Being passionate fans of fishing, a group of investors faced a problem: it is very hard to catch many fish when you go fishing not very often. It requires constant practice or studying special forums and literature to find places with a fine catch of fish. Besides, there were no apps in our market that showed statistics on reservoirs or described the best types of fishing to use there. And Fingers was chosen to improve the situation :)

Being passionate fans of fishing, a group of investors faced a problem: it is very hard to catch many fish when you go fishing not very often. It requires constant practice or studying special forums and literature to find places with a fine catch of fish. Besides, there was no any product in our market that shows statistics on reservoirs or describes the best types of fishing to use there. These data would simplify preparing and give an answer to the question where go fishing and which type to use.

FINGERS created a mobile app with the possibility to add the results of your fishing in a structured way and follow the results of other fishers.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Wargaming is an award-winning online game developer and publisher. One of the leaders in the free-to-play MMO market, the company delivers gaming experiences and services across PC, console and mobile platforms. I'm the deputy head of the events department. We create and hold events for Wargaming players throughout the CIS.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Fingers?

We create free events for thousands of visitors, and we had three problems: we couldn’t predict the number of visitors; we did not know who of our players attended the event; and we needed to check visitors’ tickets.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Fingers designed and developed the website, which allows our players to book tickets to our events. This way, we can track the approximate number of visitors as we prepare the event and adjust our marketing activity accordingly. And now we know who, out of our players, attended the event, which allows us to collect feedback and reward them.

Also, Fingers developed the mobile application for Android and iOS (WG Scanner), which let us check visitors’ tickets in real-time.

How did you come to work with Fingers?

Fingers won a tender three years ago.

How much have you invested with Fingers?

That is confidential.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started our partnership in 2014, but we worked in small iterations. Currently, we’re continuing our mutual work, and we have big plans to upgrade the project this year.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We have hosted more than 10 events with the help of the website that Fingers created. Due to WG Scanner, we control the number of visitors that are able to attend the event. Also, we can see a picture of visitors and conduct surveys with them after events. In future versions, we want to give players the opportunity to create their own events using WG Scanner.

How did Fingers perform from a project management standpoint?

Their performance is great; all processes are always transparent. They plan every iteration themselves and we have daily and weekly meetings where we can check a project’s state.

What did you find most impressive about Fingers?

Their approach to work is very impressive. They have very strong process foundations.

Are there any areas where Fingers could improve?

I can't think of anything.

What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with Fingers?

Trust them and listen to their advice.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

We are a large children's toys wholesaler in Minsk, Belarus. I am the deputy director.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Fingers?

Our company is not engaged in the development of software, but we make people happy. The program that is being developed by Fingers helps people in everyday life.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Fingers is tasked with creating a fully developed mobile application in accordance with our expectations. They proposed a project promotion strategy. At the moment, they are making the integration with our partners.

How did you come to work with Fingers?

We were looking for local Belarusian companies ready to take on the entire project (e.g., design, development, implementation, and maintenance). We evaluated over 20 organizations before deciding on Fingers.

How much have you invested with Fingers?

At this stage, we have spent over $8,000 (we are at the beginning of the project). The total project budget is $200,000; more than half of this sum includes the development and maintenance.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started work in August 2016, and it is ongoing. We plan to add more partners to our system and ramp up the application functions.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Now, the application is in beta-testing and is available on Google Play (as «БИГ-Мастер»). But this is not the final version; we are planning a new release at the end of December.

How did Fingers perform from a project management standpoint?

The management quality is high; our project manager is responsible for all stages.

What did you find most impressive about Fingers?

Fingers is very involved in the whole project. If they see better ways of implementation, they will always offer them.

Are there any areas where Fingers could improve?

Every company has something to improve, but I can’t highlight something specific.

What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with Fingers?

I recommend clients to be open and provide as much information as possible about the project since Fingers can provide valuable advice and ideas on how the project can grow.

In the first month since launch, the app garnered over 1,000 organic downloads and is facilitating an increase in several projects between investors and entrepreneurs. The client praised Fingers for their well-organized project management.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm an individual entrepreneur from Belarus.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Fingers?

I turned to Fingers with an idea to develop a platform where investors and startups can meet and communicate easily. The initial idea was to develop a mobile application. The main idea was to build a chat for investors and startups, but it was just a hypothesis that people would actually like it. Moreover, after application development, I felt a need for a website with the same functionality as well. So, people from Fingers had a high goal to be accomplished from the very beginning of our collaboration.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We started with mobile application design. The Fingers team dived into the project and its analysis. They started from sketches on paper and finished up with mobile app designs, screen flow, and detailed specification document. Fingers tracked all the project process in Trello and presented me the concept two times during the design stage.

When they ended up with design, the development process started. Fingers showed exceptional adherence to deadlines and dedication to the project. There were several small problems, but they always informed me in advance and implemented quick solutions.

After mobile application development, I continued my cooperation with them to develop a website. It was a pleasure to go through all the stages from design to development again.

How did you come to work with Fingers?

They were one of several mobile app development companies that I found. When I first met them, I liked the approach and the passion that their team has towards what they do. So, I chose them.

How much have you invested with Fingers?

Sorry, I can't provide you this information.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started with the design of both the Shance mobile app and website in June 2016, and they were completed and published in September.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that demonstrates the productivity, quality of work, or impact of the engagement?

The app launched about two months ago; during the last month (October), we had more than 1,000 organic downloads. The number of projects created in the app grows as well.

How did Fingers perform from a project management standpoint?

Fingers showed great performance from a project management standpoint. I could track all the work in Trello, a project management system that they used for this engagement. All the process was divided into milestones where they showed the results and progress. Every week, I was getting brief updates of what was done and what was going to be done next week.

What did you find most impressive about Fingers?

The thing that impressed me the most is the real willingness to help find the right solutions. The Fingers team could foresee the problems I could have faced and helped me with risk management for my idea.

Any there any areas Fingers could improve?

There's always a wide area of improvement for everyone, but I can't think of any specific areas where Fingers was weak. I hope in the future that the level of their services will be even higher.

What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with Fingers?

If they are looking for an experienced team of developers, they shouldn't hesitate. Plus, Fingers has nice UX/UI [user experience/user interface] designers and business analytics, so it was worth working with them during the design stage.

This is the client's first app development project, but he is pleased with Fingers' work as well as their detailed suggestions on all aspects of the project. The client appreciated seeing mutual respect between Fingers' management and engineers.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I have come up with the idea of a mobile application that would allow people with low language knowledge to use key phrases to get help from others.

We provide consultation on medical care issues as well as legal issues associated with buying companies and operating within the EU. We support clients outside of the Russian Federation. I am the owner of the business.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Fingers?

I had no knowledge of how to create and implement my business solution. I simply had an idea but never worked within the IT sector. But I have traveled quite extensively, especially in the 90s, and found that not knowing the language of a country of study or residence can lead to problems. The same problem exists for tourists as well, and everyone in this situation will have many day-to-day issues to resolve.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Fingers has developed a prototype of my app. We've had numerous discussions on user-experience elements, such as where key phrases should be placed, how to distinguish between people searching for help and those offering it, and so on. Fingers could provide good suggestions for my solution.

How did you come to work with Fingers?

I started looking online with the aim of finding a small company. As a newcomer in this field, I was concerned about due diligence and legal issues associated with the partnership. I met and sat together with the team, having a general conversation during which I expressed my thoughts without going into specifics. After about 3 trips, I made up my mind to work with Fingers. I liked their general approach and the positive atmosphere in Fingers' office.

How much have you invested with Fingers?

The cost of my project with Fingers has been $1,800 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

I started working with Fingers 3 months ago. It's more difficult to find sponsors for IT projects in Europe than it is in the US. I also can't concentrate on this project full-time, so for the time being, we have only developed a prototype. The next step will be investing in a functional version which we can publish on the app store.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

In order to be objective in this matter, I would have to be an experienced applications developer. This was my first endeavor, and so far, I can say that Fingers has been open to every suggestion I've had. I had a say in everything done so far, and Fingers gave me feedback on every detail, from the logo, color format, and what key-phrases we used. IT was a mutual development collaboration. As an example, the application ties to geographical maps, so we considered what solution should be used for this: either making our own, or tying the app to Google Maps. Fingers has a very creative designer who provided insights for my customer needs.

How did Fingers perform from a project management standpoint?

I'm a demanding person, but I do tend to cut people some slack. I can't therefore say if I've gotten as much as I could for my money. Also, compared to the US, the European development market is less competitive. I went by a price/quality ratio, and in this sense, I was satisfied with Fingers. Their management addressed my questions thoroughly.

What distinguishes Fingers from other providers?

Fingers has a team of key players. Everyone was constantly involved during our presentations, and there is mutual respect between their management and engineers. I didn't find any issues, which was nice to see.

Is there anything Fingers could have improved or done differently?

I can't think of anything.

Do you have any recommendations for others considering working with Fingers?

I have received an outline of the work done so far by Fingers, including plusses and minuses for the collaboration. The negative issues had to do with timing and cultural differences between our groups, which is something other clients should consider.

BACKGROUND

Please give me a brief description of your company.

We are a leading Belarusian digital communication agency. We provide strategic and creative services, full-service implementation, and support of complex digital campaigns for international and top local companies: Heineken, Danone, Pernod Ricard, JTI, Volkswagen, Nestle, and others.

What is your role/position at the company?

I am the Creative Director.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was the general business challenge that you were trying to address when you approached Fingers?

We've worked with Fingers on 2 projects in 2014-2015:

  1. DISCOVERMORE. This is a trendy and engaging mobile platform for photo editing, with the real-time feedback from professional photographers. The challenge was to get a high-quality database of registered users for further direct communication.
  2. moVa. Belarus’ largest national mobile carrier velcom, has an ongoing strategy to support national culture and heritage. The challenge was to drive loyalty by creating a useful service for smartphone users that helps people to send messages in the Belarusian language, since the overwhelming majority of mobile devices didn’t have a Belarusian keyboard layout.

What were your company’s specific goals for the project?

In 2014, we had great in-house expertise for web development, but we had been looking for a partner in mobile app development that would meet the highest requirements of our clients. All the apps were a part of integrated advertising campaigns, and we needed the exceptional quality that could correspond to other instruments in the marketing mix.

SOLUTION

Can you tell me about the scope of the project (e.g., desired tasks to be completed)?

  1. DISCOVERMORE

Fingers put our idea through all the stages of development, design, and analysis, which includes user interface/user experience [UI/UX] design, prototyping, database and system architecture, and different kinds of testing. As a result, Fingers developed the DISCOVERMORE app on iOS and Android platforms with the following features:

  • registration,
  • taking photos,
  • adjusting filters (including dynamic ones),
  • photo sharing (through social networks),
  • notifications,
  • loyalty system (users can take pictures, participate in competitions, get bonus points, and win souvenirs),
  • getting scores from famous Belarusian photographers, etc.
  1. moVa

The scope of the project included prototyping and UI/UX design, development and testing, and analyzing the results with Google Analytics. The application allows users to:

  • write in Belarusian Cyrillic or Latin alphabet,
  • send messages to friends via SMS or social networks: Twitter, Vkontakte, Facebook,
  • copy the text to clipboard,
  • translate from Russian into Belarusian and copy the result to clipboard,
  • sign a petition to include the Belarusian language in the list of languages for iOS and OS X.

What was your process for selecting Fingers to work with?

During the first project, we addressed several potential partners. Fingers showed not only the proven expertise in portfolio, but also the proactivity to upgrade our ideas to improve potential results.

Can you give us a sense of the size of the project in dollar terms or even a price range?

It was in the $10,000-25,000 range.

When was the project started/completed?

The two projects lasted from 2014-2015.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the results of the project, and are there any statistics/metrics you can share?  What have they helped you achieve as a company?

  1. DISCOVERMORE: The project has successfully reached its KPIs, but unfortunately we can't give the exact numbers due to non-disclosure agreement terms.
  2. moVa: Thousands of Belarusians use the app every day; we have 7000+ active users monthly. The average rating in Google Play is 4.7, and it has held this position for 2 years! After the first year, the client decided to make moVa a pre-installed app on the devices it sells.

How did Fingers perform overall?

From the very first minutes of working with them, we felt that Fingers was a reliable partner and a team of professionals. They've met all of our expectations and performed on the top level.

When working with them, was there anything unique or special about them (compared to other companies that you may have worked with)?

We appreciate Fingers' proactive approach on every stage that helps to optimize applications' functionalities and saves budget and development time.

Looking back on the project, is there any area where they could improve or you would do differently?

Fingers’ managers really work on improvement for any detail. If the first project had small issues on project management, then the second one was nearly perfect.

I am the marketing director.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Fingers?

A very big portion of our activity is residential, mainly driven by consumers. Since there are no regulations that force them to use energy-saving technologies, it is always up to them to make their final choice on whether they need energy-saving windows or not. Because general knowledge levels are low, and most people don't even know that energy-efficient windows exist, our main challenge was to equip windows salespersons with a modern tool in the form of an app. We wanted to show the benefits of energy-saving window coatings, overall performance increases of the window, and demonstrate their acoustic performance. The primary advantage of our product is it that it keeps heat outside during the summer period and inside during winter. Demonstrating these features within an app will significantly help salespeople illustrate what the best solution will be for a particular home using the compass and acoustic performance demonstrator tool.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

We first started with just three features for the app: compass, acoustic performance, and project gallery. We then realized that there is a significant demand from window companies to have an automated tool for measuring the actual sizes for the windows on location. Currently, our team is still working on paper and then entering the information into the internal system at our office. We found that there is a great value to be contributed by this feature. It would allow for more flexibility for our team.

How did you come to work with Fingers?

We ran a contest between five or six agencies in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. It turned out that Fingers's proposal was the best one for our company. It had been made using local currency, even though they're located in a different country, which was an important factor. Their price was acceptable, more so given that they met our expectations for this app. Another very important factor was that they made a good preparation for the brief. Fingers made an offer through which we could understand what kind of quality level we could expect when working for them.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

Cost has increased during the run of the project. The initial cost was approximately $28,000. We're currently approaching a total of $42,000, with the extended features. The cost has been much cheaper than what a European or United States company would have charged for a similar type of app. Being located in Belarus brings a great advantage.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project was started in September [2015]. Development is ongoing, although we have presented preliminary versions to our customers and have had internal testing. We're still taking care of some legal issues regarding licensing. Generally, I would say that it's 90 percent done.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We expect the app to be well received by customers. The preliminary demos that we introduced to our customers received positive feedback. Customers are also willing to integrate their own systems to the app, which will constitute the next development step for us. We expect that our work will extend into the next couple of years in order to give as much value as possible to our customers.

How did Fingers perform from a project management standpoint?

What I like about their company is that they are very quick in terms of coming up with results. They always provide written meeting notes, referring to agreements made and ways to proceed. Not a lot of our communication is written and formalized. We speak a lot using Skype and share our vision for the app. Fingers then creates a summary for me to review and comment. It doesn't consume a lot of my time, which is great. I also appreciate that they provide us with a dashboard called Trello on which we can see the current progress of the app and what kinds of designs are used for it. Whenever I need to make a presentation for my team, I can access information from there.

What distinguishes Fingers from other providers?

In certain ways, I've learned from the Fingers team. They employ very nice short-sprint techniques. Development stages and goals are set for two-week periods. This really helps to focus on the most important tasks and not be very broad on overall ones. Another thing is that they run demos in which all the programmers and designers take part. Each one of them gives short presentations on the work that was done, and their management answers all my questions afterward. The overall demo does not take longer than 30 minutes, which is very good. I am sure that Fingers prepares extensively in order to be as succinct as they are. They've helped me be efficient and constructive.

It has helped us on a number of occasions to go back and point out that we'd discussed a certain topic before but forgot to develop it. Fingers accepted this and completed it without any issues. I find this to be very good customer focus.

Is there anything Fingers could have improved or done differently?

They have a good team, but our project manager left the company mid-project. The current one is not bad, but this kind of transaction is never smooth. In general, Fingers is doing a good job. It seems that they really care about their team. Whenever someone leaves the company, it is a challenge for them.

4.5
Overall Score Nine. I've had a positive experience and am very satisfied. I like the fact that Fingers is very reachable, and I can call their management even on weekends and late evenings. They're willing to adjust themselves to our schedule.

Seven. They have missed deadlines on a couple of occasions. They acknowledged it, and there were valid reasons for the occurrences. It is something that they could improve on though.

Nine to ten for their initial offer, which was very good. But, in terms of sticking with original estimates, we need to realize that every additional feature costs money, and overall budget will increase. I've struggled with Fingers constantly about this.
  • 4.5 Quality

Eight to nine. The quality of their work is very good. A ten is never achievable from my point of view.

Ten. I have referred them to a window company. They needed to create an app for online registration to an event that they organized. I believe that companies that work with Fingers will benefit from the relationship.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Their work was valuable to us. Fingers is quite a creative and friendly company. The app provided insight to our staff, making them understand that customer satisfaction is reflected directly in the marks received by our departments.

I make a monthly report using the customer ratings data. It helps us understand what our clients would want changed. For example, we've had some problems with queues in our department. My boss used the information in making change decisions.

How did Fingers perform from a project management standpoint?

Fingers complied with all our agreements in a timely manner.

What distinguishes Fingers from other providers?

This was my first experience working with a developer. I found them to be quite friendly and knowledgeable. Fingers has experts in both design and programming, which helped us take the right direction in our project.

Is there anything Fingers could have improved or done differently?

No, they did everything as expected. Fingers helped us understand where there was inefficiency in our management and how we could improve. There was actually one function that ended up not being used, but it was nice of Fingers to develop it anyway.
