A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the founder and managing director of a marketplace software company. Our solution enables users to launch their professional services on the back of our technology and earn money while selling those services.
What challenge were you trying to address with Moore Kingston Smith LLP?
We hired Moore Kingston Smith LLP to be our company accountants.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Moore Kingston Smith LLP was our company accountant, offering critical support as we went through our fundraising phase.
What is the team composition?
I worked with 5–6 accountants as well as an account manager.
How did you come to work with Moore Kingston Smith LLP?
I searched on Google for accountants for startups, and they came up.
How much have you invested with them?
It was about £4,000 (approximately $5,200 USD).
What is the status of this engagement?
They worked with us between March 2016–October 2019.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Generally speaking, I was happy with the work. The account manager was incredibly helpful at the beginning of the contract, which was when we needed him most for a time-sensitive issue. He was very supportive and useful for entrepreneurs like us who were going through the fundraising process.
If I had to critique them, I’d say that I don’t think we got 100% of the value for our money. They’re a top-tier accounting firm with a great reputation, so they’d be a strong deal for a larger company. But, for a startup that’s trying to keep costs low, we couldn’t afford their rate for long.
How did Moore Kingston Smith LLP perform from a project management standpoint?
They were excellent at meeting deadlines and communicated clearly with us.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They were very good at connecting us to specialists in different areas like taxes, reporting, or whatever else they offered within their firm. It’s useful to have everything under one roof when looking for accounting advice in one field or another.
Are there any areas they could improve?
The team could do with more research in certain areas around funding regulations. I ended up having to do some of that research myself in a particular niche, but that’s a relatively minor point.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Make sure you have a good relationship with your account manager because they’re responsible for pointing you in the right direction with other advisors.
The assigned account manager was great at providing customer support and connecting the startup to relevant specialists. While Moore Kingston Smith LLP lived up to their high-caliber reputation, they might not be the best value for startups with a set budget.
