Digital manufacturing applied to orthotic and prosthetic industry.
About: Refix offers an innovative yet simple way for orthopaedics to design and produce orthoses and cosmeses applying new technologies. 3D scanning, data science and 3D printing are put into service of the technicians, who can now create tailored modern-looking products in less time at a fraction of the cost. Each model of orthosis available for production follows our human-centred design approach, resulting in comfort and style for the final user.
Challenge: To shift the paradigm introducing new technologies in a non-technical niche, and to include human centred design in every new model of orthoses, preserving tailoring and versatility in the manufacturing process.
Impact: Technicians can focus on the truly important: patient attention and product fitting. Orthopaedics can increase their productivity up to 400% with almost zero upfront investment. Patients across the globe can access cheaper and better orthoses with less wait time, avoiding delays and not depending anymore on the proximity to specialised orthosis artisans.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
We’re a rehabilitation clinic that focuses on people recovering from vascular strokes and people in need of mechanical respiration. We’re treating a lot of patients with COVID-19.
What challenge were you trying to address with Lab.a?
We were developing an electronic health record system. We considered existing solutions, but we had specific requirements for connecting patients with orthopedics suppliers.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Lab.a helped us create an electronic health records system, using the fast healthcare interoperability resources (FHIR) standard. This is a common standard when working with external health records. They develop all their solutions in FHIR.
What is the team composition?
We’re working with eight people from their team.
How did you come to work with Lab.a?
They had an existing relationship with the CEO of my company, and they were already here when I came on board.
I realized that they were an excellent and incredible team in a very short time. I’ve been working in healthcare for about 13 years, and I was surprised by their deep knowledge of the medical field, considering they’re a young team.
How much have you invested with them?
The project cost was above $250,000. We’re spending approximately $10,000 per month.
What is the status of this engagement?
This project ran between January 2019–December 2020.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Our previous records system was badly designed, so our personnel was reluctant to use it. Lab.a’s system is built on current healthcare standards, with a very good UX/UI design.
After we released the system, we’re going to develop new features with Lab.a. We’re eager to see how it will perform and the impact it will have on our business. We have a lot of industry partners, and we recommend Lab.a to them. They’re a knowledgeable team.
How did Lab.a perform from a project management standpoint?
Their team gave us access to their uTrack. We’ve used Google Meet and Google Docs. We share Gannt charts and tasks through ClickUp.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’ve given us explanations for all the decisions they made, in terms of both the frontend and backend. Any questions or doubts were answered in substance.
The team always had a good reason for building a function in a certain way.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Before I came on board, there were a few mistakes in scope, but that wasn’t due to Lab.a. It was a small mistake that we resolved.
The team at Lab.a built a well-designed system that met expectations and current healthcare standards. In the future, they'll add more features on the platform. They're skilled, responsive, and efficient.
