BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I am CTO and responsible for IT products at NOVATEK-Chelyabinsk. NOVATEK is the largest independent natural gas producer in Russia.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Gravity Group?

We looked for solutions that will help automate gas maintenance engineers work, inform subscribers about the accruals for consumed gas and make it easy to pay bills.

We understood that future solutions should be mobile because almost all people have mobile devices and most gas engineers work outside the office. We do not have any in-house mobile app developers, so we needed to outsource the entire mobile app development project.

What were your goals for this project?

Goals were to develop entirely new mobile app for gas engineers and redesign another mobile app for gas consumers that was already outdated. Mobile app should increase gas maintenance engineers’ efficiency and allow to increase quality and performance of their work. On the other side app for gas consumers should provide a better collection of revenue.

SOLUTION

How did you select Gravity Group?

We announced two tenders for the development of mobile applications. We received more than 5 offers from potential vendors, and, according to the criteria defined in tenders, we selected the best vendor for both applications.

We also searched online and looked for recommendations when making decision about winner. Before contract was signed we also took a series of interviews and asked them to provide CV of specialists who potentially will work on the projects.

Describe the project in detail.

Once we selected this vendor, we had a series of discovery meetings to discuss our goals and objectives, and give contacts of all stakeholders of the projects. The vendor provided us analyst/project manager who was always in touch.

Their team has developed UX and UI design for Android and iOS apps that we liked. The product was created on iteration basis and regularly we got new versions of mobile apps.

Vendor implemented additional issues/improvements and in a month, we got mobile apps according to the contract requirements. As app was finally tested, they published it at Google Play and App Store.

What was the team composition?

They provided us analyst/project manager, android and iOS development teams, designer. They also as we noticed had a tester in the team.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The vendor provided high-quality apps which were easy for end users to use.

After we launched mobile apps for gas maintenance engineers it became possible automated prompt transmission data from the metering devices of the subscriber to the billing system;

  • informing the subscribers about the accruals for the consumed gas;
  • providing continuous data transfer for further analysis and planning of the engineers' working day;
  • engineers can instantly get complete information about subscriber.

Gas maintenance engineers now work more effectively. With mobile application for gas consumers it became more clear and easily to pay bills for the consumed gas. Mobile app allows working with any number of personal accounts, grouping readings by several metering devices, working with a lot of payments methods.

As far as information appears more quickly via push notifications our company increased payments collection rate. We consider that both projects were successful and made possible further transformations of our company.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We got mobile apps within agreed timeline and budget. Vendor’s team showed good performance and quality. All deliverables they demonstrated and finally released were well designed and clear for understanding.

The vendor also implemented some agreed with us improvements that were not in the contract. The communications were always easy and their project manager/analyst was very attentive.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They made us best proposal between all other vendors and they met their contract conditions. As we noticed they are small company and thus is why they are very flexible and open for any changes for processes and products are being developed. They are great at development speed and quality.

We recommend Gravity Group as top mobile app developer and would be glad to further partnership.

Are there any areas for improvement?

As we noticed they are small company and perhaps they did not have in-house tester or it was already allocated on other projects. We would be glad if their development team and company will be larger and will offer more opportunities for partnership.

The vendor provided very good analytics and we together with end users really got happy when we get final product. This is why we think we attracted new clients, the growth was 40% in 3 months after we launched mobile app. We increased our delivery services time and quality and became much more competitive and looking at new regions for expansion. We got the mobile app and server methods within agreed timeline.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The analyst/project manager that we were assigned was very attentive to the details and easy to communicate. He demonstrated deliverables and always solicited feedback to make sure we get mobile app as we really needed.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They showed very good performance on the project, their analyst was very experienced and it possible would take much more time to done the project if this effort would not be like that. We noticed that they are also great at UX and development. We recommend this vendor and planning to continue our relationship.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We noticed that their analyst was a project manager too, and may be it would be even more efficient that roles are shared between two different people.

Guys built very clear and fair communication between me, personally and our teams. Every 1 or 2 weeks they showed up deliverables and shared their vision how to make the product betters, they were experts in mobile app development. The vendor met budget constraints and delivered mobile app for publishing earlier for 1 month.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They are enthusiasts. They by themselves and on their own initiative developed proto-type of mobile app and demonstrated us all benefits at this area. We didn’t even think about this direction but always looked for some kind of innovations. They worked on this product truly with passion.

Are there any areas for improvement?

They have a little team when the product was created, and I noticed that some of the roles were interconnected, for example their project manager was analyst and sometimes tester, and their designer was under developers’ supervision. I think this is all because their company was little and was growing at the moment.
