?
I worked closely with Luke, a copy writer of theirs and that's about it! It was efficient and simple.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
Our You Tube ads get excellent view rates and an extremely high (about 80-90%) of viewers watch the advert all the way through! The advert was also nominated for an international animation award. It is often requested by Pharmacies to include in their stores as the pharmacy staff and customers really relate to the elephant and animation.
As a result of the advert's success, we used Motionlab for another 2 projects, Flo Travel and also Flo Adult Salines.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
Seeing as it was just myself working with Luke, it was very efficient. He always responded quickly and was available to talk about any of the projects when I needed to.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
Ease of working together and also quality of the animation. It was definitely a great value for our money too.
Are there any areas for improvement?
Its been awhile since I worked on these projects but nothing I can recall. Like I said the whole process was very simple and streamlined but I think it helped that we were quite relaxed and flexible with our brief as we wanted to see what Motionlab could come up with. They definitely provided the goods!

What were your goals for this project?
Our goals were to create a visually engaging animation that the public would be able to easily understand.
How did you select this vendor?
I cam across Motionlab via google search. There were enough examples on their work on their website to warrant me to shortlist them and give them a call. After the initial conversation I felt that they would be a top candidate for the job.
We then continued to find another two more vendors. In the end we went with Motionlab because of their past work examples and the initial phone call with them. I felt like they could fulfill our needs best.
Describe the scope of their work in detail.
After we selected the Motionlab we had a meeting just to discuss what would be required from us from a storyboard point of view. This was very helpful as we have never done something like this before. We also outlined that the animation needed to be technically accurate. Because of this we needed sign off from the engineer department in regards to the flow of the animation.
What was the team composition?
Since the animation company working on our job was based overseas we just communicated over email and phone. We didn't have any issues whatsoever. The team were prompt in their responses and were happy to jump on a call for the more detailed parts of the brief.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
We launched the new series of product animations at our largest expo we attend. It had high visibility from everyone including the public, executive team and board members. Their feedback was that it really elevated the brand in their eyes. It's been such a success that we have gone on to do more animations with Motionlab.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
The workflow we had worked very well. We provided them with our brief and Motionlab and interpreted as they saw fit. We then fine-tuned from there over emails and phone calls. They were very accommodating at the finessing stage.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
The quality of work they produce is at a very high level. This is obvious when you look at the animation's look & feel compared to our competitors.
Are there any areas for improvement?
There's nothing I would change about our experience with Motionlab. They were always accommodating even with some of our tight deadlines.

I’m the creative partner of the advertising agency ScienceFiction.
What challenge were you trying to address with Motionlab Studio?
We’ve worked with Motionlab Studio on a few animated video projects for our clients. One involved the launch of a new brand while another was part of a brand’s awareness campaign.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Motionlab Studio helped us with the 2D animation for both videos. In one project, they did a great job adding high-quality 3D animation elements against a challenging budget. In each case, we provided their team with storyboards and scripts. They produced their own storyboards to give our clients a better picture of what they’d receive.
What is the team composition?
We dealt directly with Luke (Executive Creative Director, Motionlab Studio). He led a team of animators behind the scenes.
How did you come to work with Motionlab Studio?
We approached a number of different advertising animation houses, and we felt like Motionlab Studio’s proposal and quality work made them the best fit for us.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent about $15,000–$20,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The projects ran from May until June 2018.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We saw excellent responses from our clients. They were very happy with the production quality and the view rate that each video received—they saw a high number of total views and a large percentage of viewers watching the entire video. I believe that the quality of Motionlab Studio’s animation helped people pay attention for much longer.
Motionlab Studio over-delivered on each brief and against budget constraints. Their team was highly adaptable to any feedback that our agency and clients gave them. They responded well and made any necessary changes based on our comments.
How did Motionlab Studio perform from a project management standpoint?
We communicated either by phone or email. Luke updated us daily, if not twice daily. He had some tight timelines to turn around our projects, and Luke was great in keeping us updated along the process. Because of that open line of communication, we could manage our clients’ expectations and had confidence in the production throughout the project.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The little extras that they added outside the client’s brief stood out to us. Motionlab Studio sometimes added a little reaction or extra character that gave the final video an additional level of quality. Their willingness to go above and beyond in the work was something we appreciated.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, nothing comes to mind. Motionlab Studio was quite upfront in saying that we’d given them a challenging budget, but they worked around it for our sake and the client’s sake.

Describe the scope of their work in detail.
Motionlab provided an excellent service and job with committed services. We had a tel-meeting discussing with our project and goal. Also what was our company background and believes, products details and uniqueness.
After that they following a structure to make the project with professional advice.
- An agreed script would be created based on customers requirement.
- Based on the script, Motionlab developed the storyboard and make changes in accordance with our requirement in details.
- A great quality of this first version animation was greatly developed and they are also responsive to any changes.
What was the team composition?
I work with Motionlab's director to make the project. But I am not sure how many team members from them.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
We successfully demonstrated our animation in CIIE and attracted many audience. As we have not launched this animation in social media, not sure the result. But I believe viewer will like this video.

Their project manager is very friendly and easy to communicate. Also ,their project manager is very responsive and reliable. Although feel flaws during the project in communication, I guess it is because of culture barrier and word translation. Overall, the communication was good.
What did you find most impressive about this company?
We were impressed with their capability of sourcing the dubber for the voiceover and the quality of the artwork.
Are there any areas for improvement?
Only thing is that sometime, they misunderstood and missed our requirement during email communication. But it did not affect our project time schedule.

We were creating a suite of new websites for our SAE campuses and wanted to include some 3D animated videos on the home page as well as key course pages in order to help these websites stand out from competitors.

I submitted a brief and we then met to discuss the brief in more detail. Motionlab then supplied some initial concepts which we were able to provide feedback on. We then met weekly to view the progress of the video designs until they were completed.

I worked with Luke from MotionLab. The feedback process was easy and they really listened to what we were wanting, even accomodating some changes to the brief along the way.

The home page of the new SAE website (sae.edu.au) looks unique and impressive, particularly aimed at a young creative audience.

The project manager was great to work with, kept me informed of the team's progress along the way and contributed with innovative and creative ideas.
